Overview

Built with IBM Spectrum Virtualize™ 7.6 software, the IBM Storwize Family, including IBM Storwize V3500, V3700, V5000, and V7000, empowers organizations to achieve better data economics by supporting new workloads that are critical to their success. Storwize Family systems can handle the massive volumes of data from mobile and social applications, enable rapid and flexible cloud services deployments, and deliver the performance and scalability needed to gain insights from the latest analytics technologies. Combined with Lenovo® servers, IBM Spectrum Virtualize 7.6 integrated Storwize allows customers to reduce the complexity and cost of managing storage by:

Overview

IBM TS4500 delivers enhanced capabilities for supporting intermix of LTO and 3592 drives and scalability up to 18 frames in a single tape library (for single accessor configurations).

In addition, TS4500 now supports storage frame conversions for redeployment of S24 and S54 frames from TS3500 to TS4500, introducing a new TS4500 control upgrade feature code to allow S24 or S54 frames to be converted to a TS4500 control system in the field.

IBM TS1070 Model F7C is designed to be installed in an IBM TS4500 Tape Library to deliver high capacity and performance for the midrange open systems environment. These models incorporate the new LTO IBM Ultrium 7 Tape Drive with enhanced maximum tape drive throughput over the IBM LTO generation 6 tape drive (Ultrium 6). It has a native data transfer of up to 300 MB/sec.

The TS1070 Tape Drive supports the LTO Generation 7 media specification of over double the compressed capacity of up to 15 TB with 2.5 to 1 compression (up to 6 TB native capacity) as compared to previous LTO 6 compressed capacity of up to 6.25 TB with 2.5:1 compression (up to 2.5 TB native capacity) per tape cartridge. IBM Ultrium 7 Tape Drives can read and write LTO Ultrium 6 and read LTO Ultrium 5 Data Cartridges. The TS1070 has an 8 Gbps Fibre Channel dual-ported interface for connection to a wide spectrum of open system servers.

IBM Ultrium 7 enhancements that help improve performance and reliability include:

  • Native data transfer rate up to 300 MB/sec
  • LTO Generation 7 media specification tape cartridge compressed capacity of up to 15 TB (up to 6 TB native)
  • 8 Gbps Fibre Channel dual-ported drive attachment
  • A 1 GB internal buffer
  • Support for media partitioning and self describing tape with IBM Spectrum Archive™ Enterprise Edition
  • LTO Ultrium 7 encryption support

Key prerequisites

Appropriate levels of host and drive software are required to attach TS1070 Model F7C to a wide range of environments, including select IBM Power Systems™, IBM System p, IBM z Systems™ (zLinux), other servers running Linux™ and Microsoft Windows™ operating system environments that support Fibre Channel interfaces.

Prerequisites for using encryption

Certain hardware and software prerequisites must be met before using encryption with TS4500 tape libraries.

With TS4500 tape libraries, encryption is managed at the logical library level. All encryption-enabled drives that are assigned to a logical library use the same method of encryption. The rules for setting up encryption differ based on whether the library is installed with 3592 or LTO tape drives, and whether you use Library-Managed Encryption (LME) or Application-Managed Encryption (AME). If the library contains 3592 tape drives, the following prerequisites apply:

  • IBM Security Key Lifecycle Manager (formerly Tivoli® Key Lifecycle Manager) must be attached to the TS4500 and configured for LME
  • Tape drives must be enabled for encryption from the Logical Libraries page of the TS4500 management GUI

If the library contains LTO tape drives, the following prerequisites apply:

  • Tape drives must be enabled for encryption from the Logical Libraries page of the TS4500 management GUI
  • Feature code 1604, Transparent LTO Encryption, is required for LTO tape drives if using LME
  • IBM Security Key Lifecycle Manager is required as the key manager when using LME with LTO

Overview

The IBM TS2270 Tape Drive (machine type 3580 model H7S) is the newest external, stand-alone or rack mountable unit, designed to offer high capacity and performance for the midrange systems environment. The TS2270 incorporates the IBM Linear Tape-Open (LTO) Ultrium 7 Half-High SAS Tape Drive and is designed to support LTO Generation 7 media specification native data rate performance of up to 300 MB/sec compared to the IBM TS2260 LTO Half-High tape drive (Ultrium 6) of up to 160 MB/sec native data transfer rate. The TS2270 tape drive supports the LTO Generation 7 specifications for LTO tape drive technology, and LTO Generation 7 media to a compressed capacity of up to 15 TB with 2.5 to 1 compression (up to 6 TB native capacity) compared to previous LTO 6 compressed capacity of up to 6.25 TB with 2.5:1 compression (up to 2.5 TB native capacity) per tape cartridge. The TS2270 can read and write to Ultrium 7 and Ultrium 6 cartridges, and is read compatible with Ultrium 5 data cartridges. The Ultrium 7 tape drive is encryption-capable and designed to support application-managed encryption.

