Multiple enhancements for POWER7 and POWER7+ servers include new activations, a PureFlex solution, SR-IOV, Easy Tier function, an additional Ethernet adapter, expanded SAS adapter support, and more.

IBM is announcing new mobile-enabled processor activation feature codes that are orderable with the initial shipment of Power 770 (9117-MMD) and Power 780 (9179-MHD) servers. These new feature codes allow you to purchase static processor activations, which can then be converted to mobile processor activations at no charge when you are ready to implement Power Enterprise Pools. These new mobile-enabled feature codes allow you to purchase mobile-enabled processor activations and avoid the additional cost that is associated with the conversion of static to mobile processor activations. These new feature codes will initially deliver the same capability as a static processor activation until you take the necessary steps to convert them to mobile processor activations.

SR-IOV is supported for NIC workloads with the feature EN0H and EN0K adapters or the feature EN10 and EN11 integrated multifunction cards (IMFCs) on the POWER7+ 770 or 780 server with the latest 7.8 firmware on the server. SR-IOV can provide simple virtualization without VIOS with greater efficiency and also provide quality of service controls. SR-IOV can also be combined with VIOS to provide higher virtualization function as well as quality of service controls. All four Ethernet ports of these adapters or IMFCs can use SR-IOV.

An additional 4-port Ethernet adapter with 10Gb and 1Gb ports is announced for the these POWER7+ servers: Power 710, 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, 770, and 780 servers and PowerLinux™ 7R1, 7R2, and 7R4. The adapter should be ordered as feature EN0K for full-high PCIe slots and as feature EN0L/EL3C for low-profile slots. Feature EN0K, EN0L, and EL3C should be ordered when using active copper twinax cabling for the 10Gb ports instead of optical cabling. The adapter supports NIC and FCoE workloads. SR-IOV is supported on the POWER7+ 770 or 780 servers.

Two IMFCs are announced for the Power 770 and 780 "C" and "D" models, providing four Ethernet ports, one serial port, and two USB ports. All four of the Ethernet ports can be 10Gb Ethernet ports, and two of them support the lower-cost CAT6 RJ45 cabling (10G-BaseT capability). The other two 10Gb ports use either active copper twinax (#EN10) or SR fiber optic (#EN11) cabling. These new IMFC options (#EN10, #EN11) are added to the existing 770 and 780 IMFC options (#1768, #1769). SR-IOV is supported on the POWER7+ 770 and 780 servers.

The Easy Tier function is announced for the feature EJ0L PCIe Gen 3 large cache SAS adapters. Conceptually, this function is like the Easy Tier function found in the IBM Storage products such as the DS8000®, Storwize® V7000, or SVC, but implemented just within the Power Systems servers and their I/O drawers. Hot data is automatically moved to solid-state drive (SSD) and cold data is automatically moved to disk (HDD) in an AIX, Linux™, or VIOS environment. No user application coding is required. (IBM i already has a similar tiering function available across all SAS controllers.)

Clients commonly have this hot/cold characteristic for their data. It is typical for 10% - 20% of the data to be accessed 80% - 90% of the time. This is called the "hot" data. If you can get the hot data onto SSDs, it can dramatically improve the performance of I/O-bound applications. By keeping the cold data on HDDs, the total cost per gigabyte of the solution can be minimized. You can end up total cost per gigabyte of the solution can be minimized. You can end up with high I/O performance at a very reasonable price. By avoiding the need for lots of HDD arms for performance, you can reduce the number of I/O drawers, maintenance, rack/floor space, and energy.

Previously announced PCIe Gen 3 adapters (January 2014) and the Gen 2 SAS adapter (October 2013) are now supported for SSD and HDD attachment on more models.

  • The PCIe Gen 3 huge write cache SAS adapter (#EJ0L) is now also supported on the Power "D" models of the Power 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, 770, and 780 servers and PowerLinux 7R2 and 7R4 servers. Support is also added for the "C" model of the Power 770 and 780 servers. Previously, support was announced only on the Power 795 server.
  • The PCIe Gen 3 zero write cache SAS adapter (#EJ0J/#EJ0M/#EL3B) is now also supported on the Power "D" models of the Power 710, 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, 770, and 780 servers and PowerLinux 7R1, 7R2, and 7R4 servers. Support is added for the "C" model of the Power 770 and 780 server. Feature EJ0M or EL3B is used in low-profile PCIe slots, and feature EJ0J is used in full-high PCIe slots. Previously, support was announced only on the Power 795 server.
  • The PCIe Gen 2 large write cache SAS adapter (#ESA3) for SSDs, and HDDs is now also supported on the "B" models of the Power 720, 740, 750, 770, and 780 servers. This adapter provides lower energy usage and lower cost than the predecessor PCIe Gen 2 feature 5913 SAS adapter.

The IBM Flash Adapter 90 is supported is expanded to cover more models. In addition to the existing Power 720, 730, 740, and 7R2 support, it is now supported on the Power 750, 760, 770, and 780 servers (8408-E8D, 9109-RMD, 9117-MMD, and 9179-MHD).

Support is enhanced for three sets of existing I/O features with IBM i 7.1 TR8. The 16 Gb Fibre Channel adapter (#EN0A/#EN0B) is now supported "natively," meaning without requiring VIOS. Plus IBM i 7.1 TR8 now can support the IMFC (#EN10/#EN11) and Ethernet adapters (#EN0H/#EN0J) without requiring VIOS by using SR-IOV where SR-IOV is available. Previously, this I/O was supported by IBM i only through VIOS.

Mobile-enabled processor static activation feature codes can be ordered with the initial shipment of Power 770 (9117-MMD), Power 780 (9179-MHD), and Power 795 (9119-FHB) servers. These feature codes allow you to purchase static processor activations, which can be converted to mobile processor activations at no charge whenever you are ready to implement Power Enterprise Pools. This provides a cost savings compared to the previously announced structure of purchasing the existing regular static activations and then purchasing conversions to mobile activations. It also allows you to receive a single-priced invoice instead of two invoices for processor activations (an initial invoice plus an MES conversion invoice).

