The Power Systems product line offers new I/O enhancements, including several for flash memory technology such as a refreshed high-performance SAS/SSD adapter, new SSDs, no-charge SSDs, and the IBM Flash Adapter 90. In addition, several non-flash enhancements are available.

With flash memory as part of a Power Systems solution, you can recognize the full potential of real-time databases, OTLP, and other applications requiring extremely fast response times. As a result, you can often achieve the following benefits:

The existing PCIe2 1.8 GB Cache RAID SAS Adapter (#5913) technology is refreshed to offer a lower-energy, lower-heat, and lower-cost adapter with generally the same performance parameters. This refreshed adapter (#ESA3) is supported on POWER7+™ 720/740/770/780.

New SFF (2.5-inch) 387 GB and 775 GB SSDs deliver improved price-to-performance ratios and improved spatial density for POWER7® and POWER7+ model 710 through 795. Compared to the already available 387 GB SSD, these SSD can provide up to 2X more IOPS capability and up to 40% improvement to latency. Four 387 GB feature codes (ES10, #ES11, #ES19, and #ES1A) designate SSF-1 or SSF-2 SAS bays and designate if used by AIX/Linux/VIOS or by IBM i. Likewise, four feature codes (#ES0E, #ES0F, #ES0G, and #ES0H) are used for the 775 GB SSD. Additional feature codes are used by PowerLinux™ 7R1/7R2/7R4 for these 387 GB (#EL00, #EL19) and 775 GB (#EL3E, #EL3G) drives.

To help further encourage flash technology adoption, two no-charge 387 GB SSF SSDs are now included with a new POWER7+ model 770 and three are included with a new POWER7+ model 780. These no-charge features are for newly ordered Power 770 (9117-MMD) and 780 (9179-MHD) servers only or for servers making a model upgrade into the model MMD or MHD. For configuration flexibility, both SSF-1 and SSF-2 no-charge features are available (#ES2A, #ES2B, #ES2C, and #ES2D).

IBM Flash Adapter 90 (#ES09) is a single-width, full-high, 0.9 TB PCIe Gen2 adapter. It delivers up to 325,000 read IOPS and less than 100 microsecond latency. It is currently supported with AIX 6.1, or later, on select POWER7+ models. It enables significantly better performance than the existing double-wide PCIe RAID and SSD SAS Adapter (#2055).

Non-flash enhancements include larger capacity 10,000 rpm disk drives, a Power 795 PCIe Gen2 GX++ adapter for InfiniBand connectivity applications and expanded function or easier configuration for previously announced I/O.

The 1.2/1.1 TB 10,000 rpm disk drives deliver 33% more capacity in the same SFF (2.5-inch) SAS bay than the previously largest 10,000 drive, the 900/856 GB drive. This can deliver improved price-to-performance ratio and save physical space, energy, and cooling. 1.2 TB per drive is offered with 512 byte formatting (JBOD), and 1.1 TB per drive is offered with 528 byte formatting for RAID usage. Four feature codes (#ESD0, #ESD1, #ESD2, and #ESD3) designate SFF-1 or SFF-2 bays and operating system usage. Two additional features are used for PowerLinux servers: #ELD1 and #ELD3.

The GX++ 1-port 4X IB QDR Adapter (#EN25) provides a 40Gb 4X InfiniBand PCIe Gen2 technology port for the Power 795. This can enable a high-speed, low-latency connection for specific communication applications.

The PCIe2 2-port 10 GbE SFN6122F Adapter and PCIe2 2-port 10 GbE SFN5162F Adapter from Solarflare, which were previously announced for the PowerLinux servers are now available for use on the POWER7+ models 710 through 780 for Linux™ partitions. Four feature codes indicate which adapter is ordered and whether they are full-high or low-profile adapters (#EC2G, #EC2H, #EC2J, and #EC2K).

The existing PCIe 2-port Async EIA-232 Adapter (#5289 and #5290) function in an IBM i partition is expanded to also support async PPP applications. This enhancement can reduce usage of the more expensive PCIe 2-line WAN Adapter (#2893 and #2894).

Performance is significantly boosted for disk in a #5913 PCIe2 SAS Adapter + VIOS + IBM i environment. Previously such configurations were recommended for use only with very moderate write workloads.

