Description

The IBM System Storage N series N7700 storage controllers are designed to interoperate with products capable of data transmission in the industry-standard iSCSI, CIFS, FCP, and NFS protocols. These include the IBM System p™, IBM System i™ (NFS only), IBM System x™, and IBM System z™ (NFS only) servers. The N7700 storage controllers consist of the Model  A11 and Model A21, and associated software.

The Model A11 is designed to provide a single-node storage controller with iSCSI support, and NFS, CIFS, and FCP support via optional features. The N7700 is a 6U storage controller that must be mounted in a standard 19-inch rack. The N7700 storage controller does not include storage in the base chassis. The base chassis includes:

  • Two AMD 2.6 GHz Opteron 252 processors
  • 16 GB of DDR-333 memory
  • 512 MB of non-volatile random access memory (NVRAM)
  • Six integrated Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 ports
  • Eight integrated 4 Gbps Fibre Channel ports
  • Dual redundant hot-plug integrated power supplies and cooling fans
  • Three PCI-X expansion slots for additional FC HBAs or Gigabit Ethernet (NICs)
  • Six PCIe expansion slots (one reserved for NVRAM)
  • One serial console port

The maximum number of additional expansion adapters is eight. One expansion slot is used for the standard (included with the N7700) 512 MB NVRAM adapter card.

The Model A11 can be upgraded to a maximum of 14 multipath (loop A and loop B) FC loops (28 2-Gbps FC ports) via the addition of optional FC HBAs for Disk Attachment (feature number 1014, 1029, or 1035). The 14 loops will support a maximum of 840 total disk drives, though not all loops can be fully populated.

The Model A11 can be upgraded to a maximum of 14 Gigabit Ethernet ports via the addition of two optional quad-port copper Gigabit (NICs) (feature number 1009).

The Model A11 may be upgraded to a Model A21. The upgrade from a Model A11 to a Model A21 is a disruptive upgrade.

The Model A21 is designed to provide identical function as the N7700 Model A11, but with the addition of a second processing node and the Clustered Failover (CFO) licensed function. The Model A21 also supports a maximum of 840 drives, 32 GB of DDR-333 memory, and 14 backend Fiber Channel loops.

The Model A21 consists of four processors that are designed to provide failover and failback function, helping improve overall availability. For the Model A21, each node is a 6U rack-mountable storage controller. Therefore, the Model  A21 occupies a total of 12U of rack space.

The Model A21 includes:

  • Four AMD 2.6 GHz Opteron 252 processors
  • 32 GB of DDR-333 memory
  • 1 GB of NVRAM
  • 12 integrated Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 ports
  • 16 integrated 4 Gbps FC ports
  • Dual redundant hot-plug integrated power supplies and cooling fans
  • Six PCI-X expansion slots for additional FC HBAs or Gigabit Ethernet NICs
  • 12 PCIe expansion slots (2 reserved for NVRAM)
  • Two serial console ports

For the Model A21, the maximum number of additional expansion adapters is 16. The Model A21 can be upgraded to a maximum of 14 multipath (loop A and loop B) FC loops (28 4-Gbps FC ports) via the addition of optional FC HBAs for Disk Attachment (feature number 1014, 1029, or 1035). The Model A21 can be upgraded to a maximum of 20 Gigabit Ethernet ports via the addition of four optional quad-port copper Gigabit Ethernet NICs (feature number 1009).

The physical proximity of the two processing nodes within a Model A21 (with respect to each other) is determined by which Infiniband cluster interconnect cables are ordered (feature numbers 1037, 1038, 1039, 1040, and 1041). Optical cables, number 1040 and number 1041, also require feature number 1042.

The N7700 storage controller Models A11 and A21 require at least one storage expansion unit, either an EXN1000, EXN2000, or EXN4000. The EXN1000 storage expansion unit provides a 3U rack-mountable disk enclosure containing 5 and up to a maximum of 14, serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) disk drives, either in 250 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB, or 1 TB physical capacities. The 1 TB disk drives require Data ONTAP 7.2.4, or later.

The EXN2000 and EXN4000 storage expansion units provide a 3U rack-mountable disk enclosure containing 5 and up to a maximum of 14, FC disk drives. The EXN2000 supports the following FC disk drive speeds and capacities:

  • 15,000 revolutions per minute (15K RPM) in 72 GB and 144 GB capacities
  • 10,000 revolutions per minute (10K RPM) in 72 GB, 144 GB, and 300 GB capacities

Each EXNx000 storage expansion unit contains a maximum of 14 disk drives, all of a particular type (rotational speed and capacity). For the initial order of the IBM System Storage N series, you may not include EXNx000 storage expansion units containing more than two types (rotational speed and capacity) of disk drives.

