Overview
Bottom rule

Business Event Processing (BEP) is the next generation in event processing. It extends the capabilities and tools of traditional event processing approaches to the business user to sense and respond to business events-any occurrence or happening within business context-presenting opportunities or threats.

WebSphere Business Events V6.2 is a software system designed specifically for managing these business events flowing across systems and people with the goal of providing timely insight and response. Business events are discovered and described in business terms to meet business objectives based on high-level management goals. WebSphere Business Events allows business users to sense (detect and decide) and respond effectively to the impact of business events.

WebSphere Business Events delivers this capability through intuitive business user tools that define, implement, and manage business events. WebSphere Business Events uniquely provides graphical, codeless authoring for defining related elements:

  • Business event actions
  • Business interaction logic
  • External sources for event data enrichment
  • Consoles for task management and business event flow visualizations of charts, graphs, and dashboard layouts

Key features

  • Enables straightforward expression of business event interaction logic
  • Understands business language and vernacular
  • Senses business events and patterns and initiates the appropriate business actions
  • Includes codeless, graphical authoring tools
  • Delivers simple and integrated visualization dashboard support
  • Connects to existing islands of event information
  • Supports both simple and complex business event pattern correlations
  • Delivers an integrated development and execution system
  • Installs as plug and play to extend your existing environments
  • Operates with high performance, scalability, and high availability (HA)
  • Enhances existing Business Process Management (BPM), connectivity products, and service oriented architecture (SOA) infrastructures

WebSphere Business Events eXtreme Scale V6.2, a combined offering of WebSphere Business Events and WebSphere eXtreme Scale, extends business event processing to customers with an extreme volume of business events flowing through their enterprise.

CICS® Transaction Server (CICS TS) and WebSphere Business Events interoperability

IBM will provide support for interoperation between WebSphere Business Events V6 and CICS TS V3. This capability will be delivered through a new CICS TS SupportPactm, available for download from the CICS Web site by year-end 2008 for all licensed users of CICS TS V3. This new CICS SupportPac will allow event points, which can be coded explicitly within the CICS TS application logic, to be implemented in CICS applications. This capability will position CICS TS as a key source for emitting business events in a format suitable for consumption by WebSphere Business Events.

CICS TS V3 customers will be able to use the new CICS SupportPac to emit events for WebSphere Business Events consumption with the confidence that this initial event support in CICS TS will be enhanced and integrated into the CICS TS runtime.

Description
Bottom rule

WebSphere Business Events enables organizations to introduce and subsequently include BEP in their application landscape. The ability to correlate cross-departmental and cross-application events provides a business context sensitive bridge between islands of processing and people. As user-defined events and patterns are detected, WebSphere Business Events provides pertinent business insight back to the users allowing them to understand and react as situations demand. WebSphere Business Events delivers business-focused functionality using the following basic elements:

Tools for connectivity to key business events

Business events exists across the extended information infrastructure. IT developers can identify, and readily connect to these events through tools provided with the system. They are further enabled to leverage other technologies within BPM, connectivity and SOA environments to deliver the events that business users need to evaluate, correlate and respond to in order to meet their objectives.

Tools for defining events and processing logic

As IT developers make the necessary event definition and connections, the line-of-business analysts can apply their knowledge of the desired business processes. Through the use of the graphical, non-programming user interfaces, business analysts can define the logic for evaluating, correlating and responding to events and patterns that occur.

The graphical user interface provides the ability for business users to apply business concepts such as business vernacular, heuristics, and event processing. The business users can create and maintain event processing logic without having to learn a programming language.

WebSphere Business Events Runtime

Once business events definitions and processing logic are complete, the WebSphere Business Events Runtime executes, detecting and sifting through the mass of events occurring across the information infrastructure. The run time system sifts through the events identifying only those events and patterns of interests as previously defined. Upon sensing a defined event or pattern, the engine will initiate one or more business responses (actions) as defined by the users. Responses range from electronically alerting or initiating the execution of follow on processes.

Business insight delivery

The system provides graphical displays (dashboards) allowing users to visualize the event processing in real-time. It enables business users to visualize the business events that are occurring, both individually and in summary, to allow them to adjust the event processing logic when necessary. The ability to view business event processing in real-time is critical to enabling the business to respond to actionable situations, taking advantage of business opportunities and mitigating risks.