The following I/O enhancements are available for Power Systems :

New energy-efficient, lower-cost PCIe2 SAS adapter

The PCIe2 1.8 GB Cache RAID SAS Adapter Tri-port 6 Gb CR (#ESA3) is a follow-on adapter which reengineers the existing PCIe2 1.8 GB Cache RAID SAS Adapter (#5913) to deliver approximately 20% better energy efficiency and a lower cost with the same performance.

As of October 2013, the #ESA3 adapter is supported in the POWER7+ 720, 740, 770, and 780 (refer to the Statement of general direction ). It can be configured in these models in the same slots and manner that the #5913 adapter is configured, including the system units and the 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5802/5877). It controls HDDs and SSDs located in an EXP24S I/O drawer (#5887) and #5802 I/O drawer. When controlling SAS drives in a #5802 I/O drawer, at least one adapter of the #ESA3 pair must be located in that I/O drawer.

A pair of #ESA3 adapters work together to deliver additional performance, redundancy, and write-cache protection. A single adapter configuration is not supported. A non-paired PCIe SAS RAID indicator (#EJS1) is required by IBM Manufacturing to identify an AIX® high-availability configuration when the #ESA3 pairing is across two servers. A #ESA3 and a #5913 adapter cannot be paired together, though a pair of #5913 and a pair of #ESA3 adapters can be on the same server.

An adapter pair maintains cross-awareness of each other to protect the write-cache contents. One SAS AA cable is used for high-speed connectivity. Four cable lengths are available: 0.6 m (#5918), 1.5 m (#5917), 3 m (#5915), and 6 m (#5916). The top mini-SAS HD connector (labeled T2) on each card is used for this AA cable.

An AA cable is required when one or two of the bottom ports are attached to I/O drawers. An AA cable is not required when all three connectors are needed for controlling I/O drawers. With all connectors attaching I/O drawers, the communication between the adapter pair is performed through the SAS fabric via the I/O drawer and cabling.

Up to three #5887 EXP24S I/O drawers in mode 1 or mode 2 can be controlled by a #ESA3 pair. A maximum of one #5802 I/O drawer in mode 1 or mode 2 can be controlled by a #ESA3 pair. A maximum of one #5802 drawer and up to two EXP24S drawers can be controlled by a #ESA3 pair. A maximum of three #5886 EXP12S drawers can be directly attached to an adapter pair. If a second drawer is cascaded from the adapter-attached EXP12S drawer, the maximum is six EXP12S drawers.

The six ports of an adapter pair are treated as three pairs of ports. The bottom port (labeled T0) of each adapter of an adapter pair is connected to the same I/O drawer or to the same half of an I/O drawer - a specific range of SAS bays. Likewise, the middle port (labeled T1) of each adapter pair is connected to one specific range of SAS bays. The top ports labeled T2 of each adapter are connected to one specific range of SAS bays or attach to each other via an AA cable.

If a #5802 drawer or an EXP24S drawer is in mode 2, then not all the SAS bays on the I/O drawer can be accessed by the adapter pair unless a second set of ports is used to access the other half of the drawer. If a second set of adapter ports is used to do this, then the maximum number of drawers per adapter pair is reduced.

If the I/O drawer is in mode 2, then half of its SAS bays can be controlled by one pair of SAS adapters such as a #ESA3 adapter pair and the other half can be controlled by a different #ESA3 adapter pair or non-#ESA3 SAS adapters.
Note: For simplicity IBM configurator tools assume an I/O drawer only uses one type of SAS adapter, but you can configure different types if needed.

The maximum number of HDDs that can be controlled by one adapter pair depends on the number and type of I/O drawer and the drawer's mode setting. For example:

All the SFF (2.5-inch) SAS HDDs which are supported in the #5802 drawer and in the #5887 EXP24S drawer are supported by the #ESA3 adapter. The #5886 EXP12S drawer and its 3.5-inch HDD are also supported, as they are supported with the #5913.

SSD configuration options and maximums are different from HDD usage. An #ESA3 adapter pair can support a maximum of 24 SSDs. All these SSDs must be attached to the bottom one or two sets of ports (T0 or T1). SSDs and HDDs can be mixed on the same adapter pair; however SSDs and HDDs cannot be attached to the same set of adapter ports. For example, SSDs on the T0 ports and HDDs on the T1 and T2 ports is supported, but having SSDs and HDDs on the same T1 port is not. If SSDs are placed in a #5802 drawer, it must be in mode 2.

SSD maximums per I/O drawer with the support of a pair of #ESA3 adapters are:

#ESA3 pairs support 177 GB, 387 GB, and 775 GB SFF (2.5-inch) SSDs. The older 3.5-inch 69 GB SSDs are supported in the EXP12S drawer.

A single pair of #ESA3 adapters can attach both SSDs and HDDs; however, each connector must have all HDDs or all SSDs. In a mixed HDD/SSD environment, on a three- EXP24S drawer configuration on a pair of #ESA3 adapters, the maximum combined number of drives with 24 SSDs is 72 (48 HDDs). A maximum of two pairs of HD SAS ports of the #EAS3 pair can attach SSDs while the third HD SAS connector is used for an I/O drawer with HDDs or for an AA SAS cable.

A maximum of eight #ESA3 adapters (four pairs or eight halves of pairs or some combination) can be placed in a #5802 or #5877 12X PCIe I/O drawer. A maximum of two #ESA3 adapters can be placed in a Power 720, 740, 770, or 780 system unit or processor enclosure. For example, a Power 740 has a maximum of two #ESA3 adapters and a three-processor enclosure Power 770 has a maximum of six #ESA3 adapters. The presence of other high-bandwidth adapters affects these maximums. For example, all #ESA3 and #5913 SAS adapters should be combined into one total and compared to the enclosure maximum.

  1. The aggregate bandwidth of the #5802/5877 drawer and their PCIe Gen1 slots will not be adequate for maximum #ESA3 PCIe2 bandwidth, especially configurations with many #ESA3 adapters. However, this "overconfiguring" may be desirable for configurations with large amounts of redundancy required.
  2. Typical HDD usage often does not push bandwidth limits.
  3. IOPS measurements are often not reduced by #5802/5877 bandwidth.

Mini-SAS HD cables are required to attach to the #ESA1 adapters mini-SAS HD connectors.

To attach to the SAS drives in a #5802 12X PCIe I/O drawer, 0.6-meter HD SAS AT cables are used (#ECBB or #3589).
Note: If only one of an adapter pair is located in the same #5802 drawer as the SAS bays it is controlling, then the relatively short AT cable length means the other half on an adapter pair has to be located in a nearby #5802/5877 drawer.

To attach to a #5887 EXP24S I/O Drawer, HD SAS YO or X cables are used. Five lengths of YO cables with mini-SAS HD connectors: 1.5-meter (#3450), 3-meter (#3451), 6-meter (#3452), 10-meter (#3453), and 15-meter (#3457). All of these support 6 Gb throughput except the 15-meter cable which supports 3 Gb. There are four lengths of X cables with mini-SAS HD connectors: 3-meter (#3454), 6-meter (#3455), 10-meter (#3456), and 15-meter (#3458). All of these support 6 Gb throughput except the 15-meter cable which supports 3 Gb.

The #ESA3 adapter supports a full set of protection options for its SAS drives. For AIX , Linux , and VIOS, this includes RAID 0, 5, 6, and 10, as well as operating system mirroring. For IBM i, this includes RAID 5 and 6 or operating system mirroring. Hot spare is also supported for AIX , IBM i, Linux , and VIOS. RAID sets with up to a maximum of 32 devices can be configured, depending on the environment.

For additional performance, #ESA3 pairs support Active/Active protocols. This means that as long as there are at least two arrays configured per pair of adapters, additional I/O performance is gained by using the bandwidth of both adapters in the pair.

The #ESA3 adapter is supported by:

Refer to the #ESA3 adapter feature description in the sales manual for additional information such as Technology Level and Service Pack levels.

The SAS drives attached to a pair of #ESA3 adapters must use 528-byte sector formatting. The 512-byte sector (JBOD) formatted drives are not supported except when initially formatting to 528 bytes under AIX or Linux . Thus, any AIX , Linux , and VIOS drives that are not already formatted to 528-byte sectors will need to be reformatted to 528 bytes before being added to a #ESA3 RAID array.

Additional protection capabilities called T10 Data Integrity Function (DIF) are designed into Power System PCIe2 SAS adapters. As a result, the formatting of HDD/SSD arrays on a PCIe2 SAS adapters differ slightly compared to the formatting on the older PCIe Gen1 SAS adapters such as the #5904, #5906, #5908, #5805, or #5903 adapters.

Like the PCIe2 SAS adapter (#5913) and unlike PCIe1 SAS adapters with write caches, batteries are not used in the PCIe2 SAS adapters to protect cache contents in case of a power failure. Built-in flash memory protection with capacitors is used instead. This avoids the need to change batteries as they age as used in earlier PCIe1 adapters and in much earlier SCSI adapters with cache.