The TS2270 tape drive uses a 6 Gbps dual-port SAS interface for connection to a wide spectrum of system servers, including select IBM Power Systems models, IBM PureFlex™ systems, and IBM BladeCenters. The TS2270 also supports Microsoft Windows and UNIX™ operating systems.

The following IBM TS2270 Half-High LTO Ultrium 7 tape drive enhancements are designed to help improve performance, capacity, and reliability:

  • Native LTO Generation 7 media specification data transfer rate of up to 300 MB/sec
  • LTO Generation 7 media specification tape cartridge native capacity support of 6 TB and compressed capacity of up to 15 TB with 2.5 to 1 compression
  • 6 Gbps SAS attachment support
  • A 1 GB internal buffer
  • Application-managed encryption support for half-high LTO Generation 7 SAS tape drive
  • 16 KB cartridge memory with Ultrium 7 media
  • Half-high drive form factor

The enclosure width enables two TS2270 storage units to be mounted side by side in a 19-inch IBM server rack mount shelf kit, requiring 2U of rack space.

The TS2270 tape drive provides an excellent migration path from digital linear tape (DLT or SDLT), 1/4 in (QIC), 4 mm (DAT), 8 mm, or older LTO generation tape drives.

Other media forms like disk have never really replaced tape in most data centers. Instead, tape has continued to be number one for storage archival, and thanks to continued improvement in tape technology, tape is taking a more prominent role in a data center for both backup and archive. LTO tape is high capacity and performance, very reliable, and still the lowest priced save/restore solution on the market today.

IBM 7226 Model 1U3 offers new Half-high LTO Ultrium 7 tape drive features to simplify data transfer options with increased storage and compatability

IBM Storage offers the new Half-high Linear Tape-Open 7 (LTO7) higher capacity tape drive features to the list of LTO tape, RDX, and DVD storage options. The Half-high LTO7 tape drive features offer over twice the capacity of the Half-high LTO6 tape drives currently available on the IBM 7226 Model 1U3 Multi-Media Enclosure.

The 7226 attaches to IBM POWER6®, POWER7®, and POWER8® servers, IBM PureFlex systems, IBM BladeCenter models, and to Linux and Windows OEM systems.

Overview

IBM 7226 Model 1U3 Multi-Media Enclosure delivers external tape, removable disk drive, and DVD-RAM drive options that enable data transfer within storage and retrieval technologies installed in computer hardware facilities. The 7226 offers an expansive list of drive feature options.

The IBM 7226 Enclosure can accommodate up to two tape drives, two RDX removable disk drive docking stations, or up to four DVD-RAM drives.

Model 1U3 attaches to specific IBM POWER6, IBM POWER7, IBM POWER8, IBM PureFlex systems, IBM POWER®, BladeCenters, and to Linux and Windows OEM systems.

The following features are included on the 7226:

  • Half-high LTO5 (HHLTO5), Half-high LTO6 (HHLTO6), and HHLTO7 tape drives, Serial Attach SCSI (SAS) half-high tape drives, and DVD-RAM SATA/SAS features in the IBM 7226 may attach individually to an external SAS host bus adapter (HBA) on a POWER server or IBM BladeCenter.
  • HHLTO5, HHLTO6, and HHLTO7 Fibre Channel (FC) Tape Drive features attach to select IBM POWER7 and POWER8 systems and to IBM PureFlex Blade servers through an external FC HBA POWER6, POWER7 and POWER8 system.
  • USB RDX3 removable disk drives, including the new 2.0 TB RDX, in the 7226 may attach to an internal USB port on IBM POWER6, POWER7, POWER8, and IBM PureFlex systems, or on IBM BladeCenters.
  • DVD-RAM devices in the 7226 may attach to IBM POWER6, POWER7, and POWER8 systems.
  • SAS, FC, and USB device features in the 7226 storage enclosure are supported on AIX®, IBMi, and Linux operation systems.

The 7226 is designed to deliver simplified data transfer options between systems with similar tape, RDX, and DVD-RAM drive archival storage and retrieval technologies.

Key prerequisites

Mandatory software

IBM 7226 Multi-Media Enclosure is compatible with most IBM POWER6, POWER7, and POWER8 systems, as well as IBM BladeCenter models (PS700, PS701, PS702, PS703, and PS704), and IBM PureFlex systems that offer current level AIX, IBMi, and LINUX operating systems.

System support of IBM 7226 features

IBM POWER Systems support all SAS, USB, and FC tape drives, DVD-RAM, and RDX Removable drive features on the 7226.

IBM BladeCenters support DAT160, HHLTO5, HHLTO6, and HHLTO7 SAS tape drive features, and also support attachment of RDX Removable drive features on the 7226. BladeCenters do not support DVD-RAM device or LTO FC tape drive attachment.

IBM PureFlex systems support attachment of HHLTO5, HHLTO6, and HHLTO7 FC tape drive features, DVD-RAM USB drive features, and RDX Removable drive features. PureFlex systems do not support SAS tape drives and DVD-RAM devices.

IBM TS3100 Tape Library Model L2U (machine type 3573) and IBM TS3200 Tape Library Model L4U (machine type 3573) now incorporate the new LTO Ultrium 7 full-high Gb Fibre Channel, half-high 6 Gb SAS, and half-high 8 Gb Fibre Channel tape drives, enhancing tape performance over the previous generation of IBM LTO Ultrium 6 tape drives with a native data transfer rate of up to 300 MB/sec.

Mixed LTO Ultrium generations and attachment tape drive types are supported where drive space is available. Ultrium 7 SAS and Fibre Channel tape drives are encryption capable.

The TS3100 and TS3200 Tape Libraries incorporate IBM Multi-Path Architecture with logical libraries equal to the number of drives installed. Ultrium 7 tape drives for the TS3100 and TS3200 Tape Libraries are only available as feature numbers.

LTO Ultrium 7 tape drives support the LTO Generation 7 media specification of more than double the compressed capacity of up to 15 TB with 2.5 to 1 compression (up to 6 TB native capacity) compared to previous LTO 6 compressed capacity of up to 6.25 TB with 2.5:1 compression (up to 2.5 TB native capacity) per tape cartridge. The TS3200 comes standard with four removable cartridge magazines, providing 48 data cartridge slots, including a three-slot I/O station. Optional features available include a rack mount kit, an additional power supply, additional removable cartridge magazines, transparent LTO encryption, path failover, additional drives, attachment cables, interposers, and power cords. A remote management unit and a barcode reader are standard in the library, enabling it to run in sequential or random access mode.

Overview

The IBM TS3310 Tape Library consists of IBM TS3310 Tape Library Model L5B (3576 Model L5B) and IBM TS3310 Tape Library Model E9U (3576 Model E9U).

The TS3310 Tape Library now incorporates the new IBM LTO Ultrium 7 full-high, 8 Gbps, dual-port Fibre Channel tape drives (feature number 8442) to enhance drive performance over the previous generation IBM LTO Ultrium 6 Tape Drives with a native data transfer rate of up to 300 MB/sec. Mixed Ultrium generations and attachment tape drive types are supported where drive space is available.

IBM Ultrium 7 Fibre Channel tape drives are encryption capable. The TS3310 Tape Library incorporates IBM Multi-Path Architecture with logical libraries equal to the number of drives installed.

The TS3310 Tape Library supports the LTO Generation 7 media specification of more than double the compressed capacity of up to 15 TB with 2.5 to 1 compression (up to 6 TB native capacity) compared to previous LTO 6 compressed capacity of up to 6.25 TB with 2.5:1 compression (up to 2.5 TB native capacity) per tape cartridge. IBM Ultrium 7 Tape Drives can read and write LTO Ultrium 7 and 6 Data Cartridges, and can read LTO Ultrium 5 Data Cartridges.

IBM Ultrium 7 enhancements that help improve performance and reliability include:

  • LTO Generation 7 media specification native data transfer rate of up to 300 MB/sec
  • Support for LTO Generation 7 media specification tape cartridge compressed capacity of up to 15 TB with 2.5 to 1 compression per cartridge
  • A 1 GB internal buffer
  • Support for media partitioning and self-describing tape

A dual-stage 32-channel head actuator is designed to provide precision head alignment to help support higher track density and improved data integrity. Track following skew actuator supports flangeless tape guide rollers and dynamic skew to enable the head to follow skew tape motion and improve linear actuation.

