IBM System Networking SAN96B-5 is a 96-port auto-sensing 2, 4, 8, or 16 Gbps Gen 5 Fibre Channel switch delivering the next generation of single-chip architecture for SANs. The SAN96B-5 is a high-density, purpose-built, foundational building block for large and growing storage area networks, and is an ideal switch for bandwidth-intensive workloads, evolving virtualized data centers, and private cloud architectures. With flexible PoD capability, dual-direction airflow option, and 16 Gbps FC speed, the SAN96B-5 is designed to provide industry-leading scalability, reliability, and performance in a flexible, easy-to-deploy enterprise-class switch, enabling greater data center consolidation, operational efficiency, and business continuity.
SAN96B-5 is offered with two different airflow options to meet cold aisle and hot aisle data center designs, and can be deployed either as a 2498-F96 model with non-port to port-side airflow, or the 2498-N96 model with airflow from port-side to non-port side exhaust.
The SAN96B-5 is designed to leverage proven enterprise-class technology to support nonstop operations for mission-critical workloads to maximize availability, optimize performance, and simplify administration. These enterprise-class features include:
Based on seventh-generation ASIC technology, IBM System Networking SAN96B-5 is designed with the following attributes:
The SAN96B-5 (2498-F96 and 2498-N96) base system requires Fabric OS v7.1.0, and later. It is always enabled with the following features:
The SAN96B-5 switches are designed to be easily upgradable with a low incremental cost by using its PoD capability of 48 to 72 to 96 ports and selected optional features. Advanced capabilities can be enabled with the following optional license activation features:
Fabric Watch (#7802): The fabric watch monitors mission-critical switch operations.
Extended Fabric (#7803): Extended Fabric Activation extends SAN fabrics beyond the FC standard 10 km by optimizing the internal switch buffers to help maintain performance on ISLs at distances up to 500 km at 16 Gbps and 10,000 km at 2 Gbps.
Advanced Performance Monitor (#7804): Performance Monitoring Activation provides performance monitoring capabilities to help identify end-to-end bandwidth usage by host and target pairs, delivering information for capacity planning.
Trunking Activation (#7805): ISL Trunking Activation is designed to enable FC packets to be efficiently distributed across multiple Inter-Switch connections (links) between two SAN b-type fabric switches, while preserving in-order delivery. Both SAN b-type fabric switches must have ISL Trunking activated. ISL Trunking allows up to 8 ports (at 2, 4, 8, or 16 Gbps) between each pair of switches to be combined to form a single, logical ISL with a speed of up to 128 Gbps ISL trunks. The trunking groups are based on the user port number, with the contiguous eight ports as one group. When connecting the 16 Gbps-capable models to legacy 2, 4, or 8 Gbps-capable b-type fabric switch models, ISL trunking is supported with link speeds operational at the lowest speed and FC packets distributed across ISLs for a combined bandwidth of up to 8, 64, or 128 Gbps.
Integrated Routing (#7807): Integrated Routing allows any 16 Gbps FC port in a SAN96B-5 to be configured as an EX_port supporting Fibre Channel Routing (FCR). FCR support on the 8 or 16 Gbps ports is a native capability; hence these ports are referred to as native EX_ports. FCR capability on native EX_ports requires the Integrated Routing feature license (#7807). This functionality eliminates the need to add a routing blade or router for FCR purposes, and also increases the bandwidth for each FC router connection when connected to another 8 or 16 Gbps capable port.
24-port Activation (#7812): The SAN96B-5 switch ships with the first 48 ports activated in the base product, and additional ports can activated in increments of 24 ports on demand. Additional port activation is available with this optional feature to enable 48 to 72 to 96 ports. The port activation feature does not include fiber optic transceivers, however, all activated ports must be populated with transceivers.
Integrated 10 Gbps FC Activation (#7813): FC ports on the SAN96B-5 are capable of running at 2, 4, 8, 10, and 16 Gbps. A 10 Gbps FC feature license must be installed before any port can run at 10 Gbps speed. All activated ports on the SAN96B-5 are enabled for 10 Gbps FC, but the quantity and specific range of ports that are supported for 10 Gbps FC use may be restricted. 10 Gbps FC support is limited only to the first eight ports on the switch.
SAN96B-5 Enterprise Advanced Bundle (#7814): The SAN96B-5 Enterprise Package offers a convenient method to order a set of optional features bundled into one orderable feature number. Feature #7814 consists of one of each Fabric Watch (#7802), Extended Fabric (#7803), Advanced Performance Monitor (#7804), and Trunking Activation (#7805).
SAN96B-5 Firmware upgrade renewal, one year (#7726): The initial purchase of an IBM System Networking SAN96B-5 includes one year of firmware upgrade entitlement. This feature provides one additional year of renewal for upgrades included in future releases of the FOS firmware. You are not eligible to access new features and functions without the purchase of this feature.
SAN96B-5 Firmware upgrade renewal, two years (#7727): The initial purchase of an IBM System Networking SAN96B-5 includes one year of firmware upgrade entitlement. This feature provides two additional years of renewal for upgrades included in future releases of the FOS firmware. You are not eligible to access new features and functions without the purchase of this feature.
