Overview
Bottom rule

IBM MQ V9.0.3 for Multiplatforms adds capabilities on top of previous Continuous Delivery releases that enhance the IBM MQ V9.0 Long Term Support Release. As with the prior releases, IBM MQ V9.0.3 delivers robust, secure, and scalable enterprise messaging for connecting applications, systems, and services on premises, in the cloud, or in hybrid environments.

Not all MQ platforms get Continuous Delivery releases. Some get only the option of a Long Term Support Release, which gets updated with fixpacks but no new functions. This announcement provides a summary of the enhancements delivered in both IBM MQ V9.0.2 and IBM MQ V9.0.3 releases.

New functions in this release include updates to previously delivered MQ functions such as the REST API. It also includes new functions such as changes to the logger that improve the experience of using linear logging. Additional improvements include connectivity to the IBM Cloud Product Insights offering and, for MQ Advanced clients, enhancements to IBM MQ Managed File Transfer functions.

Since the announcement of IBM MQ V9.0.1, Virtual Processor Core licensing has been added. Changes in the product parts and the associated licensing for IBM MQ Advanced were announced in Withdrawal Announcement 917-031, dated January 24, 2017.

If you choose the Continuous Delivery release, then you will need to continue to regularly apply future Continuous Delivery updates of fixes and new function as they become available. It is not recommended that you switch back and forth between the Long Term Support Release and the Continuous Delivery release.

Description
Bottom rule

A number of enhanced functions are offered in the IBM MQ V9.0.2 and IBM MQ V9.0.3 Continuous Delivery releases. Some of these are new and some build on features that were delivered in IBM MQ V9 or earlier releases. These functions are available only for clients who download and deploy the Continuous Delivery releases, and are not available in the IBM MQ V9 Long Term Support Release.

In addition to the functional changes, some significant licensing changes have been made since the IBM MQ V9.0.1 announcement:

  • Virtual Processor Core pricing:
    • IBM MQ has been available priced on a PVU metric, either as a perpetual license or under a monthly license. Since December 2016, the IBM MQ and MQ Advanced parts have been available as monthly Virtual Processor Core (VPC) parts. This allows licensing based on the number of virtual processor cores made available, rather than having to count the PVUs of those cores. This can be simpler, especially when deploying in clouds, where there is no readily available mapping to PVUs available.
  • Simplified MQ Advanced licensing:
    • In January 2017, IBM published Withdrawal Announcement 917-031, dated January 24, 2017, which withdrew the parts of individual components such as IBM MQ Advanced Message Security and IBM MQ Telemetry, and the parts for IBM MQ Managed File Transfer, consolidating the availability of all those functions within the IBM MQ Advanced license. This removed the need to individually license the MQ Managed File Transfer Agent. These can now be deployed in any quantity so long as they are connected to MQ Advanced entitled queue managers.

Enhancements in IBM MQ V9.0.2

  • Improvements to logging:
    • Recovery from failures makes use of the information recorded in logs. The sequence of log records is referred to as a media image. Media images need to be stored to allow recreation of the object being logged, in case of additional errors in the logs. Taking these media images on a regular basis to ensure recoverability has been an administrative burden. Starting with MQ V9.0.2, these can now be scheduled by the queue manager, making the process more efficient. In addition, the queue manager will schedule the activity to reduce overhead that can impact message throughput.
    • Once MQ messages have been completely processed, the associated log records can be cleaned up and removed. Additional enhancements in this release enable automatic archiving and deletion of old log records that are no longer required.
  • Updates to administrative REST API:
    • This new API capability was added in the IBM MQ V9.0.1 release with just a couple of functions. In the MQ V9.0.2 release, additional features include the ability to create, read, update, and delete queues, and view their status.
    • To ensure that the capability provided by the REST API is available only to appropriate users, authentication and authorized controls are now applied to manage who can access the API and to limit what each authenticated user can do.
  • Connectivity to IBM Cloud Product Insights: IBM Cloud Product Insights is a cloud service running in IBM Bluemix® that delivers enhanced views of IBM software running both in the cloud and on premises. IBM MQ V9.0.2 supports this by publishing information that can be displayed in the Product Insights dashboard. Queue manager information available includes the platform it is running on and the version of the queue manager. It also includes information about activity on the queue managers such as the number of persistent and nonpersistent messages put to the queue manager by applications. The total number of bytes sent as persistent and nonpersistent messages are also available.
  • Access to published Salesforce events: A bridging agent is now available that can be run separately from an MQ queue manager. This agent enables Salesforce Platform Events or PushTopics to trigger MQ messages that will then provide MQ applications with data about the Salesforce activity without needing to be directly connected to Salesforce.
  • Additional updates to MQ:
    • Installation of earlier versions of MQ has included the installation of a JRE. With this release, clients now have the choice to not install the supplied JRE or to remove the JRE from an already installed MQ instance.
    • Clients have been choosing to run MQ on Ubuntu. With this release, IBM includes a Debian installer for the Ubuntu images of IBM MQ.
  • IBM MQ Managed File Transfer enhancements:
    • IBM MQ Managed File Transfer extends IBM MQ by enabling the contents of files to be sent as MQ messages over the MQ infrastructure. The licensing for MQ Managed File Transfer was recently simplified by withdrawing individual licensed parts and entitling MQ Advanced clients to deploy any number of MQ Managed File Transfer Agents when connected to MQ Advanced entitled queue managers.
    • This release includes enhancements for diagnosing and resolving problems that occur when an MQ Managed File Transfer Agent is reported as unreachable. Additional information is now available that shows not only the status of the Agent held by the MQ Coordination Queue Manager but how old that status is. This can help to determine whether there is a transient problem with contacting the Agent or whether there is a substantive problem with the Agent itself. This can speed up diagnosis of a problem and aid problem resolution.