The 528-byte formatted SAS drives or arrays can usually be easily moved off older PCIe1 SAS adapters to the PCIe2 SAS adapter and will automatically be converted by the PCIe2 SAS adapter. The word "usually" is used because AIX , Linux , and VIOS drives that were placed in an array that did not use the default 256,000 stripe size or that were individually included into an existing array will require reformatting before being moved to the PCIe2 adapter.
Note: Moving drives off the PCIe2 adapter and onto older PCIe1 or PCI-X SAS adapters requires the HDD/SSD drives to be reformatted before being placed on the older adapters.

One no-charge specify code is used with each EXP24S (#5887) to communicate to the IBM configurator tools and to IBM Manufacturing which mode setting, adapter, and SAS cable are needed. With this specify code no hardware is shipped. The physical adapters, controllers, and cables must be ordered with their own chargeable feature numbers. There are more technically supported configurations than represented by these specify codes. IBM Manufacturing and IBM configurator tools such as eConfig only understand and support EXP24S configurations represented by these specify codes.

There are also two specify features to assist IBM Manufacturing in determining how to cable a #5803 drawer in mode 2 without customer-specified placement information. Specify #EJS5 indicates an #ESA3 adapter pair connection to the left side of the 12X PCIe drawer. Specify #EJS6 indicates the right half.

Third-generation 387 GB and 775 GB SFF SSDs

A new generation of SFF (2.5-inch) SSDs is introduced. The new, higher-performance 387 GB SSD (#ES10, #ES11, #ES19, #ES1A) should replace the existing 387 GB (#ES0A, #ES0B, #ES0C, #ES0D) in most proposals. The 2x larger capacity 775 GB SSD (#ES0E, #ES0F, #ES0G, #ES0H) has the same higher performance characteristics of the new 387 GB SSD, but also can potentially reduce the number of SAS controllers and SAS bays for the same capacity and lower energy usage.

The new 387 GB and 775 GB SFF SSDs are the third generation of eMLC technology offering significant performance, capacity, and price-to-performance advantages. Using faster and more powerful technology, they offer up to 2X more IOPS capacity than the existing second-generation eMLC SSD technology. The new third-generation SSD also deliver up to 40% better latency.

Enterprise Multi-Level Cell (eMLC) flash memory blends enterprise-class performance and reliability characteristics with the more cost-effective characteristics of MLC flash storage. The new third-generation SSD builds upon this base and, using advances in both the SSD device controller flash memory management plus advances in MLC technology itself, offer an even better value proposition. Like IBM's earlier eMLC SSDs, the drives are designed to deliver great sustained performance levels and extended endurance and reliability. For example, the new eMLC SSD modules were designed to provide 24x7x365 usage even running write-intensive levels for about five years. Typical client usage is expected to be much lower, especially regarding the average percentage of writes, and thus drive life span can be much longer.

Four feature codes are used for the 387 GB drive to identify the type of SFF (2.5-inch) SAS bay and the operating system that will use the drive. If used in a POWER7 or POWER7+ system unit or a 12X-attached #5802/5803 I/O drawer, then features #ES10/ES11 are used and named SFF-1. If used in a #5887 EXP24S storage drawer, then #ES19/ES1A are used and named SFF-2. Because the SAS bays differ physically, SFF-1 and SFF-2 drives are not interchangeable. Features #ES10 and #ES19 are used to order SSDs for AIX , Linux , or VIOS. Features #ES11 and #ES1A are used to order SSDs for IBM i. Features #ES10 and ES11 are identical and physically interchangeable, but two features are used to help IBM configuration tools understand the usage and slightly different configuration rules under the different operating system environments. Likewise, features #ES19 and #ES1A are identical and physically interchangeable.

Similarly, four feature codes are used for the 775 GB SSD. #ES0E/ES0F are the SFF-1 features. #ES0G/ES0H are the SFF-2 features. #ES0E and #ES0G are the AIX , Linux , or VIOS features. #ES0F and #ES0H are the IBM i features.

The new third-generation SFF SSDs (387 GB and 775 GB) are supported on POWER7 and POWER7+ models 710, 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, 770, 780, and 795 (B, C, and D models). They are also supported on PowerLinux 7R1/7R2/7R4 servers, but have different feature codes (#EL00, EL19, #EL3E, #EL3G) for configuration/proposal reasons.

