| Overview |
IBM Rational Automation Framework provides a robust, customizable and extensible framework for management and control of complex, heterogeneous middleware environments.
IBM Rational Automation Framework provides a multi-cell tool for WebSphere® middleware environments that can deliver automation and consolidation capabilities to the WebSphere development, Q&A, staging, and production administration functions. The framework helps businesses increase productivity, improve speed, quality, and consistency of application delivery, and reduce costs of standards compliance, IT governance, and disaster recovery.
With MidVision extensions announced in April, 2011, and available separately, IBM Rational Automation Framework brings the same automation benefits and value to additional IBM middleware platforms of WebSphere MQ and WebSphere Message Broker and to leading non-IBM middleware platforms of Oracle WebLogic Application Server and RedHat JBoss Application Server.
IBM Rational Automation Framework V3.0 further enhances customer value in these key ways:
- Customers do not have to separately purchase Build Forge server or Build Forge Access user licenses to support an Rational Automation Framework environment. Instead, an IBM Rational Automation Framework purchase includes all the technologies necessary to support a fully functional automation environment.
- IBM Rational Automation
Framework is now licensed directly in terms of the size of middleware
estates it manages:
- Middleware estates running on Distributed platforms are measured in terms of PVUs and, thus, IBM Rational Automation Framework is available in PVU terms to manage those estates.
- Middleware estates running on z/OS® platform are measured in terms of Value Units (VUs), while the actual consumption is measured in terms of Million Service Units (MSUs). Thus, a separate chargeable component of IBM Rational Automation Framework is available to these customers with the charge metric of Reference Value Units (RVUs) that accounts for the z/OS consumption.
- Customers have an enhanced user experience with this version of IBM Rational Automation Framework that is aligned with the standard middleware administrative structure and more intuitive to middleware user base.
Finally, this version includes enhancements that further improve conformance with customer security policies.

| Description |
IBM Rational Automation Framework is a robust, cohesive, and extensible framework for management and control of complex, heterogeneous middleware environments. IBM Rational Automation Framework helps customers to substantially improve their development and operations functions. With IBM Rational Automation Framework, customers can:
- Improve productivity and quality
- Control operational costs to manage large, heterogeneous middleware
- Retain and capture knowledge across middleware environments
- Enhance disaster recovery preparedness
- Enforce governance with little or no additional workloads
Simplified and cost-effective procurement
IBM took drastic steps in simplifying the IBM Rational Automation Framework product packaging and pricing to make it straight-forward for customers to understand and procure it. Key facets of this simplification include:
- No purchase dependency on Build Forge Server or user licenses
- Simplified licensing licensing based on the size of the total middleware estate it manages
- A single, low price to manage any of the supported middleware targets
IBM Rational Automation Framework is now available as a stand-alone product with no purchase dependency on IBM Rational Build Forge. IBM Rational Automation Framework continues to exploit the Build Forge automation engine to bring in the same benefits to customers as it did in IBM Rational Automation Framework for WebSphere in the past. However, IBM Rational Automation Framework now bundles the necessary Build Forge technologies as Embedded Programs so that customers do not have to separately purchase the Build Forge Server or user licenses.
Removal of Build Forge purchase dependency dramatically increases the returns on customer investments and enables you to efficiently roll out a common, cohesive automation solution to manage your entire middleware infrastructure:
- First, it lowers the entry barriers to get started with IBM Rational Automation Framework: The savings in minimum investment needs to procure and set up IBM Rational Automation Framework can be as high as 70%.
- Further, as customers plan to expand IBM Rational Automation Framework footprint for fail-over and redundancy purposes and for continuous availability, or as they expand their user base, they do not need to separately purchase additional Build Forge Server or user licenses.
IBM Rational Automation Framework is now licensed in a most cost-effective way for our customers using it to manage middleware on both, Distributed and z/OS, platforms.
- For middleware on Distributed platforms, IBM Rational Automation Framework offers standard PVU (Processor Value Unit) licenses on reference basis. With this, customers measure the total PVUs of middleware on Distributed platforms that they intend to manage with IBM Rational Automation Framework, and they obtain that many PVU licenses of IBM Rational Automation Framework to cover their needs.
