Some enhancements described were made available prior to Release 4 in modification levels of VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3.3 through Version 1 Release 3.6.
----------------------------------------

VSE/ESA(TM) Version 1 Release 4 (5750-ACD) shares the same base program of CICS/VSE(R) Version 2 Release 3 as VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 (5690-VSE). Many new optional products introduced with VSE/ESA Version 2.1 are now available for VSE/ESA Version 1.4 as well. Significant ones include LE COBOL and PL/I, VisualGen(TM), VisualLift, QMF(TM), ADSM/VSE, and DFSORT(TM)/VSE. ALERT** security products from Legent are now available as optional products for both VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 and Version 2 Release 1.

VSE/ESA Version 1.4 offers the same CICS(TM) migration facilities as Version 2 Release 1. Users can prepare and begin conversion towards a new "common" CICS, based on CICS/ESA(R) (see Future Software Support section, as in previous VSE/ESA announcements). The future CICS offering will be provided in a future release of VSE/ESA Version 2. Tools are available to aid in migration from CICS internal security to an external security manager (such as ALERT), and to aid in conversion of COBOL programs from Macro to more robust Command level interfaces.

VSE/ESA Version 2 is the VSE offering of choice for most users. VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 is being offered to those users who, for whatever reason, are unwilling or unable to migrate to Version 2 at this time.

DESCRIPTION

CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3

Additional application programming commands have been introduced in CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 to provide:

  • Command-level equivalents of functions that, until now, have been available as part of the macro-level programming interface only

  • Additional commands, brought from the CICS/ESA product, to enhance the interfaces
With these extended facilities, customers will have improved capability for developing and converting applications to use the command-level interface exclusively. Applications thus developed or converted can be run in the CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 environment, benefiting from the improved functionality, and also on later releases without requiring further change. This will provide additional time to plan for migration to subsequent versions of CICS/VSE (based on CICS/ESA) which will not support the macro-level interface.

New RESP2 options and additional CVDAs have been introduced on some commands to support the additional functionality.

One purpose of CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 is to allow customers to begin their preparations for a future CICS, thus staging much of the migration work over time on a planned basis. In addition, CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 is the coexistence release for those customers or applications that cannot migrate to a future CICS.

A utility is provided in CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 to extract all security related information from the control blocks of the customers CICS system and from the IUI control file. This helps customers to migrate from the use of internal CICS security to an external security manager like ALERT (see below). For more details, see Software Announcement 294-520, dated September 13, 1994.

The tedious process of COBOL migration can be easier than you think with the IBM COBOL and CICS Command Level Conversion Aid (CCCA) for VSE Release 1. CCCA for VSE, a program offering, helps you easily convert old COBOL source code and copy books to the new COBOL standard. CCCA for VSE converts OS/VS COBOL, DOS/VS COBOL, and COBOL 74 Standard VS COBOL II (either VS COBOL II Release 3 or VS COBOL II Release 4 (CMPR2)) source code to COBOL 85 Standard VS COBOL II Release 3 or 4 (NOCMPR2) or to IBM COBOL for VSE. You can customize this conversion process to meet your unique requirements. CCCA simplifies the migration process by:

  • Identifying and converting source code
  • Reducing the effort to convert programs
  • Minimizing conversion errors
For more details, see Software Announcement 294-811, dated December 20, 1994.

Language Environment for VSE

The following programming language programs for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 are offered as optional programs:

  • LE for VSE
  • COBOL for VSE
  • PL/I for VSE
The Language Environment (LE) for VSE/ESA (5686-067) supports a new language standard and inter-language calls. Applications can easily be ported across platforms and operating systems following this standard. LE for VSE/ESA supports new functions for both, COBOL and PL/I, such as to address the year 2000 issues to handle 2-digit years correctly.

