IBM Spectrum Virtualize™ for Public Cloud V8.1.1 delivers a powerful solution for the deployment of IBM Spectrum Virtualize software in public cloud, starting with IBM® public cloud. This new capability provides a monthly license to deploy and use Spectrum Virtualize in IBM Cloud to enable hybrid cloud solutions, offering the ability to transfer data between on-premises private clouds or data centers and the public cloud.

Remote replication will be supported between Spectrum Virtualize-based appliances (including SAN Volume Controller (SVC), the Storwize® family, IBM FlashSystem® V9000, and VersaStack with Storwize family or SVC), or Spectrum Virtualize Software Only and the IBM Cloud. Through IP-based replication with Global or Metro Mirror or Global Mirror with Change Volumes, customers can create secondary copies of on-premises data in the public cloud for disaster recovery, workload redistribution, or migration of data from on-premises data centers to public clouds. The license provides an installation script which automates the deployment of Spectrum Virtualize software onto specified IBM Cloud infrastructures in over 25 data centers around the world.

You can create either two- or four-node high availability clusters, similar to on-premises SVC appliances. IBM Cloud block storage can be easily managed through Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud for persistent data storage, and as the target of remote copy services. Extend the capabilities of IBM Cloud block storage through the use of IBM Spectrum Virtualize enterprise-class features such as local and remote copy services. Remote copy services can also be used between two IBM Cloud data centers for improved availability.

Key prerequisites

Top rule

You may choose any data center with hardware that meets the minimum requirements. The main requirement is the availability of 10 Gbps dual public and private network uplinks (unbonded) hardware, and the secondary requirement is the availability of a supported dual-processor server. For information on valid IBM Cloud data centers, see IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud 8.1.1 in IBM Knowledge Center.

Additional requirements:

  • A local machine with internet access, for example a personal workstation or laptop
  • RHEL 7.x, Microsoft™ Windows™ 7, or macOS operating systems
  • Browser
  • Call Home must be configured for calculating metered capacity by month

Upon installation of Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud, you will need to set up a cloud quorum application on a virtual server that is separate from the bare metal servers where Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud is installed.

Software requirements

The operating system ordered on the IBM public cloud bare metal server must be either Red Hat 7.1 (64 bit) version locked or Red Hat Enterprise Linux® 7.x (64 bit). The locked version of Red Hat 7.1 is preferable, if available.

Hardware requirements

Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud supports specific hardware which can be purchased as part of an IBM Cloud infrastructure. IBM Cloud hardware requirements include:

  • Either two or four IBM Cloud bare metal servers recommended for Spectrum Virtualize and include 2.4 GHz, Intel Xeon™ E5-2620, 12 Core, and 64 GB RAM.
  • The server version should be a dual-processor multicore server. CPU model Intel Xeon E5-2620 v3 is recommended except in locations with the 16+ cores note in the table above which require a server with more cores in order to get the required networking support.
  • CPU should be no less than six cores per CPU.
  • At least 64 GB of RAM configured in the bare metal server
  • There must be four hard disks per server, configured as two independent RAID 1 arrays resulting in /dev/sda for the operating system and /dev/sdb for exclusive use by IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud. /dev/sdb must be greater than or equal to 150 GB.
  • The configuration of 10 Gb private unbounded VLAN on each bare metal server. The network cards must be 10 Gbps dual-public and dual-private network uplinks (unbonded).
  • Redundant power supply is required if available in the selected IBM Cloud data center.
  • All nodes of the same IBM Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud cluster must use the same VLAN.
  • For back-end block storage managed by Spectrum Virtualize, either IBM Cloud block endurance or performance tiers are supported.

See the Block Storage website for details.

  • For clients who wish to replicate data between on-premises data centers and IBM public cloud, consult the IBM Cloud Networking Services for network connectivity, including VPN or Gateways that may be required. See the Direct Link or Network appliances for your cloud apps websites for further information.

Specified operating environment

Software requirements

Only internet connectivity and a browser to access the service is needed. There are no other prerequisites.

For product environment and configuration information, go to the Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud website.

Limitations

The generation of the CPU architecture and the CPU frequency are expected to affect performance of any CPU-bound workloads. At the time of writing, the reference configuration for performance characterization testing uses E5-2620 v3 CPUs at 2.4 GHz.

The IO performance that Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud can provide is also limited by the following facts :

  • 2x10 Gb Ethernet port per node shared by IO from hosts to Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud, Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud to IBM Cloud block storage, and Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud write mirror.
  • In order to achieve better performance, IP addresses for Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud nodes and client nodes should be configured to use the same subnet.

The following features are not supported in version 8.1.1 of Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud, but may be supported in later versions:

  • Encryption
  • Transparent cloud tiering
  • Stretch cluster and local HyperSwap®
  • Real-time Compression™
  • Hot spare node (HSN)
  • IPv6 address as node IP

For additional information, see the Usage restrictions section in the Terms and conditions section of this announcement, and to the License Information document that is available on the IBM Software License Agreement website.

Additional information on configuration limitations and configuration guidelines is further documented in the README file accompanying the Spectrum Virtualize Software or in furnished publications for this product available at the Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud support website.

Encryption and other functions in this announcement may be subject to limitations and restrictions for supported configurations, environments, and use. See the V8.1 Configuration Limits and Restrictions document for details.

To view this document, access the IBM Systems Support website.

Select Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud in the Product Finder menu.

Enter 8.1 Configuration Limits and Restrictions in the Search Support field and check the Search only... box.

Performance considerations

The IO performance that Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud can provide is also limited by the following:

  • 2x10 Gb Ethernet port per node Shared by IO from hosts to Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud, Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud to IBM Cloud block storage, and Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud write mirror

In order to achieve better performance, IP addresses for Spectrum Virtualize for Public Cloud nodes and client nodes should be configured to use the same subnet.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
