  • Performance: Cisco MDS 9710 offers industry-leading port densities of up to 384 16 Gb FC ports per chassis, 1.5 terabits per second (Tbps) FC performance per slot, up to 24 Tbps FC line rate, nonblocking system-level switching, unparalleled functionality with intelligent fabric services, virtual storage area networks (VSANs) for consolidating individual physical SAN islands while maintaining logical boundaries, and Inter-VSAN Routing (IVR) for sharing resources across VSANs.
  • Reliability: MDS 9710 is designed to provide an outstanding level of availability and reliability. MDS 9710 is a director class switch to enable redundancy on all major components including fabric modules. It provides Grid Redundancy on power supply and 1+1 redundant supervisors. Users can add an additional fabric card to enable N+1 Fabric Redundancy.
  • Flexibility: MDS 9710 is designed to combine nondisruptive software upgrades, stateful process restart and failover, and full redundancy of all major components for best-in-class availability. With up to 24 Tbps of FC system bandwidth and 384 2/4/8/16-Gbps Full Line Rate autosensing FC ports in a single chassis, Cisco MDS 9710 can scale to meet the requirements of the largest data center storage environments.

The Cisco MDS 9710 Multilayer Director is an enterprise-class SAN switch designed for deployment in large-scale storage networks to enable enterprise clouds and business transformation. Layering a comprehensive set of intelligent features onto a high-performance, protocol-independent switch fabric, Cisco MDS 9710 addresses the stringent requirements of large virtualized data center storage environments:

  • Uncompromising high availability, security, and scalability
  • Ease of management
  • Transparent integration of new technologies for extremely flexible data center SAN solutions

Sharing the same operating system and management interface with other Cisco data center switches, Cisco MDS 9710 enables seamless deployment of unified fabrics with high-performance FC connectivity to achieve low total cost of ownership.

The Cisco MDS 9710 was designed from the beginning for high availability. Beyond meeting the basic requirements of nondisruptive software upgrades and redundancy of all critical hardware components, the Cisco MDS 9710 software architecture offers an outstanding level of availability. The Cisco MDS 9700 Series Supervisor Modules automatically restart failed processes, making the Cisco MDS 9710 exceptionally robust. In the rare event that a supervisor module is reset, complete synchronization between the active and standby supervisor modules helps ensure stateful failover with no disruption to traffic.

High availability is implemented at the fabric level using robust and high-performance Inter-Switch Links (ISLs). PortChannel capability allows users to aggregate up to 16 physical links into one logical bundle. The bundle can consist of any speed-matched ports in the chassis, helping ensure that the bundle can remain active in the event of a port, application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), or module failure. ISLs in a PortChannel can have significantly different lengths. This capability is valuable in campus and metropolitan area network (MAN) environments because logical links can now be spread over multiple physical paths, helping ensure uninterrupted connectivity even if one of the physical paths is disrupted. Cisco MDS 9710 is designed to meet uptime requirements of solutions for today's most demanding environments.

The combination of the Supervisor-1, 16-Gbps FC switching module, and the Fabric-1 Crossbar switching module enables up to 1.5 Tbps of FC throughput between modules in each direction for each of the eight MDS 9710 payload slots. This per-slot bandwidth is double the bandwidth needed to support a 48-port 16G FC module at full line rate. MDS 9710 architecture, based on central arbitration and crossbar fabric, provides 16G line rate, nonblocking, and predictable performance across all traffic conditions for every port in the chassis.

The Cisco MDS 9710 is designed to include the following main features:

Intelligent network services: VSAN technology, access control lists (ACLs) for hardware-based intelligent frame processing, and fabricwide quality of service (QoS) enable migration from SAN islands to enterprisewide storage networks.

  • Integrated hardware-based VSANs and IVR: Integration of VSANs into port level hardware allows any port in a system or fabric to be partitioned to any VSAN. Integrated hardware-based IVR provides line-rate routing between any ports in a system or fabric without the need for external routing appliances.
  • Intelligent storage services: MDS 9710 operates with intelligent service capabilities on other MDS 9000 family platforms to provide services such as acceleration of storage applications for data replication and backup, and data migration to hosts and targets attached to MDS 9710.
  • Smart Zoning: When the Smart Zoning feature is enabled, Cisco MDS 9700 series fabrics provision the hardware access control entries specified by the zone set more efficiently, avoiding the superfluous entries that would allow servers (initiators) to talk to other servers, or allow storage devices (targets) to talk to other storage devices. This feature makes larger zones with multiple initiators and multiple targets feasible without excessive consumption of hardware resources. Thus, smart zones can correspond to applications, application clusters, hypervisor clusters, or other data center entities, saving the time that administrators previously spent creating many small zones, and enabling the automation of zoning tasks.

