Overview

VSE/ESA™ Version 2 Release 5 adds new interoperability and connectivity capabilities that helps VSE customers take advantage of IBM's Application Framework for e-business to exploit new opportunities and protect existing IT assets. It is the replacement for all previous versions and releases of VSE.

Interoperability between VSE and other platforms is expanded with new e-business connectors. These connectors allow easy access to VSE resources from new applications running on a variety of platforms. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 includes server code that runs on VSE itself, plus associated JavaBeans and servlets that run on Java-capable clients. Supported clients include systems running WebSphere™ Application Server, or equivalent.

VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 adds security and interoperability improvements to MQSeries® Version 2 Release 1.

CICS® connectivity is enhanced with the addition of CICS Web Support and the CICS 3270 Bridge. By leveraging existing CICS skills and core applications, Web access to CICS may help VSE customers implement e-business solutions at a low cost, with low risk, and fast time-to-market.

DB2® connectivity is also improved with DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1, by adding the capability to use Distributed Relational Database Architecture™ (DRDA®) with TCP/IP, as well as SNA. Packaging is enhanced with the addition of DB2 to the VSE Base as a key-enabled, priced component of VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5.

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 adds new facilities required for e-business connectors, CICS Web Support, DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1, and VSE/POWER PNET. In addition, TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 includes accumulated service, functional and performance improvements, along with enhanced quality and diagnostics enhancements, and better documentation.

Other VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 enhancements include an increase in dynamic classes, a hashing algorithm for faster access to large VSAM LSR buffer pools, support for the ESS FlashCopy feature, VSE/VSAM exploitation of FlashCopy and IXFP/SnapShot1, and VSE/POWER PNET over TCP/IP.

For customers with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 installed, VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 allows use of the Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) option.

Description

Added Interoperability Options with e-business Connectors

The objective of these connectors is easy access to VSE resources. For example, a Java programmer writing portions of a new WebSphere-based e-business application in a Linux or Windows NT™ environment is able to access VSE/VSAM data or the VSE/POWER queue, if needed. Yet no detailed knowledge of VSE itself is required.

VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 e-business connectors are designed for a 3-tier logical model. For example, in a 3-tier environment the user interface might be a standard Web browser (tier 1). Requests from the browser are handled by a Web application server (tier 2). The target Web application server is IBM's WebSphere Application Server, or equivalent. WebSphere runs on a variety of server platforms such as Linux (including Linux for S/390) Windows 2000/NT, AIX, OS/390, and others. When necessary, the Web application server may request data or services from a VSE system (tier 3). The Web application server integrates local and VSE content into a response that is then returned to the browser.

The 3-tier logical model lets you build state-of-the-art, world-class, e-business applications that fully exploit the advanced functions, standards, and tools that are part of the WebSphere family, while still protecting your sizable investment in VSE skills and information assets. By leveraging VSE applications and data, you can deploy both tactical and strategic e-business applications at a lower cost, with less risk, and a quicker time-to-market than alternatives requiring conversion or complete replacement of core VSE applications.

The recent introduction of Linux for S/390 gives you a 2-tier physical alternative with all the advantages of the 3-tier logical model. That is, you will soon be able to implement WebSphere Application Server under Linux for S/390 in a virtual machine (or LPAR) and share the physical S/390 server running VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5. The application model is exactly the same as if you had chosen, for example, to implement WebSphere Application Server under Windows NT, or Linux on a Netfinity®, or under AIX on an RS/6000®.

VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 provides two basic types of e-business connectors.

Connectors Based on New VSE External Services: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 includes connectors that provide access to VSE/VSAM files, VSE/POWER, VSE/ICCF, VSE Librarian, and VSE consoles. These connectors have two components: the first is a set of services that run in a VSE partition (connector server); the second is a portfolio of Java-based services that runs in the Web application server environment (connector client). TCP/IP is the connection between VSE and the Web application server.

Connectors Based on a DB2 Infrastructure: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 also includes connectors that provide access to VSE/VSAM and DL/I files. Like those described above, these connectors consist of two parts. The first is a set of VSE services based on DB2 stored procedures. The second is a portfolio of client services similar to the first group of connectors, but based on JDBC/ODBC standards. These connectors use DB2 Distributed Relational Database Architecture (DRDA).