Mobile activations cannot be purchased with an initial server order because the association with a pool and its HMC has not been established at that point in time. Conversions of mobile-enabled static to mobile activations are ordered exactly like the current conversions of static conversions to mobile activations. This new ordering option is for processor cores. No similar announcement for mobile-enabled static memory activations is made because there is no price advantage for purchasing the conversion with the initial shipment.

The new mobile-enabled processor core activations are:

  • Feature EPMC for the Power 770 (9117-MMD) 4.22 GHz (#EPM0)
  • Feature EPMD for the Power 770 (9117-MMD) 3.8 GHz (#EPM1)
  • Feature EPHL for the Power 780 (9179-MHD) 4.42 GHz (#EPHO)
  • Feature EPHM for the Power 780 (9179-MHD) 3.72 GHz (#EPH2)
  • Feature 4715 for the Power 795 (9119-FHB) 4.0 GHz (#4700)
  • Feature 4725 for the Power 795 (9119-FHB) 3.7 GHz (#4702)

There is one processor core activation per feature code.

SR-IOV

SR-IOV is supported for NIC workloads with specific SR-IOV-capable I/O on specific servers running the latest level of firmware and with specific operating system levels. SR-IOV can provide simple virtualization without VIOS with greater server efficiency as more of the virtualization work is done in the hardware and less in the software. SR-IOV can also provide bandwidth quality of service (QoS) controls to help ensure that client-specified partitions have a minimum level of Ethernet port bandwidth and thus improve the ability to share Ethernet ports more effectively.

As a QoS example, assume there are three partitions: Partition A, B, and C. If Partition A is assigned a minimum of 20% of the bandwidth of a port, Partitions B and C cannot use more than 80% of the bandwidth unless Partition A is using less than 20%. Partition A can use more than 20% if bandwidth is available. This applies to outbound NIC traffic from the port. It does not apply to inbound NIC traffic into the port, but remember that these ports run in full duplex and thus QoS for outgoing traffic remains in effect even with high levels of inbound NIC traffic.

SR-IOV is considered simple virtualization and does not include higher-level virtualization functions provided by VIOS such as Live Partition Mobility. SR-IOV can optionally be combined with VIOS to leverage VIOS's higher level of functionality, but continue to provide bandwidth QoS. The portion of the Ethernet port's bandwidth controlled by VIOS would use software virtualization.

SR-IOV is supported by:

  • AIX 7.1 TL3 SP2, or later
  • AIX 6.1 TL9 SP2, or later
  • IBM i 7.1 with TR8, or later
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 SP3
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5
  • VIOS 2.2.3.2, or later

The following Power I/O support SR-IOV:

  • PCIe2 4-port (10Gb FCoE and 1GbE) SR&RJ45 Adapter (#EN0H)
  • PCIe2 4-port (10Gb FCoE and 1GbE) SFP+Copper and RJ4 Adapter (#EN0K)
  • Integrated Multifunction Card with 10GbE RJ45 and Copper Twinax (#EN10)
  • Integrated Multifunction Card with 10GbE RJ45 and SR Optical (#EN11)

Each of these adapters or IMFCs have four ports, and all four ports are enabled with SR-IOV function. The entire adapter or IMFC (all four ports) is configured for SR-IOV or none of the ports is. The client can chose to configure as SR-IOV and assign 100% of a port to one partition.

The POWER7+ 770 (9117-MMD) or 780 (9179-MHD) server or Power ESE (8412-EAD) server with the latest 7.8 firmware is provided SR-IOV NIC support with the above hardware and software. The feature EN0H and EN0K adapter requires a PCIe Gen 2 slot for this function. A maximum of one IMFC per processor drawer enclosure is supported.

IBM Manufacturing is not announcing the capability to preconfigure SR-IOV-capable I/O using SR-IOV. Such hardware will be shipped from IBM when ordered with a server in the same way adapters and IMFC have been shipped previously. The client will need to configure the SR-IOV capability. An HMC is required for this configuration.

Additional 10 GB Ethernet adapter - NIC plus FCOE capability

An additional 4-port Ethernet adapter with 10 Gb and 1 Gb ports is announced. The new PCIe2 4-port (10 Gb FCoE and 1 GbE) SFP + Copper & RJ45 Adapter (#EN0K, #EN0L, and #EL3C) is very similar to the existing PCIe2 4-port (10 Gb FCoE and 1 GbE) SR & RJ45 Adapter (#EN0H, #EN0J, and #EL38). They have identical function, but differ in the cabling used for the 10 Gb ports. Feature EN0K fits in a full-high PCIe Gen 2 slot and feature EN0L or EL38 fits in a low-profile PCIe Gen 2 slot. The adapter is supported in PCIe Gen 2 slots of the POWER7+ servers: Power 710, 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, 770, and 780 and PowerLinux 7R1, 7R2, and 7R4.

The adapter has two 10 Gb ports and two 1 Gb ports. This combination 10 Gb plus 1 Gb adapter can potentially help consolidate two or more adapters, saving PCIe slots and adapters. Further savings are possible if the Fibre Channel over Ethernet (FCoE) function is used. A FCoE-capable Ethernet adapter is also called a converged network adapter (CNA). A CNA port can run both Ethernet NIC traffic and simultaneously run Fibre Channel traffic (Fibre Channel over Ethernet). Handling both data streams (NIC and FC) makes it possible to reduce the number and type of adapters, cables, and switches in your data center.

Two ports of the feature EN0K, EN0L, or EL3C adapter are 1 Gb RJ45 ports using standard CAT5/CAT6A Ethernet cabling. The other two ports are 10 Gb CNA/FCoE ports using copper twinax cabling. They are SFP+ ports that do not include a transceiver. The transceivers are preinstalled on the active twinax copper cables, which are ordered using feature EN01 (1 meter), feature EN02 (3 meter), or feature EN03 (5 meter). Passive twinax copper cables are not supported.

Note that the entire adapter (all four ports) is owned by one partition. If owned by VIOS, then VIOS can then virtualize these ports to other partitions. NPIV support is provided through VIOS. SR-IOV support for NIC is announced for the POWER7+ 770 and 780 servers. SR-IOV support of the FCoE capability is not announced.

Minimum software support levels are:

  • AIX 7.1 TL3 and SP2, or later.
  • AIX 6.1 TL9 and SP2, or later.
  • IBM i 6.1, or later; VIOS required (NIC and FCoE supported).
  • IBM i 7.1 with TR8, or later, requires either VIOS or requires SR-IOV.
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4, or later.
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 Service Pack 3, or later.
  • VIOS 2.2.3.2.

Integrated multifunction card (IMFC)

Two additional IMFC options are announced for the Power 770 and 780 "C" and "D" models (9117-MMC/MMD and 9179-MHC/MHD). Compared to the existing IMFC (#1768/#1769), the newly added IMFC (#EN10/#EN11) offers these advantages:

  • Two RJ45 ports that offer 10 Gb speed (10 GBase-T). This is in addition to 1 Gb and 100 Mb speeds that are offered on the feature 1768 or 1769 IMFC. The 10 Gb capability can reduce cabling and switching costs. Note that though each individual Ethernet port is capable of 10 Gb, the IMFC combined bandwidth of the four ports is less than 40 Gb.
  • CNA capability or the ability to run NIC or FCoE, which can also reduce cabling and switching costs.
  • Support for SR-IOV NIC function on the POWER7+ 770 or 780 server, which can improve virtualization on the POWER7+ 770 or 780 servers.

One IMFC is supported per 770/780 processor enclosure. A feature EN10 or EN11 IMFC can replace a feature 1768 or 1769 or vice versa. Mixing different IMFC features on the same multiprocessor enclosure is supported. The IMFC is not hot plug so if replaced or added, downtime for that processor enclosure is required.

Like the existing IMFC (#1768/#1769), the new IMFC (#EN10/#EN11) has seven ports and does not use a PCIe slot. It provides four Ethernet ports, one serial port, and two USB ports. Two of the Ethernet ports support the lower-cost CAT6 RJ45 cabling (10 G-BaseT capability). The other two 10 Gb ports are SFP+ ports and use either active copper twinax (#EN10) or SR fiber optical (#EN11) cabling. Feature EN10 does not include transceivers in the SFP+ slots. Copper twinax transceivers are preinstalled on the active twinax copper cables, which are ordered using feature EN01 (1 meter), feature EN02 (3 meter), or feature EN03 (5 meter). Passive twinax copper cables are not supported. Feature EN11 includes optical transceivers in the SFP+ ports.

All four Ethernet ports of the IMFC are owned by one partition. If owned by VIOS, then VIOS can then virtualize these ports to other partitions. NPIV support is provided through VIOS. If using SR-IOV, then all four ports are configured under SR-IOV.

Note that IBM i supports the Ethernet ports of this card only through VIOS or through SR-IOV. IBM i does not use any IMFC Ethernet port as a console. IBM i natively supports the USB ports, but does not support the serial port. Usage of the serial port by AIX or Linux is supported for modem call home, TTY console, and snooping even if an HMC is attached to the server.

Minimum software support levels are:

  • AIX 7.1 TL3 or later.
  • AIX 7.1 TL2 and SP3, or later.
  • AIX 7.1 TL1 and SP7, or later.
  • AIX 6.1 TL9, or later.
  • AIX 6.1 TL8 and SP3, or later.
  • AIX 6.1 TL7 and SP7, or later.
  • IBM i 6.1 or later; VIOS required (NIC and FCoE supported).
  • IBM i 7.1 with TR8, or later, requires either VIOS or requires SR-IOV.

Easy Tier function for SAS RAID adapter

Easy Tier function is announced for the feature EJ0L PCIe Gen 3 large cache SAS adapters at no additional charge. This new level of function can easily provide significant performance boosts to disk I/O-bound applications at very reasonable cost and with simple implementation for AIX, Linux, or VIOS environments. IBM i already provides a similar tiering function across all SAS controllers without using this adapter-specific option. IBM i can also leverage this feature EJ0L function through VIOS.

To use the Easy Tier function, both disk (HDD) and SSD are configured in the same array. Three new RAID levels are introduced:

  • RAID-5T2 (2-tiered RAID 5)
  • RAID-6T2 (2-tiered RAID 6)
  • RAID-10T2 (2-tiered RAID 10)

Once the 2-tier RAID array is established, the feature EJ0L adapter automatically moves the most active (hottest) data to SSD and the least active data (coldest) to HDD within the 2-tier array. It does so by swapping bands of data based on gathered read and write statistics. The bands will typically be 1 MB or 2 MB in size. No user application coding is required. Like the other RAID arrays (0, 5, 6, 10), the 2-tier arrays support boot, hot spare, active/active, and so on.

Clients commonly have this hot/cold characteristic for their data. It is typical for 10% -20% of the data to be accessed 80% - 90% of the time for many environments. This is called the "hot" data, but its "temperature" typically decreases as it ages. Older data is typically used less frequently than more current data, so managing its movement to the more cost-effective media can be operationally burdensome without an Easy Tier function. The feature EJ0L does this automatically.

By keeping the hot data on SSD, you may be able to dramatically reduce the number of disk arms needed. You can probably increase the overall HDD capacity utilization since HDD IOPS decreases. You may also be able to use 10k RPM versus 15k RPM disk drives, further reducing the cost per gigabyte. Thus reductions in PCIe adapters, I/O drawers, hardware maintenance, rack/floor space, and energy/cooling are possible.

The Easy Tier function for the feature EJ0L is supported on POWER7+ servers with full-high PCIe slots. A feature EJ0L adapter pair supports HDD and SSD located in the 3 Gb feature 5802 I/O drawer and the 6 Gb EXP24S I/O drawer. The feature EJ0L has four SAS ports and can support SSD on up to two of the ports. Assuming EXP24S drawers in mode 1 are used, up to 96 SAS drives can be attached and up to 48 of these can be SSD.

Easy Tier levels requires:

  • AIX V7.1 with the 7100-03 Technology Level and Service Pack 3, or later (planned availability June 10, 2014)
  • AIX V6.1 with the 6100-09 Technology Level and Service Pack 3, or later (planned availability June 10, 2014) when used in the VIOS, VIOS 2.2.3.3, or later (planned availability June 10, 2014)
  • IBM i 6.1 or later; VIOS required (or use IBM i similar tiering function)
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.5, or later
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 Service Pack 3, or later.
  • VIOS 2.2.3.2

High-performance PCIe3 SAS adapters for SSD and HDD

Two PCIe3 SAS adapters are introduced on the POWER7+ models and the POWER7 770, 780 "C" models: one adapter with up to 12 GB write cache (#EJ0L) and the other with zero write cache (#EJ0J/#EJ0M). Write cache adapters can significantly improve performance of workloads with write activity. Zero cache adapters can offer a lower-cost configuration for applications with very modest write workloads. These two adapters are already available on the Power 795.

12 GB write cache SAS adapter

The PCIe3 12 GB Cache RAID SAS Adapter Quad-port 6 Gb x8 (#EJ0L) is an excellent solution for higher-performance I/O configurations of SFF (2.5-in) SAS SSDs or HDDs. It is a single-wide, full-height, short Gen 3 PCIe adapter with four 6 Gb connectors.

The adapter is the next-generation, large-write-cache SAS adapter, following the PCIe Gen 2 (PCIe2) 1.8 GB Cache RAID SAS Adapter (#5913/#ESA3). It offers significantly more performance and a higher maximum number of attached SAS drives. Compared to a pair of PCIe2 adapters (#5913/#ESA3), a pair of PCIe3 adapters (#EJ0L) can deliver more than two times more IOPS. A pair of PCIe3 adapters running RAID 0 SSDs can provide up to 750,000 read IOPS in PCIe Gen 1 slots or up to 980,000 read IOPS in PCIe Gen 2 slots. Or a pair of feature EJ0L adapters running RAID 5 can provide up to 850,000 read IOPSS in PCIe Gen 2 slots. The PCIe3 adapter supports twice as many SSDs and 33% more HDDs than the PCIe2 adapters.

The PCIe3 adapter effectively has up to 12 GB of write cache, which can significantly improve write performance. This is effectively about six times the cache size offered in the PCIe Gen 2 adapters. Physically, the PCIe3 adapter has about 3 GB of real cache, but compression built into the adapter effectively delivers up to 12 GB cache for typical workloads. Compared to a pair of PCIe2 adapters, a pair of PCIe3 adapters can handle 50% - 100% more RAID 5 writes.

With this April 2014 announcement, the PCIe3 feature EJ0L adapter is supported in the:

  • POWER7+ ("D") models of the Power 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, 770, and 780 and PowerLinux 7R2 and 7R4
  • "C" model of the Power 770 and 780 (9117-MMC and 9179-MHC)
  • Feature 5802 and 5877 12X PCIe I/O drawers
  • Feature 5803 and 5873 12X PCIe I/O drawers (announced January 2014)

It can control SAS drives located in a 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5803/#5802) or in a EXP24S I/O drawer (#5887/#EL1S). When controlling SAS drives in a 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5803/5802), at least one adapter of the 12 GB write cache adapter (#EJ0L) pair must be located in that I/O drawer.

A pair of adapters works together to deliver additional performance, redundancy, and write-cache protection. A single adapter configuration is not supported. A nonpaired PCIe SAS RAID indicator (#EJRU) is required by IBM Manufacturing to identify an AIX high-availability configuration when the 12 GB write cache adapter (#EJ0L) pairing is across two servers.

Each adapter in an adapter pair maintains cross-awareness of the other adapter to protect the write-cache contents. One or two SAS adapter-to-adapter (AA) cables are used to give you the highest possible connectivity. Four cable lengths are available: 0.6 m (#ECC0), 1.5 m (#ECC2), 3 m (#ECC3), and 6 m (#ECC4). The top one or two mini-SAS HD narrow connectors (labeled T3 and T2) on each card are used for this AA cable.

Two AA cables are required when one or two of the bottom ports are attached to I/O drawers. One AA cable is required when the bottom three ports are attached to I/O drawers. An AA cable is not required when all four connectors are needed for controlling I/O drawers. With all connectors attaching I/O drawers, the communication between the adapter pair is performed through the SAS fabric with the I/O drawer and cabling.

Up to four EXP24S I/O drawers (#5887/#EL1S) in mode 1 or mode 2 can be controlled by a pair of 12 GB write cache adapters (#EJ0L). A maximum of one 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5803/#5802) in mode 1 or mode 2 can be controlled by a pair of feature EJ0L SAS adapters. A maximum of one 12X PCIe I/O drawer and up to three EXP24s drawers can be controlled by a pair of feature EJ0L SAS adapters.

The eight ports of an adapter pair are treated as four pairs of ports. The bottom port (labeled T0) of each adapter of an adapter pair is connected to the same I/O drawer or to the same half of an I/O drawer, a specific range of SAS bays. Likewise, the next-to-bottom port (labeled T1) of each adapter pair is connected to one specific range of SAS bays. Similarly, the two ports labeled T2 of each adapter attach to the same range of bays or attach to each other through an AA cable. The top ports labeled T3 are cabled the same way as the T2 ports.

If a feature 5803 or 5802 drawer or an EXP24S drawer is in mode 2, then not all the SAS bays on the I/O drawer can be accessed by the adapter pair unless a second set of ports is used to access the other half of the drawer. If a second set of adapter ports is used to do this, then the maximum number of drawers per adapter pair is reduced.

If the I/O drawer is in mode 2, then half of its SAS bays can be controlled by one pair of SAS adapters such as a 12 GB write cache adapter pair (#EJ0L) and the other half can be controlled by a different 12 GB write cache adapter pair or by different SAS adapters. Note that for simplicity, IBM configurator tools such as eConfig assume that the SAS bays of an individual I/O drawer are controlled by one type of SAS adapter. As a client, you have more flexibility than eConfig understands. For example, an EXP24S drawer in mode 2 could have a pair of feature EJ0L adapters controlling half its SAS bays and a pair of feature 5913 adapters controlling the other half.

