Description
The XIV hardware and software relationship
IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Software V11.1 is available on machine type-models 2810-114 and 2812-114. There is a one-to-one relationship between the base XIV Storage System Software V11 features of 5639-YYB and the hardware module features on machine type-models 2810-114 and 2812-114. IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Software is designed to make the XIV modules act as a redundant grid of storage. In addition to those featured in the base software, many advanced functions are now available in the IBM XIV Storage System Software V11.1.
SSD read caching for random workloads
Gen3 Software V11.1 supports heterogeneous workloads and any IO access pattern with SSD read caching performance boost.
Mirroring between Gen3 and previous XIV models
IBM XIV Storage System V11.1 now includes support to set up synchronous and asynchronous mirrors between Gen3 and previous XIV models, bidirectional mirroring, and re-purposing of previous XIV models to disaster recovery sites.
Multi-system management enhancements
IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Software V11.1 includes support for monitoring up to 81 XIV systems in a single GUI and the capability to search for objects in all of the XIV systems managed by the GUI, rather than just a specific XIV machine.
Real-time XIV monitoring on the Apple iPhone
Gen3 Software includes system performance and capacity utilization (App available solely through Apple's App Store).
New functionality available in IBM XIV Storage System Software V10.2.4.e
This version includes the ability to set up cross-generation synchronous and asynchronous mirroring.

Product positioning
IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Software is the disk system operating software for the 2810-114 and 2812-114 IBM XIV Storage Systems Gen3. This software provides the functional capabilities of the XIV system.
The combination of XIV hardware and software is designed to provide a high-performance, grid-based architecture that is exceptionally easy to use. This offers a scalable, reliable, enterprise disk system for UNIX, Linux, Microsoft Windows, and other supported distributed open server platforms.
It can provide a platform to address the need for reducing complexity while keeping pace with midsize to high-end disk capacity demands. IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 is a core product in the IBM Information Infrastructure. It is a good fit for clients who want to grow capacity, improve overall performance, and reduce backup intervals, as well as reduce costs and task load on storage administrators, without the need to manage multiple tiers of storage.
The XIV system is especially well-suited as consolidated utility storage for fast-growing, dynamically mixed, and emerging workloads.
Also, IBM XIV Storage System Software V10.2.4.e offers cross-generation mirroring.

Statement of direction
It is the current plan and intent of IBM that the IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 (XIV System) will support IPv6 and IPsec protocols on all of its management ports, and will conform to the USGv6 v1.0 profile. Completion of USGv6 certification testing is planned for the first half of 2012. It is intended that support for these protocols will allow the XIV System, with Fibre Channel connected hosts, to operate in a pure IPv6 environment.
IBM's statements regarding its plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice at IBM's sole discretion. Information regarding potential future products is intended to outline our general product direction and it should not be relied on in making a purchasing decision. The information mentioned regarding potential future products is not a commitment, promise, or legal obligation to deliver any material, code, or functionality. Information about potential future products may not be incorporated into any contract. The development, release, and timing of any future features or functionality described for our products remains at our sole discretion.

IBM Electronic Services
IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic Service Agent is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
