Abstract

IBM Rational Method Composer is a flexible process management solution that includes both a powerful process authoring tool and an extensive library of reusable process and practice assets. Rational Method Composer tooling enables you to author, tailor, manage, and publish process descriptions. The process and practice libraries shipped with Rational Method Composer deliver best practice content that can be used as is, or tailored to meet the needs of your systems and software delivery teams.

Highlights

Rational Method Composer V7.5.3 optimizes the following selected integrated features:

  • Updated integration with IBM Rational Team Concert
    • Rational Method Composer now uses a consistent Eclipse platform with Rational Team Concert V6.0.x, the Eclipse Juno V4.2.2 platform.
    • The IBM Rational Jazz source control integration (embedded Rational Team Concert client) is updated to version 6.0.2, and supports all 6.0.2, or later, Rational Team Concert servers currently available.
  • Optimized desktop and mobile interfaces with improved navigation and modern design
    • The previously available skins have been renamed as "Classic," "Classic Compact," and "Classic Simple" to distinguish them from the new skin, which is called "RMC Simple."
    • This newer skin is based on Dojo 1.10.5, and offers the following features:
      • More intuitive interface design for the tree browser
      • Optional dropdown navigation menus.
      • Option to hide the tree browser and breadcrumbs
      • Improved interface design on mobile devices.
      • Support for Internet Explorer 11 and Firefox ESR 52
    • A search application (to support current browsers that do not support applets) replaces the search applet. The new application's advanced search dialog enables search by title, type of element, or tag.
  • Linux support
    • Due to limited market demand, Linux is not supported in this release.
  • Rational Method Composer libraries
    • This release includes the IBM Practices library and Rational Unified Process (RUP) configuration, but not the older RUP library.
    • Updated and additional method content is periodically published on IBM DeveloperWorks.

Rational Method Composer V7.5.2 enables enhanced interoperability with Jazz tools, simplified team process management, and a more flexible metamodel.

  • Creating user-defined method element types and adding custom attributes and relationships to standard SPEM types, giving you more flexibility in what can be modeled. You can now model RACI relationships, capture tool configuration data, and more.
  • Adding a Team Process UI perspective to the Rational Team Concert for Eclipse client to simplify viewing and tailoring the team's process description.
  • Generating Jazz process templates and automatically deploying them to a Jazz Team Server along with the published method guidance.
  • Updating Jazz process specifications in existing "in-flight" project areas to add new roles, work item types, and work item templates, based on and linked to the method content from Rational Method Composer.
  • Creating work items in an existing Jazz project area directly from a method element in Rational Method Composer. Each work item created in this manner includes a link to the relevant method guidance.
  • Using an updated search capability that improves performance and supports the new Java Plug-in architecture.

New practices and method configurations support Rational Solutions, including:

  • Collaborative Lifecycle Management for IT agility@scale Solution
  • Rational Solution for Systems and Software Engineering
  • Rational Aerospace Solution for DO-178B
  • Rational Automotive Solution for ISO-26262

Description

Rational Method Composer V7.5.2 simplifies team process management and unifies process management and enactment through improved interoperability with Rational Jazz products.

  • User-defined method element types, attributes, and relationships.

Rational Method Composer implements the Object Management Group Software and Systems Process Engineering Metamodel (OMG SPEM 2.0) specification. The SPEM specification defines standard element types (for example, role, work product, task, activity, work breakdown, and structure); attributes (for example, main description, brief description, and key considerations); and relationships (for example, performs, responsible for, and contributes).

With Rational Method Composer V7.5.2, you can extend the SPEM metamodel by adding your own element types or custom attributes and relationships to existing SPEM elements. For example, you can tailor responsible, accountable, consulted, informed (RACI) relationships between roles and tasks, which are used to model process requirements for separation of duties.

You can also capture tool-specific configuration data that you need to align methods and tools, such as the state transition tables that define the workflow of change requests in a change management tool.

  • Team Process UI perspective.

Select a base method from the list of available methods and navigate and view method elements; you can add, edit, or remove elements to meet project-specific needs.

Behind the scenes Method Composer manages these variants, making it is easy to identify and harvest changes made by successful teams.

  • Jazz process template generation.

You can configure a variety of process automation and enforcement tasks. These are all user-configurable for each project or team:

    • Work item types, including their state transitions tables, attributes, and editor presentations
    • Preconditions on user operations
    • Followup actions on user operations
    • Time lines with iteration and milestone definitions
    • Role definitions and role-based operation permissions

To reduce the time it takes to initiate a project, several process templates are provided out-of-the-box. Simply select the relevant template during project area creation and you have a good starting point that can be further customized as needed. Then select a method configuration and Create and Deploy Jazz Process Template. This adds the new process template to the selected Jazz server, making it available to create new project areas.

Project areas that you create using the new template include links back to the published process guidance that fully describes the process.

  • Update Jazz process specifications for in-flight projects.

Jazz process templates are very useful during project initiation. However, if you want to change the process in an existing in-flight project, you need to document your changes using the Jazz project area editor to make the corresponding changes to the Jazz process specification for that project area.

With the Rational Method Composer V7.5.2 Team Process UI perspective, you can update the process specification in a selected Jazz project area. You can create Jazz roles definitions, work item templates, work item types, and even new work items directly in an existing Jazz process area.

  • Enhanced work item template generation.

As in previous releases you can create Jazz work item templates from a work breakdown structure in Rational Method Composer. You can import these templates to a Jazz project area to create release plans, iteration plans, or an ad hoc set of tasks. Each work item includes the relevant relationships to other work items (parent/child and predecessor/successor) as well as links back to the published process guidance from Method Composer.

With Rational Method Composer V7.5.2, you can generate work item templates directly into an existing Jazz project area, eliminating time-consuming import/export steps.

  • Enhanced: Process assets.

The IBM Practices Library that is shipped with Rational Method Composer now contains more than 50 proven practices and several predefined end-to-end lifecycle processes.

    Method configurations include:

    • Collaborative Lifecycle Management for IT agility@scale Solution
    • Rational Solution for Systems and Software Engineering
    • Rational Aerospace Solution for DO-178B
    • Rational Automotive Solution for ISO-26262

Each of these method configurations contains all of the process assets you need to configure Rational tools and execute a project. Tool configuration assets, such as artifact and process templates, report templates, and convenience utilities to automate certain activities are included to align tool behavior and methods. Tool mentors that describe how to execute the method using Rational tools make adoption easy and accelerate the return on investment.

Each of these solutions can be used as is or tailored to meet your specific needs using Rational Method Composer.