Note: VSE connectors provide a basic, record-level API to VSE/VSAM and DL/I. Some Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) offer products with more capability. For example, proven ISV products are available with a rich set of application functions including a SQL language API from the client (tier 2) system, powerful mapping services, and support for some non-IBM databases. If you need access to VSE data from another platform, you should consider these products. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 e-business connectors are complementary and aren't intended to be a replacement or alternative for ISV products that address a more fully featured portion of the connector spectrum.

Enhancements to MQSeries for VSE/ESA

In addition to the VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 e-business connectors described above, complementary IBM middleware such as MQSeries, CICS Transaction Gateway, and DB2 Connect® provide powerful interoperability capabilities as well. You can use these capabilities to implement new state-of-the-art, world-class solutions based on IBM's Application Framework for e-business.

Enhancements to MQSeries for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 add security options based on the RACROUTE standards. Customers can use these security functions to protect, for example, connections and queues. MQSeries has also added support for Java clients, automatic code page conversion, an expanded batch interface, plus other enhancements.

For more information on MQSeries for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 1 Modification 1, refer to Software Announcement 200-291 , dated September 5, 2000.

CICS e-business Support and Web Access to 3270 Applications

While many functions in VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 support the 3-tier e-business model, a 2-tier model may enable timely, cost-effective e-business solutions that exploit the robust CICS environment. CICS Web Support (formerly known as CICS Web Interface) is a set of services that enables direct access to CICS applications and transactions from Web browsers, or Network Computers over TCP/IP without the need for an intermediate system running a Web server or gateway. New APIs are provided for the development of new Web aware applications, and the ability is provided to enable Web access to existing CICS transactions and applications. The 3270 Bridge provides the ability to run existing 3270-based transactions without a 3270 terminal and without changing the associated applications.

These enhancements to CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA bring additional OS/390 functionality to VSE/ESA and expand the affinity between VSE and OS/390.

For more information on CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA, CICS Web Support, and 3270 Bridge, refer to Software Announcement 200-293 , dated September 5, 2000.

A New Version of DB2

Enhancements to DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1 include new connectivity and functionality. DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1 now supports DRDA over a TCP/IP connection in addition to SNA. That's important to customers who want to use DB2 for new e-business and business intelligence applications. On the client side, DB2 Connect is needed by those customers needing remote access to DB2 databases, or to VSE/VSAM files and DL/I databases using VSE e-business connectors.

Packaging and installability of DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1 are improved by delivering it as a key-enabled component of the VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 base. The process is similar to the existing process for TCP/IP for VSE/ESA. First time DB2 users can take advantage of a special 90-day trial period to evaluate the product.

For more information on DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1, refer to Software Announcement 200-292 , dated September 5, 2000.

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 is a replacement of TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3. The TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 Application Pak, or equivalent, is a prerequisite for these new VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 capabilities:

  • e-business connectors
  • CICS Web Support
  • DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1 DRDA over TCP/IP
  • VSE/POWER PNET

TCP/IP for VSE (licensed from Connectivity Systems, Inc.) is a native implementation of TCP/IP for VSE/ESA. It is a proven component, used by VSE/ESA installations worldwide.

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 provides a standard group of commonly used applications that deliver immediate benefits. These applications include an FTP client, FTP Daemon, Telnet client, TN3270 daemon, Line Printer Client, Line Printer Daemon, and a basic Web server. TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 also offers a General Print Server (GPS) and Network Files System Server (NFS) as optional priced features.

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 also provides a rich set of application programming interfaces allowing TCP and UDP applications to be written for (or ported to) the VSE platform. Applications can be written in S/390 High Level Assembler, COBOL, PL/I, C, or REXX. Applications that were written for OS/390, for example, using the Language Environment® (LE) C interface, or the EZA interfaces can be ported as well.

Since the first availability of TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3 (5686-A04) in December 1997, the product has been enhanced with the following:

  • Full 31-bit support
  • DBCS enablement and Euro support
  • REXX Socket API support
  • Additional hardware support (for example, OSA2, IBM 2216, and S/390 hardware checksum instruction)
  • Performance improvements
  • Enhanced quality and diagnostics
  • Improved documentation
  • Priced features: Network File System (NFS) and General Print Server (GPS)
  • More utilization by related IBM products (for example, DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1 and VSE/POWER PNET now join MQSeries, PSF/VSE, and VisualAge® Generator in exploiting TCP/IP) as well as products from Independent Software Vendors (ISVs)

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 is also available as a PTF for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 3 and VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4, but without VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 functions such as connectors, CICS Web Support, EZA interfaces, and VSE/POWER PNET over TCP/IP.

Improved Connectivity With More TCP/IP Affinity to OS/390: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 will provide two new TCP/IP APIs. The first is a call interface (CALL EZASOKET) for HLASM, COBOL for VSE, and PL/I for VSE. The second is a macro interface (EZASMI) for HLASM programs. These APIs are available for both batch and CICS transaction server programs and are widely compatible with corresponding OS/390 interfaces.

In addition, VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 will provide support for CICS TCP/IP "Listeners". A listener is a long running CICS transaction. It issues appropriate TCP/IP calls to a specified port and waits for incoming requests from clients to connect to a CICS server application. When a request arrives, the listener gives the socket communication over to the server application and waits for the next incoming request. A sample listener transaction is provided.

User Requirements

More than 10 Dynamic Classes: Up to 23 dynamic classes per table may be specified. This item is in response to several requests, including requirements from the World Alliance of VSE and VM (WAVV) user group. The anticipated benefit is improved flexibility and ease-of-operation.

VSAM LSR Buffer Hashing: Large VSAM LSR buffer pools can improve response time and reduce I/O. However, until now searching through larger buffer pools required an increased amount of CPU time. A new VSAM hashing algorithm allows direct access to the buffer needed. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 customers can now exploit very large buffer pools, and, thus, large processor real storage, without long buffer searches.

Support of Enterprise Storage Server (ESS) FlashCopy: VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 provides support for the FlashCopy function of ESS for fast duplication of disk volumes. It improves online availability by virtually eliminating the need to stop applications for extended periods of time to create backups. FlashCopy support is added to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 at no additional cost.

VSAM Exploitation of FlashCopy and IXFP/SnapShot: A new SNAP function is added to IDCAMS that exploits fast duplication of selected disk volumes. Enhancements to VSE/VSAM Backup/Restore will allow customers to backup selected VSAM data sets from volumes that have been duplicated (using FlashCopy support with ESS, or the IXFP/SnapShot feature with RAMAC® Virtual Array). Benefits include improved availability and operations resulting from the ability to concurrently archive VSAM files while the production system remains online.

VSE/POWER PNET Exploitation of TCP/IP: VSE/POWER extends existing PNET BSC/SNA/CTCA-based networking to TCP/IP. This allows exchange of jobs using Network Job Entry (NJE) protocol (for example, between VSE/POWER V6.5 and RSCS V3.2, or later), print output, messages, and commands using TCP/IP.

Other Changes from VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4

The following functions will not be delivered in VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5. Elimination of these functions will help maintain VSE/ESA ease-of-use and quality of support.

  • LANRES/VSE

A document describing alternatives to LANRES/VSE function is available on the VSE/ESA Web site at:

  • Distributed Workstation Feature
  • VisualLift® Run-Time Environment (RTE) and VisualLift
  • OCR/MICR support

The OCR/MICR support in question consists of various remnants of support for optical readers such as an IBM 1287, as well as magnetic readers such as an IBM 1255 and 1419. These devices have not been supported by VSE for some time. Yet some of the code involved in the support of these devices remained. The objective of the change is simply to improve product quality and serviceability.

The change isn't likely to effect any current VSE user. The IBM 3890™ Document Processor and IBM DOSCHECK Electronic Payment System are widely used by VSE customers in the banking industry. Support for IBM 3890 and DOSCHECK are not affected directly by this announcement.

