Description |
The IBM XIV Storage System is designed to:
- Support users requiring Fibre Channel (FC) or Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) host connectivity
- Support a high level of consistent performance by avoiding no data hot-spots using a grid-based storage device
- Enable high-redundancy through the use of unique grid-based rebuild technology
- Provide support for useable capacity points between 27 TB and 79 TB
- Support up to 24 x 4Gb Fibre Channel ports for host connectivity
- Support up to 6 x 1Gb iSCSI ports for host connectivity
- Support up to 120 GB of total system cache
- Offer a three-year warranty
The IBM XIV Storage System is comprised of the hardware Machine type 2812 and Model A14 and the requisite software 5639-XXA. The solution is designed to support enterprise-class storage requirements for FCP and iSCSI capable hosts.
The XIV Storage System Model A14 is available in configurations with six, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, or fifteen modules. All initial configurations are shipped with a 42U industry-standard rack. This rack includes all required UPS, power, and internal connectivity cables needed for initial installation and potential field module upgrades. The initial configuration is field-upgradeable with one or more additional data modules, up to the maximum of fifteen total interface and data modules.
The following table depicts the configurations supported on the XIV Storage System Model A14:
Total Modules 6 9 10 11 12 13 14 15 Useable 27 43 50 54 61 66 73 79 Capacity (TB) Interface Modules 3 6 6 6 6 6 6 6 (feature #1100 or #1101) Data Modules 3 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 (feature #1105 or #1106) Disk Drives 72 108 120 132 144 156 168 180 Fibre Channel 8 16 16 20 20 24 24 24 Ports iSCSI Ports 0 4 4 6 6 6 6 6 Memory (GB) 48 72 80 88 96 104 112 120
A patch panel is integrated into the IBM XIV Storage System for ease of user connectivity. Be aware that the optical cables that connect the patch panel to the rest of the device are 50 micron optical cables. Ideally, the cables that connect to this patch panel should also be 50 micron optical cables. Refer to the Installation and Planning Guide for more information.
You must also order the requisite IBM XIV Storage System Software for each module in the rack. Refer to the announcement for 5639-XXA for details on IBM XIV Storage System Software functionality.
A Capacity on Demand ordering option is also available. This configuration will consist of six CoD interface modules (feature 1111) and nine CoD data modules (feature 1116). In addition, you must order a minimum of four activation features (1120). All CoD increments must be activated within a twelve-month period from the date of installation; all such activation is permanent.
Contact your IBM representative to obtain additional information regarding CoD offering contracts, terms, and conditions.

Planning information
Customer responsibilities
Installation planning
Installation planning is a customer responsibility. Installation planning and usage documentation and resources may be found at the IBM product support Web site.
Customer documentation, safety, and warranty information for the IBM XIV Storage System and IBM XIV Storage System Software products can also be found at
Logical configuration planning and creation
Logical configuration planning and creation are customer responsibilities. Logical configuration refers to defining hosts, volumes, and LUNs, mapping to hosts, defining event notifications, defining target connectivity, defining mirroring, defining snapshots and all actions related to implementation of the XIV Storage System within the customer's IT environment, other than physical installation.
Creation of the initial logical configuration and all subsequent modifications to the logical configuration are customer responsibilities. The logical configuration can be created, applied, and modified using the IBM XIV GUI or XCLI. This XIV GUI provides a very easy to use, and straightforward option for accomplishing these tasks, and is the recommended method.
IBM SmoothStart Implementation and Configuration Services are also available for those customers who prefer to have IBM complete the initial configuration for them. Additional services are also available. See the Services section of this announcement for more information on available services.
Cable orders
There are two types of cables available for host attachment to the XIV Storage System. Feature 3900 should be used to attach iSCSI hosts and features 3910 and 3920 are to be used to connect hosts via fiber optic cables. All Fibre Channel connections to the XIV device should be made with 50 micron (multimode) fiber optic cables.
Security, auditability, and control
This product uses the security and auditability features of the host hardware, host software, and/or application software to which it is attached.
The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communications facilities.

Three years.
Warranty service
If required, IBM provides repair or exchange service depending on the types of warranty service specified for the machine. IBM will attempt to resolve your problem over the telephone, or electronically via an IBM Web site. You must follow the problem determination and resolution procedures that IBM specifies. Scheduling of service will depend upon the time of your call and is subject to parts availability. If applicable to your product, parts considered Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs) will be provided as part of the machine's standard warranty service.
Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed. The specified level of warranty service may not be available in all worldwide locations. Additional charges may apply outside IBM's normal service area. Contact your local IBM representative or your reseller for country- and location-specific information.
CRU Service
IBM provides replacement CRUs to you for you to install. CRU information and replacement instructions are shipped with your machine and are available from IBM upon your request. CRUs are designated as being either a Tier 1 or a Tier 2 CRU.
Tier 1 CRU
Installation of Tier 1 CRUs is your responsibility. If IBM installs a Tier 1 CRU at your request, you will be charged for the installation.
Tier 2 CRU
You may install a Tier 2 CRU yourself or request IBM to install it, at no additional charge.
Based upon availability, CRUs will be shipped for next business day (NBD) delivery. IBM specifies, in the materials shipped with a replacement CRU, whether a defective CRU must be returned to IBM. When return is required, return instructions and a container are shipped with the replacement CRU. You may be charged for the replacement CRU if IBM does not receive the defective CRU within 15 days of your receipt of the replacement.
The following parts have been designated as Tier 1 CRUs:
- None
On-site Service
IBM will repair the failing machine at your location and verify its operation. You must provide a suitable working area to allow disassembly and reassembly of the IBM machine. The area must be clean, well lit, and suitable for the purpose.
Service level is 24 hours per day, 7 days a week, 4 hour average, same day response.
Non-IBM parts service
Warranty service
IBM is now shipping machines with selected non-IBM parts that contain an IBM field replaceable unit (FRU) part number label. These parts are to be serviced during the IBM machine warranty period. IBM is covering the service on these selected non-IBM parts as an accommodation to their customers, and normal warranty service procedures for the IBM machine apply.
Warranty service upgrades
During the warranty period, warranty service upgrades provide an enhanced level of On-site Service for an additional charge. Service levels are response-time objectives and are not guaranteed. See the Warranty service section for additional details.