The maximum number of HDDs that can be controlled by one adapter pair depends on the number and type of I/O drawers and the drawers' mode setting. For example, the following numbers of HDDs can be controlled as indicated:

  • Up to 98 HDDs by using one feature 5803 drawer in mode 1 and three EXP24S drawers in mode 1
  • Up to 90 HDDs by using one feature 5802 drawer in mode 1 and three EXP24S drawers in mode 1
  • Up to 96 HDDs by using four EXP24S drawers in mode 1
  • Up to 48 HDDs by using two or four EXP24S drawers in mode 2
  • Up to 85 HDDs by using one feature 5803 drawer in mode 2 (half the bays) and three EXP24S drawers in mode 1
  • Up to 81 HDDs by using one feature 5802 drawer in mode 2 (half the bays) and three EXP24S drawers in mode 1
  • Up to 72 HDDs by using two EXP24S drawers in mode 2 and two EXP24S drawers in mode 1

All the SFF (2.5-inch) SAS HDDs that are supported in the feature 5803 or 5802 drawer and in the EXP24S (#5887) drawer are supported by the 12 GB write cache adapter (#EJ0L). The EXP12S (#5886) drawer and its 3.5-inch HDDs are not supported.

SSD configuration options and maximums are different from HDD usage. A 12 GB write cache adapter pair can support a maximum of 48 SSDs. All these SSDs must be attached to the bottom one or two sets of ports (T0 or T1). SSDs and HDDs can be mixed on the same adapter pair; however, SSDs and HDDs cannot be attached to the same set of adapter ports. For example, having SSDs on the T0 ports and HDDs on the T1 and T2 ports is supported, but having SSDs and HDDs on the same T1 port is not. If SSDs are placed in a feature 5803 or 5802 drawer, the drawer must be in mode 2.

The maximum combined number of SAS drives on an adapter pair is 98 by using 48 SSDs and 50 HDDs (50 = 26 in a #5803 and 24 in an EXP24S). Or the maximum combined number is 90 using 48 SSDs and 42 HDDs (42 = 18 in a #5802 and 24 in an EXP24S). Or the maximum would be 96 using four EXP24S drawers in mode 1 with 48 SSDs in two of the drawers and 48 HDDs in the other two drawers. Pairs of 12 GB write cache adapters support 387 GB and 775 GB SFF (2.5-inch) SSDs. The older 177 GB SFF SSDs are not supported on 12 GB write cache adapter pairs.

A maximum of two feature EJ0L adapters can be placed in the system unit of a POWER7+ 720 (6-core or 8-core), 740, 750, or 760 servers. A maximum of two feature EJ0L adapters can be placed in each processor enclosure of a POWER7+ 770 and 780 servers or "C" model 770 or 780. The 12 GB write cache adapter is a full-high adapter and cannot placed in a low-profile PCIe slot of the 710 or 730, PCIe Riser Card of the 720 or 740, or the R71 or R72.

When the feature EJ0L adapter is placed in a rack-mounted Power 720, 740, 750, 760, 770, 780, ESE, or PowerLinux 7R4 system unit, the system needs to be run in non-acoustic mode to increase fan speed. If the adapter is ordered with a server shipped from IBM Manufacturing, IBM plans to set the mode in this manner. But if the adapter is ordered via an MES order, the client needs to adjust the setting on the server. Because the increased fan speed increases the sound level, feature EJ0L is not supported in a Power 720 tower configuration. Placement in a 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5802, #5803, #5873, or #5877) does not impact fan speed.

A maximum of eight 12 GB write cache adapters (four pairs or eight halves of pairs or some combination) can be placed in a feature 5802 or 5877 12X PCIe I/O drawer. A maximum of sixteen 12 GB write cache adapters (eight pairs or 16 halves of pairs or some combination) can be placed in a feature 5803 or feature 5873 12X PCIe I/O drawer. Of these 16 adapters, a maximum of eight adapters can be on each half of the feature 5803 or 5873 drawer. The presence of other high-bandwidth adapters affects these maximums. For example, all feature EJ0L, ESA3, and 5913 SAS adapters should be combined into one total per drawer and the maximum of 8 or 16 applied.

Notes:

  • Placing the feature EJ0L adapters in PCIe Gen 2 slots increases the max bandwidth and the max IOPS that the adapter can achieve. However, for HDD-only workloads, this difference is not visible to client response time and is often not perceptible with modestly loaded SSDs.
  • The aggregate bandwidth of the feature 5803 or 5873 and 5802 or 5877 drawers and their PCIe Gen 1 slots will not be adequate for maximum 12 GB write cache adapter PCIe3 bandwidth, especially configurations with many 12 GB write cache adapters. However, this "over-configuring" may be desirable for configurations with large amounts of redundancy required.
  • Typical HDD usage often does not push bandwidth limits.
  • IOPS measurements are often not reduced by 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5803/#5873 and #5802/#5877) bandwidth for many client workloads.

Specific SAS cables are required to attach to the mini-SAS HD narrow connectors of the 12 GB write cache adapters. These cables are very similar to the mini-SAS HD cables introduced with the PCIe2 feature 5913, ESA1, and ESA2 SAS adapters but are slightly narrower. Narrower cable connectors are required for the PCIe3 SAS adapters because their four ports are very close together. The earlier mini-SAS HD non-narrow cables are not supported on the PCIe3 SAS adapters. The new narrow cables are supported on the PCIe2 SAS adapters.

To attach to the SAS drives in a 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5803/#5802), 0.6-meter HD SAS AT cables are used (#ECBB).

Notes:

  • If only one adapter of an adapter pair is located in the same 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5803/#5802) as the SAS bays it is controlling, then the relatively short AT cable length means the other adapter in the pair has to be located in a nearby feature 5803 or 5873 or 5802 or 5877 12X PCIe I/O drawer.
  • For simplicity, the IBM configurator tools assume for simplicity that if both adapters of an adapter pair are controlling SAS bays in the drawer, the adapters are located in that same feature 5803 or 5802 12X PCIe I/O drawer.

To attach to an EXP24S I/O Drawer (#5887), HD SAS YO or X cables are used. Five lengths of YO cables with mini-SAS HD narrow connectors are available: 1.5 m (#ECBT), 3 m (#ECBU), 6 m (#ECBV), 10 m (#ECBW) and 15 m (#ECBX). Four lengths of X cables with mini-SAS HD narrow connectors are available: 3 m (#ECBJ), 6 m (#ECBK), and 10 m (#ECBL) and 15 m (#ECBM). All of these cables support 6 Gb throughput except for the 15 meter length, which supports 3 Gb throughput.

The 12 GB write cache adapter supports a full set of protection options for its SAS drives. For AIX, Linux, and VIOS, this includes RAID 0, 5, 6, and 10, as well as operating system mirroring. For IBM i, this includes RAID 5 and 6 or operating system mirroring. Hot spare is also supported for AIX, IBM i, Linux, and VIOS. RAID sets with up to a maximum of 32 devices can be configured, depending on the environment. Easy Tier function (RAID 5T2, RAID 6T2, and RAID 10T2) is also available for AIX, Linux and VIOS on POWER7+ servers.

For additional performance, pairs of 12 GB write cache adapters support Active/Active protocols. This means that as long as there are at least two arrays configured per pair of adapters, additional I/O performance is gained by using the bandwidth of both adapters in the pair.

The 12 GB write cache adapter is supported by:

  • AIX 6.1, or later
  • IBM i 6.1, or later
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4, or later
  • SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 Service Pack 3, or later
  • VIOS

Refer to the feature EJ0L adapter description in the Sales Manual for the appropriate machine type-model for additional information such as Technology Level and Service Pack levels.

The SAS drives attached to a pair of 12 GB write cache adapters must use 528-byte sector formatting. The 512-byte sector (JBOD) formatted drives are not supported except when initially formatting to 528 bytes under AIX or Linux. Thus, any AIX, Linux, and VIOS drives that are not already formatted to 528-byte sectors need to be reformatted to 528 bytes before being added to a 12 GB write cache adapter RAID array.

Additional protection capabilities called T10 Data Integrity Function (DIF) are designed into Power Systems PCIe3 or PCIe2 SAS adapters. As a result, the formatting of HDD or SSD arrays on PCIe3 or PCIe2 SAS adapters differs slightly compared to the formatting on the older PCIe Gen 1 SAS adapters such as the feature 5904, 5906, 5908, 5805, or 5903 adapters.

Like the PCIe2 SAS adapters (#5913 or #ESA3) and unlike PCIe1 SAS adapters with write caches, batteries are not used in the PCIe3 SAS adapters to protect cache contents in case of a power failure. Built-in flash memory protection with capacitors is used instead. This avoids the need to change batteries as they age.

The 528-byte formatted SAS drives or arrays can usually be easily moved off of older PCIe1 SAS adapters to the PCIe3 or PCIe2 SAS adapter and will automatically be converted by the PCIe2 or PCIe3 SAS adapter. The word "usually" is used because AIX, Linux, and VIOS drives that were placed in an array that did not use the default 256,000 stripe size or that were individually included into an existing array will require reformatting before being moved to the PCIe3 or PCIe2 adapter.
Note: Moving drives off the PCIe3 or PCIe2 adapter and onto older PCIe1 or PCI-X SAS adapters requires the HDDs or SSDs to be reformatted before being placed on the older adapters.

One no-charge specify code is used with each EXP24S I/O Drawer (#5887/#EL1S) to communicate to IBM configurator tools and to IBM Manufacturing which mode setting, adapter, and SAS cable are needed. With this specify code, no hardware is shipped. The physical adapters, controllers, and cables must be ordered with their own chargeable feature numbers. There are more technically supported configurations than represented by these specify codes. IBM Manufacturing and IBM configurator tools such as eConfig only understand and support EXP24S configurations represented by these specify codes.

EXP24S I/O Drawer (#5887/#EL1S) specify codes used with the 12 GB write cache adapter (#EJ0L) include:

  • Feature EJRP mode 1 and two EJ0L features and two YO cables for AIX, IBM i, Linux, and VIOS
  • Feature EJRS mode 2 and four EJ0L features and two X cables (assumes the adapter pair running all SAS bays) for AIX, Linux, and VIOS
  • Feature EJRT: mode 2 and two EJ0L features and one X cable (the adapter pair only running half the SAS bays for future growth) for AIX, Linux, and VIOS

Two specify features assist IBM Manufacturing in determining how to cable a feature 5803 12X PCIe I/O drawer in mode 2 without customer-specified placement information. Specify code EJRW indicates a 12 GB write cache adapter pair connection to the left side of the 12X PCIe drawer. Specify code EJRX indicates the right half.

Zero write cache PCIe3 SAS adapter

The PCIe3 RAID SAS Adapter Quad-port 6 Gb x8 (#EJ0J/#EJ0M/#EL3B) is a very cost-effective solution for higher-performance I/O configurations of SFF (2.5 inch) SAS SSDs or HDDs with small or modest write workloads. The zero write cache adapter is a single-wide, short Gen 3 PCIe adapter with four 6 Gb connectors. Feature EJ0J has a full-high tail stock and feature EJ0M or EL3B has a low-profile tail stock.

The PCIe3 RAID SAS Adapter Quad-port 6 Gb x8 adapter is the next generation of zero write cache SAS adapters, following the feature ESA1 or ESA2 PCIe Gen 2 (PCIe2) RAID SAS Adapter with zero write cache. It offers more performance and a higher maximum of attached SAS drives. The new adapter can offer over twice as many IOPS as the previous zero write cache adapter and supports twice as many SSDs. The new adapter also supports HDDs and SSDs, while the previous zero write cache adapter supports only SSDs.

The new adapter has no write cache. For workloads that have limited writes, it is more cost effective than a pair of 12 GB write cache adapters (#EJ0L). The zero write cache adapter is less expensive than an adapter with write cache. In addition, you can use a single zero write cache adapter instead of the required pair for adapters with cache. This can save a PCIe slot. A pair of zero write cache adapters offers redundancy and can boost performance using Active/Active, but is optional.