On top of LE, the new PL/I for VSE (5686-069) introduces 31-bit addressing, which offers major application constraint relief for PL/I users. Also, a new COBOL for VSE (5686-068) is offered, which contains new functions. The offering of a more affordable COBOL complements the offering of VisualGen programs (see below), which produce COBOL source programs. For more details, see Software Announcement 294-519, dated September 13, 1994.

The old DOS PL/I programs will be withdrawn from the VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 package beginning in 1996 in a modification level before PL/I service will be discontinued June 30, 1996. See Software Announcement 295-101.

ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager for VSE/ESA (ADSM for VSE)

ADSM for VSE is a member of the ADSTAR Distributed Storage Manager family of products, and provides VSE/ESA-based backup/archive services for a variety of client platforms including DOS, OS/2(R), AIX/6000(R), Microsoft** Windows+, and Novell** NetWare** systems, and uses the host's central data storage facilities, disk and tape, for saving critical data dispersed on different workstations throughout the company. Workstation users, that is ADSM clients, can now easily backup or archive their data. The data can then be recovered at any time using ADSM's restore and retrieve functions. For more details see Software Announcement 294-536, dated September 13, 1994.

ALERT for VSE and ALERT for CICS-VSE

ALERT for VSE and ALERT for CICS-VSE, both programs of Legent Corporation, now delivered by IBM as optional programs of VSE/ESA Version 1.4, are both comprehensive, menu-driven batch security programs for the VSE batch and CICS/VSE online environments respectively.

ALERT for VSE controls access to datasets, libraries, sublibraries, programs, and other library members. It also provides a comprehensive audit trail, automatic violation reporting and report writing capabilities.

ALERT for CICS-VSE secures transactions, files, field-level resources, and maps at levels without requiring changes to use programs. It also encrypts profile information for additional security and saves you time with its modeling and grouping facilities. With the comprehensive reporting facility, you can generate a variety of useful reports for monitoring systems activity whether it be batch or real-time.

For more details refer to Software Announcement 295-150, dated April 11, 1995.

IBM VisualLift for MVS, VSE and VM

VisualLift provides a visual "face-lift" that can make existing 3270-based applications look brand new, without programming and without changing the application at the host. The VisualLift user sees a workstation screen and is able to use the mouse to access workstation controls, such as push buttons, check boxes, notebooks, etc. VisualLift provides investment protection for function-rich host applications, while at the same time making them appear brand new with little effort and minimal investment. For more details, refer to Software Announcement 294-531, dated September 13, 1994.

New Version of Sort

DFSORT/VSE Version 3 Release 1 is a fast and efficient data processing tool that provides sorting, merging, copying, and data manipulation capabilities for VSE/ESA. DFSORT/VSE exploits ESA/390(TM) and ESA/370(TM) processors and supports functions, such as 31-bit addressing, data spaces, and VSE/VSAM functions. It provides productivity features that allow user applications to work with data efficiently. For more details, refer to Software Announcement 294-521, dated September 13, 1994.

VisualGen

VisualGen is an OS/2-based application development solution for applications that run in a variety of workstation (with graphical user interface) and host environments, including VSE/ESA.

VisualGen produces applications that support CICS and batch processing and remote access to data stored on DB2(R)/VSE and VM (SQL/DS(TM)) using Distributed Relational Database Architecture(TM) (DRDA(TM)).

  • VisualGen Developer: to interactively build and test applications on a workstation

  • VisualGen Generator Option For VSE: builds optimized COBOL source code to be compiled with either VS COBOL II, or COBOL for VSE

  • VisualGen Workstation Services: to assist during preparation and execution

  • VisualGen Host Services: to assist at the host during preparation and execution
Cross System Product (CSP) definitions can be migrated to VisualGen. For additional information, refer to Software Announcements 294-335 and 294-336, dated May 24, 1994.

New Application Support Facility/VSE

Application Support Facility/VSE (ASF/VSE) Version 3 is a cross-industry product which allows the creation and processing of small to very large volumes of individual and structured documents and business correspondence. The documents can consist of text, graphics, and variable data.