Enhancements in IBM MQ V9.0.3

  • Further updates to administrative REST API: Additional information is now being published to the IBM Cloud Product Insights service. This includes the ability to read and update information about the queue manager configuration, and to display the status of the queue manager.
  • IBM MQ Managed File Transfer enhancements: To further aid diagnostics and problem resolution, additional information will be provided about the status of Managed File Transfer Monitors. This can provide better visibility in the case where files have not been successfully transferred by a Managed File Transfer Agent.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

Install

Install is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An install is an installed copy of the program on a physical or virtual disk made available to be executed on a computer. Licensee must obtain an entitlement for each install of the program.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip (socket). A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found on the PVU licensing for Distributed Software page. Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage® Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms found on the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules page. If using full capacity licensing, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using virtualization capacity licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules that can be found on the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules page.

* An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Notes:

  • Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.

Processor Value Unit (PVU) sub-capacity licensing

This software product is eligible for sub-capacity licensing. Customers must accept the terms of the IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement Attachment for Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (Attachment), and must obtain PVU Proofs of Entitlement (PoEs) for the maximum processor core capacity available to an eligible sub-capacity product when deployed in an eligible virtualization environment. This is also referred to as sub-capacity or virtualization capacity licensing.

Customers must use the IBM License Metric Tool unless they meet the exceptions described in the Attachment.

For information regarding PVU sub-capacity licensing, including terms and IBM License Metric Tool ordering information, go to the Passport Advantage Virtualization Capacity (Sub-capacity) Licensing website.

Sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions

To be eligible for sub-capacity pricing, the machine on which the eligible products are installed and running must be eligible for sub-capacity pricing terms and conditions. Software pricing, at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, apply when running:

  • AIX 5L™ V5.1, or later, on an IBM System p 690 or equivalent partition-capable operating system and machine.
  • OS/400® V5R1, or later, running on an IBM System i®.
  • Linux running in an LPAR under AIX 5L V5.1 or OS/400 V5R1, or in a partition on an equivalent partition-capable operating system and server.

Sub-capacity pricing for eligible products is based on the current program pricing methodology, but the number of processors will be determined based on the sum of processors for all partitions where the program is defined (used). To obtain pricing at less than full machine capacity for eligible products, you are required to:

  • Install and use, when available, IBM's license use management program, which installs with eligible IBM programs.
  • Install available updates to the operating system and eligible products such that license use can be accurately managed.
  • Determine if the use of sub-capacity pricing terms results in a reduced requirement for entitlements; you can reallocate the entitlement difference by distributing entitlements across a larger or different set of systems, or reserve them for future growth. There will be no refunds for these freed up entitlements. Subscription, Software Maintenance and support volumes, and entitlements for existing contracts will continue at the same levels as the acquired licenses.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX® V5.3, AIX V6.1, and AIX V7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type smitty esa_main, and select Configure Electronic Service Agent. In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. For more information and documentation on how to configure and use Electronic Service Agent, go to the IBM Electronic Support website.

The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for organizations that are Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent™ tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24x7 monitoring and reporting mean human intervention is not required to report errors.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to securely transmit either through the internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem to provide organizations a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into an organization's system.

For additional information, go to the IBM Electronic Service Agent website.

More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBMid entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the IBM Electronic Support page.

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBMid. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, you are able to see search results that apply specifically to your systems.
