Overview
Bottom rule

This week at the SAP SAPPHIRE NOW conference in Orlando, Florida, IBM announced availability of two Power Systems Solution Editions for SAP applications such as Business Warehouse powered by SAP HANA. IBM continues its long-standing partnership with SAP by offering these competitively priced POWER8 servers. They are preconfigured to support the deployment of SAP HANA, SAP's in-memory database. Unlike competitive appliances, these are "starter" configurations that can be further customized for specific uses or anticipated growth.

The IBM Solution Editions for SAP HANA enable thousands of current SAP on Power® customers to accelerate SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse environments with SAP HANA in-memory technology, without the need for a dedicated x86-based HANA infrastructure. The high performance of POWER8 systems, including 8-way multi-threading and high memory bandwidth, is ideal for extremely fast in-memory processing like with SAP HANA. This results in strong price/performance results, with low total cost of ownership (TCO) and less complexity than competitive platforms.

The IBM Solution Editions enable clients to start fast and, to use SAP's phrase, "run simple." The benefits to the customer begin with outstanding price/performance and extend to simplified IT infrastructure and consistent operations, resulting in lower TCO. IBM Solution Editions also provide the capacity to manage growth and the flexibility to integrate new functions, which helps minimize risks associated with adopting new business technologies.

The Solution Editions available now are for two popular sizes, a POWER8 S824 server and a POWER8 E870 server.

To be eligible for IBM Solutions Edition for SAP HANA:

  • The server must be a new purchase of a POWER8 server model that supports this Solution Edition
  • The customer must possess new or existing software licenses for SAP HANA to be run on this server
  • Proof of purchase of the software (for example, a copy of the invoice) must be provided to IBM on request

SAP HANA and Business Warehouse software are available through an SAP authorized sales representative.

Description
Bottom rule

Power Systems Solution Editions for SAP HANA provide starting configurations that allow customers to quickly deploy HANA and grow with their business needs while meeting SAP design criteria.

Power Systems servers are ideally suited to provide excellent SAP HANA performance and system reliability. The SAP HANA code running on the POWER architecture exploits the exceptional POWER8 memory bandwidth, SIMD parallelization, and simultaneous multithreading (SMT).

These solution edition offerings are available on the following POWER8 servers:

Server / Processor/ Starting memory Usage
S824 / 24 cores at 3.5 GHz / 256 GB Ideal for HANA database growing up to .5 TB , that is, 1 TB physical memory 1
E870 / 40 cores at 4.19 GHz / 1024 GB For HANA database starting at .5 TB with expected growth beyond 1 TB
E870 / 80 cores at 4.19 GHz / 2048 GB For HANA database starting at 1 TB with expected growth

Note: Effective SAP database size (containing business data) is typically half the memory capacity of the server.

1 HANA server memory, as defined in this Solution Edition, is typically two times the size of effective HANA database-size to allow for internal in-memory data processing.

SAP HANA can be deployed on any POWER8 processor-based server. Solution Editions for SAP HANA are simplified starting points for generating SAP HANA compatible configurations that can be tailored to meet customer requirements.

Solution Edition Eligibility

To be eligible for this offering:

  • The server must be a new purchase of a POWER8 server model that supports this Solution Edition
  • The customer must possess new or existing software licenses for SAP HANA to be run on this server
  • Proof of purchase of the software (for example, a copy of the invoice) must be provided to IBM on request

SAP HANA and Business Warehouse software are available through an SAP authorized sales representative.

IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.
