Abstract

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 214 for machine types 2810 and 2812 with software version 11.5.1 is designed to help improve your total cost of ownership through cost-efficient and higher density 6 TB SEDs. XIV with 6 TB disk drives enables you to store 50 percent more data than 4 TB drives using the same space and power, delivering up to 12 percent lower price per TB and 33 percent lower power consumption per TB.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 with XIV software version 11.5.1 is certified with SMI-S 1.6 and offers an ENERGY STAR-certified environmental footprint for your data center.

The IBM 2810 is the XIV Storage System, designed to be a scalable enterprise storage system based upon a grid array of hardware components.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 214 for machine types 2810 and 2812 with software version 11.4.0 is designed to help improve your bottom line with world-class efficiency-based and price-performance through cost-efficient and higher density 4 TB drive systems strengthened by the 800 GB flash caching option.

Note: Effective February 1, 2014, the non-self-encrypting drives (SEDs) for IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 will no longer be available for newly manufactured machines. These features will continue to be available for customers looking to upgrade existing XIV Gen3 systems that utilize these non-SED drives. All new XIV Gen3 systems must be configured with SEDs, utilizing any one of the supported features for XIV Gen3 systems. All the drives used will be encryption enabled, even if the customer chooses not to activate encryption.

IBM will continue to support field upgrades (MES) for existing installed IBM XIV models 214 and 314 systems.

The IBM 2810 XIV Storage System Model 214 offers up to twelve 10GbE ports for connecting to iSCSI-attached hosts or twenty-two 1GbE ports, up to 15 CPUs providing ninety physical cores (180 logical cores using Intel Hyper-Threading technology), more energy-efficient hardware that can reduce power consumption by up to 16% compared to previous models, up to 24 x 8Gb FC ports for host connectivity, up to 6 TB of SSD cache by using 400 GB drives, up to 243 TB of useable capacity, and up to 360 GB of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) cache.

Description

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 214 is designed to offer a performance boost for 6 TB SED-based systems. Customers can now choose to empower their systems with 6 TB SEDs to deploy large-scale clouds even more efficiently with tuning-free storage. XIV with 6 TB disk drives enables you to store 50 percent more data than 4 TB drives using the same space and power, delivering up to 12 percent lower price per TB and 33 percent lower power consumption per TB.

Exceptional rebuild speed: The XIV system can rebuild a 6 TB drive in about an hour on average, with minimal impact on system service. The exceptional speed results from performing the rebuild using all disks in the system simultaneously and rebuilding the written data only.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 and IBM XIV Cloud Storage for Service Providers are now ready for VMware Virtual Volumes (VVOL) which are designed to enable upcoming VMware vSphere environments to easily automate XIV provisioning, offload snapshots and cloning, and instantly reclaim space, all at the virtual-machine level. Systems will also benefit from XIV hotspot-free performance predictability and extreme capacity utilization, delivered efficiently through the "one-stop-shop" IBM Storage Integration Server.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 with XIV software version 11.5.1 is certified with SMI-S 1.6 support to help build dynamic, scalable, secure storage infrastructures and instant integration with Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2012.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 214 is designed to offer a performance boost for 4 TB drive based systems with an option for up to 12 TB flash caching to improve disk-to-cache ratio. Customers can now choose to empower their 4 TB systems with 800 GB flash caching per module (up to 12 TB per system), or with 400 GB flash caching per module (up to 6 TB per system) option, according to their business needs.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 with software version 11.4.0 is designed to enhance 4 TB drive based configurations strengthened by optional 800 GB flash drives.

XIV algorithms enhance the power of commodity flash drives to help deliver ultra-high cache performance to all system data. The new 800 GB flash caching option available for 4 TB systems supports top performance levels at a much higher density and an exceptionally low cost per TB.

Customers can optionally order 400 GB flash drives, allowing them to choose the best fit for their business objectives.

Extend productivity and data protection with new IBM Hyper-Scale Consistency

  • IBM scales XIV snapshot management out with the new Hyper-Scale Consistency, by coordinating concurrent snapshots of volumes that are spread across multiple XIV systems and belong to one application.
  • Implementation of an enhanced command line allows I/O operations of entire consistency groups to be stopped and resumed. When I/O is stopped, snapshots are taken near-instantly across all involved machines and consistency groups to help provide a crash-consistent data set for the application. I/O is then resumed across all involved machines.

Improve your compute cloud with XIV cloud standards and integration support

XIV is well-suited for cloud deployments. The grid design stripes data across all modules and spindles and incorporates data redundancy, resulting in consistent and predictable I/O performance that is always load balanced. XIV grid architecture also enables autonomous, and fast fault recovery. XIV architecture is designed to be space- efficient and supports space reclamation. To scale out, XIV supports IBM Hyper-Scale Mobility and HyperScale Consistency. To secure cloud storage, XIV data-at-rest encryption is implemented with AES 256-bit keys, and SEDs.     • The vSphere Web Client plug-in allows self-service provisioning and IBM-native storage visibility for VMware administrators using the vSphere Web Client. The vSphere Web Client plug-in is the successor of the stand-alone IBM Storage Management Console for VMware vCenter.
    • The revamped VASA Provider is the successor of the former stand- alone VASA Provider, allowing profile-based storage provisioning and automated storage placement for XIV.

  • Dynamically reclaim space with VMware ESXi v5.5 and Windows 2012 R2 space reclamation support, reducing thin provisioning risk and improving capacity efficiency and return on investment.
    • Deploy VMware 5.5 and Windows 2012 R2 with XIV support
    • XIV is certified to support new Windows Server 2012 R2 and VMware v5.5 hosts
  • XIV supports dynamic space reclamation through the implementation of several SCSI commands, among which UNMAP is required to support VMware and Microsoft environments. XIV now adds support for Windows Server 2012 R2 and VMware ESXi v5.5, in addition to existing certified space reclamation support for Windows Server 2012. For version 10.2.4 and later, XIV supports dynamic space reclamation with Symantec Storage Foundation and Redhat Enterprise Linux.
  • Quick-start synchronous mirroring with offline initialization flexibly swaps between synchronous and asynchronous mirroring.
  • Until now, XIV has supported offline initialization for asynchronous mirroring. With 11.4, IBM applies this capability to XIV synchronous mirrors:
    • Offline initialization establishes a faster initial replica of the master mirror volume on the slave system by locally using a recent replica onto the slave system, reducing the duration of online initialization across WAN lines and increasing operational flexibility
    • Customers can now swap between synchronous and asynchronous mirroring to address service-level and compliance needs, and reduce costs

Outstanding Exchange Solution Reviewed Program (ESRP) results for Microsoft Exchange 2013

  • Benefit with Microsoft Exchange 2013 architecture with the new ESRP-validated IBM XIV Storage solution featuring two 4 TB XIVs, which is designed to achieve a record 2 GB mailboxes to 120,000 users, at 0.16 IOPS per mailbox, 24 mailbox servers, while operating at 88% capacity utilization.

The IBM XIV Storage System series is an innovative, high-end, open disk system series designed to support business requirements for a highly available information infrastructure. IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 is designed to leverage the proven architecture to provide consistent, high performance, and high reliability with a low total cost of ownership. Several design factors contribute to this achievement:

Self-tuning and self-healing: XIV's virtualized architecture supports high system performance without manual tuning. The system can self-optimize automatically upon changes in the hardware configuration, such as the addition of modules or replacement of modules upon failure.

Ease of management: Ease of management that goes below the surface, with a virtualized architecture, highly intuitive GUI, and clever implementation of role-based management all add up to create a streamlined user experience with less administration.

High performance: A high-speed InfiniBand internal interconnect, load balancing, use of all system resources, innovative and massive caching, and CPU power combine to support high performance.

Enhanced connectivity: IBM XIV Gen3 offers multiple active/active IO interfaces with improved host connectivity with up to twenty-four 8Gbps FC ports, up to twelve 10GbE ports for connecting to iSCSI-attached hosts, or twenty-two 1Gbps Ethernet port.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 214 is designed to offer a performance boost for 6 TB SED-based systems. Customers can now choose to empower their systems with 6 TB SEDs to deploy large-scale clouds even more efficiently with tuning-free storage. XIV with 6 TB disk drives enables you to store 50 percent more data than 4 TB drives using the same space and power, delivering up to 12 percent lower price per TB and 33 percent lower power consumption per TB.

Exceptional rebuild speed: The XIV system can rebuild a 6 TB drive in about an hour on average, with minimal impact on system service. The exceptional speed results from performing the rebuild using all disks in the system simultaneously and rebuilding the written data only.

The IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 Model 214 is now able to scale even higher in a single rack footprint.

The XIV line of storage products continues to provide great ease-of-management and reliability.

The unique XIV architecture supports the use of high-density drives even for high-performance enterprise environments. The support of 3 TB SAS drives allows more than 50% greater capacity than the 2 TB drives and greater storage density per rack, which can help lower per-terabyte costs.

IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 with IBM XIV software version 11.2.0 Model 214 supports SSD as read cache.

The availability of SSD read caching brings an additional performance boost to IBM XIV Storage System Gen3. With SSD read caching, the Gen3 with software version 11.2.0 further strengthens its ability to provide consistent high performance and enterprise functionality for open system storage, along with low total cost of ownership and ease of use.

SSD read caching increases the effective amount of read cache available to the system, with an emphasis on a read cache for random I/O. Designated SSD drives on each module are intended to be up to 0.40 TB, providing increased performance with higher cache hits compared to disk drives.

Limitations

Intermixing of port bandwidth between 10 GbE and 1 Gb within the same system is not supported (mutually exclusive).

Partially populated IBM XIV Storage Systems Gen3 that are shipped from the factory with any of the raw capacity per drive options must continue to be populated with the same raw capacity per drive option.

Intermixing of any of these capacity options in a single XIV Storage System Gen3 frame is not allowed: 1 TB, 2 TB, 3 TB, 4 TB, or 6 TB.

Intermixing of 400 GB SSD, 800 GB SSD, or no SSD modules in a single XIV Storage System Gen3 frame is not allowed. 800 GB SSD is only available on 4 TB and 6 TB configurations.

Data-at-rest encryption and IBM Security Key Lifecycle Manager support are not available for China.

Hardware requirements

The 2810-214 and 2812-214 must have the 5639-YYB IBM XIV Storage Software for operation.

Software requirements

IBM XIV software version 11.5.1 (5639-YYB or 5639-YYC), or later, must have the IBM XIV Storage System Gen3 (Machine type 2810 or 2812) Model 214 for operation.

IBM XIV software version 11.5.1 (5639-YYB or 5639-YYC) supports attachment in multiple host operating system environments.

When activating CoD modules, ensure that there are remaining un- activated CoD modules to continue your participation in the program.

Any order that fully activates a CoD configuration and does NOT include additional un-activated CoD features will indicate the customer's desire to complete the CoD agreement and feature #030x must be removed from the machine's serial number in question.

At this point, non-SED drive CoD features #2027 and #2028 for 2 TB drives, 3 TB CoD features #2037 and #2038, and 4 TB CoD features #2043 and #2044, and for SED drive CoD features #2023 and #2024 for 2 TB SED drives, 3 TB SED CoD features #2033 and #2034, 4 TB SED CoD features #2043 and #2044, and 6 TB SED CoD features #2063 and #2064, for Model 214 (with 1 GbE modules) can no longer be ordered against this machine's serial number.