Comprehensive security: In addition to support for services such as VSANs, hardware-enforced zoning, ACLs, and per-VSAN role-based access control (RBAC), the Cisco MDS 9700 series supports a comprehensive security framework consisting of RADIUS and TACACS+, Fibre Channel Security Protocol (FC-SP), Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP), Secure Shell (SSH) Protocol, and Simple Network Management Protocol Version 3 (SNMPv3).

Sophisticated diagnostics: The Cisco MDS 9710 provides intelligent diagnostics, protocol decoding, and network analysis tools, as well as integrated Call Home capability for added reliability, faster problem resolution, and reduced service costs.

Advanced traffic management: Advanced traffic management capabilities integrated into the Cisco MDS 9710 simplify deployment and optimization of large-scale fabrics:

  • Virtual output queuing: Helps ensure line-rate performance on each port, independent of traffic pattern, by eliminating head-of-line blocking.
  • PortChannels: Allows users to aggregate up to 16 physical ISLs into a single logical bundle, providing optimized bandwidth utilization across all links. The bundle can consist of any speed-matched ports from any module in the chassis, helping ensure that the bundle can remain active even in the event of a module failure.
  • Fabric shortest path first (FSPF) based multipathing: Provides the intelligence to load balance across up to 16 FC equal cost paths and, in the event of a switch failure, dynamically reroute traffic.
  • QoS: Can be used to manage bandwidth and control latency to prioritize critical traffic.

Advanced diagnostics and troubleshooting tools: Management of large-scale storage networks requires proactive diagnostics, tools to verify connectivity and route latency, and mechanisms for capturing and analyzing traffic. Cisco MDS 9710 integrates advanced analysis and debug tools. Power-on self test (POST) and online diagnostics provide proactive health monitoring. Cisco MDS 9710 provides the integrated functionality required to implement diagnostic capabilities such as FC Traceroute for detailing the exact path and timing of flows, and Switched Port Analyzer (SPAN) and Remote Switched Port Analyzer (RSPAN) to intelligently capture network traffic. After traffic has been captured, it can then be analyzed with the Cisco Fabric Analyzer, an embedded FC analyzer.

MDS 9700 Supervisor-1 Module (#9602)

The MDS 9700 Supervisor-1 Module delivers the latest advanced switching technology with proven Cisco SAN-OS software to power a new generation of scalable and intelligent multilayer switching solutions for storage area networks (SANs). Designed to integrate multiprotocol switching and routing, intelligent SAN services, and storage applications onto highly scalable SAN switching platforms, the Cisco MDS 9700 Supervisor-1 Module enables intelligent, resilient, scalable, and secure high performance multilayer SAN switching solutions.

The MDS 9710 Supervisor-1 Module combines industry-leading scalability and performance, intelligent SAN services, nondisruptive software upgrades, stateful process restart and failover, and fully redundant operation for a new standard in director-class SAN switching. Supporting up to 384 FC ports in a single chassis, and up to 24 Tbps of FC system bandwidth, the Cisco MDS 9700 Series Supervisor-1 Module is designed to meet the requirements of even the largest data center storage environments.

MDS 9700 48 Port 16Gbps FC Switching Module (#3648)

Cisco MDS 9700 series 16-Gbps Fibre Channel Switching Module is designed to provide high-performance and innovative features to enable convergence, scalability, and intelligence in large, virtualized data centers. With up to 384 line-rate 16-Gbps FC ports per chassis and intelligent fabric services such as integrated VSANs, IVR, and PortChannels, the MDS 9700 48-port 16-Gbps Fibre Channel Module (#3648) can enable deployment of large, scalable, and virtualized data centers.

The 48-port 16 Gbps Fibre Channel Module (#3648) is designed to deliver full-duplex aggregate performance of 768 Gbps, making this module well-suited for attachment of high-performance 16-Gbps storage subsystems, 16-Gbps ISLs, and high-performance and virtualized servers.

Cisco MDS 9700 series 16 Gbps Fibre Channel Module (#3648) can also provide Cisco VMpath technology, which enables advanced virtual machine-aware SAN provisioning and monitoring for virtualized data centers. With Cisco VMpath, users can monitor, manage, and control SAN resource allocation and performance on a per-virtual machine basis and map out paths all the way from the server to storage, enabling tracking of mission-critical workloads end-to-end.

