IBM® System
Storagetm FlashCopy® Manager
V5.1 is a z/OS-based tool that is designed to significantly simplify the effort
required to configure and maintain full volume FlashCopy environments and to create
sets of jobs that can be used to operate on that environment. It supports FlashCopy operations
on IBM ESS, DS6000tm,
and DS8000tm subsystems.
The FlashCopy Manager
is designed to:
- Simplify the configuration generation process via an ISPF dialogue, with
both interactive and batch execution options. Batch execution of the configuration
and job build process is designed to eliminate the need for manual user actions,
when volser or storage group selection options are used and the FlashCopy configurations
change because of changes to volsers or storage groups.
- Use high-performance programs to operate on the FlashCopy configuration.
- Include status steps that allow for easy synchronization with other jobs
that depend on completion of a change of state of the FlashCopy environment.

on IBM System
Storage ESS, DS6000, and DS8000 subsystems.
FlashCopy Manager
V5.1 is designed to:
- Simplify the creation of full volume FlashCopy configurations and the development
of jobs used to manage those configurations.
- Support Basic and Incremental modes of operation.
- Provide support for establishing and updating FlashCopy relationships with and without
consistency.
- Support FlashCopy operations
using INBAND PPRC capability, to control FlashCopy operations in remote subsystems
and Global Mirror environments. (The use of INBAND PPRC functions requires
that FlashCopy Manager
be used with PPRC Manager-created configuration data sets.)
- Provide high-performance programs that reduce the long busy time associated
with creation or update of consistent FlashCopy relationships.
FlashCopy Manager
is designed to be a z/OS® tool supplement to the strategic IBM Business Continuity
automation tools z/OS TotalStorage® Productivity Centre (TPC) for Replication
and GDPS. Together with IBM System Storage PPRC Manager, it also provides
a basic z/OS IBM Copy
Services tool where the customer requirement is only for BC Tier 1 to 4 point-in-time z/OS recovery
(that is, recovery based on periodic point-in-time copy).
Both the FlashCopy Manager
and the PPRC Manager software program products use a common style of ISPF
interface, operate in a very similar fashion, and are designed to complement
each other. A user familiar with one will find the other easy to learn and
use.

FlashCopy Manager
is a z/OS-based tool that is designed to significantly simplify configuring
full volume FlashCopy environments
and creating sets of jobs that can be used to operate on that environment.
It supports FlashCopy operations
on IBM System
Storage ESS, DS6000, and DS8000 subsystems.
Applications of full volume FlashCopy span the range from a "stand-alone
process" to being embedded into a complex business process. FlashCopy technology
can be used to create a point-in-time copy of production data to be used to
recover from software data corruption (a "stand-alone process"). It can be
used create a copy of production data that will be subsequently transferred
to tape for some type of backup process or the data on the FlashCopy target
volumes might be transferred to a remote site using PPRC technology. Flash
Copy Manager-created jobs can be used to create FlashCopies of data from PPRC
secondary devices without requiring changes to the PPRC environment. FlashCopy is
a basic component of an IBM Global Mirror solution. FlashCopy Manager includes functions
that make it easy to implement any of these types of business solutions.
FlashCopy Manager
- important aspects
- FlashCopy Manager
uses an ISPF dialogue to define the FlashCopy configuration and to create
the jobs that can be used to operate on that environment.
- The selection criteria for FlashCopy Source devices and of Target
devices is done by specifying any combination of the following criteria:
- Device number ranges
- Volsers (with wildcard capability)
- Storage groups
- The ISPF dialogue can be executed as a batch job, which makes it possible
to include volsers and storage groups in the selection criteria and eliminate
the need for manual interaction when volsers and storage groups change over
time.
- Includes status steps that allow for easy synchronization with other
jobs that depend on completion of a change of state of the FlashCopy environment.
This capability is critical to implementing solutions that require synchronization
of other jobs with completion of background FlashCopies.
- Creating an exact copy of data on a FlashCopy target volume can create
IPL problems, due to duplicate volsers; FlashCopy Manager can eliminate this
type of problem in some types of business applications.
- FlashCopy Manager
can be used to FlashCopy to
volumes that are not in the IOGEN for the LPAR running the FlashCopy Manager.
This capability can be used to help installations with very large I/O configurations
that encounter device number limit problems.
- The FlashCopy Manager
job that is used to establish FlashCopy relationships can be imbedded
into a job stream that uses the IBM DB2® Cloning Tool or the Rocket Mainstar
Volume Conflict Rename (VCR) program, to create fully operational cloned DB2 environments.
In these environments, the FlashCopy target volumes may be either on-line or
offline.
Interoperability
FlashCopy Manager
V5.1 supports FlashCopy Level
2 capability of the following DASD-based subsystems:
- IBM 1750
(DS6000)
- IBM 2105
(ESS)
- IBM 2107
(DS8000)

The FlashCopy Manager
and PPRC Manager are tools designed to be supplementary to IBM strategic
Business Continuity automation offerings such as GDPS®, GDPS HyperSwaptm Manager, and other tools.
Such tools are typically used when specific services functions or configurations
are needed, that the strategic Business Continuity automation tools are not
designed to provide. Examples of these specialized needs include:
- Point-in-time FlashCopy performance enhancements
- Technology migrations from non-IBM copy services to IBM copy services
- Data centre migrations
- Disk subsystem reconfiguration, with associated data movement
- Ability to integrate and exploit IBM Advanced Copy Services into the production z/OS batch
environment, using existing z/OS job schedulers
- The situation where client requirement will only be for lower BC Tiers
1 to 4 disaster recovery (that is, periodic point-in-time copy is basis for
recovery)
FlashCopy Manager
is typically used when:
- As a supplement to z/OS TPC for Replication or GDPS, when a z/OS IBM Storage client requires significant IBM z/OS FlashCopy performance
enhancements over and above standard IBM TSO, DFSMStm, or ANTRQST invocation methods
- When, compared to non-IBM point-in-time disk copy services, one or more
of the following are needed:
- A tool to enable fast migration from non-IBM z/OS storage point-in-time copy, to IBM FlashCopy
- Significant z/OS Unit Control Block constraint relief in order to
enable the use of FlashCopy
- A set of unique z/OS tools to integrate and dynamically manage IBM FlashCopy into
a existing z/OS production
and batch environment
- A z/OS-familiar ISPF interface is be preferred for control and management
of IBM FlashCopy
- A tool that executes from z/OS, to control full volume FlashCopy for
z/Linux, z/VM®,
or z/TPF
- An affordable z/OS enablement tool, when the requirement is only for
lower criticality BC Tier 1-4 local point-in-time recovery (that is, periodic
point-in-time copy for disaster recovery)
FlashCopy Manager
and its companion program product, PPRC Manager, provide z/OS batch jobs
that are designed to supplement strategic IBM business continuity automation tools
such as z/OS TPC
for Replication and GDPS.

System
z Site definitions
- For the purposes of licensing IBM FlashCopy Manager and IBM PPRC Manager
only, "site" is defined as the standard distance capability of the System z Parallel
Sysplex. If the primary and secondary systems are within the standard
distance capability of the System z Parallel Sysplex (currently
100 km using the Server Timer Protocol), then this counts as one site, and
only one FlashCopy manager
license is required.
- If the primary and secondary systems in a System z Parallel Sysplex are installed
further apart than the defined standard distance capability, separate licenses
are required for each system installation of FlashCopy Manager.
Note that due to the one-time migrational usage and toolkit nature of these
program products, this definition of "site" for licensing purposes is specific
to IBM FlashCopy Manager
and IBM PPRC
Manager. This definition of "site" does not apply to the licensing for any
other IBM program
products.
ShopzSeries download and CBPDO options are available.

IBM has
transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help
you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a Web-enabled
solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the
service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed
to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem
resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate,
but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic
Services Agent.
The Electronic Services news page is a single Internet entry point that
replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services
and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources
for assistance in resolving technical problems.
The Electronic
Service Agenttm is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server.
It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic,
client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically
reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to
deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and
performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent
is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer
your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic
Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service
for your IBM server.
