Abstract

IBM Digital Process Automation offers a set of solutions that allows clients to adapt their operations to achieve a better client centricity. ODM, a key offering in the Digital Process Automation portfolio, allows businesses to automate and manage day-to-day operational decisions and get greater visibility and control over how those decisions are made in their organizations. It provides a comprehensive and easy-to-use platform that allows clients to capture, automate, and manage frequently occurring and repeatable business decisions. As a result, clients can:

  • Identify opportunities more easily.
  • Respond to market demands quickly.
  • Minimize risks.
  • Operate consistently.

The ODM offerings include Advanced, Standard, and Express editions that address the incremental requirements from basic rules to full decision management:

  • ODM Express provides an entry point that is designed for initial business rules projects.
  • ODM Standard allows clients to adapt decision logic of applications at the speed of business. Its dedicated, rule authoring and validation environments for business stakeholders gives visibility into control over and automation of point-in-time business decisions.
  • ODM Advanced builds on the capabilities of ODM Standard with Decision Server Insights that helps capture events, build context, and apply them to operational decisions in real time. Clients can detect situations as they occur to present risks or opportunities, and to enable the appropriate action.

ODM V8.9.1

New capabilities in IBM Operational Decision Manager (ODM) V8.9.1 include:

  • Decision Center
    • REST API to build, test, and deploy decision services
    • Many performance and scalability improvements, especially when working with large decision services
    • Improved selection of user groups in the LDAP connection
    • Enhanced Business Console interface for managing decision service snapshots and export-import
    • An updated support for IBM Cloud Product Insights, with improved metering and support for additional application servers

    • More detailed error messages at compilation and execution

    • Higher entity scalability, with offloading to databases

ODM V8.9.0

IBM Operational Decision Manager (ODM) V8.9 expands management capabilities for decision services in the Business Console, introduces new build automation system for DevOps and facilitates integration with API management products.

New capabilities in ODM V8.9 include:

  • Decision Center - Business Console:
    • Improved management of dynamic domains and resources
    • Comprehensive release and branch management with compare and merge functions that are designed for decision services
    • New filtering capabilities that make it easier to navigate or edit large decision tables
    • Support for custom scenario provider for decision service testing
  • Decision Server Rules:
    • Generation of OpenAPI compliant descriptions for easy publication and management of runtime decision services with API management solutions, such as IBM API Connect
    • A new, lightweight Build command, which is provided as a Maven plugin, to simplify decision service build automation and integration with DevOps infrastructure
    • Ability to utilize IBM Cloud Product Insights, an IBM Bluemix service, to monitor Decision Server and Decision Center product usage
    • A decision engine that is now selected as the default and recommended rule engine
    • Includes a faster and lighter sample server that is based on IBM WebSphere Liberty

Decision Server Insights benefits from improved performance, better resource usage, and new advanced connectivity properties.

ODM V8.9 also brings some simplification in the feature set, with the removal of announced deprecated modules and some outdated platforms.

ODM V8.8.0

IBM Operational Decision Manager (ODM) V8.8 provides additional capabilities that further enhance the business user experience, simplify platform operations, and enhance performance. Version 8.8 delivers:

  • Additional capabilities for Decision Server Insights include:
    • Shared aggregates that build on the capabilities of existing local aggregates to enable defining sophisticated aggregations across events that are associated with an entity that can be used across rule agents and multiple time periods.
    • The ability to define moving geometry attributes for representing the location of an entity that moves over time, such as a car, a plane, or a customer.
    • Additional capabilities for easier testing of solutions without programming with a business-friendly languages for initializing entities and validating results. It allows developers and subject matter experts to easily create and run tests that initialize entities, submit events and validates results for a solution.
    • Enhanced capabilities in the Insight Inspector for reviewing and analyzing the results of solution tests.
    • Increased developer productivity with usability enhancements in the Insight Designer.
    • Improved performance and resource consumption of solutions.
    • Support for additional local languages that allow users to define business rules and global aggregates in languages other than English.
  • Additional capabilities for Decision Center and Decision Server Rules include:
    • A ruleflow viewer in the Business Console, with task details and intuitive navigation between flows, tasks, and rules
    • A content explorer view in the Business Console
    • A decision operation editor in the Business Console
    • An administrative user interface for managing users, groups and simplified permissions
    • Extended support for rolling upgrade and cross version compatibility.
  • IBM PureApplication System pattern configuration for Decision Server Insights

ODM V8.7.1

IBM Operational Decision Manager (ODM) V8.7.1 provides capabilities that further enhance the business user experience, simplify platform operations, and enhance performance that Version V8.7.1 delivers:

  • Introduces the Decision Server Insights component for creating events-based solutions that build situation context and apply insight to optimize decisions at the time of interaction.
  • Empowers business users with the autonomy to validate policy updates and predict the impact of changes with end-to-end simulation capabilities.
  • Includes restructured ODM Decision Server offerings to facilitate a graduated adoption of decision management with Express, Standard, and Advanced editions.

ODM V8.6

IBM Operational Decision Manager (ODM) V8.6 delivers enhanced capabilities plus additional deployment options:

  • Delivers a unit of rule management, the decision service, that enables governed rule deployment by business and IT participants from within the Business Console.
  • Allows business users to verify and validate rule changes by defining and running test suites inside the Business Console.
  • Offers greater deployment opportunities with additional support for:

ODM V8.5.1

ODM V8.5.1 delivers enhanced capabilities plus offers a several licensing option:

  • Simplified updates of IBM Decision Center with a progressive migration tool enabling migration of Decision Center content on a per project basis
  • Improved usability of the Decision Governance Framework
  • Greater deployment opportunities with:
    • Support for IBM WebSphere Application Server V8.5.5
    • Support for Oracle WebLogic Server 12c
    • Availability of the Business Console on all supported application servers

ODM V8.5

ODM V8.5 delivers enhanced capabilities:

  • Comprehensive change management and governance with the Decision Governance Framework, a ready-to-use, prescriptive approach for both large enterprises and small and medium businesses
  • Remote access to business rules with integration options that include mobile functionality
  • Express version of the product for robust operational decision management at a low entry price

Description

ODM V8.9.1

The ability to effectively automate decision making within and across business systems helps maximize organizational efficiency. This helps increase employee productivity, and improve the quality and consistency of operational decisions that are made repeatedly in the course of the business day.

New capabilities in ODM V8.9.1 include:

  • Decision Center
    • A REST API to build, test, and deploy decision services.
    • Many performance and scalability improvements, especially when working with large decision services.
    • Improved selection of user groups in the LDAP connection.
    • An administrator can specify a filter expression in the connection settings to select groups.
    • An enhanced Business Console interface for managing decision service snapshots, with the ability to sort them.
    • Ability to export, import, and delete decision services that are integrated into the Business Console.
  • Updated support for IBM Cloud Product Insights
    • Improved metering with support for grouping and aggregates. Metrics can be grouped by applications. Metrics on number of artifacts are now properly handled for clustered environments.
    • Support for additional application servers that include IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment V8.5.5 and Apache Tomcat 8.
  • Decision Server Rules
    • More detailed error messages at compilation and execution
  • Decision Server Insights
    • Higher entity scalability, with offloading to database.
    • Reliability improvements, with internal component upgrades.

ODM V8.9.1 is also a maintenance release for ODM V8.9.0 and therefore, it is fully compatible with ODM V8.9.0.x and should be applied as soon as possible.

In addition, ODM V8.9.1 includes:

  • Support for Oracle WebLogic 12.2.1 in Decision Server Rules and Decision Center
  • New and updated samples and tutorials

In parallel with the delivery of ODM V8.9.1, public files to facilitate the creation and deployment of ODM images on Docker are available and updated in the GitHub repository . Contributions describing ODM deployment through Kubernetes are also available at Github .

ODM V8.9.1 consists of several orderable products, which together, form a comprehensive platform for the management and execution of business rules and business events:

  • Decision Center V8.9.1

    Provides an integrated repository and management components for line-of-business, subject-matter experts to directly participate in the definition and governance of rules-based, decision logic. Through the capabilities of Decision Center, it includes the Business Console, business and IT functions can work collaboratively to align the entire organization in the implementation of automated decisions and to accelerate the maintenance lifecycle as they evolve based on new external and internal requirements.

  • Decision Center Express V8.9.1

    Provides a low-cost, entry point for businesses to get started with decision definition and governance.

  • Decision Server Advanced V8.9.1

    Extends the standard ODM capabilities and components in Decision Server Advanced with Decision Server Insights and the Insights Designer. These additional components enable the building of solutions that enable the detection of actionable business situations and take appropriate action at the time of interaction.

  • Decision Server Standard V8.9,1

    Provides specific runtime and development components that are designed to automate and manage decision logic that is based on business rules.

  • Decision Server Express V8.9,1

    Provides a low-cost, entry point for businesses to get started with decision-management application development.

  • Decision Server Rules Edition for Integration Bus V8.5

    Decision Server Rules Edition for Integration Bus remains at Version 8.5. It is an entitlement-only package that extends licensing to deliver ODM integration with the IBM Integration Bus offering.