ASF/VSE also integrates applications through a consistent Application Programming Interface (API). In addition the Workstation feature is required if applications running under OS/2 should be included. The workstation provides a connection to FlowMark(TM)/2, thus offering possibilities to control the processing of applications on the host. For more details, refer to Software Announcement 294-523, dated September 13, 1994.

Query Management Facility Version 3

Query Management Facility (QMF) Version 3 Release 1.1 is offered, replacing Version 1. It runs with SQL/DS and GDDM(R) in a CICS/VSE environment and is comparable to the existing QMF for MVS and VM products. QMF allows end users to query a relational database and use the resulting information to create reports and charts. For more details, see Software Announcement 293-595, dated October 12, 1993.

Distributed Workstation Feature Enhancements

The VSE Distributed Workstation Feature (DWF) provides CUA(TM) dialogs, host connections, and VSE/ESA host services to do program development on a workstation. Performance and usability have been greatly improved in various areas.

DITTO Productivity Feature

The DITTO productivity feature is offered as an optional program. It offers interactive enhancements to the base VSE program DITTO. In VSE/ESA Version 2, the DITTO Productivity Feature is included in the base program DITTO/ESA. For more details, see Software Announcement 293-466, dated September 13, 1993.

Fast Service Upgrade: Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) is provided for migrations from

  • VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3 to VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4

  • VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3 to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 (announced with VSE/ESA Version 2.1)

  • VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1
IBM 3494 Tape Library Dataserver: The IBM 3494 Tape Library Dataserver is an intermediate automated tape library. It automates retrieval, storage, and control of IBM 3490E cartridge tapes. VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 supports the automated library by:
  • An API in VSE for application programs, for example, a tape management system. This API is a front-end for both native and guest library control architectures and is designed to allow tape management products to exploit the 3494 functions and to maintain cartridge inventory synchronization between tape management catalogs and the 3494. The API needs a counterpart either in another VSE partition or in VM:
    • IBM 3494 hardware feature number 9203 (VSE Device Driver for native support in VSE), which utilizes the LAN attachment capability of the 3494
    • DFSMS(TM)/RMS in VM with appropriate PTF
3990-6 Cache: Depending on the access parameters, VSE/VSAM exploits the Record Cache I facility of the IBM 3990 Model 6. This can greatly improve cache performance for workloads that previously could not optimally exploit DASD caches.

PRODUCT POSITIONING

VSE/ESA is a member of the System/390(R) strategic family of operating systems. It offers cost-effective batch, transaction processing, and client/server capabilities. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 brings exciting new client/server capabilities to traditional VSE strengths. Alone, or in combination with VM/ESA(R), VSE/ESA is the primary S/390(R) offering for small and intermediate data centers. VSE/ESA is also the strategic S/390 offering for centrally-managed, remote unattended systems.

Major subsystems such as ACF/VTAM(R) and CICS are basically common to VSE/ESA and MVS/ESA(TM). Common enabling products such as LE COBOL and PL/I, HLASM, VisualGen, DB2/VSE (SQL/DS), QMF, and MQSeries(TM) let customers develop applications that exploit VSE/ESA and MVS/ESA affinity, offering them flexibility and protection of application investments. The value of VSE-MVS affinity can be seen by VSE customers who plan to move eventually to MVS, or large customers who are able to share key selected applications between an MVS central sites and smaller, remote VSE sites. Similarly, independent software vendors can exploit this same affinity to expand the market opportunity for their products.

VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 shares CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1. Most new optional products introduced with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 are available now for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 as well. Significant ones include LE COBOL and PL/I, VisualGen, VisualLift, QMF, ADSM/VSE and DFSORT/VSE.

VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 offers considerable added value (see chart below) and is the clear VSE offering of choice. VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 is a possible, but not necessary, step between Version 1 and Version 2. VSE/ESA Version 1 and VSE/SP users, as well as new VSE users, are encouraged to go directly to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1. VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 is offered primarily as an accommodation to meet the needs of customers who, for whatever reason, cannot or will not move to Version 2 Release 1 in the short to intermediate time frame. For example, customers with non-ESA processors or customers who recently acquired Version 1 under Graduated One-Time Charge (GOTC) terms and conditions may find Version 1 Release 4 to be an attractive interim step that prepares them for a move to Version 2 longer term.

At present, VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 is the last planned release of VSE/ESA Version 1. The successor to VSE/ESA Version 1 is available with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements: Hardware requirements are not affected by this announcement. They are the same as described in Software Announcement 292-322, dated June 16, 1992, for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3. An addition is necessary for the IBM 3494 usage: The Tape Library Dataserver IBM 3494 requires hardware (IBM 3494) feature number 9203 for native support in VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 (refer to the Software Requirements section).

Software Requirements: Software requirements are not affected by this announcement, except for the IBM 3494 usage: Guest support of the Tape Library Dataserver IBM 3494 is based on DFSMS/RMS with the appropriate PTF in VM/ESA.

Compatibility: VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 base programs did not drop intended programming interfaces. Therefore, all properly coded applications should run unchanged.

Limitations: The Distributed Workstation Feature (DWF) code no longer contains ScreenView because DWF is no longer based on ScreenView. This improves the performance and eases installation.

Performance Considerations: VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 overall performance depends on the individual hardware and software components, and on the customer's specific workload environment and setup options.

In general, the overall resource consumption for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 with CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3 will be comparable with that of VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3 with CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 2 as long as the same environment is used. The Internal Throughput Rate (ITR) ratio for batch jobs and CICS transactions will be within 3% as compared to VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3 as initial findings show this to be the case.

The VSE/VSAM support of 3990 Model 6 Record Cache can greatly improve cache performance for workloads that previously could not optimally exploit DASD caches.

Planning Information

Customer Responsibilities:

Future Hardware Support

VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 is the last release to support the following processors and devices (note that the list changed since the announcement on February 9, 1993):

  • S/370 and S/370-XA processors
  • DASD 3350
  • DASD 3375 for initial installation
  • Tape Units 3410, 8809
They are still supported in VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 to ease migration. Their support has been dropped from VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1.

Future Software Support

VSE/ESA Version 2: Since VSE/ESA Version 2 has already been announced, there are no improvements planned for the VSE/ESA Version 1 base programs beyond this announcement of Release 4.

CICS/VSE: As already announced, CICS/VSE Version 2 will be the last version to support the macro level interface and internal control block access. The API and SPI enhancements of CICS/VSE V2.3 will allow customers to migrate to a command-level-only version of CICS, and to develop command-level-only programs now.

CICS/VSE Version 2 will be the last version to support internal security. Customers requiring security will need an external security manager facility (like the ALERT products from Legent Corporation, which are offered as optional products on VSE/ESA Version 1 and Version 2) for future versions of CICS on the VSE/ESA platform, a basic form of this is intended to be provided as part of the VSE/ESA base program set.

Installability: Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) is provided for migrations from

  • VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3 to VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4

  • VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3 to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1

  • VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1
Packaging: Depending on the order, a customer receives a package containing either of the items listed below containing the VSE/ESA base license programs:
  • Four tapes with density 9/1600
  • Three tapes with density 9/6250
  • One cartridge for a 3480 cartridge unit
  • One cartridge for a 9346 cartridge unit
Depending on the order, it contains additionally one or more tapes/cartridges of the same format for the optional licensed programs, stacked one after the other on the tapes.

Program directories for all component programs both, base and optional, are contained in the package as well as hardcopy documentation (manuals), and one or more CD-ROM containing softcopy documentation if ordered.

Security, Auditability, and Control

The announced programs use the existing security and auditability features of its components.

In addition, new optional security programs are offered: ALERT from Legent corporation.

User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