Note: While it is anticipated that the changes within VSE itself will have no impact, some products such as DOSCHECK use BTAM/ES. BTAM was withdrawn from marketing June 30, 2000, and will be withdrawn from service on March 31, 2002. Customers with DOSCHECK, or with any other product, or application that requires BTAM, should carefully examine their options.

  • Support for the unattended node environment.
  • TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Base Pak will no longer be available with VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5.

Year 2000

This product is Year 2000 ready. When used in accordance with its associated documentation, it is capable of correctly processing, providing, and/or receiving date data within and between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, provided that all products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) used with the product properly exchange accurate date data with it.

Euro Currency

This program is EuroReady.

For more information on the implications of the euro, visit the IBM euro Web site at:

EuroReady Products

IBM considers an IBM product to be EuroReady if the product, when used in accordance with its associated documentation, is capable of correctly processing monetary data in the euro denomination and of respecting the euro currency formatting conventions (including the euro sign). This assumes that all other products (for example, hardware, software, and firmware) that are used with this product are also EuroReady. IBM hardware products that are EuroReady may or may not have an engraved euro sign key on their keyboards.

Currently, EuroReady status applies primarily to IBM products specific to the EMU countries. Products that are not specific to these countries are deemed to be "not ready" for euro unless otherwise stated in the product's country-specific specifications.

IBM Hardware Ready

IBM supplies certain IBM products which include third party software (pre-loaded or not) and/or third party attached hardware. In these instances IBM is not in a position to assert that these third party products are, in themselves, EuroReady.

Therefore, such IBM products will be designated as Hardware ready.

EuroReady Solutions

IBM considers a solution to be EuroReady when the solution providers have:

  • Analyzed the euro requirements, including the need to comply with relevant EC rules
  • Built in appropriate function

and can clearly demonstrate this by:

  • Detailing euro related requirements
  • Describing how these will be implemented in the solution
  • Declaring when the implementation will be generally available

The euro capabilities of a EuroReady solution will be clearly identified as features of the Solution specification as described in the contracts document.

Technical Information

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements

VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 provides native support for ESA/390™ processors only and does not support ESA/370, or 370-mode processors.

Specifically, the following processors are supported:

  • S/390® Integrated Server
  • S/390 Multiprise® 2000 Server
  • S/390 Multiprise 3000 Server
  • S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server™ — G3, G4, G5, and G6
  • S/390 Parallel Enterprise Server 9672 R1, R2, and R3 Models
  • PC Server 500 System/390®, or PC Server 330 System/390, or the RS/6000® with S/390 Server-on-Board feature

All Multiprocessor models are supported natively. VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 can exploit up to 3-way processors, in some environments up to 4-way processors, and tolerates up to 10-way processors.

ESA/390-capable models of the ES/9000® processors are also supported by VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5.

Minimum Configuration

The minimum configuration for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 requires a supported ESA/390 processor with the following features:

  • 16 MB available processor storage.
  • Two disk volumes of the same type together offering at least 916 MB (that includes a page data set of 150 MB VSIZE).
  • One magnetic tape or cartridge unit.
  • One line printer or local terminal printer with a speed of at least 300 lines per minute.
  • At least one display unit with a 24 x 80 character screen, at least 10 Programmable Function (PF) keys, and the capability to handle 3270 datastream.
  • A non-SNA connected system console. For S/390 or ES/9000 processors, this can be the integrated console.

Depending on the customer environment and the products used, the above values may not be sufficient for productive use of the system.

Magnetic tape processing capabilities for customer tapes in the IBM support centers could be limited to a subset of the available tape media types.

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA also supports Virtual Channel-to-Channel adapters as provided by the VM/ESA® operating system.

  • IBM 2216 Nways® Multiaccess Connector.

Software Requirements

VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 is supported native, under PR/SM™ LPAR, or running as a guest under VM/ESA. It runs on the VM/ESA Version 2 Release 2.0, or later. In this case, all processors are supported that are supported by the VM/ESA release used.

VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 is supported in the VM modes:

          V=V     Virtual Guest
          V=R     Real mode (Preferred Guest)
V=F Fixed mode (Multiple Preferred Guest)

VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 is also supported without page data set (NOPDS option).

