DESCRIPTION

If You Already Own PC DOS 7

You can:

New With PC DOS 2000

PC DOS 2000 contains integrated Year 2000 updates and code enhancements for PCs that fail to update the BIOS Century Byte information. Without this BIOS century-rollover provision, many systems may cause DOS to report an incorrect system date. The century-rollover may not work on some older machines. No action is required on your part. The update is an automatic event during installation.

You can use dates between January 1, 1980, and December 31, 2079.

Support for the new European Monetary Union's (EMU) eurocurrency symbol is included in PC DOS 2000. The eurocurrency symbol has been added to code page 850 and includes a special sequence of keystrokes to invoke it in Latin keyboards.

The version is displayed with the VER command. When you type the VER command, you will see:

PC DOS Version 7.0, Revision 1
PC DOS Version 7 features are included in PC DOS 2000:
  • Memory Management: More free conventional (up to 40 KB) and high memory is available than in DOS 6.x versions. In addition, the RAMBoost memory management tool helps organize your configuration to provide the maximum amount of available memory for your DOS and Windows application programs. Disk performance is also improved from DOS 6.x versions.

  • DYNALOAD: Enables some device drivers to be loaded without rebooting.

  • DISK Compression: Get outstanding disk compression with Stacker 4.0 from Stac Electronics. This feature gives you an extraordinary combination of compression ratio and the most free disk space possible. You can upgrade from prior disk compression technologies such as MS-DOS DoubleSpace/DriveSpace, PC DOS SuperStor/DS, and earlier versions of Stacker. This support is designed to use little conventional memory.

  • File Synchronization:
    • Keeps your work files current
    • Automatically updates files between two personal computers; for example, mobile and desktop
  • REXX: A high-level programming language:
    • Powerful
    • Easy-to-use
    • Portable across many operating systems
  • E Editor: A full-screen text editor helps you to maintain your ASCII-based files.

  • Scheduler: Execute DOS programs at specific times using a full-screen, easy interface.

  • PCMCIA: Phoenix Technologies PCMCIA supports PC cards to extend the capability of your computer.

  • Online Help:
    • Hypertext links
    • Search capability
    • Easy access to index, contents
    • Print functions
  • Backup, Restore, and Undelete: Utilities to help you manage your DOS and Windows data files.
LAN administrators can configure PC DOS 2000 on a network server. This allows for PC DOS installation across the network by individual client workstations.

Test your systems for Year 2000 readiness now. Look at your:

  • Firmware
  • Operating system
  • Application programs
Service: Defect support is available to PC DOS 2000 customers through January 31, 2001. Customers who have purchased an IBM software service contract are entitled to the services as outlined in the terms and conditions of that contract. For information on IBM software service contracts, contact your IBM marketing organization or IBM Business Partner.

TECHNICAL INFORMATION

Specified Operating Environment

Hardware Requirements: PC DOS 2000 operates on Intel (TM)-based or Intel-compatible PCs (808x, 286, 386, 486, and Pentium (TM) processors). The minimum system memory required for PC DOS 2000 installation is 512 KB. Check with the hardware manufacturer to determine if your hardware is Year 2000 ready.

You can install PC DOS 2000 from a CD-ROM drive, a diskette drive, or from the network to the hard disk.

The PC DOS 2000 CD-ROM version requires DOS 3.3, or later (including MS-DOS), with a CD-ROM driver installed on the hard disk.

A set of installation diskettes can be created from the PC DOS 2000 CD-ROM on a DOS system and an installed CD-ROM drive. Up to seven blank high-density (1.44 MB) 3.5-inch diskettes are required. Installation using the PC DOS 2000 diskettes requires a 1.44 MB 3.5-inch disk drive as drive A. The minimum disk space required for PC DOS 2000 is 6 MB if all defaults are taken on installation. The maximum disk space required for PC DOS 2000 is 18.5 MB if all features for both DOS and Windows (TM) are installed.

Software Requirements: PC DOS 2000 is compatible with earlier versions of DOS.

To run Windows-based utilities, Windows 3.1, or later, is required.

Limitations: Applications supported on earlier versions of DOS should run with PC DOS 2000. However, a few older applications may have dependencies on specific DOS versions. Watch for:

  • Applications dependent on a version prior to 7.0: Consider the SETVER command

  • Older applications dependent on deleted commands: Copy these commands from licensed copies of PC DOS Version 6.3.

  • Double space API or dependence on the DoubleSpace or DriveSpace format. PC DOS 2000 does not support these.

  • Functions not supported by PC DOS 2000:
    • GRAPHICS.COM
    • PRINTER.SYS
    • COMP.COM
    • FASTOPEN.EXE
    • EXE2BIN.EXE
    • EDLIN.COM
    • RECOVER.COM
These commands should run compatibly with PC DOS 2000 when used with the SETVER command. If these commands are needed on systems with PC DOS 2000 and you have a license to PC DOS Version 6.3, you can copy the files to support these commands to all licensed PC DOS 2000 systems where these files are required. Refer to the license information included with the product for details.

Planning Information

Program services will be available until January 31, 2001. IBM is providing defect support for IBM PC DOS 2000 and IBM PC DOS 2000 for DBCS until January 31, 2001.

If you have purchased an IBM software service contract, the terms and conditions of that service contract will determine what services you are entitled to with respect to the Program. For information on IBM software service contracts, contact your IBM marketing organization or IBM Business Partner.

Customer Responsibilities: Test your systems for Year 2000 readiness as early as possible.

Installability: Install PC DOS 2000 from a CD-ROM drive, a diskette drive, or from the network to the hard disk.

Installation using the PC DOS 2000 CD-ROM requires DOS 3.3, or later (including MS-DOS), installed on the hard drive with an installed CD-ROM drive.

A set of installation diskettes can be created from the PC DOS 2000 CD-ROM on a DOS system with an attached CD-ROM drive. Up to seven blank, high-density (1.44 MB) 3.5-inch diskettes are required.

Packaging: PC DOS 2000 is distributed in two packages: diskette and CD-ROM. Both packages are used for installing either a base or upgrade system.

Both packages are labeled "PC DOS 2000" and "includes PC DOS 7."

In addition to the media, each package includes:

  • PC DOS 7 User's Guide (printed)
  • IBM International Program License Agreement in multilanguage booklet
  • License Information
  • Customer Service and Support Sheet
  • System Requirements
  • Proof of Entitlement (PoE)
The diskette package is a boxed package similar to the PC DOS 7 diskette package. The CD-ROM package is not boxed. The CD-ROM package consists of the CD-ROM (in paper sleeve) included within the pages of the PC DOS 7 User's Guide.

Registration for PC DOS 2000 is not required.