Benefits of BEP

Businesses can readily create and maintain the logic supporting business event processing using WebSphere Business Events. WebSphere Business Events provides:

  • An integrated environment to rapidly develop, deploy, and manage BEP
  • A codeless and graphical user interface designed to enable business users to create and maintain the logic around BEP
  • A plug and play implementation approach for leveraging existing business systems with minimal intrusion
  • Comprehensive source and version control
  • High performance on a scalable server architecture (refer to the following text on WebSphere Business Events eXtreme Scale)

National languages support

Business user tooling is translated into Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish, and Russian.

WebSphere Business Events eXtreme Scale V6.2, an offering combining WebSphere Business Events and WebSphere eXtreme Scale, extends business event processing to customers with an extreme volume of business events flowing through their enterprise.

Product positioning
Bottom rule

WebSphere Business Events is part of the BPM portfolio. It can also leverage WebSphere Connectivity products. It is capable of being a stand alone installation or part of a broader BPM environment. It particularly extends the reach and responsiveness of Business Activity Management (BAM) by adding business events as another business activity type that can be monitored.

WebSphere Business Events also extends the cross-IBM software capabilities around event processing that is offered in multiple other IBM brands.

WebSphere Business Events is unique in the competitive market for event processing because of its focus on the line-of-business user and business events, instead of integration events that are just business events. Providing business events tooling to the line-of-business user differentiates WebSphere Business Events among competitive products.

When comparing total cost of ownership (TCO) between WebSphere Business Events and its competition, WebSphere Business Events is designed to improve the TCO through codeless implementations, enacted by business users, often without incurring IT development or implementation costs. As business users mature in WebSphere Business Events usage, reuse of connections to business event sources will enable less code.

Statement of direction
Bottom rule

IBM intends, by year-end 2009:

  • To integrate into CICS TS and extend the eventing capability being delivered in the new CICS TS V3 SupportPac
  • To provide new capability to enable business analysts and developers to instrument CICS business logic with WebSphere Business Events without changing the existing CICS applications

Licensed CICS TS users wishing to gain an early insight to this intended capability may apply to participate in the CICS Beta program by sending an email to CICSEP@uk.ibm.com.

With this statement of direction, all licensed users of CICS TS can plan to enable their CICS systems fully to participate in an event-enabled SOA, confident that the CICS portfolio of products continues to be well-aligned with SOA evolution.

Note: CICS TS and WebSphere Business Events are separately ordered and entitled products.

All statements regarding IBM plans, directions, and intent are subject to change or withdrawal without notice.

Processor Value Unit (PVU): PVU is the unit of measure by which this program is licensed. PVU entitlements are based on processor families (vendors and brands). A Proof of Entitlement (PoE) must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on the level or tier of all processor cores activated and available for use by the Program on the server. Some programs allow licensing to less than the full capacity of the server"s activated processor cores, sometimes referred to as sub-capacity licensing. For programs which offer sub-capacity licensing, if a server is partitioned utilizing eligible partitioning technologies, then a PoE must be obtained for the appropriate number of PVUs based on all activated processor cores available for use in each partition where the program runs or is managed by the program. Refer to the International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Terms or the program"s license information to determine applicable sub-capacity terms. The PVU entitlements are specific to the program and may not be exchanged, interchanged, or aggregated with PVU entitlements of another program.

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

This product is only available via Passport Advantage. It is not available as shrinkwrap.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the license information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of five years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions

To be eligible for sub-capacity pricing, the machine on which the eligible products are installed and running must be eligible for sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions. Software pricing, at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, apply when running:

  • AIX 5Ltm V5.1, or later, on an IBM System p® 690 or equivalent partition-capable operating system and machine
  • OS/400® V5R1, or later, running on an IBM System i®
  • Linux running in an LPAR under AIX 5L V5.1, OS/400 V5R1, or in a partition on an equivalent partition-capable operating system and server

Sub-capacity pricing for eligible products is based on the current program pricing methodology, but the number of processors will be determined based on the sum of processors for all partitions where the program is defined (used). To obtain pricing at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, you are required to:

  • Install and use, when available, IBM license use management program, which installs with eligible IBM programs.
  • Install available updates to the operating system and eligible products such that license use can be accurately managed.
  • Determine if the use of sub-capacity pricing terms results in a reduced requirement for entitlements; you can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing entitlements across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve them for future growth. There will be no refunds for these freed up entitlements. Subscription, Software Maintenance and support volumes, and entitlements for existing contracts will continue at the same levels as the acquired licenses.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agenttm is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
