  • IVM now supports assigning any number of virtual Ethernet adapters to partitions, assigning virtual Ethernet IDs, and full support for IEEE 802.1Q adapters. Virtual optical support has been extended to support loading and unloading of optical media files to a virtual optical device in the partition. Read-only support enables multiple partitions to access the same ISO image simultaneously. Read-write support allows partitions to treat the device as a DVD-RAM drive. In addition to the optical support, files may now be used for virtual disk in addition to physical and logical volumes.
  • The terminal or console of a partition may now be accessed via a secure encrypted (SSH) connection directly from the Web browser.
  • User interface enhancements include items such as a more intuitive tasks layout and improved virtual Ethernet management.

PowerVM Lx86

IBM offers PowerVM Lx86 which is designed to support the installation and running of many 32-bit x86 Linux applications1 on IBM Power 520, Power 550, Power 570, Power 575, and Power 595 platforms, the IBM BladeCenter JS21, IBM BladeCenter JS22, IBM BladeCenter JS12, and System p servers with POWER6, POWER5+ or POWER5 processors.

PowerVM Lx86 creates an x86 Linux application environment running on POWER processor-based systems by dynamically translating x86 instructions to Power Architecture™ instructions and caching them to enhance performance, as well as mapping x86 Linux system calls to Linux on POWER system calls. When coupled with the advanced technologies, capabilities, and offerings of PowerVM virtualization, clients can consolidate AIX, IBM i, Linux, and x86 Linux applications on the same high-capacity, high-performance server, providing the potential for consolidating more workloads and achieving higher system utilization than is possible with other server virtualization alternatives.

Version 1.2 is a new release of PowerVM Lx86, offering more options for clients wanting to consolidate 32-bit x86 Linux applications on Power Systems servers. It also offers the potential to improve the performance of certain 32-bit x86 Linux applications enabled with PowerVM Lx86 compared to version 1.1, particularly on POWER6 processor-based systems.

The new PowerVM Lx86 version 1.2 now supports two additional Linux operating system distribution releases: SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 for POWER version SP4 (SLES 9 SP4) and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 for POWER version 4.6 (RHEL4.6). These releases extend the support provided with PowerVM Lx86 version 1.1, including SLES 9 SP3, SLES 10, SLES 10 SP1, RHEL 4.4, and RHEL 4.5. With this new revision, PowerVM Lx86 provides comprehensive support for POWER6 processor-based servers, including IBM Power 595, Power 570, Power 550, Power 520, BladeCenter JS22, and IBM BladeCenter JS12 servers running both the SLES and RHEL Linux OS distributions.

In addition, with this version 1.2 release, support will be extended to the IBM Power servers that run the IBM i operating system2. These IBM Power servers will now be able to run x86 Linux applications using PowerVM Lx86 on Linux partitions alongside partitions running IBM i or AIX operating systems.

VIOS is an appliance that resides in a POWER5, POWER6, or IBM BladeCenter JS12, JS21, or JS22 partition. It facilitates the sharing of physical I/O resources between client partitions within the server. VIOS provides virtual SCSI devices and Ethernet bridging between virtual and physical networks. VIOS is offered as a standard feature on all PowerVM Editions. VIOS V1.5.2 offers support for IPv6, Tivoli Productivity Center, and additional CIM providers.

1
PowerVM Lx86 runs most x86 Linux applications; however, PowerVM Lx86 cannot run certain applications. Refer to the Limitations section for further information.
2
PowerVM Lx86 is not supported on existing System i servers.

Compared with version 1.1, PowerVM Lx86 version 1.2 also provides enhancements with the potential for delivering higher performance for certain x86 Linux applications. Incremental enhancements have been made to applications using the Java™ programming language, multi-threaded transactional environments, such as database and applications which perform floating-point arithmetic. Version 1.2 takes advantage of x86 acceleration technologies and instructions now available in POWER6 based systems. While PowerVM Lx86 version 1.2 is designed to enable applications exhibiting these characteristics to perform better compared with version 1.1, applications that are enabled for native execution on a Linux server solution (that is, do not require translation with PowerVM Lx86) are likely to exhibit better performance.

IBM suggests that clients carefully consider their performance requirements when selecting the best method for enabling applications for their environment.

  1. PowerVM Lx86 runs most x86 Linux applications, but PowerVM Lx86 cannot run applications that:
    • Directly access hardware devices (for example, 3D graphics adapters)
    • Require nonstandard kernel module access or use kernel modules not provided by the Linux on POWER operating system distribution
    • Do not use only the Intel® IA-32 instruction set architecture as defined by the 1997 Intel Architecture Software Developer's Manual consisting of Basic Architecture (Order number 243190), Instruction Set Reference Manual (Order number 243191), and the System Programming Guide (Order number 243192) dated 1997
    • Do not run correctly on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 starting with version 4.3 or Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES) 9 starting with version SP3 or Novell SLES 10
    • Use real-mode or 16-bit instructions
    • Are x86 Linux specific system administration or configuration tools.

Variable charges: The applicable processor-based one-time charge will be based on the group of the designated machine on which the program is licensed for use. If the program is designated to a processor in a group for which no charge is listed, the charge of the next higher group listed applies. For movement to a machine in a higher group, an upgrade charge equal to the difference in the then-current charges between the two groups will apply. For movement to a machine in a lower group, there will be no adjustment or refund of charges paid.
