Cisco MDS 9513 for IBM System Storage Director

The flagship of the Cisco MDS 9500 Series, the Cisco MDS 9513 for IBM System Storage director is designed to elevate the standard for director-class switches. Providing high-availability, scalability, security, and management, the Cisco MDS 9513 is designed to allow you to deploy high-performance storage area networks (SANs) with a low total cost of ownership (TCO). Layering a set of intelligent features onto a high-performance, protocol-independent switch fabric, the Cisco MDS 9513 is designed to help address the requirements of large data center storage environments: supporting high availability, security, scalability, ease of management, and transparent integration of new technologies for flexible data center SAN solutions. Compatible with first and second generation Cisco MDS 9000 Family switching modules, the Cisco MDS 9513 is designed to provide advanced functionality and investment protection, allowing you to use several Cisco MDS 9000 Family switching modules in a highly scalable system.

Cisco MDS 9509 for IBM System Storage director

The Cisco MDS 9509 for IBM System Storage director is designed to bring advanced capability and investment protection to the director market. The Cisco MDS 9509 can provide up to 336 Fibre Channel ports in a 14 Rack Unit chassis.

Cisco MDS 9506 for IBM System Storage director

The Cisco MDS 9506 for IBM System Storage director can provide up to 192 Fibre Channel ports in a 7 Rack Unit chassis.

The Cisco MDS 9500 for IBM Systems Storage directors offer a common architecture with the following standard features:

The Cisco MDS 9513 (2054-E11) provides from 18 to 528 ports of Fibre Channel switching at 8 or 10 Gbps speed. It is capable of auto-negotiation to 8, 4 or 2 Gbps speeds for legacy servers and storage components.

The Cisco MDS 9509 (2054-E07) is a fourteen-rack-unit chassis, which requires a minimum of one and supports up to a maximum of seven optional switch modules supporting 18 to 336 Fibre channel ports per chassis.

The Cisco MDS 9506 (2054-E04) is a seven-rack-unit chassis with redundant power supplies, and requires selection of two Supervisor modules with at least one Line Card. The Model E04 is a multiprotocol-capable storage area network Director designed for the IT Data Center (with AC power supplies). The Model E04 supports up to a total of four Fibre Channel and/or IP Services Line Cards. A minimum of one Fibre Channel port card is required.

Limitations

There are configuration limitations when using Generation 1, 2, 3, and 4 line cards in a Cisco MDS 9000 Director. Please consult the User's for details of the configuration rules.

Port index availability

The Cisco MDS 9500 Directors are designed to operate with any combination of Cisco MDS 9000 modules. However, you should be aware of the maximum port availability your chassis can support. A port index is an internally assigned number that Cisco NXOS uses to switch data packets within the director or fabric switch. When the maximum number of port indexes is reached in a chassis, any modules remaining or added to the chassis will not boot up. Please consult the User's Guide on the details of Port Index rules.

Summary: Provides one Line Card with 4 Ports capable of 10Gbps which are intended for ISL links between Cisco MDS 9000 Directors and Switches.

All fibre channel 10Gbps Switching Modules exclude separately orderable optics, features #5040.

The Cisco MDS 9000 Family 4-Port 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module is designed to deliver attractive performance with 10 gigabit per second link bandwidth, 96 Gbps of aggregate bandwidth per module, and intelligence and advanced features required to make multilayer SANs a reality. Delivering over five times the effective link bandwidth of 2 Gbps Fibre Channel products, the Cisco 4-Port 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module includes hardware-enabled innovations can help improve performance, scalability, availability, security, and manageability of storage networks, resulting in increased utility and lower total cost.

The Cisco 4-Port 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module is designed to be hot-swappable and must be ordered with at least one hot-swappable, X2 form-factor pluggable, SC type interfaces. Individual ports can be configured with longwave X2 optical transceivers for connectivity up to 10 kilometers. Up to 250 buffer credits per port are supported for maximum extensibility without requiring additional licensing. With the optional Cisco Enterprise Package, up to 5,000 buffer credits can be allocated to an individual port, enabling full link bandwidth over thousands of kilometers with no degradation in link utilization. Ports can be configured to operate in the following modes: E port, F port, FL port, TE port, SD port, ST port, and B port.

Ultra-high per-port bandwidth makes the Cisco 4-port 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module well-suited for ISL attachment, both within the Data Center and between Data Centers across metro optical networks. When compared with ISL connections utilizing 2 Gbps Fibre Channel links, ISLs using Cisco 10 Gbps links can reduce ISL cabling cost by up to 80%.

With its multiprotocol capability, the 4-port 10 Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module integrates FICON protocol, FICON Control Unit Port (CUP) management, and switch cascading to enable mainframe connectivity. VSANs allow hardware-based separation of Fibre Channel and FICON traffic switched on a single physical SAN.

Summary: The Cisco MDS 9500 Mainframe Package provides a collection of advanced features to enable MDS 9000 operation in mainframe storage network applications. The Cisco Mainframe Package includes the following functions:
