Bottom rule

LTFS EE Edition V1R1 is designed to enable policy management of tape as a storage tier in a GPFS-based environment, helping encourage the use of tape as a critical tier in the storage environment.

LTFS EE combines the ease of use of LTFS with the scalability, manageability, and performance of IBM GPFS, an industry leader in high availability and high I/O capabilities. LTFS EE extends GPFS abilities with simplified tape administration and relieves the complexity of transferring data from tiered disk storage to tape. This is especially beneficial to smaller organizations with fewer storage administrators. For organizations of any size, LTFS EE provides the ability to move beyond simply adding storage to optimize and streamline data management, enabling a reduction in of storage infrastructure and power costs.

As needs for capacity, I/O, and data availability grow, LTFS EE allows easy expansion of the tape tier of GPFS. The ability to add media and provision it in the LTFS pool of GPFS allows expanded archive capacity with minimal downtime, and without impacting the availability of data already in the pool. Performance of the tape drives and of the LTFS EE servers are load balanced by the LTFS EE software to ensure the highest possible data rate and data availability.

Specified operating environment

Hardware requirements

General platform prerequisites

Supported drives and media types for LTFS EE are documented within the infocenter at

The following drives are currently supported by LTFS EE:

LTFS EE supports mixed environments, and any combination of these drive types can be used in an LTFS EE environment and the supported media respectively.

The type of a media is coded in the last two bytes of the 8-character volser (barcode) on the tape.

Under the mixed configuration of IBM LTO Ultrium 6 and 5 tape drives within the same logical library, IBM LTFS EE will automatically select the most appropriate tape drive for accessing a tape.

The runtime memory and disk space requirements may be found in documentation accompanying the LTFS program.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective. IBM does not warrant that systems and products are immune from the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
