    DESCRIPTION

Full Screen Support: IBM 4680-4690 General Sales Application full screen support provides the capability to use a video display instead of a two-line alphanumeric (2X20) display at the register. END-USER PRODUCTIVITY - Improved Worker Productivity: By giving workers a simplified checkout environment with easy-to-follow, uncluttered presentation information, the ability to view an entire transaction as it is entered, the capability to void previous items easily while viewing the line item on the screen, the ability to provide messages in plain language, and the flexibility of having online help screens, individual productivity can be significantly enhanced. Item Record Expansion: The Item Record size has been expanded by thirteen (from 50 to 63) bytes to support new functions that may be required in the future. In addition, the end user now has the capability of adding space for their own use. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS - Enable New Applications: By providing the end user with the flexibility to keep additional data in the Item Record, new user applications can be implemented. The capability to include additional price fields, a cost field, and other retailer unique information in the Item Record could mean that enhanced markdown, gross margin, and other reports used for decision making could be produced. Additional Tenders/Foreign Currency: The maximum number of tender types supported has been increased from 15 to 36. Each tender type can be personalized fully and reported upon. There is support for foreign currencies (up to five). The application calculates the worth of foreign currencies against the base currency, and applies that amount to the balance due. There is a non-sales function to query the exchange rates. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT - Auditability Improvements: With the additional capability to track and record tender type information, auditability and control is enhanced. Better control of the unique requirements associated with each tender type is possible. BUSINESS SOLUTION - Enable Customer's Service Improvements: By giving the retailer the capability to accept tender for a sale in a foreign currency as well as the local currency, shopper service is improved. The retailer's customers can be less concerned about having to pay for goods in the local currency. Serviceability Aid: User exits in the base application of the General Sales Application can be enabled/disabled by function, or individually. SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT - IS Operations Productivity: Being able to enable/disable user exits by function or individually can improve problem determination. IS Operations' productivity could be increased since this capability could assist with isolating problems to IBM provided code or user provided code. Code Quality Improvements: The IBM 4680-4690 General Sales Application will strive for a much higher level of quality than the previous product. The goal is to have significantly fewer errors per shipped line of code as compared to 4680 GSA. BUSINESS SOLUTIONS - Enable Customer's Quality Improvements: Quality improvements in GSA should make our customers look better to their customers. Shoppers will experience fewer lane outages and reduced average checkout time. PRODUCT POSITIONING IBM 4680-4690 General Sales Application offers additional function to general merchandisers. This enhanced function improves the competitiveness of the product and provides capabilities frequently required by end users. IBM 4680-4690 General Sales Application has been translated for the following countries: Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Norway, Portugal, Spain, and Sweden. Further language versions can be announced later on APGHONE. EDUCATION SUPPORT The appropriate curriculum will be updated, as necessary, to include the enhancements in this announcement. Descriptions of all classroom and self-study courses are contained in the Catalog of IBM Education (G320-1244).
