Overview

The System Storage™ Productivity Center is a server designed to provide a consolidated point of management and configuration for the storage infrastructure. IBM TotalStorage® Productivity Center Basic Edition offers valued capabilities for heterogeneous storage management, whereas device utilities can be limited. SSPC allows for quicker deployment of what traditionally would require multiple servers, greater cost, and complexity. SSPC V1.2 is preloaded with the following software:

  • TotalStorage Productivity Center Basic Edition
  • TotalStorage Productivity Center for Replication
  • DS3000 and DS4000™ Storage Manager GUI
  • System Storage SAN Volume Controller (SVC), Common Information Model (CIM) agent, and SVC Console GUI

SSPC is directly linked to the DS8000™ Storage Manager GUI, which is embedded in the System Storage DS8000.

System Storage TS3310 and TS3500 tape library administrators can take advantage of SSPC by using IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center, which provides the following:

  • Discovery, monitoring, and asset and capacity reporting
  • Interception of tape-related indications
  • Centralized launching of the library Web GUIs
  • Topology Viewer Integration

The SSPC (2805-MC2) server is based on the IBM System x3550 server running Microsoft® Windows® 2003 Enterprise Edition. SSPC offers optional features for performance upgrades and a second power supply to ensure availability. The performance upgrade option includes two additional processors and 4 GB of RAM. The redundant power supply option is designed to enhance reliability by providing failover support from one power supply to another.

The SPPC (2805-MC2) server requires that the IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center Basic Edition license be purchased along with the server. Refer to Software Announcement 207-263 , dated October 23, 2007, TotalStorage Productivity Center Basic Edition V3.3. IBM TotalStorage Productivity Center Basic Edition includes capabilities such as storage topology viewer, monitoring, alerting, reporting, and provisioning.

Greater value can be gained by the purchase of additional software, which can easily be enabled on a single SSPC server. These separately purchased software products include:

  • TotalStorage Productivity Center Standard Edition
    • TotalStorage Productivity Center for Disk
    • TotalStorage Productivity Center for Data
    • TotalStorage Productivity Center for Fabric
  • TotalStorage Productivity for Replication
    • TotalStorage Productivity Center for Replication Two-Site BC
    • TotalStorage Productivity Center for Replication Three-Site BC

Note: The hardware and software interoperability for the products referenced in this announcement will vary. Refer to the Storage Support Web site

IBM Electronic Services

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
