IBM Migration Utility for z/OS and OS/390 — Generate and Maintain Standard IBM COBOL Reports Using Easytrieve Plus Language Statements from Computer Associates

 ENUS202-094.PDF (40KB)

At a Glance

The IBM Migration Utility for z/OS and OS/390 allows customers to create standard COBOL reports using Computer Associates' Easytrieve Plus language without Easytrieve Plus installed. The Migration Utility can be used in several ways:

  • Existing Easytrieve reports can be converted once to standard COBOL, then run and maintained as COBOL programs. Modifications to reports can be made using the Easytrieve language, and converted to COBOL using the Migration Utility.
  • Existing Easytrieve programs can be converted to standard COBOL, and enhanced or extended by embedding new COBOL statements in the programs.
  • New Easytrieve reports can be generated using the Easytrieve language, and compiled directly into standard COBOL with the Migration Utility. These can be ad hoc, one-time reports, or they can be saved as COBOL applications for ongoing use.
  • The utility augments Easytrieve logic with embedded COBOL subroutines and standard COBOL programming.
  • Easytrieve applications can be ported to any platform with a supported COBOL compiler including AIX and OS/400.

Overview

The IBM Migration Utility for z/OS™ and OS/390® creates standard COBOL reports from Easytrieve Plus language statements, without Easytrieve Plus installed, and which run in place of the Easytrieve run-time interpreter. These applications can then be modified, maintained, and enhanced via standard COBOL programming.

The Migration Utility can be used to replace Easytrieve Plus for existing reports, to modify or enhance converted reports using Easytrieve language, or to create new reports using the Easytrieve Plus language.

In addition to cost savings, the use of the Migration Utility provides:

  • Easy extensibility to Easytrieve reports via standard COBOL programming
  • Improved performance in I/O, searching, sorting and the ability to port Easytrieve applications to any platform with a supported COBOL compiler including AIX® and OS/400® (subject to any limitations that compiler has)

Supported file types include:

  • Virtual Storage Access Method (VSAM)
  • Queued Sequential Access Method (QSAM)
  • Sequential Access Method (SAM)
  • DB2® (Native and Easytrieve mode)
  • Tape files and unit record devices

Key Prerequisites

One of these operating systems:

  • OS/390 V2.6 (5647-A01), or later
  • z/OS V1.1 (5694-A01), or later

Planned Availability Date

April 19, 2002

Description

The Migration Utility reads Easytrieve language statements, converts them to a neutral meta-format, generates standard COBOL statements, compiles (and optionally saves), and executes the compiled COBOL code. The generated COBOL source can be edited to include additional logic not supported by Easytrieve, or to make modifications to report content as required by changing business conditions.

These uses of the Migration Utility for z/OS and OS/390 not only saves on Easytrieve Plus license costs, but delivers several additional benefits, including superior efficiency in I/O handling and memory management, improved performance in sorting and searching, coexistence with other language environments and platforms, accessibility to all COBOL debugging tools, and the ability to augment Easytrieve logic with embedded COBOL subroutines. Additionally, the Migration Utility will:

  • Generate standard COBOL statements that can be imbedded in the Easytrieve Plus program
  • Provide utilities that are available for converting Easytrieve Plus record layouts to COBOL copy books
  • Allow COBOL copy books to be directly used in Easytrieve Plus programs

The Migration Utility for z/OS and OS/390 supports the following file types:

  • VSAM
  • QSAM
  • SAM
  • DB2 (Native and Easytrieve mode)
  • Tape files
  • Unit record devices

Use of the Migration Utility for z/OS and OS/390 not only eliminates the Easytrieve Plus license costs, it delivers several additional benefits:

  • Total cost of ownership is reduced.
  • COBOL I/O handling and memory management are more efficient.
  • COBOL Sorting and Searching is more efficient.
  • COBOL coexists better with other languages and environments.
  • All COBOL debugging tools can be used for debugging.
  • More COBOL skills are available in the labor market for program support.
  • COBOL is portable to other platforms (subject to supplier's functional limitations).

Sample JCL is provided for each job step in the translation process, which can be adapted to the user's operating standards. The Migration Utility ships as a set of macros which interprets the Easytrieve syntax and generates the meta-format, and load modules which perform the rest of the conversion to COBOL. The sample JCL then invokes the COBOL compile, link, and go steps.

Globalization Support: This initial release of Migration Utility provides English language single-byte character support.

Accessibility by People with Disabilities

The following features support use by people with disabilities:

  • Operation by keyboard alone
  • Optional font enlargement and high-contrast display settings

The programs in this announcement have one charge unit — Value Units.

Value Units for IBM 9672 processors will be based upon the full capacity of these systems. This is applicable to all S/390®-based systems that are measured on MSU capacity. Information on MSU capacities can be found in the IBM System/370™, System/390® and zSeries Machine Exhibit Z125-3901.

Value Units for zSeries will be based upon full MSU capacity as defined in the Machine Exhibits .

There will be a tool available that provides support for transforming the MSU-based capacities of S/390 systems to new Value Units by calculating the applicable number of Value Units for a given number of MSUs.

When calculating the total number of Value Units, the sum is to be rounded up to the next integer.

250 Value Units 0002

Example: For a program running on machines with 1,000 MSUs requiring 270 Value Units, would order feature number 0001, quantity 20 and feature number 0002, quantity 1.

Note: For actual feature codes, see below.

H50 =  8.00   Value Units
H70 = 12.00   Value Units

P/390, R/390, IBM 3006 = 2.00 Value Units
