Overview
Bottom rule

Several new enhancements are now available for IBM PurePower System Solution.

IBM i support for PurePower System Solution and the IBM Power System S822 server

IBM i 7.1 TR11 and IBM i 7.2 TR3 now support PurePower System Solution and the IBM Power System S822 server. IBM i support requires VIOS (no native I/O) and also requires FW840.

With firmware code level 840, the 2U Power S822 (8284-22A) supports IBM i 7.2 or IBM i 7.1 with special terms and conditions. Technology Refresh 3 or later for IBM i 7.2 or Technology Refresh 11 or later for IBM i 7.1 is required. Multiple IBM i partitions each up to a maximum of two cores are supported. The Power S822 software tier is only P10.

Virtual I/O Server (VIOS) is required for all the I/O that IBM i accesses. There is no "native" I/O support. Note that async or bisync adapters or crypto cards are not supported under VIOS. Thus IBM i applications requiring use of these adapters are not a good fit for the Power S822. Note IBM i 7.2 clients can connect to a LAN-attached OEM device that has downstream async connections. IBM i partitions accessing direct attached disk or SSD through VIOS must use 4k byte sector drives, not 5xx byte sector drives. The 4k drives are required for performance reasons.

This IBM i support fulfills the Statement of Direction previously issued for PurePower systems.

Improvements to PurePower Integrated Manager

PurePower Integrated Manager will gather and display the current level of firmware on all components in the offering and compare those levels against the current existing tested stack. It will notify you of any levels that are out of compliance, so that you can schedule manual updates.

Virtual HMC (vHMC)

Today, PurePower has a dedicated hardware management console (HMC) in the offering. In this release, PurePower will take advantage of the vHMC application.

The vHMC will allow you to manage the PurePower POWER8® servers through a guest partition on PurePower Integrated Manager. You will then be able to use the HMC node as a mirror image for fail-over purposes.

Translations

Prior to this release, PurePower documentation was supplied only in English. With this release, clients will have the ability to order publications in additional languages.

Mixture of nodes in PurePower

Previously, PurePower did not allow a mixture of POWER8 Compute Nodes (8284-22A and 8284-22L) in a single rack. This release allows you to order a mixture of nodes in a single rack.

Description
Bottom rule

Built on POWER8 technology, IBM PurePower System Solution is a complete, flexible cloud converged infrastructure offering with integrated expertise. This offering seamlessly integrates and optimizes all compute, storage, and networking resources to deliver ready-to-deploy infrastructure out of the box. IBM PurePower System Solution can be deployed in hours versus days, and features built-in workload elasticity, automated workload scalability, and single point of management.

These fully integrated, optimized solutions can be configured flexibly for your specific business needs and may be complemented by additional support and deployment services.

IBM PurePower System Solution is made up of nine machine type models. You place your order through e-config to select and configure eight of the nine different machine type models, creating your individual PurePower System Solution configuration.

IBM's e-config will guide you step by step in selecting one 7014-B42 19-inch rack; a total of six switches, including two 2498-F48 SAN48B-5 switches, two 7120-48E management switches, and two 8831-NF2 Mellanox switches; one 7316-TF4 display; one 2076-524 V7000 controller or optional 2076-24F V7000 expansion drawer management node (8374-01M); and either the POWER8 S822L (8247-22L) server or the POWER8 S822 (8284-22A) server. The minimum quantity allowed is two servers and the maximum is twelve servers.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
