Abstract

IBM CPLEX Optimizer for z/OS provides flexible, high-performance mathematical programming solvers for linear programming, mixed integer programming, quadratic programming, and quadratically-constrained programming problems. CPLEX Optimizer for z/OS includes interfaces in the C and C++ programming languages.

CPLEX Optimizer for z/OS V12.8 incorporates enhancements designed to address requirements in several domains, including:

  • Performance improvements across the model types that CPLEX supports
  • New modeling assistance in the form of warnings about suspicious data and modeling constructs
  • Records search information for CPLEX that reproduces exact algorithmic behavior

Description

CPLEX Optimizer for z/OS, V12.8 is designed to include the following new functionalities:

  • Significant performance increases for mixed integer programming and mixed integer quadratic program problem classes
    • Engine users benefit from speedups without changing a single line of code, simply by using the new libraries in their applications or through the IDE. A speedup is manifested when the user's model solves faster than previously.
  • New modeling assistance in the form of warnings about suspicious data and modeling constructs
    • With this warning feature switched on, CPLEX scans the model and attempts to identify various categories of problems that may have sources in inaccurate or unstable data, which may result in scalability or other numerical problems. Any problems discovered can then be dealt with by the user.
  • Records search information for CPLEX that reproduces exact algorithmic behavior
    • Users can record all the calls to the CPLEX APIs so this information can be shared with IBM in order to reproduce abnormal behavior.
  • Users are able to use a new call-back mechanism without degrading performance.

IBM CPLEX Optimizer for z/OS V12.7 includes the following functionalities:

  • Significant performance increases for MIP and MIQP problem classes
    • Engine users benefit from speed ups without changing a single line of code; simply using the new libraries in their applications or through the IDE. A speed up is manifested when the user's model solves faster than it did before.
  • Implementation of sophisticated Benders' decomposition algorithm
    • The technique known as "Benders' decomposition" is a popular solving method that can be applied to certain problems with a "hard" and "easy" part. Benders' decomposition can be implemented on top of CPLEX Optimizers by the user. But doing so requires a lot of work, and can be complex, error prone, and subject to relatively poor performance.
  • Tool to test variability of problems
    • The time taken to solve an optimization problem to a certain quality level can vary significantly, even in the presence of small changes to input data or in the abstract model. This is a property of all modern solvers. However, this property is not significantly understood and can lead to frustration during development when model developers may make model improvements based on limited data. The tool can help users to understand how much and to what extent variability impacts solving performance.
  • Modeling assistance in the form of warnings about suspicious data and modeling constructs
    • If this warning feature is switched on, CPLEX scans the model and tries to identify various categories of problems that may have sources in inaccurate or unstable data, which may result in scalability or other numerical problems. These problems have to be dealt with by the user; that is, no automatic model or data correction takes place.