The zero write cache adapter is a PCIe Gen 3 6 Gb adapter with four ports and can also be compared to the PCIe Gen 1 3 Gb adapter (#5901) with two ports. Both adapters have zero write cache. Where throughput is an important factor, the PCIe Gen 3 zero write cache adapter is a clear winner with 6 Gb ports instead of the 3 Gb ports of the feature 5901 adapter. In addition, the PCIe Gen 3 zero write cache adapter has twice as many ports.

The zero write cache adapter is supported in POWER7+ system units and in the "C" model 770/780 and supported in a 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5803/#5873 or #5802/#5877). It can control SAS drives located in a 12X PCIe I/O drawer (#5803/5802) or in an EXP24S I/O drawer (#5887/#EL1S). When a pair of zero write cache adapters controls SAS drives in a feature 5803 12X PCIe I/O drawer, at least one of the adapters must be located in that I/O drawer. When a single (nonpaired) zero write cache adapter controls SAS drives in a feature 5803 12X PCIe I/O drawer, it must be located in that I/O drawer.

Each adapter in a zero write cache adapter pair maintains cross-awareness of the other adapter through the SAS cabling to the I/O drawers. SAS AA cables are not used.

Up to four EXP24S I/O drawers in mode 1 or mode 2 can be controlled by a zero write cache adapter or adapter pair. If there are four EXP24S in mode 2, then only half of their bays can be controlled. A maximum of one EXP24S drawer in mode 4 can be controlled. A maximum of one feature 5803 or 5802 12X PCIe I/O drawer in mode 2 or mode 4 can be controlled by a zero write cache adapter or pair of adapters. A feature 5803 or 5802 12X PCIe I/O drawer in mode 1 is not supported. EXP24S drawers and feature 5803 or 5802 drawers cannot be controlled by the same zero write cache adapters or pair of adapters.

If configured as an adapter pair, the eight ports of the adapter pair are treated as four pairs of ports. The bottom port (labeled T0) of each adapter of an adapter pair is connected to the same I/O drawer or to the same half of an I/O drawer -- a specific range of SAS bays. If an I/O drawer is in mode 2, then half of its SAS bays can be controlled by one zero write cache adapter or pair of adapters and the other half can be controlled by different SAS adapters. Note that for configurator simplicity, IBM configurator tools such as eConfig assume the SAS bays of an individual I/O drawer are controlled by one type of SAS adapter. As a client, you have more flexibility than eConfig understands. For example, technically, an EXP24S drawer in mode 2 could have a zero write cache adapter controlling half its SAS bays and a 12 GB write cache adapter pair controlling the other half.

If an I/O drawer is in mode 4 and controlled by a zero write cache adapter or pair of adapters, IBM does not support any mixing of other adapters or adapter types on the drawer. This is both a technical statement and a configurator statement.

The maximum number of HDDs that can be controlled by one adapter or adapter pair depends on the number and type of I/O drawer and the drawer's mode setting. For example, the following numbers of HDDs can be controlled as indicated:

  • Up to 26 HDDs by using one feature 5803 drawer in mode 2 or mode 4
  • Up to 96 HDDs by using four EXP24S drawers in mode 1
  • Up to 18 HDDs by using one feature 5802 drawer in mode 2 or mode 4
  • Up to 48 HDDs by using two or four EXP24S drawers in mode 2
  • Up to 24 HDDs by using one EXP24S drawer in mode 4
  • Up to 70 HDDs by using two EXP24S drawers in mode 1 and one EXP24S drawer in mode 2

All the SFF (2.5-inch) SAS HDDs that are supported in the feature 5803 or 5802 12X PCIe I/O drawer and in the feature 5887 EXP24S I/O drawer are supported by the zero write cache adapter. The feature 5886 EXP12S drawer and its 3.5-inch HDDs are not supported.

SSD configuration options and maximums are different from HDD usage. A zero write cache adapter or adapter pair can support a maximum of 48 SSDs. All these SSDs must be attached to the bottom one or two sets of ports (T0 or T1). SSDs and HDDs can be mixed on the same adapter or adapter pair; however, SSDs and HDDs cannot be attached to the same adapter port. For example, SSDs on the T0 ports and HDDs on the T1 and T2 ports is supported, but having SSDs and HDDs on the same T1 port is not. If SSDs are placed in a feature 5803 or 5802 12X PCIe I/O drawer, the drawer must be in mode 2.

The maximum combined number of SAS drives on an adapter pair is 96 by using 48 SSDs and 48 HDDs in an EXP24S drawer in mode 1.

The zero write cache adapter supports 387 GB and 775 GB SFF (2.5-inch) SSDs. The older 177 GB SFF SSDs are not supported on the adapter.

A maximum of two adapters can be placed in system unit of the POWER7+ 710, 730, 7R1, and 7R2. A maximum of two adapters can be placed in the full-high PCIe slots of the POWER7+ 720 (6-core or 8-core) or 740 PCIe, plus, if using a PCIe Riser Card (#5685), an additional two low-profile adapters can be used, bringing the total to four in the system unit.

A maximum of six adapters are supported in the POWER7+ 750, 760, or 7R4 system unit. A maximum of six adapters are supported in the "C" and "D" models of the Power 770 or 780 processor enclosures.

A maximum of 20 zero write cache adapters can be placed in a feature 5803 or 5873 12X PCIe I/O drawer. A maximum of 10 zero write cache adapters can be paced in a feature 5802 or 5877 12X PCIe I/O drawer.

When the feature EJ0J, EJ0M, or EL3B adapter is placed in a rack-mounted Power 710, 720, 730, 740, 750, 760, 770, 780, ESE, or PowerLinux 7R1, 7R2, or 7R4 system unit, the system needs to be run in non-acoustic mode to increase fan speed. All of these support 6 Gb throughput except the 15 m cables which support 3 Gb.

The SAS drives attached to a zero write cache adapter must use 528-byte sector formatting. The 512-byte sector (JBOD) formatted drives are not supported, except when initially formatting to 528 bytes under AIX or Linux. Thus, any AIX, Linux, and VIOS drives that are not already formatted to 528-byte sectors will need to be reformatted to 528 bytes before being added to a zero write cache adapter RAID array.

