IBM FileNet Image
Services has been a leading document imaging solution for many years. IBM FileNet IDM
Desktop, Web Services, and Open Client continue to provide a client development
environment for Image Services. Those two products are combined with IBM FileNet Content
Manager to create IBM FileNet Image Manager Active Edition, which allows
users to expand their Image Services footprint into FileNet Content Manager.
- IBM FileNet Image
Services V4.2, a production imaging solution, incorporates support for the
latest releases of operating systems and databases that Image Services supports,
and the Image Services-specific elements of bi-directional content federation
services - image services (CFS-IS) (must be combined with IBM FileNet Content
Manager V5.1 for complete bi-directional federation).
- IBM FileNet IDM
Desktop, Web Services, Open Client V4.0.3 are shipped with Image Services
and Image Manager Active Edition.
- IBM FileNet Image
Manager Active Edition V5.0 is comprised of FileNet Image Services V4.2 and FileNet Content
Manager V5.0. FileNet Image
Manager Active Edition allows you to more easily migrate from FileNet Image
Services to FileNet Content
Manager, or choose to keep existing content in FileNet Image Service while deploying
new applications and content with FileNet Content Manager.

Services V4.2
IBM FileNet Image
Manager Active Edition V5.0 includes IBM FileNet Image Services V4.2 and IBM FileNet Content
Manager V5.0.
IBM FileNet Image
Services (IS) is a widely used document imaging solution. IS V4.2 is the first
major release of Image Services since IBM acquired FileNet Corporation.
IBM announced
withdrawal of support for Oracle run-time licenses. FileNet used to sell Oracle run-time
licenses with IS. New sales were withdrawn over five years ago, but IBM continued
to allow you to renew your support contracts for the Oracle licenses. For
information on the withdraw of IBM Oracle runtime licenses, refer to Withdrawal
Announcement 911-002, dated January 11, 2011.
While IS continues to support the use of the Oracle database for Image
Services, support contracts for the Oracle database must, after December 13,
2011, be obtained from Oracle or one of its partners. If you wish to switch
from Oracle to IBM DB2®,
you should contact your IBM representative.
IBM discontinued
support for Near Line Storage (NLS) within IS V4.2.
Integral Single Document Storage (ISDS) is the replacement for NLS. Now,
with IS V4.2, you can complete the transition from NLS to ISDS.
With IS V4.2, IBM is dropping support for Windows® 2003 SP2 (Enterprise, Standard,
and DataCenter). Microsoft® discontinued support in July 2010.
IBM discontinued
support for SQL Server 2000. Microsoft dropped support in 2008. IBM discontinued
support for DB2 V8.2. IBM already
supports DB2 V9.1, DB2 V9.5,
and DB2 V9.7.
IBM dropped
support for HP-UX PA-RISC. DB2 does not support HP-UX PA-RISC.
Note about bi-directional Content Federation Services - Image Services
(CFS-IS). Bi-directional federation with CFS-IS is available as a function
within IBM FileNet Image
Services and IBM FileNet Content
Manager. (CFS-IS is shipped with FileNet Content Manager.) The latest
versions of those products are IBM FileNet Image Services V4.2 and IBM FileNet Content
Manager V5.0. You require FileNet Content Manager V5.1 in order to have full
bi-directional federation.
IBM FileNet IDM
Desktop, Web Services, and Open Client V4.0.3 (IDM) is a thick client that
provides accessibility to IBM FileNet Image Services and IBM FileNet Content Services. IDM Web Services
is a thin, web-based client that provides functionality similar to IDM Desktop.
It uses JavaScript™ and requires download of ActiveX components
to provide richer UI experience. Open Client is also a thin, web-based client
that provides functionality similar to Web Services, but does not require
any IBM FileNet software
to be installed on the client machine.
Enhancements include the following:
- Applied IBM install
and uninstall experience and support of operating system and database versions.
- Upgraded support for IDM from VC++ 6.0 to Visual Studio 2005.
- Support for Microsoft 2007, Microsoft 2010, .Net 3.5, and VS 2008
for Open Client.
- Conversion support with help files to .chm format enables Vista users
to view help files. This conversion is needed since latest Windows operating
systems versions will switch to using .chm format going forward.
- Numerous functional improvements including support for more document types
(for instance, viewing support for TIFF LZW compression, and for TIFF format
documents with JPEG); support for different time zones; improvements to the
find function (for instance, ability to search closed documents in IDM Find
will help user searches).
- Performance improvements for file upload in Open Client.

User Value Unit (UVU)
UVU is the metric by which this program is licensed. UVU entitlements are
based on the number of users for the given program. A Proof of Entitlement
(PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of UVUs required for your
environment as defined by the specific program terms. The UVU entitlements
are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated
with UVU entitlements of another software program. UVU licensing offers you
price benefits for customers by enabling a lower cost of incremental growth
of resources. To understand these benefits of UVU licensing, and to determine