- For middleware on z/OS platform, IBM Rational Automation Framework
offers standard Resource Value Unit (RVU) licenses on reference basis
per the Value Unit Exhibit 007 (VUE007) of IBM System z® Software Pricing documented
here
With this, customers measure the intended usage of z/OS middleware in terms of Millions of Service Units (MSUs) and convert them Value Units (VUs) based on VUE007, and obtain that many RVU licenses of IBM Rational Automation Framework for z/OS Workloads to cover their needs. There is a tool available to convert MSUs to VUs and the reverse at
Finally, IBM Rational Automation Framework is offered at single low price points across all the separate middleware targets it supports. Additionlly, each IBM Rational Automation Framework license may be deployed to manage any of the supported automation targets. This enables customers to provide the total size of their middleware estate and procure the necessary IBM Rational Automation Framework licenses to cover the entire base in a simple, straightforward process.
Customers now have a simplified and cost-effective mechanism to procure and set up this solution to manage their middleware infrastructure and improve team productivity.
Seamless migration for existing customers
With this separation of IBM Rational Automation Framework for WebSphere as an optional component of Build Forge into its own PID, existing customers will go through a seamless migration from previous IBM Rational Automation Framework for WebSphere and Build Forge license entitlements to new IBM Rational Automation Framework entitlements.
Migration of IBM Rational Automation Framework for WebSphere Standard and Enterprise Edition Entitlements
- Each Server license entitlement to IBM Rational Automation Framework for WebSphere Standard Edition (PPA part number D090VLL) will be migrated to 4,000 PVU licenses of IBM Rational Automation Framework.
- Each Server license entitlement to IBM Rational Automation Framework for WebSphere Enterprise Edition (PPA part number D090CLL) will be migrated to 4,000 PVU licenses of IBM Rational Automation Framework.
Enhanced customer experience
With this new version, IBM Rational Automation Framework now offers a vastly enhanced customer experience with new Eclipse-based user interface (UI). The new UI is intuitive and aligned with typical middleware administrative structures and standard mode of operations. This UI is provided in addition to the existing interfaces and, thus, provides flexibility and choice to end users.
Users can perform most of the middleware operations through the more intuitive new UI and its perspectives of:
- WebSphere Cell Configuration Explorer
- WebSphere Cell Configuration Compare Utility
- Automation Plan Designer
Security enhancement
IBM Rational Automation Framework V3.0 includes a significant enhancement to align with customer security policies around WebSphere middleware. With "sudo" support, IBM Rational Automation Framework framework server can now employ one user ID to log into the target server and, then, switch over to another user ID with WebSphere administrative rights to perform remote tasks. This feature helps customers comply with corporate security policies and maintain smooth middleware operations.
Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act

Processor Value Unit
Processor Value Unit (PVU) is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU Table by Processor Value, Brand, Type and Model Number at http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/pvu_licensing_for_customers.html) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores
Licensee can deploy the program using either Full Capacity licensing or Virtualization Capacity (Sub-Capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (see webpage below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at http://www.ibm.com/software/lotus/passportadvantage/Counting_Software_licenses_using_specific_virtualization_technologies.html
* An Activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.
Notes
Some programs may require licenses for the program AND what is being managed. In that case, the following applies: In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis ONLY. In that case, the following applies: Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies: Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the Referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the Referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the Referenced program is licensed.
Express and Workgroup programs may be licensed with maximum use terms. In that case, the following applies: The maximum authorized use terms and conditions for PVU licensed IBM Express and Middleware programs can be found in the IBM Express and Middleware Licensing Guide.
Resource Value Unit (RVU)
RVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. RVU entitlements are based on the quantity of a specific designated measurement for the given program. A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of RVUs required for your environment as defined by the specific program terms. The RVU entitlements are specific to the program and may include, but are not limited to the following: Client Devices, data source records, messages, and servers, and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with RVU entitlements of another program. To understand these benefits of RVU licensing, and to determine how many RVUs to obtain for the program, contact your IBM representative.
