Abstract

The IBM LTO-7 cartridge initialized as Type M media feature #5521 will enable ordering of prelabeled, uninitialized LTO-7 Type M media cartridges. These cartridges will be ready to be initialized on site as LTO-7 Type M media by using the appropriate tape library firmware on supported tape libraries. Once the cartridge is initialized as LTO-7 Type M media on LTO-8 drives, capacity will increase by 50%, from 6 TB to 9 TB.

Model abstract 3589-452

The IBM 3589 LTO Ultrium Model 452 is an IBM 9 TB Ultrium 7 Uninitialized Data Cartridge prelabeled to support LTO-7 Type M media for LTO-8 drives and is optionally packed in individual jewel cases.

Highlights

With the release of IBM Ultrium LTO-7 Type M media for LTO-8 drives, new data cartridges are offered to deliver flexibility in the specification and ordering of prelabeled and bulk-packaged data cartridges for the IBM LTO-8 Ultrium family of products. The new LTO-7 Type M media Model 452 enables you to order prelabeled, uninitialized Ultrium LTO-7 Type M media cartridges that are ready to be initialized on site. Once the cartridge is initialized as LTO-7 Type M media on an LTO-8 drive using the appropriate tape library firmware on supported tape libraries, capacity will increase from 6 TB to 9 TB. Initialization capability will be enabled on TS2900 Tape Autoloader, TS3100/3200, TS3310, TS4300, and TS4500 Tape Libraries by updating to the latest library firmware.

Description

IBM Ultrium LTO-7 Type M media data cartridges deliver flexibility in the specification and ordering of prelabeled, 20-pack data cartridges for the IBM LTO-8 Ultrium family of products.

LTO-7 Type M media used in conjunction with an LTO-8 drive delivers the capability of writing 9 TB capacity on a new LTO-7 cartridge instead of the 6 TB as specified by the LTO-7 format. LTO-7 Type M media cartridges include a new barcode label ending with the last two characters M8. A normal 6 TB LTO-7 cartridge is indicated with an automation barcode label ending in L7. Only new, unused LTO-7 cartridges may be initialized as LTO-7 Type M media. Once a cartridge is initialized as M8, it may not be changed back to a 6 TB LTO-7 cartridge. In addition, an LTO-7 Type M media cartridge can only be written and read in an LTO-8 drive, and LTO-7 drives are not capable of reading LTO-7 Type M media cartridges.

LTO-7 Type M media will support existing LTO format features including data compression, encryption, and partitioning, enabling IBM Linear Tape File System. LTO-7 Type M media will not be supported on WORM cartridges.

Initialization capability will be enabled on TS2900 Tape Autoloader, TS3100/3200, TS3310, TS4300, and TS4500 Tape Libraries by updating to the latest library firmware.

IBM 3589 LTO Ultrium tape cartridges provide the ability to order IBM Ultrium LTO-7 Type M media data cartridges with the following features:

  • Color-coding and prelabeling with the ability to specify a starting volume serial to help save time and labor when adding new cartridges into existing inventory
  • Prelabeling LTO Ultrium 7 cartridges with M8 media label
  • Individual jewel cases or bulk packaging
  • Cartridge memory built into every data cartridge to help enhance functionality and media reliability by storing access history and media performance information for use by the tape drive every time the cartridge is accessed
  • Half-inch particle tape ready to be initialized at customer's location for a 9 TB capacity with M8 media label

TOC Link Hardware requirements TOC Link Software requirements

  • Approximate cartridge dimensions: 105.4 x 102 x 21.5 mm (4.1 x 4.0 x 0.8 in.) (smaller than most existing single-reel tape cartridges). The total length of the media is 960 meters (3149.61 feet).
  • The single-hub design allows for the cartridge to be optimally packed with media. High capacity is further enhanced by the use of an LTO Technology data compression algorithm with two control modes to maximize compression efficiency.
  • LTO-CM is a noncontacting passive RF interface embedded in the cartridge which contains 16,320 bytes of non-volatile memory. Calibration information, manufacturers data, and information about initialization may stored in this memory area.
  • Dedicated Dual Servo Bands are pre-written on the tape during the tape cartridge manufacture process. If one servo element becomes defective, or if a portion of the servo code on the tape becomes corrupt, the head will continue to track as a result of the second "redundant" servo system.
  • Longitudinal Position words encoded within the servo frames allow efficient access to absolute locations down the length of the tape.
  • Data Integrity features include two levels of error correction that can provide recovery from longitudinal media scratches. Read-While-Write (RWW) capability allows real-time verification of written data.

Physical specifications

  • Width: 105.4 mm (4.1 in.)
  • Depth: 102 mm (4.0 in.)
  • Height: 21.55 mm (0.8 in.)

To assure installability and serviceability in non-IBM industry-standard racks, review the installation planning information for any product-specific installation requirements.

Operating environment

  • Operating:
    • Temperature: 10°C to 45°C (50°F to 113°F)
    • Relative humidity: 10% - 80% noncondensing
    • Maximum wet bulb temperature: 26°C (79°F)
  • Short Term Storage:
    • Temperature: 16°C to 35°C (61°F to 95°F)
    • Relative humidity: 20% - 80% noncondensing
    • Maximum wet bulb temperature: 26°C (79°F)
  • Archival Storage:
    • Temperature: 16°C to 25°C (61°F to 77°F)
    • Relative humidity: 20% - 50% noncondensing
    • Maximum wet bulb temperature: 26°C (79°F)
  • Shipping:
    • Temperature: -23°C to 49°C (-9°F to 120°F)
    • Relative humidity: 5% - 80% noncondensing
    • Maximum wet bulb temperature: 26°C (79°F)

The data recorded on the cartridge has a minimum archive storage life of 30 years with less than 5% loss in demagnetization when the cartridge is stored at 16°C to 25°C, 20%, to 50% noncondensing humidity and wet bulb temperature of 26°C maximum.

Limitations

Feature number 5521 is only for use with LTO 8 tape drives with the following minimum firmware versions in IBM tape libraries that support uninitialized LTO-7 Type M media:

  • LTO 8 Half-high SAS: HB83
  • LTO 8 Half-high Fibre Channel: HB83
  • LTO 8 Full-high Fibre Channel: HB82

This feature is only available through the IBM retail channel.

Hardware requirements

The 3589 provides labeled or unlabeled data cartridges for Ultrium tape drive products. The 3589 Model 452 is an 9 TB Ultrium 7 uninitialized data cartridge LTO-7 Type M media for use on LTO-8 Ultrium tape drive products.

Note: Jewel Case feature (#8000) is optional for Model 452, but is recommended to protect media in transit.

For the label, specify the following:

  • Alpha character label background options: Select either Color/Vibrant (#9022), White (#9077), or Unicolor (#9097) for the background for alpha characters in the VOLSER label.
  • Alpha character VOLSER color choices: If the Color/Vibrant feature (#9022) is selected or the Unicolor feature (#9097), then any of ten background colors are available (#9003 to #9012) for the Alpha characters selected. The same background color will be on all the Alpha characters.
  • Starting VOLSER sequence number: The starting sequence number for labeled cartridges can be selected from the following:
    • First alphanumeric digit (0 to 9 and A to Z): #9100 ('0') to #9135 ('Z')
    • Second alphanumeric digit (0 to 9 and A to Z): #9200 ('0') to #9235 ('Z')
