Overview

Top rule

IBM Cloud Infrastructure Center is built on OpenStack. It provides simplified infrastructure management for compute, network, and storage resources and cloud deployments for z/VM-based Linux virtual machines that run on IBM Z and IBM LinuxONE platforms. Cloud Infrastructure Center enables users to scale and shrink virtual machine resources on an as-needed basis. It provides the virtual infrastructure resources in the cloud.

Cloud Infrastructure Center:

  • Improves administrator productivity and simplifies the lifecycle management of Linux virtual machines and related resource-bindings on IBM Z and LinuxONE servers.
  • Uses open standards and can be valuable for most industries.
  • Delivers the foundation for IBM Z and LinuxONE servers to provide scalable IaaS Cloud management based on OpenStack technology. This includes the integration with higher-level Cloud automation tools, such as IBM Cloud Automation Manager, VMware vRealize Automation (vRA), and vRealize Orchestration (vRO).
  • Provides a consistent, industry-standard user experience to define, instantiate, and manage the lifecycle of virtual infrastructure, deployment of images (operating system and applications), and policies to maximize resource utilization.

Cloud Infrastructure Center requires no specific skills from the user and minimal skills from the cloud administrator who manages the virtual infrastructure and therefore, assists in accelerating workload deployments on IBM Z and LinuxONE servers. Cloud Infrastructure Center provides the same usage and skill requirements as other IaaS offerings on other platforms.

With its built-in OpenStack core component, Cloud Infrastructure Center is based on the de facto industry standard for vendor-agnostic IaaS management. VMware vRA and vRO supports OpenStack APIs and consumes northbound OpenStack APIs from Cloud Infrastructure Center by using RESTful APIs to connect, provision, and orchestrate Linux for Z and LinuxONE servers. Together, this integration between VMware vRA and vRO, and Cloud Infrastructure Center increases flexibility, improves efficiency with a singular VMware skill set, and simplifies VM lifecycle management to provide a unified hybrid multicloud environment with a single pane of glass for IBM Z and LinuxONE servers.

Cloud Infrastructure Center enables infrastructure managers to capture and manage a library of virtual machine images to quickly deploy a virtual machine environment by launching a stored image from the library, instead of manually recreating a virtual machine image. The centralized image management enables infrastructure managers and administrators to migrate and move images to available systems to expedite deployment.

Cloud Infrastructure Center provides:

  • Comprehensive cloud management for IBM Z and LinuxONE servers that run z/VM
  • Enablement for a z/VM-based, software-defined infrastructure
  • Integration with multicloud automation tooling by IBM and other vendors

Cloud Infrastructure Center delivers the following capabilities:

  • Provisioning of new workloads easily into an on-premises Cloud via a self-service portal
  • Fast provisioning of virtualized infrastructure to be consumed by OpenShift
  • Automated configuration of I/O and network resources
  • Image management that includes virtual machine image capture, catalog and deployment
  • Multi-tenancy support
  • Easy integration into higher level Cloud automation and orchestration tools
  • Federation of an on-premises Cloud with other OpenStack Clouds via standard OpenStack APIs provides a multi-region Cloud.

IBM Cloud Infrastructure Center can be of interest for clients who currently run the z/VM Cloud Manager Appliance (CMA) or the z/VM Cloud Connector .

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
