Overview
Bottom rule

IBM WebSphere Business Monitor is comprehensive business activity monitoring (BAM) software that provides business users and managers with a real-time and end-to-end view of business processes and operations. It is a core part of the WebSphere Dynamic Process Edition foundational offering of the IBM Business Process Management (BPM) Suite, and is also available as a standalone product. It provides customizable business dashboards that calculate and display key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics derived from business processes, business activity data, and business events from a wide range of information sources. Business users can view these KPIs, metrics, and alerts through various means including lightweight Web interfaces, Smartphones, via corporate portals, and on desktops. These offer business users immediate actionable information and insight into their business operations to mitigate problems or take advantage of opportunities.

New capabilities in V6.2:

  • New Web-based graphical business user interface, called Business Space powered by WebSphere, permits customers to easily integrate monitoring capabilities along with other BPM applications for holistic management of business processes.
  • Ability to predict KPI values for future periods enabling users to preempt potential problems and take advantage of potential opportunities. Users can set and receive alerts if the predictive KPI exceeds a threshold for advance warning of anomalous business situations.
  • A comprehensive list of commonly used industry-specific KPIs and metrics from APQC, available at design time in the tooling, to guide users in choosing the most appropriate measures to manage their critical business processes.
  • Advanced problem detection by feeding any KPI alerts to WebSphere Business Events to detect hidden patterns in the alerts and indicate a potential business problem that might otherwise go undetected.
  • Ability for business users to set up and manage alerts without involving IT. This increased business user empowerment can lead to greater agility and quicker decision making by the end user and expands upon the capability of enabling business users to set up their own KPIs in WebSphere Business Monitor.
  • Improved integration enabling WebSphere Business Services Fabric to access WebSphere Business Monitor KPI values for optimal selection of business services and policies to achieve desired business results.
  • Improved analysis of business processes by providing measures based on standard deviation to ensure repeatability and reliability of a process; also provides historical views for additional analysis.
  • Increased responsiveness for business users to business situations by providing flexible access to BAM information, such as in Lotus® Sametime®, via iPhone or through Excel, in addition to the desktop and Blackberry Smartphones.
  • Accelerated the time to value by enabling the business analyst to develop and deploy monitoring solutions directly from WebSphere Business Modeler for monitoring human centric processes deployed on WebSphere Process Server.
  • Additional industry specific content in form of monitoring models and dashboards for healthcare, telecom, insurance, and banking. These are aligned with the WebSphere Business Services Fabric reference implementations so when you buy other BPM products, you can accelerate your end-to-end implementation.
  • Simplified development of end-to-end monitoring solutions that lets you enable legacy applications to emit events to WebSphere Business Monitor via familiar REST APIs and WS-Notification Web service interface.

Description
Bottom rule

IBM WebSphere Business Monitor enables you to improve your business results by providing the ability to be able to predict anomalous business situations and react preemptively rather than reactively.

WebSphere Business Monitor provides real-time information on performance of critical business processes to business users on user-friendly and customizable dashboards. By providing the business users with process visibility in their daily workspace, WebSphere Business Monitor enables the IT departments to focus on higher value projects and innovative solutions rather than routine and inefficient data collection for their LOB users. WebSphere Business Monitor enables IT to very quickly develop Monitoring solutions to provide a comprehensive view of the business by collecting real-time events from a wide variety of sources.

  • IBM Business Process Management (BPM) Suite and Connectivity portfolio: WebSphere Process Server, IBM FileNet® P8 Business Process Manager, WebSphere MQ Workflow, WebSphere Business Events, WebSphere Message Broker, WebSphere Enterprise Service Bus, WebSphere DataPower® Integration Appliance XI50, and WebSphere Partner Gateway.
  • Events and data from Oracle, SAP, Siebel and other enterprise resource planning (ERP) and CRM applications through the use of WebSphere Adapters and the IBM Connectivity portfolio.
  • Events from your applications and other third-party applications through the IBM Connectivity portfolio.

Rich analytics provide business users with additional insight into the business operations and processes to make better, more informed decisions based on historical and trending data. Tight integration with the IBM BPM Suite of products enables you to rapidly improve critical business processes.

Key enhancements in WebSphere Business Monitor V6.2:

  • Business Space

Business users can view KPI information, notifications, alerts, and historical analyses within their Business Space powered by WebSphere, an integrated, Web-based end-user interface.

  • Predictive monitoring
    • Predictive KPIs and alerts: This will help business users to predict future values of KPIs based on historical trends and the current values of the KPIs. The predicted KPI values take into account the KPIs past performance, current trend, rate of change, and, optionally a seasonal cycle. For example, users will be able to predict the number of customers expected two days from today based on trends in the past. This feature will enable business users to anticipate potential business situations and react proactively.
    • Predictive alerts: Users will be able to set alerts to get warnings if the KPI predictions indicate any problems. This will enable users to get advanced warning of any impending problems or opportunities so that they can proactively resolve or take advantage of opportunities that are detected earlier. For example, if the predictive KPI indicates that the number of orders two days from now will exceed previous projections, then you will be able to stock additional inventory to satisfy these customers.
    • Ability to feed KPI alerts to WebSphere Business Events: This will extend the current integration by enabling WebSphere Business Monitor to send events to WebSphere Business Events for enhanced pattern detection and recognition. WebSphere Business Events will detect patterns and correlate KPI alerts that are generated by WebSphere Business Monitor for advanced business situation detection. Business users will then be able to receive better information to help them respond faster to their business needs. For example, by feeding alerts predicting client demand will exceed inventory, you will gain knowledge of potential stock shortages that previously was not available to them.
  • Agile decision making
    • Business users can now set up and manage their own alerts based on the KPIs they have defined. Previously, IT would create a list of alerts and the business user would have to subscribe to this list. WebSphere Business Monitor V6.2 extends this capability by enabling business users to define their own metrics, create KPIs and the associated alerts for more agile decision making and increased responsiveness - all without involving IT.
    • WebSphere Business Services Fabric can now access WebSphere Business Monitor KPIs through REST APIs. This feature enables more accurate insight into the current performance of the process to enable the optimal selection of proper business service policies and business services. Customers can be more responsive and have more dynamic business processes to various business situations.
  • Improved analysis of business processes
    • KPIs and measures based on standard deviation enable business users to understand the reliability of business processes. This feature enables users to quickly assess the consistency of their business processes and provide consistent service to their clients.
    • Historical KPI views provide business users with additional context for analysis. This feature will enable users to understand the past trends in the KPIs and aid with process improvement efforts.
  • Expanded access to BAM information
    • BAM information in Excel spreadsheets: This capability provides a plug-in to the Excel spreadsheet enabling users to pull in data directly into the spreadsheet. Users can then perform additional analysis through a tool they are familiar with to gain additional insights into the performance of their business processes, and consequently improve the business processes more effectively.
    • BAM dashboards in Lotus Sametime and Lotus Notes®: This enhances the ability of business users to collaborate to resolve business situations. It enables business users to capture the current dashboard views and KPIs, and send via Sametime or e-mail to another user. It also ensures that both users are looking at the same data so that they can collaborate effectively to resolve the business situation.
    • BAM KPIs and alerts on iPhones: This extends the ability of WebSphere Business Monitor to provide KPI information and alerts on iPhones as well as to Blackberry devices. Business users can obtain up-to-date information and alerts to business situations wherever they are so they can be more responsiveness and obtain the relevant information when they are making decisions on the go.
  • Accelerate development of Monitoring solutions
    • Capability to develop a WebSphere Business Monitor model ready to deploy from within WebSphere Business Modeler for human centric processes deployed to WebSphere Process Server. This feature enables business analysts who use WebSphere Business Modeler to capture the relevant KPIs to auto-generate the monitoring solution. Thus business analysts are able to develop and deploy monitoring solutions faster allowing them to respond rapidly to business change.
    • An embedded KPI wizard with a library of over 800 open standard KPIs based on the APQC Process Classification Framework (PCF). The PCF is an open standard enterprise model representing a series of interrelated processes that serve as the standard way for classifying and organizing business processes for clients within an industry. The KPI library will enable users to select KPIs for various processes across several functions including financial management, human capital management, customer relationship management, and supply chain management. The readily accessible library of KPIs enables business users to quickly and easily discover and use KPIs for their specific process, thus reducing the time it takes to build a monitoring solution.
    • Industry-specific WebSphere Business Monitor models and dashboard templates for healthcare, telecom, insurance, and banking will enable you to leverage the prebuilt assets, industry-specific KPIs, and metrics to jump-start the development of monitoring projects in these industries. The models are aligned with the Fabric reference implementation for these industries enabling you to accelerate the end-to-end development of business processes for specific industries.
    • Expanded event delivery mechanisms to WebSphere Business Monitor server. New ways include:
      • Using REST APIs
      • Using WS-Notification Web service interface

This feature will help you develop end-to-end monitoring solutions very quickly. Thus you can enable critical business applications to send business events to WebSphere Business Monitor very quickly, using standard programming techniques for a variety of platforms. You can therefore obtain an end-to-end monitoring of your business processes and applications and get a comprehensive view of your business.

    • Improved monitoring of flows on WebSphere Message Broker, including the ability to view the business changes occurring within the processing of the message flow; ability to access richer data within the message flow. This helps IT develop end-to-end monitoring solutions to aggregate real-time information on performance of critical processes with real-time information from other parts of the business, resulting in business users being able to more effectively tackle problems, improve efficiencies and increase revenue.

WebSphere Dynamic Process Edition integration through Business Space

Empowering business users through Business Space powered by WebSphere

Business Space powered by WebSphere enables business users to create an integrated and customized user experience so that they can access contextualized process information in a secure role-based environment. Users can create their own spaces, or a collection of pages that comprise a business process, application, or collaborative end-user experience within Web-based tooling. Business Space also provides a collection of templates, which are preintegrated user experiences that can be customized or used to rapidly create a new process experience. Users can choose to mark their spaces as private or share their spaces with potential viewers or contributors make smarter decisions and take action more quickly.

Business users can collaborate with their colleagues and subject matter experts within Business Space. Business Space also enables IT developers to achieve faster time to value when developing their BPM end-user experiences, through better reuse of out-of-the-box product content and simplified user interface assembly tooling. By providing a consolidated view of business process content and enabling contextual collaboration in one location, Business Space enables business users to manage their processes more effectively, make smarter decisions, and take action more quickly.

Business Space ships as a common business user interface component with the following runtime products: WebSphere Business Monitor, WebSphere Process Server, WebSphere Business Services Fabric, and WebSphere Business Modeler Publishing Server. Users of WebSphere Integration Developer can create business space content from within their test environments. Users of WebSphere Business Modeler can interact with process models in the Business Space as part of deploying those models to a managed test environment. Finally, Business Space also complements the out-of-the-box administrative client that ships with WebSphere Process Server (BPC Explorer), and is used by IT administrators.

With each purchased and deployed BPM product, you receive additional Business Space content that surfaces the capabilities of that product. To provide a richer BPM portfolio experience, this content has been preintegrated to take advantage of suite capabilities. In addition, you can create and integrate your own custom content within the Business Space alongside BPM product content for accessing your internal systems and application content.

Further WebSphere Dynamic Process Edition integration

Overview of process content available in Business Space

  • Users of WebSphere Business Monitor can view KPI information, notifications, alerts, and historical analyses within the Business Space.
  • Users of WebSphere Process Server can work with human tasks, business rules, govern changes to business artifacts, and work with business calendars. Additionally, WebSphere Process Server provides content for the IT administrator to assess the health of their BPM systems and applications, as well as ensure smooth operation.
  • Users who have deployed on WebSphere Business Services Fabric can easily create new processes or immediately change existing processes - without IT involvement - by modifying business service policy attributes linked to these processes from within Business Space. Examples of these attributes include a new role, channel, region, or a broad corporate policy.
  • Users of WebSphere Business Modeler Publishing Server can share and collaborate on process models, dashboard designs, and user interaction forms within Business Space.

Example of a process scenario using Business Space as part of WebSphere Dynamic Process Edition

When a client has these products deployed, a business user can combine process content from across the WebSphere Dynamic Process Edition and other BPM products from WebSphere to manage their processes in a holistic manner. For example, a manager could receive an alert in Business Space that a KPI has exceeded its threshold. This user can then create a task and assign it to one of his staff. The staff member would claim that task in his own Business Space environment, complete the work by changing a business rule, and then send a notification back to the manager informing him that the KPI is now back on track. The manager might then notify the company's executive team that the KPI target threshold has been reached and suggest that the business rule change across the entire corporation. Should the executive team agree, they would assign an individual to change a business service policy in their systems, and all business rules across the corporation that subscribe to the policy would immediately be updated.

Terms and conditions
Bottom rule

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

This product is only available via Passport Advantage. It is not available as shrinkwrap.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

http://www.ibm.com/support/handbook

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product will be available for a minimum of five years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect. This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (via telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to updates, releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, via announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions

To be eligible for sub-capacity pricing, the machine on which the eligible products are installed and running must be eligible for sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions. Software pricing, at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, apply when running:

  • AIX 5Ltm V5.1, or later, on an IBM System p® 690 or equivalent partition-capable operating system and machine
  • OS/400® V5R1, or later, running on an IBM System i®
  • Linux running in an LPAR under AIX 5L V5.1, OS/400 V5R1, or in a partition on an equivalent partition-capable operating system and server

Sub-capacity pricing for eligible products is based on the current program pricing methodology, but the number of processors will be determined based on the sum of processors for all partitions where the program is defined (used). To obtain pricing at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, you are required to:

  • Install and use, when available, IBM's license use management program, which installs with eligible IBM programs.
  • Install available updates to the operating system and eligible products such that license use can be accurately managed.
  • Determine if the use of sub-capacity pricing terms results in a reduced requirement for entitlements; you can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing entitlements across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve them for future growth. There will be no refunds for these freed up entitlements. Subscription, Software Maintenance and support volumes, and entitlements for existing contracts will continue at the same levels as the acquired licenses.