The Ultrium 7 Tape Drive uses Statistical Analysis and Reporting System (SARS) to help isolate failures between media and hardware. SARS uses the cartridge performance history saved in the Cartridge Memory module and the drive performance history kept in the drive flash to help.

Also new to the TS3310 Tape Library, the IBM TSR enables administrators to gather usage statistics for multiple TS4500 and TS3310 libraries using a centralized, Java-based server application. Administrators can generate custom reports on the health and utilization of tape cartridges, tape drives, and tape libraries by querying the TSR database directly or using the optional Windows-based client.

An additional enhancement for the TS3310 Tape Library reduces the time required to obtain logs and update drive firmware for LTO Ultrium 5 and newer tape drives. With the web interface, users can transfer drive logs and drive firmware at very high speeds over an internal Ethernet interface. For tape drives in the base module TS3310 Model L5B, library-to-drive Ethernet cables feature (#6001) is required. For tape drives in the expansion module TS3310 Model E9U, an Ethernet Expansion Blade feature (#3470) is required.

Also, the IBM TS3310 CLI program can be used to access the TS3310 library from a CLI. This is in addition to the TS3310 web user interface.

The IBM TS3310 Tape Library is extremely modular with physical scalability varying from the 5U Model L5B base library to four additional Model E9U expansion units. This automated tape library is designed to deliver:

  • Space-efficient design with a modular, stackable Model E9U Expansion Frame option providing growth, scalability, and flexibility
  • IBM LTO Ultrium 7 Fibre Channel dual-port tape drive support and integration
  • Support for LTO Ultrium 7 data and WORM tape cartridges
  • Support for three encryption management methods:
    • Application managed, system managed, and library managed
    • System managed and library managed encryption are available through the Transparent LTO Encryption feature
  • Support for media partitioning and self-describing tape
  • Support for mixed generations of Ultrium tape drives and media
  • Path failover, optional for both control paths and data paths
  • Capacity on Demand growth options for its expansion modules
  • Stand-alone library (up to 14U) or optional rack mounting in an industry-standard 19-inch rack

IBM TS3310 Tape Library Model L5B is a 5U base library unit which contains the library control module, fixed tape cartridge storage of 35 slots, a configurable I/O station with six slots, a touchscreen display, cartridge handling robotics, and up to two LTO Ultrium 7, Ultrium 6, or Ultrium 5 Tape Drives.

IBM TS3310 Tape Library Model E9U is an optional 9U expansion module. Each E9U expansion module can accommodate up to four LTO Ultrium 7, Ultrium 6, or Ultrium 5 Tape Drives, additional storage slots, and a configurable I/O station of twelve slots. Up to four TS3310 E9U tape expansion modules can be added to the TS3310 Model L5B Tape Library, either at the time of purchase or as a follow-on upgrade to fill a full 41U rack. For configurations of 23U and above, the TS3310 Tape Library and expansion modules must be installed in a rack. Rack doors are required for any library that has more than 14 drives installed.

Overview

IBM Spectrum Virtualize software delivers a powerful solution for storage efficiency in environments where IBM is the primary storage. When used in combination with SVC, Storwize V7000 (Unified), Storwize V5000, Storwize V3700, and Storwize V3500, IBM Spectrum Virtualize provides the benefits of storage virtualization and advanced storage capabilities, including HyperSwap, Virtual Volume (VVol) support, FlashCopy, replication, Real-time Compression, Easy Tier, and Encryption.

Version 7.6 of Spectrum Virtualize includes the following new functionalities:

Encryption: For improved data security and confidentiality, encryption is now available for both internal capacities of SVC, Storwize V7000 and FlashSystems V9000 and externally virtualized capacities of Storwize V7000, SVC, and FlashSystems V9000. Encryption can be applied to virtualized storage arrays, even if the virtualized array doesn't have encryption capabilities. Encrypted volumes are transparent to applications, easing implementation and operation.

For supported externally virtualized storage configurations, data encryption can be enabled by the Storwize V7000 or SVC controllers. The data is encrypted and sent over the storage network to the virtualized storage device(s). Encryption by Spectrum Virtualize is transparent to hosts and applications, and the data is encrypted and protected across the network between the Storwize and SVC controllers and the storage device(s).