The new third-generation SSF SSDs are supported by the SAS controllers integrated in the system units of the Power 710 through 780. These SSDs are also supported by the following IBM PCI SAS adapters:


Note: The increased performance levels of the third-generation SSDs may have SAS adapter configuration considerations unless the SSDs are not very busy. Older SAS controllers or adapters can support fewer busy third-generation 387 GB or 775 GB SFF SSDs than compared to the maximum quantity of busy first- or second-generation (69 GB or 177 GB) SSDs from a full performance perspective. Of course, the PCIe Gen2 SAS adapters can run a higher quantity of SSDs than the older comparable PCIe Gen1 SAS adapters.

The CCIN numbers assigned to the third-generation SFF 387 GB SSD are identical to the second-generation. SFF-1 #ES0E/ES0F and #ES0A/ES0B use CCIN 58B8 and SFF-2 #ES0G/ES0H and #ES0C/ES0D use 58B9. Performance analysts who tune configurations where two generations of these SSD are installed may want to check AAS/WTAAS records in addition to looking at reports based on just CCIN information.

The 387 and 775 GB SFF SSDs can be located on the same SAS controller as other capacity SSDs assuming there are available SAS bays. SSDs and HDDs cannot be mixed in the same array. Different capacity SSDs cannot be mixed in the same array. Generation 2 and generation 3 387 GB SSD can be intermixed in the same RAID array.

The new 387 GB and 775 GB SSDs are shipped from IBM formatted to 528 byte sectors. Reformatting to 512-byte sectors (JBOD) is not supported.

387 GB #ES10/ES19C and #ES11/ES1A and 775 GB #ES0E/ES0G and #ES0F/ES0H are supported by:

In addition to the primary 387 GB SSD feature codes of #ES10, #ES11, #ES19 and #ES1A, there are other 387 GB related feature codes. Of high interest to those buying a new Power System are the 387 GB 4-pack features that offer ordering convenience and price savings. 4-pack feature codes for the new 387 GB third-generation SFF SSD are #ESRE, #ESRF, #ESRG, and #ESRH.

You can order a single 4-pack feature per system only with a new server order. MES orders are not offered. One #ESRE/ESRF feature code orders the equivalent of four #ES10/ES11 features and can be placed in an SFF-1 bay of a system unit or #5802/5803 I/O Drawer. One #ESRG/ESRH feature code orders the equivalent of four #ES19C/ES1A features and can be placed in an SFF-2 bay of a #5887 EXP24S Drawer. Feature #ESRE (AIX/Linux/VIOS) and #ESRF ( IBM i) ship identical hardware, but the different features help the IBM configurator tools understand how the drives will be used. Likewise, #ESRG (AIX/Linux/VIOS) and #ESRH ( IBM i) ship identical hardware.

Other SSD features can be on the same server as a 4-pack SSD feature; however, there can only be one 4-pack SSD feature on the server whether the 4-pack is second or third generation. The maximum total of #EDRE + #EDRF + #EDRG + #EDRH + #EDRA + #EDRB + #EDRC + #EDRD feature codes is one. The 4-pack must be ordered with a new server. 775 GB 4-pack features are not available.

In addition, quantity 150 features to allow IBM AAS/WTAAS systems to order large quantities of 387 GB SSD (#EQ10, #EQ11, #EQ19, #EQ1A, and #ELQ9). The quantity 150 features for the 775 GB SSD are #EQ0E, #EQ0F, #EQ0G, #EQ0H, and #ELQG. Load source specify feature for 387 GB SSD are #ELS1 and #ELS9. #ELSF and #ELSH are 775 GB load source features.

No-charge SSD included with the new POWER7+ 770 and 780

Special no-charge 387 GB SSD features are introduced for new POWER7+ 770 and 780 servers. To enable higher levels of performance and to help further encourage flash technology adoption, two no-charge 387 GB SSF SSDs are now included with a new POWER7+ 770 (9117-MMD) and three are offered with a new POWER7+ 780 (9179-MHD).

Four feature codes are announced to better match specific client configuration needs:

Features #ES2A and #ES2B are physically the same SSD, but have different feature codes to help IBM configurator tools understand their usage. Likewise, features #ES2C and #ES2D are physically the same SSD. SFF-1 CCIN is 58B8 and SFF-2 CCIN is 58B9.

When a new POWER7+ 770 or 780 is ordered or when an earlier generation Power System is upgraded to a POWER7+ 770 or 780 keeping the same serial number, then IBM configurator tools will add either two or three of these no-charge features to the server order. On an individual order, all the no-charge features must be the same.

You can choose to add other chargeable SSD features including a 4-pack feature to the order to further expand potential performance gains or to implement specific SSD protection schemes. Three SSD are required at a minimum for RAID 5. An even number of SSD is required for RAID 10 or system mirroring.


Note: The "no-charge" refers to the purchase price of the SSD. After the one-year warranty period has expired, maintenance charges for the SSD will apply.

IBM Flash Adapter 90

The IBM Flash Adapter 90 (PCIe2 0.9 TB) feature #ES09 is a single-wide PCIe adapter with 0.9 TB of eMLC flash memory. It offers over 500% more IOPS and higher throughput than the existing double-wide PCIe Gen1 PCIe RAID & SSD SAS Adapter (#2053/2054/2055). The IBM Flash Adapter's 0.9 TB offers 27% more capacity per adapter and 154% more capacity per PCIe slot than the #2053/2054/2055. The Flash Adapter features up to 325,000 read IOPS and less than 100 microsecond latency.

The adapter is a full-high, half-length PCIe 2.0 x8 adapter. It has strong internal reliability and availability characteristics including capacitive emergency power loss protection, four independent flash controllers and other patented reliability features. Because Flash Adapter content on a single adapter is not redundant, it is generally recommended that pairs of adapters be used unless data recovery is not a concern for the application. Pairs of adapters offer redundancy and when placed in hot-plug PCIe slots allow concurrent maintenance.

The IBM Flash Adapter 90 is supported in the POWER7+ 720, 730, and 740. (refer to the Statement of general direction ) and can be placed in either the system unit or in a 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5802 or #5877). In the Power 730 (8231-E2D), the IBM Flash Adapter 90 can be placed in the #5802/5877 I/O drawer, but cannot be placed in the low profile PCIe slots of the system unit. There is a maximum of four Flash Adapters per 720/740 system unit. There is a maximum of four Flash Adapters per #5802/5877 I/O drawer. Placement in a system unit's PCIe Gen2 slots delivers higher bandwidth/throughput, but depending on the workload placement in the Gen1 slots of a #5802/5877, may not significantly impact their IOPS. There is a maximum of four Flash Adapters per partition.

1.2 TB/1.1 TB 10k RPM SAS HDD (#ESD0, #ESD1, #ESD2, #ESD3)

1.2/1.1 TB drives deliver 33% more capacity than the currently available 10,000 RPM 900/856 GB drives. Higher-density HDDs lower the cost per gigabyte and can improve floor space density compared to smaller HDDs. They may be also be able to reduce the number of SAS adapters required in the configuration.

Four feature numbers are used to identify if the drive is in a Gen1 or Gen2 SFF carrier and if the drive is for AIX/Linux/VIOS or IBM i.

SAS SFF drives can be reformatted from 528-byte to 512-byte sectors or vice versa at the client location. To support detailed eConfig ordering logic and IBM Manufacturing testing, AIX/Linux/VIOS partitions are always shipped with JBOD formatted HDDs. IBM i only supports RAID formatted HDDs. A conversion from SFF-1 to SFF-2 or vice versa is not offered.

These 1.2/1.1 TB drives are supported on the Power 710 through Power 795 servers and their I/O drawers including POWER7 B and C models and POWER7+ D models.

They are supported by 6.1, or later, and IBM i 7.1, or later, and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 10, or later, or Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.8, or later. Refer to the sales manual for more details.

There are also quantity 150 features for each of the four features (#EQD0, #EQD1, #EQD2, and #EQD3). Plus there are PowerLinux specific features (#ELD1 and #ELD3).

Expanded QDR IB support for 795 and 770/780

A new specialized GX++ Adapter offers 40 Gb IB connectivity for the Power 795. It joins the previously announced GX++ 16 Gb Fibre Channel and GX++ 10 Gb Ethernet (CNA) adapters, to deliver PCIe Gen2 capability for the Power 795. These GX++ adapters offer both high performance and additional capability in an extremely small physical footprint for the Power 795.

Like the 795 GX adapter for 12X loops (#1816), these GX++ PCIe Gen2 adapters plug directly into the Power 795 processor book instead of plugging into a 12X I/O drawer (#5803/5873). The adapter can use the full 20 Gbps bandwidth of the GX++ slot. Also, because GX++ adapters are attached directly to the GX++ slot/bus, they have slightly lower latency than a PCI adapter located in an I/O drawer.

Each 795 processor book has two GX++ IB slots. A maximum of three GX++ PCIe Adapters can be plugged into one 795 processor book. Thus, a maximum of 16 GX++ PCIe IB Adapters can be plugged into an eight-processor book 795. Any of an individual processor book's four GX++ IB slots can be used for GX++ PCIe IB Adapters. Use of a GX++ PCIe IB Adapter does not impact the ability to use a 12X GX++ Adapter (#1816) in other GX++ slots. When combined with the GX++ Fibre Channel or GX++ CNA adapters, the total maximum of GX++ adapters is three per 795 processor book and a max of 24 GX++ per server.

A key advantage of the GX++ PCIe Adapters is their small footprint and cost effectiveness compared to using a 12X GX adapter plus GX cables plus a 12X I/O drawer plus a PCIe adapter. It may even avoid the need for an expansion rack if there is no more room in the existing rack for an additional 12X PCIe I/O Drawer (#5803/5873). This can be significant because it can offer savings in price, floor space, 3-phase wiring, maintenance, and cooling. However, a PCIe I/O Drawer (#5803/#5873) includes 20 PCIe Gen1 slots, which can support a number of Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and FCoE ports.

The new adapter is the GX++ 1-port 4X IB QDR Adapter 40Gb (#EN25). It includes one QDR InfiniBand port with up to 40 Gb capacity. The adapter is cabled to a QDR IB switch, not directly to another server. The Intel/QLogic switch is recommended as IBM does not offer a supported switch for QDR IB adapters at this time.

The adapter is supported by:

QDR IB for Power 770/780

Power 770/780 QDR IB configuration expandability is available for the Power 770 and Power 780. Up to four of the existing PCIe2 2-Port 4X IB QDR 40 Gb Adapters (#5285) can be configured. Previously the maximum was two.

This enhancement is for the C and D models of the Power 770/780 with firmware level 7.6, or higher. These models are the 9117-MMC/MMD and 9179-MHC/MHD. All four adapters must be located in the first processor enclosure and be placed in the huge DMA PCIe slots, C2, C4, C5, and C6.

Expanded support for Solarflare adapters

Solarflare's SFN6122F and SFN5162F 10 Gb Ethernet server adapters previously announced only on the PowerLinux servers are now supported on the Power 710/795 in Linux partitions. Two new feature codes are introduced for each adapter representing full-high or with low-profile (LP) adapters:

These Ethernet adapters can enable high throughput, low latency, and high CPU efficiency, improving the performance and efficiency of network communications, network-attached storage, and remote file system access. Solarflare's unique hardware-accelerated virtualized NIC (vNIC) architecture can deliver high scalability, high throughput, and low latency benefits to a wide range of network-intensive applications. Each vNIC includes a dedicated channel between the network adapter and host software, enabling network I/O processing to be distributed efficiently over multiple CPU cores. This can reduce or eliminate processing bottlenecks and can dramatically improve I/O performance on busy networks.

Solarflare SFN6122F 10 Gb Ethernet adapters support the OpenOnload application acceleration middleware, which can provide ultra-low latency, very high throughput, and reduced latency jitter even as message loads increase. SFN6122F with OpenOnload bypasses the network stack in the operating system kernel by dedicating a vNIC to each accelerated application, reducing the processing associated with networking and improving core scaling. SFN6122F application acceleration is based on industry-standard APIs and protocols; for applications written to standard POSIX socket APIs, 10 Gb Ethernet accelerated performance can be achieved without modifications to applications, proprietary protocols, or specialized networks.

These adapters are supported in PCIe Gen2 slots of the system units under Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4. The adapter has two 10 Gb SFP+ ports supporting active copper twinax cables up to 5 meters long. Performance optimized drivers and OpenOnload are available for download directly from Solarflare at

Async adapter expanded IBM i support

IBM i 7.1 TR7 delivers PPP support to the existing 2-port asynchronous communications adapter, the PCIe 2-Port Async EIA-323 Adapter (#5289 and #5290). Previously, IBM i 7.1 TR5 had provided non-PPP support for POWER7/POWER7+ servers. Non-PPP enables connecting with async terminals, workstations, printers, manufacturing devices, time clocks, handling faxes and pagers. PPP enables applications such as IBM Electronic Customer Support (ECS), IBM Electronic Service Agent™ (ESA), and IBM iGSC Remote support tool.

The more costly IBM i 2-port communications adapter (#2893/#2894 with CCIN 576C) remains available to enable Bisync support for those clients who still use this older protocol and to support MES orders for POWER5/POWER6 servers.

Communication ports are not virtualized by IBM i. IBM i 7.1 does not virtualize the adapter for other IBM i partitions, nor does VIOS virtualize async ports for other partitions.

#5913 SAS Adapter Performance Boost with VIOS + IBM i

An architectural enhancement significantly increases the performance of VIOS virtualized disk in a PCIe2 1.8 GB Cache RAID SAS adapter (#5913) + VIOS + IBM i environment. This architectural enhancement is implemented in the PCIe2 SAS adapter, VIOS 2.2.3.0, and IBM i TR7. Performance of VIOS virtualized SSD in this #5913 + VIOS + IBM i is modestly improved. Previously such configurations were recommended only with very moderate write workloads.

The architectural enhancement also applies to the PCIe2 SAS controllers without write cache (#ESA1/ESA2) also get a modest performance boost using the architectural enhancement.

To use this SAS adapter + VIOS + IBM i architectural enhancement, the HDD/SSD SAS drives owned by VIOS and PCIe2 SAS controllers need to be reformatted. After reformatting, the drives will still be using 528-byte sectors, but the information then on those 528 byte sectors will enable a much more efficient 520-byte interface between adapter/VIOS/IBM i for the IBM i applications. A VIOS command initiates the drive formatting.

Not only can reformatting result in better performance for the SAS adapter + VIOS + IBM i configuration, it can also result in more usable capacity for the IBM i partition. Without reformatting there is a certain amount of capacity used in mapping from VIOS to IBM i. Reformatting should expand IBM i usable capacity about 10%.

IBM recommends all clients using PCIe2 SAS adapter + VIOS + IBM i configurations format their HDD and SSD drives in this manner as soon as the prerequisite software levels are in place. Note that existing configurations that are already using this #5913 + VIOS + IBM i combination should save their data before reformatting.

IBM intends to support the PCIe2 1.8 GB Cache RAID SAS Tri port 6 Gb Adapter (#ESA3) in the POWER7 720 through POWER7 780. IBM also plans to support this I/O via AIX 7.1 Technology Level 1; 7.1 Technology Level 2; 6.1 Technology Level 7; and Technology Level 8; AIX 5.3 Technology Level 12 (and the associated service extension offering); VIOS 2.2.2; and VIOS 2.2.1.

IBM intends to support the IBM Flash Adapter 90 (#ES09) in select additional POWER7+ servers. IBM also plans to support this I/O via AIX 7.1 Technology Level 1, 7.1 Technology Level 2, 6.1 Technology Level 7, and Technology Level 8.

Electronic Service Agent and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to IBM Systems customers. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support all at no additional cost to you.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX 5.3, AIX 6.1, and AIX 7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM , which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type "smitty esa_main", and select "Configure Electronic Service Agent ." In addition, ESA now includes a powerful Web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the "symptoms,"diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24 x 7 monitoring and reporting mean no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM . The Electronic Service Agent tool securely transmits either via the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem, and can be configured to communicate securely through gateways to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system. System inventory information is stored in a secure database, which is protected behind IBM firewalls. It is viewable only by the customer and IBM . The customer's business applications or business data is never transmitted to IBM .

More accurate reporting: Since system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the service request, customers are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM , problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, customers can view system and support information in the "My Systems" and "Premium Search" sections of the Electronic Support Web site at

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent . Reports are available for any system associated with the customer's IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, customers are able to see search results that apply specifically to their systems.

These features assume the same warranty or maintenance terms as the machine in which they are installed for the full warranty or maintenance period announced for such machine.

Flash memory cells have a maximum number of program/erase cycles. IBM Flash Adapter 90 failures will be replaced during the standard warranty period for the attached server at IBM's expense regardless of usage levels. IBM Maintenance Agreements after the warranty period are limited to adapters that have not reached the maximum number of program/erase cycles. Adapters that reach this limit may fail to operate according to specifications and must be replaced at customers expense.

IBM Flash Adapter 90: Typical service life is expected to exceed five years. Individual service life may vary and can be monitored using an OS command.
