IBM MQ is a robust and secure messaging middleware offering that allows applications and system services to exchange data and files rapidly and reliably, across multiple different platforms.

For more than 20 years, IBM has led the market in messaging middleware with more than 10000 businesses across all geographies and industries that rely on IBM MQ.

IBM MQ for z/OS, V9.0 builds on the functions and capabilities that were added in earlier releases of WebSphere® MQ for z/OS. You can obtain the new and enhanced functions that are offered in IBM MQ for z/OS, V9 by migrating directly to Version 9 from WebSphere MQ for z/OS, V7.1 or IBM MQ for z/OS, V8.0 without migrating to an interim version or release.

The key enhancements of IBM MQ for z/OS, V9.0 include:

IBM MQ for z/OS, V9.0 represents the first release of a new way that IBM MQ is brought to market and supported. Previously, releases of IBM MQ deferred the addition of significant new function to major new releases of the product. Minor feature improvements were combined with defect fixes and delivered as fixes to the general availability offering. From this version of IBM MQ onwards, IBM offers a new delivery and support model that separates out the delivery of defect fixes from the delivery of any new function. Licensed clients of IBM MQ offerings can choose to consume IBM MQ through a long-term support model that contains the latest features at the time of general availability, with only defect fixes that are provided during the support cycle. An additional choice of a continuous delivery model is offered, where new function is delivered incrementally alongside defect fixes in more frequent modification-level updates. To maintain support, clients on this continuous delivery model will be required to keep their IBM MQ environment current with the continuous delivery modification-levels.

The initial delivery of IBM MQ for z/OS, V9.0 provides the basis for both the ongoing, long term support stream and also the continuous delivery stream of updates that will be added in future modification-level updates. The key features of IBM MQ for z/OS, V9.0 provide additional valuable enhancements, but also provide the basis for future enhancements as part of the continuous delivery stream of updates.

The Version 9.0 offering enhances the core IBM MQ functions that apply across all platforms. They provide the foundation for ongoing work to enhance self-service operation for IBM MQ deployments, as well as a number of key customer-driven request for enhancements (RFEs).

IBM MQ for z/OS exploits the capabilities of the IBM z Systems platform to deliver a messaging powerhouse. IBM MQ for z/OS shared queues provides the most reliable, highly available access to messages.

The key enhancements of IBM MQ for z/OS, V9.0 include:

  • Increased number of active logs that are available to be defined to a single Queue Manager from 31 to 310. This increases the availability of a queue manager in failure scenarios.
  • Standards-based messaging support for applications that run within the CICS OSGI Server (CICS Transaction Server V5.2 or later) environment through use of IBM MQ classes for JMS.
  • Standards-based messaging support within IMS (IMS V13 or later) environment through use of IBM MQ classes for JMS. The MQ classes for JMS use the MQ-IMS adapter which builds on IMS External Subsystem Attach Facility (ESAF).
  • New pageset usage information within existing Queue Manager SMF records to facilitate better management of local queues within a queue manager by recording information such as pageset input-output rates and highest usage.
  • Provision of an override capability for message expiry within a queue manager. This capability is available for point-to-point messaging or publish and subscribe.
  • New sample program for examining channel partner-client information from an auditing and control perspective. The sample uses new information that is made available to channel exits, which indicate the level and type of channel partner.
  • New z/OS Management Facility (z/OSMF) workflows and templates that enable simplified queue manager and queue manger resource provisioning.
  • Improved Unicode support, specifically to provide full UTF-16 support.

Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act

IBM MQ for z/OS, V9.0 is capable, as of June 17, 2016, when used in accordance with associated IBM documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it.

Most other messaging solutions are either not scalable, not as secure, or are very simplified and cannot be used to the same extent as IBM MQ.

  • The core of application integration, delivers the reliable and proven messaging backbone for service-oriented architecture (SOA) connectivity, as the universal, multipurpose data transport. It connects many commercial IT systems, with support for more than 80 platform configurations.
    • Supports industry-standard JMS 2.0 messaging and offers a choice of APIs.
    • Interoperates with the JMS messaging services which enables Java™ EE environments to bridge to other environments.
    • Delivers a flexible connectivity solution that can grow incrementally with changing business needs.
  • IBM MQ for z/OS exploits the capabilities of the IBM z Systems platform to deliver a messaging powerhouse.
  • IBM WebSphere MQ for HP OpenVMS, WebSphere MQ for HP NonStop Server, and WebSphere MQ for z/VSE® all extend the reach of IBM MQ to these specific computing platforms.
  • IBM MQ Advanced Message Security expands the industry-standard security that is supplied by IBM MQ with end-to-end data protection for applications. It enables enterprise-wide, remote management of security policies on an MQ network and can be deployed to existing production environments without changes to existing IBM MQ applications. This capability is integrated into IBM MQ V8 on all supported platforms but is separately licensed for definition and use of policies. Licensing is included in IBM MQ Advanced.
  • IBM MQ Managed File Transfer Service and IBM MQ Managed File Transfer Agents leverage both existing messaging infrastructures to provide reliable, secure managed file transfer between systems without major recoding of applications that produce and consume files instead of messages. Licensing for IBM MQ Managed File Transfer is subject to entitlement in addition to IBM MQ entitlement, but licensing for IBM MQ Managed File Transfer Service is included in IBM MQ Advanced entitlement.
  • IBM MQ Telemetry provides a lightweight client to run on physical devices, such as sensors, or mobile devices (mobile phones), which extends the reach of the IBM MQ infrastructure. Connectivity to MQTT clients or the IBM MQ Telemetry Daemon for Devices is available subject to separate entitlement. Included with entitlement to IBM MQ Advanced is entitlement to deploy IBM MQ Telemetry on all supported MQ servers in the enterprise.
  • WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging (on Linux™, Microsoft™ Windows™, and Oracle Solaris platforms) extends the IBM MQ product family with low-latency, high-throughput delivery. It is optimized for the high-volume, low-latency requirements typical of financial market firms and other industries where speed of data delivery is paramount. This is not provided with IBM MQ, but is available separately with separate entitlement. Messages can be exchanged both ways between IBM MQ and WebSphere MQ Low Latency Messaging.

IBM MQ delivers the messaging backbone that underpins and extends the IBM ESB portfolio. It supplies the transport layer that ESBs can build upon, to augment the backbone with mediation, transformation, and routing services. IBM Integration Bus adds transformation, intelligent routing, and information flow modeling to the IBM MQ messaging backbone. This ESB distributes information and data generated by business events in real time to people, applications, and devices throughout the extended enterprise and beyond.

The IBM MQ family is complemented by skills, services, and offerings from more than 800 IBM Business Partners worldwide.

z/OS Connect Extended Edition

IBM intends that a future release of IBM MQ for z/OS will provide support for both z/OS Connect and z/OS Connect Extended Edition.

MQ Light API

IBM intends to deliver features into IBM MQ for z/OS to allow applications that are developed to the IBM MQ Light API (introduced in Version 8.0.0.4 for distributed platforms) to connect directly to IBM MQ for z/OS. This option might be considered when an application requires the qualities of service provided by an enterprise messaging platform. IBM intends to make this capability available in a future update to IBM MQ for z/OS.

CICS TS and WebSphere Liberty profile

IBM intends to deliver additional Java EE 7.x components and technologies for the CICS TS hosted WebSphere Liberty profile through continuous delivery of new features in the coming months. These additional components and technologies are intended to include support for Java EE 7.x Web Profile features, support for JMS 2.x with IBM MQ for z/OS, and the ability to LINK from a CICS TS COBOL program to a CICS TS hosted Liberty application.