Cisco MDS 9700 series Fibre Channel Switching Modules are hot-swappable and compatible with 2, 4, 8, 16 and 10 Gbps interfaces, and they support hot-swappable Enhanced Small Form-Factor Pluggable (SFP+) transceivers. Individual ports can be configured with Cisco, 8, 10, or 16 Gbps shortwave or longwave SFP+ transceivers. Each port supports 500 buffer credits for extensibility without requiring additional licensing.

The 16 Gbps FC switching modules continue to provide previously available features, such as predictable performance and high availability, advanced traffic management capabilities, integrated VSANs and IVR, resilient high-performance ISLs, comprehensive security frameworks, fault detection and isolation of errored packets, and sophisticated diagnostics.

MDS 9700 Fabric-1 Switching Module (#3601, #9601)

The MDS 9710-E08 base model includes three Fabric-1 Modules. A minimum of three Fabric-1 are needed to support a fully populated chassis with 8 x 48-port 16G FC cards (#3648). Four Fabric-1 modules provide N+1 protection.

The following firmware activation features are available for the Cisco MDS 9710 Multilayer Director:

MDS 9700 Enterprise Package (#7610): The Cisco MDS 9700 Enterprise Package is designed to provide enhanced security and management features bundled for convenience and added flexibility. With this license, up to 4095 buffer credits can be allocated to an individual port, enabling full link bandwidth over long distances with no degradation in link utilization. Some of the functions enabled with this feature are VSAN-based access control, IP security, fabric binding, VSAN routing.

MDS 9700 DCNM SAN Advanced Edition (#7611): MDS 9700 DCNM is an easy-to-use application that simplifies management across multiple switches and fabrics. Focused on supporting efficient operations and management of virtual machine-aware fabrics, it provides a robust framework and rich feature set that meets the routing, switching, and storage administration needs of present and future virtualized data centers. MDS 9700 DCNM streamlines provisioning of the unified fabric and proactively monitors the SAN components. MDS 9700 DCNM SAN Advanced Edition (#7611) is licensed for each MDS 9710 (9710-E08).

The Cisco MDS 9710 (9710-E08) is a fourteen-rack-unit chassis, which requires a minimum of one and supports up to a maximum of eight optional modules. With the #3648 48-port 16 Gbps FC Module the MDS 9710 scales from 48 to 384 ports of Fibre Channel switching at 16 Gbps speed. It is capable of auto-negotiation to 2, 4, 8, and 16 Gbps speeds for servers and storage components.

The base model includes three Fabric-1 and two Supervisor-1 modules. The base model ships with three fan trays and six out of eight 3000 W ac power supplies. The 9710-E08 system has front-to-back airflow and it is rack mountable in standard 19-inch EIA rack. To assure installability and serviceability in non-IBM industry-standard racks, review the installation planning information for any product-specific installation requirements.

The 9710-E08 ships with an accessory tray including rack kit, ESD wrist strap, SFP extractor, Cisco media kit CD, and Hazardous substances document.

To meet the needs of all users, the MDS 9710 provides three principal modes of management: the Cisco MDS 9000 Family CLI, Cisco DCNM, and integration with third-party storage management tools. On the front of the unit, there are three connections (one RJ45 Console, one Ethernet RJ45, and two USB 2.0 ports) providing management interface.

Fiber Channel Optic Cables

Fiber optic cable is required for attaching the Cisco MDS 9700 series switch or director to host computer system adapters, or other Fibre Channel storage area components. The attaching fiber cable must be:

  • 62.5/125 micron (OM1) for distances up to 150 meters at 2 Gbps speed, 70 meters at 4 Gbps, 21 meters at 8 Gbps, 33 m at 10 Gbps, or 15 m at 16 Gbps
  • 50.0/125 micron (OM2) for distances up to 300 meters at 2 Gbps 1 speed, 150 meters at 4 Gbps, 50 meters at 8 Gbps, 82 m at 10 Gbps, or 35 m at 16 Gbps
  • 50.0 micron (OM3) for distances up to 150 meters at 8 Gbps, or 100 m at 16 Gbps

Longwave transceivers require 9 micron single-mode fibre optic cables. The connection is an LC connector type. The fiber optic cable can be customer supplied, and must meet specifications defined by Cisco Systems. Where a limited distance connection exists, fiber optic cables can be ordered with Cisco products from IBM with the following features:
