With version 11.7, InfoSphere Information Server supports hybrid Hadoop and massively parallel processor (MPP) cluster architecture for unique ways to balance integration workloads between your Hadoop data lake and a stand-alone engine cluster, minimizing data movements while using InfoSphere Information Server resources more effectively.

The new browser-based DataStage Flow Designer is geared for data engineers, but is versatile and accessible to all business users. This cognitive designer features an intuitive, modern, and security- rich browser-based interface. Users can access the DataStage Flow Designer and quickly address their data transformation or preparation needs, without having to rely on a Windows desktop environment.

Business users can benefit from a new collaborative user experience for Information Governance Catalog, which offers improved user customization and personalization capabilities. Additionally, business users gain an enriched search experience powered through a knowledge graph that provides greater insight and visibility across information when searching or exploring data and its usage, as well as enhanced collaboration and dashboards.

New features for InfoSphere Information Server common components

InfoSphere Information Server delivers common platform services (such as connectivity services, administration services, and deployment services) to support its data integration, data quality, and governance capabilities.

InfoSphere Information Server V11.7 features the following common platform enhancements.

Enhanced metadata import

  • An enhanced metadata import capability for Hadoop Distributed File System metadata.
  • Increased security for metadata import.

New and enhanced connectivity for selected data sources

  • New connector for Apache HBase
  • Enhanced Cassandra support
  • Certification of Amazon Elastic MapReduce (EMR)
  • Enhanced Kafka connector support
  • Enhanced Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) support through File connector
  • Security enhancements:
    • Transport Layer Security (TLS) support for Kafka
    • Keytab localization for Kafka and HBase
    • Proxy support for Amazon Web Services Simple Storage Service (AWS S3)

Hybrid Hadoop and MPP architecture

This feature enables data integration, data cleansing, and data profiling and analysis workloads to run on a combined Hadoop and MPP cluster through a single head node. It enables users to balance workloads to either run natively on Hadoop or run on a set of stand- alone engine compute nodes. This type of architecture provides for optimized scalability and flexibility.

Hadoop version currency and certification

  • InfoSphere Information Server supports the following Hadoop distributions: HortonWorks Data Platform (HDP), Cloudera Distributed Hadoop (CDH), IBM BigInsights, and MapR
  • Hadoop support is for reading and writing of data as well as running of workload when the Information Server engine tier runs under Hadoop/Yarn:
    • HDP 2.5 and 2.6.x, CDH V5.11 and V5.12, IBM BigInsights V4.2.x, and MapR V5.2

Data integration improvements

In addition to an improved and streamlined user experience, the new browser-based DataStage Flow Designer can increase productivity with features such as:

  • Automatic schema propagation. When a change is made to a DataStage job, the designer automatically propagates the metadata to subsequent stages in the flow, saving the time that would be used to check each stage in the job flow individually.
  • Highlighted compile errors. The new DataStage Flow Designer highlights all compile errors, enabling users to see the errors with a quick hover over each stage, and immediately fix multiple problems before re-compiling.
  • Powerful type ahead search. Quickly find any job or project asset through built-in search navigation.
  • Quick tours. Users can easily learn and familiarize themselves through the product quick tours that are accessible on each dashboard.
  • Compatibility with earlier versions. The new DataStage Flow Designer is compatible with earlier versions. Existing DataStage jobs will continue to work without migration and can be opened and expanded through an earlier version of the Windows-based DataStage/QualityStage Designer.

Information governance

  • Information Governance Catalog user experience Version 11.7 introduces an improved user experience to better support and enable users to search, explore, and benefit from information within the Information Governance Catalog. This release includes the capability to tailor the user experience according to user role or purpose, as well as collaborate and rank data.
  • Enterprise Search: This new knowledge graph based paradigm enables users to search graphically and visually, giving them greater insight and understanding of information across its usage or dependencies.
  • Monitoring dashboards : This set of dashboards enables a user or administrator to understand current statistics or metrics of the system, such as the number of informational or governance assets created, their application, the number of pending tasks, and so on.

Data analysis and quality

Automation rules. The automation rules can automatically apply data rule definitions and quality dimensions to data sets based on term assignments. Business users can graphically create automation rules using simple "If... Then" logic. This can be a great labor savings, eliminating manual procedures, and providing consistency for all columns that share the same term assignments.

Automated discovery. This capability enables the discovery and analysis of all data from a data connection in one click providing easy and fast analysis of hundreds or thousands of data sets. Depending on your configurations, automated discovery can:

  • Register data sets and add metadata to a workspace in Information Analyzer
  • Use workspace default sampling settings
  • Run column analysis to identify properties such as data class, data type, format, and frequencies
  • Run quality analysis to check for common dimensions of data quality and provide data quality scores for each column and overall score per data set
  • Complete automated business term assignment
  • Bind rules as prescribed by automation rules

As data stewards become increasingly responsible for improving the value of their data assets, they need capabilities to help them manage these new requirements. Data stewards are being asked to handle a diverse set of scenarios, including:

  • Collaborating across multiple lines of business to build information policies supporting regulatory requirements.
  • Assessing the cost of poor data quality and managing such data quality issues to closure.
  • Engaging subject matter experts through business processes to review and approve corporate glossary changes.

    IBM is introducing additional capabilities to help data stewards tackle these governance challenges through a new user experience named Stewardship Center. The Stewardship Center features are built upon IBM's market-leading business process management software that is now included in select information integration and governance offerings. IBM customers can take advantage of prebuilt governance workflows that integrate into both existing and newly supplied data quality and information governance capabilities. Organizations can then further extend and customize these workflows as they need to engage the subject matter experts across their lines of business.

The Information Management division releases additional capabilities to help Data Stewards manage governance workflow added to IBM InfoSphere Information Server.

InfoSphere Information Server licensing metrics updates for selected products

Effective July 24, 2014, select IBM InfoSphere Information Server products will be offered under a new set of prices and pricing metrics that deliver greater value and flexibility to IBM clients.

Changes are made to the following metrics:

  • Removal of authorized user metric: Clients no longer need to specifically entitle users via a separate authorized user requirement in addition to the PVU metric. Organizations now have the right to use the software with an unlimited number of users under the PVU licensing model.
  • Simplification of PVU counting rules: Clients now count and entitle the largest of either the engine or service tier, rather than counting both the engine and server tier. This change gives clients more flexibility in the deployment topology of the software without requiring additional entitlement in many cases.

The following products are affected by this change:

  • The components within the IBM InfoSphere Information Server Packages offering (5725-G05):
    • InfoSphere Information Server Enterprise Edition
    • InfoSphere Information Server for Data Integration
    • InfoSphere Information Server for Data Quality
    • InfoSphere Information Governance Catalog

InfoSphere Information Server V11.5 delivers features that support agile integration, business-driven governance, and sustainable data quality to help you improve productivity, performance, and time to value.

InfoSphere Information Server V11.5 delivers the following capabilities:

Better big data, faster

InfoSphere Information Server V11.5 now includes InfoSphere BigInsights to enable a fast, cost-effective, and scalable big data integration approach. IBM is the first vendor to deliver a market- leading data integration platform together with the analytics power of a fully supported Hadoop distribution.

Using end-to-end IBM capabilities, you can shift ETL and data integration workloads into a Hadoop infrastructure that is capable of simultaneously handling analytics, as well as the staging, preparation, and transformation of data while using the same simple design interface developers leverage for all other data integration patterns. InfoSphere Information Server manages the ingesting, mapping, metadata, quality, and so on, while data scientists and business users can immediately begin exploring and analyzing the landing zone data through InfoSphere BigInsights' intuitive BigSheets interface. Additionally, BigSheets allows users to visualize both traditional and new data types, such as JSON, that InfoSphere Information Server has seeded into Hadoop. Most importantly, data governance is built right into the platform when using InfoSphere Information Server with InfoSphere BigInsights.

Also in InfoSphere Information Server V11.5, InfoSphere Data Click supports quick and easy loading data into and moving data out of Hadoop distributions. As part of these processes, InfoSphere Data Click registers the metadata into HCatalog so that it is available to be consumed by other Hadoop tools, including BigSQL, Hive, and others.

InfoSphere Information Governance Catalog

In this release, InfoSphere Business Information Exchange has been renamed to InfoSphere Information Governance Catalog.

InfoSphere Information Governance Catalog V11.5 offers a one-stop shop where any user can search for and find information sources that are meaningful for delivering real business value. This benefit derives from the catalog's seamless user experience for the creation, monitoring, and publishing of business-critical metadata that adds context and relevance to information in the "data lake". Business and IT users can both collaborate and share insight about information sources, thereby speeding the time to value for any project that requires governed and trusted data - big data analytics, data warehousing, master data management, and many others

InfoSphere Information Governance Catalog includes the following features:

  • Comprehensive data source search: Users can enter search for any type of data source -- tables, files, cloud structures, and more - or search based on business terms and policies and then drill into the related data sources. The flexibility of this method helps users find candidate data sources quickly and then explore the rich detail about those sources to confidently select the most relevant data for their business purpose.
  • Integrated UI for business and technical metadata: The governance catalog displays all technical and business metadata - terms, policies and lineage, queries, and so on - for enterprise data sources. By connecting between the full-featured business glossary capabilities and the metadata repository, users can understand the proper context of data.
  • Collections to support teaming: Collections are groups of metadata objects that can be created by any catalog user for the purpose of collaborating around a set of content with other users. These collections can be associated with business terms, stewards, and labels to offer context to the group of assets. The creator of a collection can designate which users may view and edit the collection. Users who want to curate or refine the data sources in the collection can also launch directly into InfoSphere Data Click, which can copy the information from these data sources into the managed data lake.
  • the lineage infrastructure: The graphical Lineage Viewer and lineage composer service has massively improved scalability and performance. Additionally, the user interface now uses HTML 5 to enable access of lineage information from Apple iPhones, iPads, and other mobile devices.
  • Operational metadata optimization: This feature uses a new data flow model to efficiently process operational metadata from tens of thousands of complex data integration activities per day.

Sustainable data quality

To accelerate the ability for enterprises to deliver high-quality, trusted data as part of data governance programs, InfoSphere Information Server V11.5 has been enhanced to include the following features:

  • Governance Dashboard: The InfoSphere Information Governance Dashboard and its companion SQLViews (a fully described query layer to key metadata) are now included as part of the integrated Information Server installer. Reports have been expanded to include analysis of critical business elements that lack a data steward owner. Additionally, Information Server now includes entitlement to IBM Cognos BI components to support the organizational rollout of your data governance program to both IT and line-of- business users.
  • Matching stewardship: "Clerical pairs" ( records that are close matches, but require review) are now available in the Data Quality Console. Records are displayed in an intuitive format to facilitate investigation of the source data elements and related match scores.
  • Enhanced suite productivity: Information Analyzer now uses the data connections and imported metadata from the Metadata Asset Manager (IMAM) components and no longer requires a discrete metadata import activity. The Data Rule stage (for use within the job designer), is also enhanced with a drag-and-drop development experience.
  • Performance optimizations: This feature includes faster algorithms for multi-column primary key detection, the ability to take full advantage of parallelism in column analysis, bulk-load write to the analysis database, and optimized client/server communication to reduce network traffic.
  • Operational quality rules: Information Server now includes prebuilt data rules that introspect Operational Metadata to help operations teams monitor how the data integration platform is meeting the service level agreements and best practices of the organization.
  • Connectivity expansion: Information Analyzer can now take advantage of native Netezza connectivity mechanisms for data profiling and rule analysis.

Agile data integration

Wherever your information resides, InfoSphere Information Server V11.5 helps you integrate it quickly and flexibly. InfoSphere Information Server V11.5 includes the following features that support agile integration:

  • Data Integration for cloud environments: As part of V11.5, InfoSphere Information Server delivers quick and easy data integration for cloud environments. When running on premise, InfoSphere Information Server can enable direct integration with Amazon S3 to load data into the cloud. After data is integrated within S3, it can also be picked up by other cloud database technologies.

    InfoSphere Information Server V11.5 also includes a Hierarchical Stage (renamed and enhanced from "XML Stage"), which supports interaction with REST APIs, enabling integration support for XML and JSON messages. By delivering REST-based connectivity, InfoSphere Information Server is now able to support distributed Database as a Service (DBaaS) offerings such as IBM Cloudant, as well as other on- premise and off-premise solutions that offer REST-based interaction.

    Also included is the availability of InfoSphere Information Server function instantly provisioned on the cloud. Organizations that want to extend their enterprise infrastructure into the cloud to speed time to value can now deploy end-to-end InfoSphere Information Server data integration, data quality, and data governance capabilities in a matter of minutes. This fast, simple provisioning process represents a tremendous gain over traditional hardware acquisition and configuration cycles. IBM's cloud-hosted information integration platform is delivered through IBM's PureApplication Service on SoftLayer, which provides simple provisioning and configuration of IBM software within a public cloud environment. IBM has taken a holistic approach to cloud-hosted environments, so the InfoSphere Information Server platform can be combined with other software technologies that are also required to deliver a broader end-to-end solution. As part of this announcement, the InfoSphere Information Server capabilities are being delivered through InfoSphere Information Server Enterprise Hypervisor Edition V9.1, which was first announced in October 2012.

  • Deeper integration for Master Data Management projects: InfoSphere Master Data Management (MDM) is the most complete, proven, and powerful MDM solution with collaborative and operational capabilities. InfoSphere MDM manages master data for single or multiple domains (customers, patients, citizens, suppliers, locations, products, services offerings, accounts, and more) for improving application and business process effectiveness.

    With V11.5, InfoSphere Information Server now delivers an MDM Integration Stage, enabling you to easily use InfoSphere Information Server to load data into and extract data out of InfoSphere MDM. With MDM Integration Stage you can include MDM data within your data integration flows and load domain data (such as customer, partner, supplier, member, and product, data) directly to the MDM system. You can benefit from peak scale and performance by using bulk API loading to achieve the best performance. When combined with Information Server's data quality capabilities, organizations can standardize data before loading it into MDM, which should increase matching accuracy and better support your 360 degree views. Lastly, the MDM Integration Stage is supported by a metadata-driven design: This means that the metadata captured by the MDM Integration Stage will align with the MDM data data model, enabling multiple segments of data to be sent in a single request.

  • Agile, self-service data provisioning and governance in a just few clicks:

    While organizations strive to unlock the next generation of analytics, they are faced with the challenge of giving a broader set of users access to information. Business analysts, data scientists, and business intelligence developers need to get information faster than traditional analytics cycles allow. Because of the depth of skill required, the information provisioning process has previously been left to technically-skilled ETL engineers. Organizations need a better, more agile paradigm for self-service data integration.

    InfoSphere Data Click, a feature that is delivered as part of InfoSphere Information Server, streamlines processes by enabling novice or line-of-business users to easily retrieve data and populate new systems. An intuitive user interface presents simple choices for users to select, eliminating the need to write any code or create data flow mappings. In fact, InfoSphere Data Click can enable a user to move thousands of tables or load a data mart with a few simple clicks. It then automatically registers the design and operational metadata to metadata to support built-in governance.

    InfoSphere Data Click delivers broad connectivity, helping improve the timeliness of many different types of environments including big data landing zones, data warehouses, and cloud environments. InfoSphere Data Click speeds up time to value, increases business agility and lowers costs by shrinking the time required to complete tasks from days or weeks to minutes or hours.

    InfoSphere Data Click delivers the following capabilities as part of V11.5:

    • Even more simplified usability, including a home screen for creating as well as monitoring activities, a web-based and streamlined way to create and run activities, and enhanced monitoring, including links to the Operations Consoles to drill down into more monitoring detail.
    • Catalog integration: Users can now search for information through the metadata available in InfoSphere Information Server Governance Catalog and launch directly into Data Click to act on integrating that data, for faster time to value.
    • Integration with cloud environments: As part of an exciting enhancement, InfoSphere Information Server now offers direct connectivity into Amazon Web Services (AWS), including connectivity to (and from) Amazon S3.
    • Enhanced big data support: InfoSphere Data Click now delivers native high-speed load to move data into InfoSphere BigInsights: Once data is in the InfoSphere Big Insights distribution, users can perform advanced analytics on data. InfoSphere Data Click also enables access to read data out of Hadoop distributions, via BigSQL or through other JDBC-based methods, such as Hive and HBase.
    • Relational database connector expansion: InfoSphere Data Click can now use JDBC connectivity, as well as native Oracle and DB2 connectivity, to move data from more sources and to move it more quickly.
  • Native Greenplum connectivity: Use the Greenplum connector to access Greenplum databases and perform operations. You can use the Greenplum connector stages in your jobs to read data from Greenplum databases, write data to Greenplum databases, or look up data in the contexts of those jobs. You can also import metadata from Greenplum databases by using InfoSphere Metadata Asset Manager (IMAM).

InfoSphere Information Server common platform enhancements:

InfoSphere Information Server delivers common platform services (such as connectivity services, administration services, and deployment services) to support its data integration, data quality, and data governance capabilities. As part of InfoSphere Information Server V11.5, the following common platform enhancements have been made:

  • Enhanced security: IBM continues to meet the demand for security by delivering the following features:
    • Single sign-on: InfoSphere Information Server browser- based clients now support single sign-on, so that clients who authenticate within one of the interfaces can more seamlessly interact across other user interfaces.
    • SSL communication: InfoSphere Information Server now uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) to enable communication security for all client interfaces.
    • Stronger encryption: In this release, InfoSphere Information Server delivers RSA 2048 and SHA-512 as the default encryption mechanisms.
    • Cell sharing: The InfoSphere Information Server platform now takes full advantage of the WebSphere Application Server standard security domain. As such, it can now be deployed into an existing cell managed by a secured deployment manager without disrupting existing profiles and applications already deployed in that cell.
  • Lighter-weight services tier: In Version 11.5, InfoSphere Information Server offers the option to install either WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment (for highly available services tier configurations) or WebSphere Application Server Liberty Profile, a fast-to-start, dynamic application server runtime environment for the services tier. Usage of the Liberty Profile decreases time during installation and feature pack cycles and lowers overall system resource usage costs.

In addition, the increased scalability and the ability to leverage the latest in server technology helps deliver increased performance of backup and recovery processes.