Distributed RAID: For higher availability, Distributed RAID is now available for internal capacities, offering up to 10 times faster RAID array rebuild times. As drives grow in capacity, rebuild times increase, increasing the possibility of a second drive failure and resulting in a loss of data. Distributed RAID addresses this issue by distributing the data across a higher amount of physical drives, reducing the load on each individual drive from rebuild activity. Additionally, Distributed RAID can also deliver increased performance because data can be read from/written to more drives for a given I/O. Distributed RAID volumes are transparent to applications for simplified implementation and operation.

IP quorum base support: Current Stretched Cluster (SVC) and HyperSwap (SVC, Storwize V7000 and Storwize V5000) implementations require Fibre Channel storage on a third site to cope with tie-break situations in the event of the inter-site link failing. IP quorum base support will enable the use of a lower cost IP network-attached host as quorum disk for simplified implementation and operation.

HyperSwap GUI support: Current local HyperSwap is functionally complete, but requires complex configuration through the existing command-line interface. This new release of HyperSwap offers a new command-line interface which greatly simplifies the set up process to a handful of commands, and also adds the ability to configure and manage local HyperSwap through the GUI.

VMWare VVol integration: Migration of space efficient volumes between storage containers will maintain the space efficiency of volumes and deliver resiliency for VMs in case the volumes start running out of space. Cloning a virtual machine will achieve a full independent set of virtual volumes.

Increase maximum quantity of iSCSI hosts: For more scalable iSCSI host support, version 7.6 will increase the maximum number of iSCSI host sessions from 256 to 1024 per node, offering more fanout for each SVC I/O group.

Integrated Comprestimator: Real-time Compression is a key differentiator of the Storwize Family, and the Comprestimator is its key sizing tool to estimate how much capacity savings the customer can expect. The Comprestimator can analyze the patterns of the actual customer data, and estimate the compressibility of data per volume. Currently, storage administrators have to get server administrator collaboration and authorization to install Comprestimator on servers, potentially on hundreds of servers. The integration of Comprestimator within Spectrum Virtualize code will ease the process of estimating capacity savings by having this sizing tool natively in SVC, Storwize V7000, and FlashSystems V9000, avoiding the need to install Comprestimator on hundreds of servers and enabling estimates of Real-time Compression effectiveness from a central console.

Improvement in the worldwide support processes, 24 hours a day, seven days a week: Enhanced support includes the addition of 24-hour support response to severity 2 calls, seven days a week, for SVC, V7000, V7K Unified, and V9000 customers on November 27, 2015. Software requirements

IBM SAN Volume Controller V7.6 (5641-VC7, 5641-CP7, 5725-M19, and 5725-H04) has the same software prerequisites as IBM SAN Volume Controller V7.5.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for SAN Volume Controller Encryption Software V7.6 (5641-B01 and 5725-Y35) requires PID 5641-VC7.

IBM Storwize V7000 V7.6 (5339-CB7, 5639-XB7, 5639-EB7, 5639-VM7, 5639-EV7, 5639-RM7, and 5639-CP7) has the same software prerequisites as IBM Storwize V7000 V7.5.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software V7.6 is not available for IBM Flex System® V7000. IBM Flex System V7000 V7.2 (5639-NZ7, 5639-EX7, 5639-RE7, and 5639-CM7) has the same software prerequisites as IBM Flex System V7000 V7.1.

IBM Storwize V5000 V7.6 (5639-CT7, 5639-XT7, and 5639-ET7) has the same software prerequisites as IBM Storwize V5000 V7.5.

Hardware requirements

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for SAN Volume Controller requires at least one pair of IBM System Storage SAN Volume Controller (2145-DH8) storage engines with integrated battery backup units.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for SAN Volume Controller Encryption Software V7.6 (5641-B01 and 5725-Y35) requires the Encryption Enablement Feature ACE2.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for Storwize V7000 requires at least one IBM Storwize V7000 Control Enclosure (2076-524, 2076-112, 2076-124, 2076-312, or 2076-324) for installation.

Spectrum Virtualize Software V7.6 is not available for the IBM Flex System V7000. IBM Storwize Family Software for Flex System V7000 V7.2 requires at least one IBM Flex System V7000 (4939-A49, 4939-H49, or 4939-X49) Control Enclosure for installation.

IBM Spectrum Virtualize Software for Storwize V5000 requires at least one IBM Storwize V5000 control enclosure (2077-12C, 2077-24C, 2078-12C, or 2078-24C) for installation.

IBM FlashSystem V840 Software V7.6 (5639-FS7) requires an IBM FlashSystem V840 Storage System (9846-AC1 and 9846-AE1, or 9848-AC1 and 9848-AE1) for installation.