Additional protection capabilities called T10 Data Integrity Function (DIF) are designed into Power Systems PCIe3 or PCIe2 SAS adapters. As a result, the formatting of HDD or SSD arrays on PCIe3 or PCIe2 SAS adapters differs slightly compared to the formatting on the older PCIe Gen 1 SAS adapters such as the feature 5904, 5906, 5908, 5805, or 5903 adapters.

The 528-byte formatted SAS drives or arrays can usually be easily moved off of older PCIe1 SAS adapters to the PCIe3 or PCIe2 SAS adapter and will automatically be converted by the PCIe2 or PCIe3 SAS adapter. The word "usually" is used because AIX, Linux, and VIOS drives that were placed in an array that did not use the default 256,000 stripe size or that were individually included into an existing array will require reformatting before being moved to the PCIe3 or PCIe2 adapter.
Note: Moving drives off the PCIe3 or PCIe2 adapter and onto older PCIe1 or PCI-X SAS adapters requires the HDDs or SSDs to be reformatted before being placed on the older adapters.

One no-charge specify code is used with each EXP24S I/O Drawer (#5887) to communicate to IBM configurator tools and to IBM Manufacturing which mode setting, adapter, and SAS cable are needed. With this specify code, no hardware is shipped. The physical adapters, controllers, and cables must be ordered with their own chargeable feature numbers. There are more technically supported configurations than represented by these specify codes. IBM Manufacturing and IBM configurator tools such as eConfig only understand and support EXP24S configurations represented by these specify codes.

EXP24S I/O Drawer (#5887/#EL1S) specify codes used with the zero write cache adapter (#EJ0J) include:

  • Feature EJR1 mode 1 and one EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 feature and one YO cable for AIX, IBM i, Linux, and VIOS
  • Feature EJR2 mode 1 and two EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 features (paired) and two YO cables for AIX, IBM i, Linux, and VIOS
  • Feature EJR3 mode 2 and two EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 features (paired) and two X cables for AIX, Linux, and VIOS
  • Feature EJR4 mode 2 and four EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 features (two pair) and two X cables for AIX, Linux, and VIOS
  • Feature EJR5 mode 4 and four EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 features (nonpaired) and two X cables for AIX, Linux, and VIOS
  • Feature EJR6 mode 2 and one EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 feature and two YO cables for AIX, Linux, and VIOS
  • Feature EJR7 mode 2 and two EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 features (nonpaired) and two YO cables for AIX, Linux, and VIOS

All of the above EXP24S specify codes assume the adapter or adapter pair is controlling all of the SAS bays in the drawer. But to communicate a need for a partial configuration where the adapter or adapter pair is running a portion of the SAS bays, leaving the option for future growth, the following specify codes are used:

  • Feature EJRA mode 2 and one EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 feature (paired) and one YO cable (half of #EJR3)
  • Feature EJRB mode 2 and two EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 features (paired) and one X cable (half of #EJR4)
  • Feature EJRC mode 4 and one EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 feature and one X cable (1/4 of #EJR5)
  • Feature EJRD mode 4 and two EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 features and one X cable (1/2 of #EJR5)
  • Feature EJRE mode 4 and three EJ0J/EJ0M/EL3B3 features and two X cables (3/4 of #EJR5)

Two specify features assist IBM Manufacturing in determining how to cable a feature 5803, 5802, or EL36 12X PCIe I/O drawer in mode 2 without customer-specified placement information. Specify code EJRY indicates a zero write cache adapter pair connection to the left side of the 12X PCIe drawer. Specify code EJRZ indicates the right half.

Expanded support of PCIE Gen 2 SAS adapter

Support for the refreshed PCIe Gen 2 SAS adapter (#ESA3) is expanded to include more models. The April 2014 announcement adds "B" model Power 720, 740, 750, 770, and 780.

The feature ESA3 adapter is now supported on the:

  • PowerLinux 7R2 "S" and "T" models (8246-L1S and 8246-L1T) (12X PCIe drawer only)
  • PowerLinux 7R4 (8248-L4T)
  • Power 720 (6-core and 8-core) "B", "C", "D" models (8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D)
  • Power 730 "C" and "D" models (8231-E2C and 8231-E2D) (12X PCIe drawer only)
  • Power 740 "B", "C", "D" models (8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, 8205-E6D)
  • Power 750 "B", "D" models (8236-E8B, 8408-E8D)
  • Power 760 "D" model (9109-RMD)
  • Power 770 "B", "C", "D" models (9117-MMB, 9117-MMC, 9117-MMD)
  • Power 780 "B", "C", "D" models (9179-MHB, 9179-MHC, 9179-MHD)

The PCIe2 1.8 GB Cache RAID SAS Adapter (#ESA3) was originally announced October 7, 2013, for just four Power Systems models. More model support was announced in January 2014. Refer to Hardware Announcement ZG13-0293, dated October 7, 2013 for configuration usage details.

Feature ESA3 adapter has a lower cost and is more energy efficient than the feature 5913 SAS adapter, yet it has the same performance and function.

Feature ESA3 is always plugged in pairs of ESA3.

Electronic Service Agent™ and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to IBM Systems customers. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support all at no additional cost to you.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX 5.3, AIX 6.1, and AIX 7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type "smitty esa_main", and select "Configure Electronic Service Agent." In addition, ESA now includes a powerful Web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single Internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled customers to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the "symptoms," diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24x7 monitoring and reporting mean no more dependence on human intervention or off-hours customer personnel when errors are encountered in the middle of the night.

Security:

The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to securely transmit either via the Internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem to provide customers a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into a customer's system. For additional information, refer to IBM Electronic Service Agent

More accurate reporting: Since system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support center in conjunction with the service request, customers are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBM ID entered during activation, customers can view system and support information in the "My Systems" and "Premium Search" sections of the Electronic Support website at

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with the customer's IBM ID. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledgebase. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, customers are able to see search results that apply specifically to their systems.
