DESCRIPTION
GROWTH ENABLEMENT
The VSE system is enhanced by VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2 supporting
the 3390 Model 3, 3990 Models 2 and 3, the new family of 9345
direct-access storage devices (DASD), and the 3490E family of tape
devices.  The support of 3490E fulfills the Statement of Direction
(SOD) given in IBM Product Announcements 191-013 and 191-014 (IBM
Magnetic Tape Subsystem Enhanced Capability Models) dated
February 19, 1991.
       With VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2 the 9345 Models 1 and 2, the
3990 Models 2 and 3, the 3490, and the 3490E can directly be attached
to ESCON channels without a converter.  The 9035 ESCON converter unit
is supported.  It attaches an ESCON control unit via a parallel
channel.  These ESCON capabilities fulfill parts of the ESCON SOD
announced in IBM Programming Announcement 290-513, (VSE/ESA Version 1
Release 1), dated September 5, 1990.
SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
Reconfiguring System/390 is enhanced by a new online IOCP capability.
It creates and loads the I/O Configuration Data Sets (IOCDS) into the
Service Processor (SP) or the Processor Controller (PC)
automatically.  Previously, this function was performed via tapes and
stand alone IOCP program invocation.  This reduces the time the
system is unavailable for users when doing a new IOCP generation, and
allows complete generation of IOCDS during prime shift; restarting
the processor can then be done without systems programmer
involvement.  This function is only for ES/9000 and 3090 (TM)
processors and offers the same level of support as MVS/ESA (TM) and
VM/ESA (TM).
       Support for IBM ES/9000 Models 120, 130, 150, and 170 Battery
Backup Power Supply will be provided via an enhancement PTF to
VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2 in January 1992.  For ordering, contact
your IBM Support Center.
Battery backup is applicable only for IBM ES/9221 systems
configured with parallel or ESCON channels (no integrated adapters)
running VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2 without VM.  With battery backup
capability, VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2 holds the system status and
will attempt to recover when external power is restored before the
battery is exhausted.  While VSE/ESA with battery backup capability
will make a best effort to recover those jobs which are normally
recoverable, no guarantee of recovery is possible.
Support for the new 3490E Tape Subsystem models mentioned
above simplifies media handling because each  1/2-inch cartridge can
contain up to 400MB of data.  The Automatic Cartridge Loader extends
this capacity to 2.4GB of data per tape drive and VSE/ESA Version 1
support of the Improved Data Recording Capability (IDRC) can further
increase by up to three times the amount of data stored per  1/2-inch
tape cartridge for save/restore.
The ESCON Director allows configurations that have a VM/ESA or
MVS/ESA system supporting ESCON Director to connect devices via ESCON
Director to VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2.  This increases the
connectivity options available as it allows dynamic connection of
ESCON devices to VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2.  It also increases the
distance allowed between the processor and devices.  The attachment
of devices through ESCON Director fulfills parts of the ESCON SOD
announced in IBM Programming Announcement 290-513 (VSE/ESA Version 1
Release 1), dated September 5, 1990.
       Within VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2, VSE/VSAM Version 2
Release 1.1 offers read integrity with dataset name sharing,
concurrent write access from different VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2
systems to the same data sets, and new functions to show VSAM Local
Shared Resource (LSR) file statistics for performance tuning
purposes.  These functions are not supported by VM when VSE/VSAM is
running under VM without VSE.
Attention Routine (AR) commands are supported during system
startup for the background (BG) partition.
Interfaces to certain VSE functions are improved, offering new
possibilities for application programmers:
o   User programs can directly access the VSE library via the new
Library Application Programming Interface (Library API).
o   Job Control Language (JCL) now allows multiple user exit
routines, which especially helps in running application programs
from different programmers, for example vendors, where each of
them uses its own exit routine.
o   User profile can be maintained by a batch program; this is
especially helpful to centrally manage remote unattended systems.
o   Improved documentation of the cross partition communication
    service.
NetView File Transfer Program (FTP) Version 1 Release 1 replaces the
FTP.  This new VTAM (TM) application program enables high-volume,
bulk-data, file transfer among IBM System/370 and/or ESA/390 systems
in an SNA network.
The new release of the relational data base SQL/DS offers
language enhancements and now complies with the Federal Information
Processing Standard (FIPS) 127-1, which offers advantages in user
productivity and protection of the investment in data processing.
X.25 Network Control Program (NCP) Packet Switching Interface
(X.25 NPSI) Versions 2 and 3 are added as optional products.
The C/370 Version 2 compiler is available for VSE/ESA
Version 1 Release 2 as optional product.  This fulfills parts of the
statement of direction announced with IBM Programming Announcement
290-513 (VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 1), dated September 5, 1990.

(Compact Disc Read-Only Memory) feature is available with VSE/ESA
Version 1 Release 2.0.  This feature offers the widest range of
softcopy support for VSE/ESA.  It contains 55 of the most-commonly
used manuals for VSE/ESA and its base products.  In addition, it has
20 manuals for the following VSE/ESA optional products:  C/370, CSP,
PSF/VSE, SQL/DS, VSE/DSNX, VSE/OCCF, and VSE Software Inventory
Control.  Books on the CD-ROM are viewable via BookManager READ.
A new manual is available to all VSE licensees, VSE/ESA GUIDE
FOR SOFTWARE VENDORS.  This guide helps software vendors, business
partners, and consultants who are writing programs that are running
under VSE to familiarize themselves with the requirements to which
their programs should adhere.  Topics include:
o   IBM Contact Points for Software Vendors
o   Creating Installation Tapes
o   Installing and Customizing Your Product

PRODUCT POSITIONING
VSE/ESA Version 1 is a member of an ESA/390 family of operating
systems.  It offers full-function transaction processing and batch
capability.  Alone, or in combination with VM/ESA, VSE/ESA Version 1
can be the primary system for small and intermediate-sized data
centers.
VSE/ESA is the preferred ESA/390 offering for new remote
unattended networks because of MVS affinity and unattended operation
characteristics introduced with VSE/SP Version 4.
Major subsystems such as ACF/VTAM and CICS are basically
compatible between VSE and MVS.  Enabling products VS COBOL II,
C/370, CSP, and SQL/DS allow the VSE customer to develop SAA (TM)
applications.  Thus, VSE/ESA Version 1 offers a platform with unique
affinity to the richer functions and capabilities of MVS/ESA.
       VSE/ESA Version 1 replaces VSE/SP.  Introduction of VSE/ESA
Version 1 Release 2 demonstrates IBM's commitment to continued
investment in VSE.

PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS:  For programming requirements, refer to the
following IBM Programming Announcements:
o   290-513 (VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 1), dated September 5, 1990,
    for VSE/ESA Version 1, and
o   290-768 (IBM VSE/VSAM Version 2 Release 1 for VM), dated
    December 18, 1990.
To run VSE/VSAM Version 2 Release 1.1, PTFs are required on
the various releases of VM.  To order, contact your IBM Support
Center.
COMPATIBILITY:  Among other changes in VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2
two addresses are affected:
o   System Communication region (SYSCOM) was moved; its address is
still located at storage location X'80' and can be obtained by
using the macro ASYSCOM as in earlier releases.
o   Advanced Telecommunications Vector Table pointer (VTAM ATCVT) at
location X'10'.  Future releases of ACF/VTAM will initialize the
    ATCVT at location X'408'.
Concerned applications may migrate now with the help of
the Program Temporary Fix (PTF) for APAR DY40607 for ACF/VTAM
    Version 3 for VSE/ESA.
To order the PTF, contact your IBM Support Center.
VSE/VSAM Version 2 Release 1.1 allows sharing of files across
VSE/ESA systems.  Full read and write integrity for a file accessed
from different requestors is ensured by use of SHAREOPTIONS(4 4).
VSE/VSAM releases prior to Version 2 Release 1.1 ignore the second
option parameter.  Therefore, if file sharing in write mode between
CPUs is used, make sure you use the correct levels for all
participating systems:
o   Install the PTF for APAR DY40256 for VSE/VSAM Version 1
    Release 3.0 and/or VSE/VSAM Version 1 Release 4.0.
o   Install VSE/VSAM Version 2 Release 1.1 (and VSE/ESA Version 1
    Release 2) for VSE/VSAM Version 2 Release 1.0 (and VSE/ESA
    Release 1.X).
LIMITATIONS:  VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2 does not support the ESCON
Director as a device.  ESCON support in VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2
allows attachment of ESCON capable devices via an ESCON Director
through static or dynamic connections with the following operational
considerations:
o   A VM or MVS operating system that supports the ESCON Director as
a device must be connected to the ESCON Director in order to
perform all configuration management functions, including error
message handling.  Valid environments include, for example,
    -   A VM system supporting VSE as a guest on the same processor,
    -   A VM or MVS system on the same processor in a different
logical partition (LPAR) under Processor Resource System
        Manager (PR/SM (TM)), or
    -   A VM or MVS system on a different processor.
o   No configuration management can be done from VSE.
o   VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2 will not be aware of any
configuration changes initiated by an operating system supporting
the ESCON Director.  Therefore, steps must be taken to ensure
that configuration changes do not affect the connections that are
    in use by VSE.
(TM) Trademark of International Business Machines Corporation.
PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:  VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2 overall
performance depends on the individual hardware and software
components, and on the customers specific workload environment and
setup options.
VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 2 overall performance and capacity
is the same as for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 1, which provided a
significant growth enablement compared to VSE/SP due to more real
storage, more private space, more partitions, more address spaces,
more VSIZE, and support of ESA/390 architecture.
The support of the new 3390-3 and 9345 devices allows improved
DASD I/O performance.  With the support of the new 3490E tape devices
the performance of tape bound jobs is improved.
The provision of a new macro offering the VSAM LSR buffer hit
ratio statistics per subpool allows better tuning of those
environments.