The VSE/ESA e-business connectors, CICS Web Support, and DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1 (DRDA® support via TCP/IP) require the TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 Application Pak.

Compatibility: Compatibility aspects are the same as described in Software Announcement 298-372 , dated September 29, 1998, for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4.

Limitations

Limitations are the same as described in Software Announcement 298-372 , dated September 29, 1998, for VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4 with the following change:

  • There is a Fast Service Upgrade (FSU) path from VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4.

Performance Considerations

General

The overall performance of VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 depends on the individual hardware and software components and on the specific environment and setup parameters.

Resource Consumption

In general, the overall CPU requirement of VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 is similar to VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4. This applies as long as the same environment is used, (Batch or CICS/VSE Version 2 Release 3, or CICS Transaction Server for VSE/ESA Release 1) without exploitation of new functions, for example, VSAM LSR hashing.

Customer Responsibilities

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4: Each feature of TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 requires a unique user access key. The license order for TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 can be placed either together with any other program with the VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 product set or alone at a later point in time.

The user access key will always be generated and delivered automatically from IBM accordingly whenever an order is placed for one of these features.

Customers who do not wish to use TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 from IBM are requested to run product delete jobs (that are provided with the VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 system) after system installation, to delete the product from their system.

Important Note: Customers who have Connectivity Systems' TCP/IP for VSE installed on their VSE system should read TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Program Setup and Supplementary Information (SC33-6601), for important configuration instructions, and should note that the product access keys from IBM and Connectivity Systems are not interchangeable.

DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1: DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1 uses an access/usage protection method that requires a password key to enable the software function.

The password key will always be generated and delivered automatically from IBM accordingly whenever an order is placed for DB2 Server for VSE Version 7 Release 1.

Software Key Management: In exceptional cases (off-line situations), it may be necessary to contact the IBM Registration Center by telephone, fax, OV/VM, mail or e-mail, as appropriate. Note, the IBM Registration Center cannot handle product/license orders. You may contact them only if you already have a license for your software program.

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA and LE for VSE/ESA: TCP/IP for VSE/ESA and LE for VSE/ESA will be shipped on the VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 base tape/cartridges. Users who only need Language Run-Time Support (RTS), that is part of LE for VSE/ESA, can customize their system according to this need.

TCP/IP for VSE/ESA will be shipped enabled for demo mode only. This allows you to test the entire function set on your VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 system in a functionally limited way (not suited for any production purposes). The different features must be enabled via user access keys.

The TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 documentation is available on the VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 CD-ROM (SK2T-0060) or from the Internet.

Note: This new release of TCP/IP for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 4 is also available as PTF on VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 3 and VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 4, however, all VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 enhancements are available with this new release of TCP/IP.

CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0: CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 is always shipped with your VSE/ESA Version 2 Release 5 SIPO order. It is key protected and requires a unique user access key.

CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 requires CA90s Services for VSE (CA90s) Version 1 Release 4 (or later) as a prerequisite.

Note: CA90s has been renamed to CA-CIS.

CAI Inc. has renamed "CA90s Services for VSE" to "CA Common Infrastructure Services for VSE" (CA-CIS). This name change does not either affect the contents, or version/release, or the described handling of the deliverable.

In the following, read "CA90s" as "CA-CIS".

CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 can run in demo mode without user access keys, but still requires CA90s. "Demo mode" means all functions in CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 can be used, however, resources are not protected. If a security violation occurs, it will be reported with a console message only.

Customers who already have CA90s installed on their system, need to check the required level for use with CA-Top Secret for VSE/ESA, Version 1 Release 3 Modification 0 by contacting CAI Inc., as described below. Customers who do not have CA90s installed on their system, must order it from CAI Inc.

To order from CAI Inc., visit the following Web site:

The customer will be registered and licensed for CA90s by CAI Inc. who will also provide services for CA90s. CA90s is a Computer Associates International, Inc. product, not an IBM product. IBM does not assume any responsibility for CA90s either expressed nor implied.

CA90s is free of charge.

For further information, refer to Software Announcement 298-350 , dated September 29, 1998. This information, and the order page for CA90 Services, can also be reached via links on the VSE home page:
