New tool features and enhancements included
Updated platform support that provides interoperability with other IBM Rational Tools
IBM Rational Method
Composer has been updated to support Windows 7 (32- and 64-bit version operating
in 32-bit mode), Internet Explorer 8, and Red Hat Linux® 5 Update 4. In addition, a number
of other updates have been made to support interoperability with Jazz Foundation
and IBM Rational
Team Concert including:
- Upgrade to Eclipse 3.5.2
- Upgrade from BIRT 2.5.2
- Upgrade to IBM Java 6
- Upgrade to IBM Installation
Manager 1.4.1
Updated integrations that support new versions of products
Updates to the following integrations have been made to support the latest
versions of products. These updates include: CCRC 7.1.2, CC SCM 7.5.0, IBM Rational Asset
Manager Eclipse Client V7.5.0.
New integrations that expand the ecosystem
IBM Rational Method
Composer V7.5.1 now supports the Eclipse-Synergy 4.2 integration. This integration
delivers support for task-based configuration and change management and collaborative
development of process assets using IBM Rational Synergy V7.1 and IBM Rational Change
V5.2 (optional) with IBM Rational Method Composer V7.5.1.
New capabilities that provide IBM Rational Team Concert and Jazz Foundation
interoperability for process enactment
Several new capabilities are added to IBM Rational Method Composer V7.5.1 to
support interoperability and process enactment with IBM Rational Team Concert V3.0
and Jazz Foundation
3.0
Eclipse shell sharing
With the availability or IBM Rational Method Composer V7.5.1, it is now possible
to shell share IBM Rational Method
Composer with IBM Rational
Team Concert V3.0.
Ability to create IBM Rational Team Concert work item templates
for process enactment
A new capability is added to IBM Rational Method Composer to export IBM Rational Team
Concert/Jazz work item templates based on a work breakdown structure, or portion
of a work breakdown structure in IBM Rational Method Composer. Fine-grained
control of which work breakdown structure elements (Phases, iterations, activities,
and tasks) are exported is provided via the "Planned Flag" for each work breakdown
structure element. The exported work item templates can be instantiated in IBM Rational
Team Concert V3.0 to create a structured project plan, iteration plan
or ad-hoc set of tasks and activities that include links to the detailed process
guidance from IBM Rational Method
Composer.
Ability to export IBM Rational Method Composer practices to Jazz Foundation
It is now possible to export one or more practices to Jazz Foundation.
The resulting file can then be imported to Jazz Foundation so that the content can
be viewed in Jazz-based tools such as IBM Rational Team Concert V3.0
and IBM Rational Quality
Manager V3.0 and/or edited using a simple web-based editor, Jazz Process Authoring
that is included in Jazz Foundation. The Jazz Process Authoring Application will
be available as a tech preview with Jazz Foundation 3.0.
Harvest practice updates from Jazz Foundation
It is now possible to import one or more practices from Jazz Foundation
3.0 to IBM Rational Method
Composer to support harvesting of practice updates made by the team enacting
the process.
Specify required work product states
It is now possible to specify the permitted states for each work product
directly in the work product editor in IBM Rational Method Composer. Specific
states can then be selected and assigned to each input and output work product
on the task descriptor (a task descriptor is an instance of a task used within
the context of a process or process pattern/capability pattern.) editor providing
a more complete specification for process enactment.
Configuration free processes
Previously, a capability pattern had to be associated with a default configuration.
Subsequently, capability patterns could only be used in the default configuration
or a superset of the default configuration. IBM Rational Method Composer V7.5.1 removes
this constraint by providing the option to select None, as the default configuration.
These so called "Configuration free processes" may be used in any configuration.
Realization rules are applied at publishing time (or during browsing) to ensure
that the realized capability pattern is consistent with the selected configuration
(suppressing tasks/activities that are not in the configuration and resolving
variability according to the elements that are in the selected configuration).
This greatly simplifies the re-use of capability patterns by eliminating
the need to create "dummy configurations" for use as the default configuration
for capability patterns and the associated constraints on re-use.
Auto-synchronized descriptors
Previously if a method element was updated one had to manually synchronize
capability patterns or activities that directly referenced the subject element.
This was a tedious task that required one to determine which capability patterns
or activities were affected by the change and to manually edit each of these
items. A new library preference is provided to select auto-synchronization.
When selected, the library will be updated to replace all copies of method
elements within containing capability patterns with a reference to the base
element. These so called "auto-synchronized descriptors" are always in synch
with the base elements by virtue of this reference vs. copy implementation.
It is still possible to tailor the referencing copies (for example, the
element descriptors), for example to suppress an input on a task descriptor,
and these modifications vs. the base element will be retained and highlighted
in the process editor property page for the descriptor so you can always tell
if, and how a descriptor has been modified with respect to the base method
element. This enhancement greatly simplifies method authoring and maintenance.
Note: If a library is converted to the auto-synchronization format
it cannot be converted back to the old style of library.
Flexible licensing options
Previously, there was only one license, a perpetual Authorized User license,
that applied to both the use IBM Rational Method Composer Tool and the use of the
published commercial content. This created a situation where clients were
forced to purchase the tool for all team members even if they only had a few
process authors and wanted to have the entitlement to use the published content
for the majority of their users.
With IBM Rational Method
Composer V7.5.1 more flexible licensing options are available. First, a new
licensing option is available for users that only want to purchase the right
to use the published commercial content. This license is available as a perpetual,
authorized user license as part of a new offering in the IBM Rational Method
Composer family called the "IBM Rational Method Composer Content Reader". Second,
the following new licensing options are provided for the IBM Rational Method
Composer tool:
- Authorized User Single Instance Perpetual
- Authorized User Single Instance Term-based
- Floating License Perpetual
- Floating license Term-based
- Token licensing
All license terms have been aligned with the IBM standard license policies implemented
recently to simplify the number of license terms across the IBM Rational portfolio.

Authorized User
Authorized User is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed.
An Authorized User is an individual (named or unnamed) within or outside of
your enterprise. The program may be installed on one or more computers or
servers and accessed by the number of users authorized by the Proof of Entitlement
(PoE). You must have an entitlement for each Authorized User accessing the
program or any program component in any manner directly or indirectly (for
example, via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through
any means.
Authorized User Single Install
Authorized User Single Install is a unit of measure by which the Program
can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access
to the Program. An Install is an installed copy of the Program on a physical
or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. The Program may
be installed on any number of computers or servers, but if the Authorized
User has accessed or has access to more than one Install of the Program, the
Authorized User requires a separate entitlement for each such Install. Licensee
must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User accessing
the Program on each Install in any manner directly or indirectly (for example:
via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.
An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User and
may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer
of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.
Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered
users. In that case the following applies: Any computing device that requests
the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures,
or applications from the Program or that is otherwise managed by the Program
is considered a separate User of the Program and requires an entitlement as
if that device were a person.
Floating User Single Install
Floating User Single Install is a unit of measure by which the Program
can be licensed. A Floating User is a person who is accessing the Program
at any particular point in time. An Install is an installed copy of the Program
on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer.
The Program may be installed on any number of computers or servers, but if
the Floating User simultaneously accesses more than one Install of the Program,
the Floating User requires a separate entitlement for each such Install. Licensee
must obtain separate entitlements for each Floating User simultaneously accessing
the Program on each Install in any manner directly or indirectly (for example:
via a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means.
