Description:

The 3390 Models 1, 2, and 3 are high-performance, high-capacity direct access storage devices (DASD) available in multiple actuator, unit, and string capacity options. These 3390 models offer a maximum capacity of up to 34 gigabytes (GB) per unit, 90.8GB per string, or 181.6GB per 3990 storage subsystem. Using advanced head and disk assembly (HDA) design and advanced circuit technology, the 3390 Models 1, 2, and 3 provide improvements in performance, reliability, availability, and serviceability when compared to IBM 3380 DASD. With the improvements in the technology, design, and packaging of the 3390, a 90GB 3390 Model 3 string can replace 12 3380K units, 18 3380 E units, or 36 3380 D or Standard units, providing performance improvements as well as significant improvements in floorspace utilization and significantly reduced power and cooling requirements per megabyte.

The 3390 Model 9 is a very large capacity lower performance direct access storage device (DASD) available in multiple unit and string capacity options. The 3390 Model 9 offers a maximum capacity of up to 102 gigabytes(GB) per unit, 272GB per string, or 544GB per 3990 storage subsystem. The minimum capacity per unit is 34GB. Using an advanced magnetoresistive head, an improved disk, advanced circuit technology, and a new power subsystem, the 3390 Model 9 provides improvements in reliability, availability, and serviceability when compared to 3380 and other 3390 DASD.

The 3390 Model 1, 2, and 3 DASD attach to a 3990 Model 2, 3, or 6 Storage Control with parallel and/or ESCON channel adapters. The 3990 Model 3 and 6 also provide Extended Functions such as DASD fast write, dual copy and, with DFSMS/MVS, concurrent copy. The 3390 Models 1, 2, and 3 attach to ES/9000*, 3090* and 308X processors via the 3990 Storage Control Model 2 or 3 and can coexist with 3380 D/E and J/K strings. If attached to a 3990 Model 6 Storage Control, 3380 string coexistence or 308X attachment is not supported. If 3390 Models 1, 2, or 3 are installed on a 3990 Model 2 or 3 with Licensed Internal Code supporting 3390 Model 9s, 3380 or 308X attachment is not supported. The 3390 high- performance family is supported in versions of MVS, VM, VSE, TPF, and AIX environments.

The 3390 Model 9 DASD attaches to 3990 Models 2 and 3 (with the Extended Platform, FC 6201, 6202, 6203, 6204, or 9203, and the supporting level of Licensed Internal Code installed) as well as to the 3990 Model 6 Storage Control with Parallel and/or ESCON channel adapters. The 3990 Models 3 and 6 also provide the Extended Functions DASD fast write and dual copy and, with DFSMS/MVS, concurrent copy. The 3990 Models 2 and 3 with Licensed Internal Code supporting attachment of 3390 Model 9s do not support 3380s and do not support 308X attachment, but do support 3380 Track Compatibility Mode on any 3390 Model 1/2/3 strings. The 3990 Model 6 does not support 3380s or 3380 Track Compatibility Mode and does not support 308X attachment. The 3390 Model 9 attaches to ES/9000 and 3090 processors via the 3990 Storage Control Models 2, 3, or 6, and can coexist with another 3390 DASD strings on the same 3990. The 3390 Model 9 is supported in versions of MVS, VM, VSE, and AIX environments.

Model Abstract 3390-B2C

The Model B2C is a direct access storage unit containing 12 1.89-GB capacity devices. The Model B2C contains six HDAs, each having a capacity of 3.78 GB, for a total capacity of 22.7 GB per unit.