Customer responsibilities

Deprecation of MD5 algorithm in IBM MQ Advanced Message Security

From Version 9.0, MD5 and SHA-1 signature algorithms and RC2 and DES encryption algorithms on IBM MQ Advanced Message Security policies are disabled in default configurations. It is not possible to define new security policies that use these algorithms.

Stabilization of IBM MQ classes for Java

IBM will make no further enhancements to the IBM MQ classes for Java and they are functionally stabilized at the level shipped in IBM MQ V8.0. Existing applications that use the IBM MQ classes for Java will continue to be fully supported, but this API is stabilized, so new features will not be added and requests for enhancements rejected. Fully supported means that defects will be fixed together with any changes necessitated by changes to IBM MQ System Requirements.

IBM MQ transport for SOAP

The IBM MQ transport for SOAP is being deprecated. This includes the following product features:

  • The IBM MQ transport for SOAP Java Listener
  • The IBM MQ transport for SOAP .NET 1 and 2 Listener
  • The IBM MQ transport for SOAP Java Axis2 Client
  • The IBM MQ transport for SOAP Java client (deprecation was announced in IBM MQ V8.0)
  • The IBM MQ transport for SOAP .NET 1 and 2 clients (deprecation was announced in IBM MQ V8.0)
  • The IBM MQ bridge for HTTP (deprecation was announced in IBM MQ V8.0)

It will analyze your current installation, determine the correct product migration, and present your new configuration based on z/OS. Additional products can also be added to your order (including determination of whether all product requisites are satisfied). Shopz is available in the US, Canada, and several countries in Europe. Subsequent updates (technical newsletters or revisions between releases) to the publications shipped with the product will be distributed to the user of record for as long as a license for this software remains in effect. A separate publication order or subscription is not needed.

Customized Offerings

Product deliverables are shipped only through CBPDO and ServerPac. These customized offerings are offered for Internet delivery in countries where Shopz product ordering is available. Internet delivery reduces software delivery time and allows you to install software without the need to handle tapes. For more details on Internet delivery, go to the Help section on the Shopz website.

You choose the delivery method when you order the software. IBM recommends Internet delivery. In addition to Internet and DVD, the supported tape delivery options include:

  • 3590
  • 3592

Most products can be ordered in ServerPac the month following their availability in CBPDO. z/OS can be ordered through CBPDO and ServerPac at general availability. Many products will also be orderable in a Product ServerPac without also having to order the z/OS operating system or subsystem.

Shopz and CFSW will determine the eligibility based on product requisite checking. For more details on the product ServerPac, go to the Help section on the Shopz website.

Production of software product orders will begin on the planned general availability date.

Support lifecycle policy

With the IBM MQ V9.0 family of products, IBM MQ introduces a Continuous Delivery (CD) support model. Following the initial release of Version 9.0, new function and enhancements will be made available by incremental updates within the same version and release.

The new support model is implemented as follows:

  • The CD support model allows IBM MQ products to make new function available more frequently. The model also recognizes that frequent releases may not be suitable for all client application environments. Therefore, some products may offer a Long Term Support Release (LTSR) option.
  • An LTSR can be supported for a longer period time, thereby assisting clients where frequent functional updates may not be practical and a longer term deployment is desirable.
  • Clients should stay up to date with the installation of updates and LTSR packages to obtain the latest maintenance and new function. Product defect fixes and security updates are only available for the two, most current CD updates and all active LTSRs. If required, individual product fixes can be made available between update packages for resolution of problems.
  • Both new function and service will be made available in a single, easy-to-install package as modification level updates.
  • Update packages are delivered on the latest product release stream when the new release becomes available.
  • New functional updates are not available to previously released update packages and LTSRs.
  • Support is available for all IBM components of a product until the product is withdrawn from support.
  • Support extensions are available, for a minimum period of one year for an additional fee, following effective support discontinuance date of the product.

For support of IBM MQ V9.0

  • LTSR is a recommended product level for which support, including defect and security updates, will be provided over a specified period of time. LTSR is intended for clients that may need a longer term deployment and maximum stability.
  • New functionality, security updates, and defect fixes will be made available through CD releases. Additional support will be made available, as necessary, through iFixes on only the two most recent CD and LTSR. IBM expects that clients will upgrade to either the latest CDR or LTSR in order to receive on-going security updates and defect fixes.
  • IBM MQ for z/OS, V9.0 is a LTSR and provides predictable support through iFixes and fixpacks for a minimum period of five years from the general availability date. A minimum, three-year extension of support is available for an additional fee.

Electronic Service Agent™ and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to IBM Systems customers. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support, all at no additional cost to you.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX® V5.3, AIX V6.1, and AIX V7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type smitty esa_main, and select Configure Electronic Service Agent. In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. For more information and documentation on how to configure and use Electronic Service Agent, go to the IBM Electronic Support website.

The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent™ tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24 x 7 monitoring and reporting mean intervention is not required to report errors.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to securely transmit either through the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system.

More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the IBM Electronic Support page.

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, you are able to see search results that apply specifically to your systems.

Sub-capacity charges for WLC products

Sub-capacity charges for WLC products are based on product LPAR utilization capacity. Product LPAR utilization capacity for a WLC product is the highest number of MSUs utilized by the combined LPARs in which a WLC product runs concurrently during a reporting period. The number of MSUs is based on the highest observed rolling 4-hour average utilization used by the combination of the relevant LPARs during the reporting period.

Sub-capacity charges terms and conditions

z Systems™ software charges at less than full machine capacity for eligible WLC products apply when z/OS is running in z/Architecture® (64-bit) mode on an IBM z Systems server, no other MVS-based operating system is licensed to that server, and the required information is provided by the customer in accordance with the applicable terms.

Sub-capacity charges for a WLC product is based on the utilization of the LPARs where/when the product executes. To obtain charges at less than full machine capacity for WLC products, the customer is required to:

  • Sign and abide by the terms of the contract for the applicable price metric. Contract numbers are available in the z Systems Software Pricing Reference Guide.
  • Obtain the latest version of the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool.
  • Install any WLC product and IBM z Systems server Licensed Internal Code (LIC) service required for sub-capacity charging. Required service will be listed on the IBM z Systems Software Pricing website.
  • Collect SMF data as required by the Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool. Retain the collected SMF data for a period of not less than six months.
  • Use the IBM provided Sub-Capacity Reporting Tool to process the collected SMF data. The Sub-Capacity Report produced by the tool is used to determine required license capacity for the WLC products. Required license capacity is determined based on the largest MSU value of a WLC product running concurrently in all LPARs during the reporting period. IBM reserves the right to request the system data that supports these product-defined capacity values for a period of up to six months after the data was collected.
  • Provide an initial Sub-Capacity Report to begin to receive the benefits of less than full machine capacity charges. Sub-capacity charging will follow submission of a Sub-Capacity Report. There will be no retroactive application of sub-capacity charges.
  • Submit Sub-Capacity Reports monthly.
  • Submit Sub-Capacity Reports for all WLC products with complete data for the entire reporting period to the email address and by the date specified on the IBM z Systems Software Pricing website.

    Sub-Capacity Reports that reflect a changed product defined capacity will be considered to be orders placed by the customer without further action on the customer's part, and IBM is authorized to make any resulting billing increase or decrease. To place an order for a new license or to discontinue licenses, move licenses between machines, report a hardware model upgrade, or enable or disable product features, the customer must contact IBM or their IBM Business Partner.

  • Configure the machine to send weekly Transmit System Availability Data (TSAD) to IBM via the IBM z Systems server Remote Support Facility (RSF). If the machine cannot connect via the RSF, provide this TSAD through an alternate means documented in the z/OS Planning for Sub-Capacity Pricing publication on the IBM z Systems Software Pricing website.