The maximum raw storage capacity of the N7700 system is determined only by the number of disk drives supported. The N7700 Model A11 and Model A21 both support 840 drives (regardless of capacity).

The following table describes the maximum supported total physical storage capacity for the N7700:

                                       Maximum Maximum Maximum

SnapVault Primary and SnapManager are not included in this bundle.

Adv. Single Instance Storage (A-SIS) (#7632 and #7682): This feature is designed to provide block-level deduplication within the entire flexible volume on an IBM N series storage controller that has the NearStore feature enabled. A-SIS only stores unique data blocks in the flexible volume and creates a small amount of additional metadata in the process. Each block of data has a digital "signature" that is compared to all other signatures in the flexible volume. If an exact byte-for-byte block match exists on the flexible volume, the duplicate block is discarded and its disk space is reclaimed.

Operations Manager Core (OMC)

The OMC features are designed to provide a central point of control and to provide alerts, reports, and configuration tools. These tools are designed to help manage storage and content delivery infrastructure, consistent with business requirements, and help maximize availability and reduce total cost of ownership.

OMC provides a license that allows the use of the OMC features on the N series machine for which they are ordered. This machine is the "managing" machine; those to be managed are the "managed" machines. All OMC features must be ordered for only the managing machine. One tier license feature must be ordered for each node to be managed, including the nodes of the managing machine.

Model A11 consists of one node; Model A21 consists of two nodes. On the initial order, the number (quantity) of the tier features ordered defines the number of managed nodes, and the N series machine types and models, for which the feature is authorized. That number may be increased via a subsequent (MES) order by ordering the incremental number of OMC tier x license features (#826x). The MES order must be for the managing machine. For example, if the number of nodes to be managed is to be increased by ten, the number of #826x features, which must be ordered in the MES order, is ten. Any combination of #826x features may be included in the same MES order.

It is necessary to select the appropriate tier for each N series machine you will be managing with the OMC license. Multiple N series machines are managed with one OMC license, but the support for multiple machines must be reflected in the tiers that are ordered. The relationship of N series machines to tiers, and associated feature numbers, is as follows.

              Machine Operations Manager feature

A20 8267 Ops Mgr Core tier 7 license
G10 8267 Ops Mgr Core tier 7 license
G20 8267 Ops Mgr Core tier 7 license

G21 8267 Ops Mgr Core tier 7 license

For example, to use OMC to manage one N3700 Model A20, five N5200 Model  A10s, and two N7900 Model G21s, you would order two of #8262, five of #8263, and four of #8267.

The initial order of these features provides a key that allows OMC support of the number of nodes specified. When the number of nodes is increased by a subsequent order, a new key is assigned allowing use of OMC for the new total number of nodes. The old key is rendered obsolete.

Note: The OMC requires only one of feature #8258, regardless of the number of nodes to be managed.

Op Mgr Store Resource Mgmt (#8257): This feature provides advanced function of Operations Manager. It is designed to provide detailed storage utilization reports to aid capacity planning, consumption management, data migration, and chargeback.

This feature requires one of the OMC tier license features.

Protection Manager

This feature provides backup and replication management software for an N series disk-based data protection environment. It is designed to help protect data and support high productivity by providing policy-based management, including when used in automated data protection configurations.

At least one of the OMC tier license features is a prerequisite of the Protection Manager feature.

Protection Manager provides a license that allows the use of the Protection Manager features on the N series machine for which they are ordered. This machine is the "managing" machine; those to be managed are the "managed" machines. All Protection Manager features must be ordered for only the managing machine.

That number may be increased via a subsequent (MES) order by ordering the incremental number of Protection Manager tier x license features (#82xx). The MES order must be for the managing machine. For example, if the number of nodes to be managed is to be increased by ten, the number of #82xx features, which must be ordered in the MES order, is ten. Any combination of #82xx features may be included in the same MES order.

It is necessary to select the appropriate tier for each N series machine you will be managing with the Protection Manager license. Multiple N series machines are managed with one Protection Manager license, but the support for multiple machines must be reflected in the tiers that are ordered. The relationship of N series machines to tiers, and associated feature numbers, is as follows.

You should purchase Protection Manager license for all nodes running SnapMirror (Source or Destination) and SnapVault (Primary or Secondary) that you want to manage with Protection Manager. Operation Manager is a prerequisite for each system to be managed using Protection Manager. The Protection Manager serial number should be tied to the same managing machine serial number against which the Operation Manager is ordered. The Operation Manager and Protection Manager license keys must be activated on the same managing machine.

Miscellaneous hardware features

Rack installation

Either feature number 9201 or 9202, but not both, must be included in the order for N7700 Model A11 or A21.

Plant install in 2101 rack (#9201): This feature specifies that the N7700 will be installed in an IBM System Storage 2101 Model N00 System Rack, by IBM manufacturing, prior to shipment. When selecting this feature, a 2101 Model N00 rack order must be tied to the N7700 order using the multisystem order function.

Field install rack mount kit (#9202): This feature specifies that the N7700 is to be installed in the field in a customer-provided rack. Rack mounting hardware is included.

Uninstalled code authorization (#9550): This feature authorizes IBM to ship the N series machine without the software having been preloaded. When this feature is specified, the license function activation codes will be shipped separately. Installation of the activation codes is a customer responsibility.

MES Order Indicator (#9555): This feature indicates a field order for cables and will be automatically added by e-config during the first occurrence of a field order for cables. It is for administrative purposes only.

IGF Transaction Indicator (#9556): This specify feature is used to designate that a new N7700 Model A11 or Model A21 is involved in an IBM Global Financing transaction (lease or financing). It is for administrative purposes only.

For a new N7700 order that includes #7xxx licensed function features (excluding feature #7600 or #7650), the IGF Transaction Indicator feature must be ordered as a Record Purposes Only (RPO) MES to the N7700. This feature is field-install only and cannot be included on the initial N7700 order.

This feature should not be used for any other #7xxx licensed function transactions. It is not required when adding additional #7xxx licensed functions to an installed N7700.

Configuration specify features

Feature #9557, #9558, and #9559 must be specified to verify that sufficient Fibre Channel ports (and sufficient FC HBA for Disk, Dual-port adapters, #1014) are included in the initial order for an N7700 storage controller.

For a Model A11, the maximum number of feature #9557 that may be specified is eight and the total number of feature #9558 and #9559 may not exceed eight.

For a Model A21, the maximum number of feature #9557 that may be specified is 16 and the total number of feature #9558 and #9559 may not exceed 14.

Num. of FC Target Ports (#9557): This no-charge feature specifies the number of onboard Fibre Channel ports that are to be configured as FCP target ports. Target ports added via feature number 1017 must not be included in this number. FCP target ports are used for Fibre Channel attachment of the N7700 to application servers (containing Fibre Channel HBAs) or to Fibre Channel storage area networks.

This feature is only relevant if you intend to use the Fibre Channel Protocol feature on the N7700. For a Model A11, valid choices are 0, 2, 4, and 8. For a Model A21, valid choices are 0, 4, 8, and 16.

Num. of FC Storage Loops (#9558): This no-charge feature specifies, on the initial order of an N7700 storage controller, the number of dual-path Fibre Channel storage loops that are to be configured for the attachment of EXN2000 storage expansion units. The EXN2000 expansion units, included in the initial order, will be distributed across the specified number of storage loops.

Num. of SATA Storage Loops (#9559): This no-charge feature specifies, on the initial order of an N7700 storage controller, the number of dual-path Fibre Channel storage loops that are to be configured for the attachment of EXN1000 SATA storage expansion units. The EXN1000 expansion units, included in the initial order, will be distributed across the specified number of storage loops.

Dual-path FC Cabling (#9560 — Model A21 only): This no-charge, administrative feature enables multipath FC cabling. It is designed to improve reliability, availability, and serviceability of the expansion units attached to the storage controller by creating two redundant paths from each storage controller to each loop of the expansion units.

This feature requires the order of one additional 5-meter optical cable feature (#2044) and one SFP GBIC feature (#2010) on each expansion unit (EXNx000) that will be directly attached to the storage controller. Note that these are features of the EXN1000 and EXN4000. If dual-path FC cabling is installed, every storage loop of the storage controller must be "dual-path".

Feature number 9560 is a plant-only feature — it may be specified when the N7700 Model A21 is initially ordered. It may not be specified for an MES (field) order. Dual-path FC cabling may be implemented on installed N7700 Model A21 storage controllers via an MES order of one each of feature #2010 and any of the FC optical cables (#2042, #2043, or #2044) for each expansion unit in the configuration that is attached directly to the storage controller (N7700 Model A21). The FC cables must be of sufficient length.

The FC HBA for Disk, Dual-port feature (#1014) may be required if additional ports are needed.
