Overview

The x3690 X5 server features the fifth generation of the Enterprise X-Architecture®, delivering innovation with enhanced reliability and availability features to enable optimal performance for databases, enterprise applications, and virtualized environments.

This model of the x3690 X5 server includes Red Hat software, IBM MAX5 v2 memory expansion, and 256 GB of memory for a powerful, easy-to-deploy workload virtualization system. It is powered with the latest 10-core Intel Xeon™ processors. Storage options include a wide range of disk and tape drives, plus IBM eXFlash with solid-state drives for high performance.

The new IBM System x3690 X5 model with Red Hat software is a Workload Optimized Solution for Open Virtualization which includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux with the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Hypervisor (Kernel-Based Virtual Machine (KVM)).

IBM MAX5 v2 for System x is a scalable, 1U, memory expansion drawer. It delivers 32 additional DIMM slots to the x3690 X5. It has a memory controller for added performance. IBM eXFlash delivers integrated, high-speed data access at lower cost using less power than traditional storage alternatives for equivalent performance.

These models of the System x3850 X5 and x3950 X5 servers are powered with 6-core, 8-core, and 10-core Intel Xeon processors, with optional IBM MAX5 memory expansion and eXFlash storage for powerful 4-socket, highly scalable systems.

IBM MAX5 for System x is a scalable, 1U, memory expansion drawer. It delivers 32 additional DIMM slots to the x3850 X5 and x3950 X5. It has a memory controller for added performance and a node controller for x3850 scalability to two nodes with eight sockets, 192 DIMM slots, and eXA scaling. MAX5 is available as an option for most x3850 X5 and x3950 X5 models.

These new models provide preconfigured servers with MAX5, Red Hat software and the Intel Xeon E7-8870 processor.

The new IBM System x3950 X5 model with Red Hat software is a Workload Optimized Solution for Open Virtualization, which includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux with the Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization Hypervisor (Kernel-Based Virtual Machine (KVM)).

The following tools and advisors are provided:

  • Workload Statistics Advisor provides advice on missing, outdated, and conflicting statistics and suggests additional statistics that should be gathered to improve query performance for those queries within a workload.
  • Workload Statistics View Advisor analyzes workload query plans and provides advice on creating statistical views to improve query performance within a workload. Data skews across joins occur often in data warehouse implementations. Statistical views involving joins can be used by DB2 optimizer to address data skews and choose a better query plan.
  • Workload Index Advisor provides advice on new indexes that may improve performance of a workload. Workload Index Advisor uses a set of predefined scenarios to perform an analysis based on the scenario selected.
  • Access Plan Explorer provides tabular view of the query plan for quicker diagnosis of performance issues.
  • Visual Plan Hint provides the ability to change and validate the plan to form a hint and deploy the hint.
  • Text Index Candidates will explain the SQL statement and determine the indexes in the plan (existing and test indexes) along with estimated disk space and performance improvements.
  • Query Advisor makes recommendations based on best practice rules to modify SQL to improve overall performance.
