Description

Cisco MDS 9706 Multilayer Director addresses the requirements of large virtualized data center storage environments. It delivers uncompromising availability, security, scalability, ease of management, and transparent integration of new technologies for extremely flexible data center SAN solutions. It shares the same operating system and management interface as other Cisco data center switches, enabling you to transparently deploy unified fabrics with Fibre Channel and FCoE connectivity for low total cost of ownership.

The MDS 9706 has been designed to provide:

  • Lower total cost of ownership with SAN consolidation: MDS 9706 lets you easily consolidate data assets into fewer, larger, and more manageable SANs to reduce hardware footprint and associated capital and operational expenses.
  • Scalable expansion with outstanding investment protection: MDS 9706 is designed to make optimal use of valuable data center floor space. It allows up to four MDS 9706 Directors per standard 7-foot rack (42RU). A smaller footprint makes it an excellent candidate for deployment in smaller storage networks, as well as pod-based converged data center infrastructure solutions for the cloud.
  • Enterprise-class availability: MDS 9706 was designed for high availability from the beginning. In addition to meeting the basic requirements of nondisruptive software upgrades and redundancy of all critical hardware components, the MDS 9706 software architecture offers outstanding availability. It provides redundancy on all major hardware components, such as power supplies and the supervisor and fabric modules. The Cisco MDS 9700 Series Supervisor Module automatically restarts failed processes, making the MDS 9706 exceptionally robust. In the rare event that a supervisor module is reset, complete synchronization between the active and standby supervisor modules helps ensure stateful failover with no disruption of traffic.
  • Business transformation with enterprise cloud deployment Enterprise clouds provide organizations with elastic computing and network capabilities, enabling IT departments to scale resources up or down as needed in a quick and cost-efficient manner. MDS 9706 delivers outstanding scalability with the following features for enterprise cloud deployments:
    • Multihop FCoE to provision storage in a multiprotocol unified fabric
    • Robust security for multitenant cloud applications
    • Predictable performance to meet stringent service-level agreements (SLAs)
    • Resilient connectivity for an always-on cloud infrastructure
    • Advanced traffic management capabilities, such as quality of service, to rapidly and cost-efficiently allocate network capabilities to cloud applications
    • Data Center Network Manager Advanced for SAN (DCNM)
  • Convergence with multihop FCoE: MDS 9706 offers an extensive security framework to protect highly sensitive data crossing today's enterprise storage networks. It employs intelligent packet inspection at the port level, including the application of ACLs for hardware enforcement of zones, VSANs, and advanced port-security features.

The following optional licensed activation features are available for the Cisco MDS 9706 Multilayer Director for IBM System Storage:

MDS 9700 Enterprise Package (#7610): The Cisco MDS 9700 Enterprise Package is designed to provide enhanced security and management features bundled for convenience and added flexibility. With this license, up to 4095 buffer credits can be allocated to an individual port, enabling full link bandwidth over long distances with no degradation in link utilization. Some of the functions enabled with this feature are VSAN-based access control, IP security, fabric binding, and VSAN routing.

MDS 9700 DCNM SAN Advanced Edition (#7611): MDS 9700 DCNM is an intuitive application that simplifies management across multiple switches and fabrics. Focused on supporting efficient operations and management of VM-aware fabrics, it delivers a robust framework and rich feature set that meets the routing, switching, and storage administration needs of present and future virtualized data centers. MDS 9700 DCNM streamlines provisioning of the unified fabric and proactively monitors the SAN components. MDS 9706 DCNM SAN Advanced Edition (#7611) is licensed for each MDS 9706 (9710-E06).

The MDS 9706 scales up to 192 ports of 16-Gbps Fibre Channel or 10-Gbps FCoE ports per chassis.

Cisco MDS 9706 Multilayer Director for IBM System Storage addresses the stringent requirements of large virtualized data center storage environments. It delivers uncompromising availability, security, scalability, ease of management, and transparent integration of new technologies for extremely flexible data center SAN solutions. It shares the same operating system and management interface with other Cisco data center switches. MDS 9706 lets you transparently deploy unified fabrics with Fibre Channel, and FCoE connectivity for low TCO.

Using Cisco MDS 9700 family switching modules, the MDS 9706 supports up to 192 ports in a 6-slot modular chassis, with up to 768 ports in a single rack. You can configure ports as Fibre Channel (2/4/8-Gbps, 4/8/16-Gbps, or 10-Gbps), FCoE (10-Gbps), or a mix of both Fibre Channel and FCoE. The MDS 9706 supports the same Fibre Channel and FCoE switching modules as the Cisco MDS 9710 director for a high degree of system commonality. Designed to grow with your storage environment, the MDS 9706 provides smooth migration, common sparing, and outstanding investment protection.

The Cisco MDS 9706 (9710-E06) is a nine-rack-unit chassis, which requires a minimum of one and supports up to a maximum of four optional modules. With the #3648 48-port 16 Gbps FC Module the MDS 9706 scales from 48 to 192 ports of Fibre Channel switching at 16 Gbps speed. It is capable of auto-negotiation to 2, 4, 8, and 16 Gbps speeds for servers and storage components.

The base model includes three Fabric-1 and two Supervisor-1 modules. The base model ships with three fan trays and four 3000 W ac power supplies. The 9710-E06 system has front-to-back airflow and it is rack mountable in standard 19-inch EIA rack. To assure installability and serviceability in non-IBM industry-standard racks, review the installation planning information for any product-specific installation requirements.

The 9710-E06 ships with an accessory tray including rack kit, ESD wrist strap, SFP extractor, Cisco media kit CD, and Hazardous substances document.

To meet the needs of all users, the MDS 9710 provides three principal modes of management: the Cisco MDS 9000 Family CLI, Cisco DCNM, and integration with third-party storage management tools. On the front of the unit, there are three connections (one RJ45 Console, one Ethernet RJ45, and two USB 2.0 ports) providing management interface.

Cisco MDS 9706 Multilayer Director for IBM System Storage

Transceivers Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP or SFP+)

The Cisco MDS 9706 Multilayer Director for IBM System Storage is enhanced with a number of selectable transceivers.

All fiber channel switching modules exclude separately orderable optics. Initial Orders of FC Switching Modules require one third of the ports populated with transceivers. Customers can populate with lower price 8 Gbps SFP's and replace these with 16 Gbps SFP's in the future.

Maximum Supported Distance for SFP Transceivers:
