The Ordering information section was revised to add no-charge features for Remove Keys/ePoEs for Transferred Software (5733-NKY).

At a glance

The Run Time User Enablement feature for DB2 Web Query for System i allows you to more effectively match user license costs to your specific environment. With this new feature, you can:

  • Define a single user license to be either a report author or a group of runtime users
  • Significantly reduce user licensing charges in situations where there is a large community of users who need to run reports — occasionally or often — but who do not need to create or edit reports
  • Use a named user license to either entitle an individual to create and edit reports or entitle a group of users who can only run reports in the domain associated with that group profile

For ordering, contact:

Your IBM representative, an IBM Business Partner, or IBM Americas Call Centers at 800-IBM-CALL (Reference: AE001).

Overview

The Run Time User Enablement feature for DB2® Web Query for System i™ gives you more flexibility in mapping user licenses to your specific environment, thereby optimizing the cost of user licenses. With this feature, you can redefine the existing named user licenses as report authors who can create or modify reports, or as a group of users that can run (but not create or modify) reports concurrently.

For those clients with a large number of runtime users, Run Time User Enablement makes DB2 Web Query both more cost-effective and more efficient when compared to the licensing scheme supported by the base product.

With the base DB2 Web Query product, every user is an individually named user to the server. By adding the Run Time Enablement feature, you can use a named user license to entitle an individual to create, update, and run reports, or to allow a group of runtime users to run reports concurrently, although such group users may not create or edit reports. Through parameterized reporting and the additional features such as the OLAP Module, many more end users can manipulate the views and selection criteria of reports without having to actually edit the report definition (unlike Query for iSeries™).

Description

A new feature for DB2 Web Query for System i gives you more flexibility in how users are licensed to use the product. The Run Time User Enablement feature can simplify administration and offer more choices in how you define a user to meet a variety of requirements and budget.

With this feature you specify how you define a user license to DB2 Web Query License Management. You can use a single user license to entitle a report author or a group of runtime users.

The report author is similar to the current named user licensing from DB2 Web Query. The report author is identified by name to DB2 Web Query License Management. The report author can create, modify, or run reports using any of the DB2 Web Query authoring tools.

The other new user license definition is a runtime group user. A single user license enables multiple i5/OS™ users to run (but not create or edit) DB2 Web Query reports. A user license is required for each set of i5/OS users that you want to group into logical subsets of reports available to your overall end-user community, and enables you to organize reports into domains specific to that group. In addition, with a single user license defined as a runtime group user, all users within that group can run reports.

You now have two choices for how you assign user licenses to DB2 Web Query. You can continue to use a named user licensing scheme with the base product. All named users can create, edit, and run reports with any of the authoring tools in DB2 Web Query.

With the Run Time User Enablement feature, you can mix and match user licenses based on how people use the product. You can support many more runtime only users with fewer user licenses.

This new feature is designed to benefit clients who have a small percentage of their overall end-user community that actually develops reports, and many more that need to run reports, but do not create or edit the report definition.

For example, you may have only five people in your IT department who actually create and modify reports, but 95 other employees who need to run those reports. These 95 employees are organized into five different departments: accounting, sales, marketing, human resources, and operations. Each of the five departments wants their reports organized by their department, and IT controls the reports that any individual in each department can run.

With the Run Time User Enablement feature, any user license can be defined as either a developer or a runtime group user. In this example, you can support the requirements with 10 user licenses: five defined as authors and named to DB2 Web Query, and five licenses (one for each department) would be used to entitle all the persons in the five departments to run any of the reports available to them in their domain concurrently, but not create or edit DB2 Web Query reports.

Product positioning

This feature is attractive if you have a higher percentage of users that just need to run reports, but do not need to create, edit, or modify them. With the enhanced function of DB2 Web Query, when compared to Query for i5/OS, this ratio of developers to runtime users widens significantly. In other words, with Query for i5/OS, many more end users need to actually alter reports to accommodate their reporting needs, but with DB2 Web Query, many users never have to edit reports and can become runtime only users.

If you have a large number of personnel with runtime only requirements, you can significantly reduce your costs of moving to DB2 Web Query from either Query for i5/OS or competitive reporting tools.
