IBM Spectrum Scale Data Access Edition offers a new option for licensing IBM Spectrum Scale. Offered with a terabyte metric, this edition does not require you to separately purchase client, server, or FPO licenses. Instead, you can simply license the total storage capacity managed by IBM Spectrum Scale.

IBM Spectrum Scale Data Access Edition delivers the functionality needed to store and access data through all supported protocols. It also includes quotas, snapshots, administrative GUI, compression, quality of service (QoS) control, and filesets. IBM Spectrum Scale Data Access Edition includes the ability to create optimized tiered storage pools and information lifecycle management tools for simplified data management. It delivers all of the function available today in IBM Spectrum Scale Standard Edition.

Industry-leading performance and storage efficiency

IBM Spectrum Scale V5 delivers significant enhancements in performance and administrative simplicity with capabilities that are designed to take advantage of the performance of the newest, fastest generation of storage hardware. For select workloads running on an NSD server, the number of operations per second is improved approximately three to five times. This version also helps reduce latency by adopting a protocol that supports sending of messages directly to server memory, eliminating the need for the back-and-forth communication previously required to access data.

The settings for several critical system parameters are now automated, providing optimal tuning for various kinds of workloads. This will enable easier setup and improved performance with less manual configuration. Manual override of the automated settings is readily available for users who prefer to select their own settings.

To better reflect modern storage and workloads, and to further optimize performance for both large and small block sizes, the new default block size is 4 MB, replacing the previous 256 KB default. To better support smaller file sizes, subblock size is variable, depending on the chosen block size. In most laboratory test cases, this configuration showed improved performance simultaneously for both small and large block size workloads compared to the previous version.

Beginning with IBM Spectrum Scale V5, file compression supports two compression libraries, zlib and LZ4. zlib is intended primarily for cold data and favors saving space over read-access speed. LZ4 is intended primarily for active data and favors read-access speed over maximized space saving. For applications with usage patterns that are predominantly read-only compressible files, LZ4 compression can offer significant performance gains in addition to space savings. Administrators can create policies that select a compression library based on the access characteristics of the file to be compressed, with file-level granularity.

Efficient user interface

A powerful GUI simplifies many storage administrator tasks and delivers monitoring capabilities. Built with the same modern user experience principles as other offerings in the IBM Spectrum Storage™ family, it is intuitive and easy to learn. Common administrator tasks, such as provisioning additional capacity, can be accomplished faster and without knowledge of the command-line interface. System health, capacity, and performance displays can be used to identify trends and respond quickly to any issues that may arise.

Integration into IBM Spectrum Control™ with a common design provides portfolio visibility that spans multiple IBM Spectrum Scale installations and may include other storage. Common interfaces and dashboards for health monitoring can deliver significant cost savings through reduced management time and improved staff productivity.

A command-line interface installation toolkit can quickly install IBM Spectrum Scale software, both base server management and protocol nodes.

Seamless integration with Hadoop workloads

IBM Spectrum Scale V5 offers seamless integration with Hadoop workloads without requiring changes to applications.

IBM Spectrum Scale Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) Transparency connector provides deep integration with HDFS. This enables applications that depend on HDFS to run seamlessly on top of IBM Spectrum Scale without any changes. This connector also enables IBM Spectrum Scale to support new Hadoop and HDFS features more quickly.

For organizations seeking to deploy the most efficient platform for big data analytics, machine learning, deep learning, and cognitive applications, IBM has partnered with Hortonworks to certify IBM Spectrum Scale with Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) on x86 and IBM Power® servers. HDP is the leading Hadoop and Apache Spark distribution that supports enterprises on their analytics journey. IBM and Hortonworks have collaborated on an optimized and integrated solution that has been validated against a comprehensive suite of integration test cases across the full stack of HDP components.

IBM Spectrum Scale also integrates with Apache Ambari, an open source Apache tool used by many Hadoop distributions for deploying and managing Hadoop. IBM Spectrum Scale is integrated with Ambari for BigInsights®, the IBM Open Platform for Apache Hadoop. This integration adds the ability to deploy, manage, monitor, upgrade, and debug IBM Spectrum Scale through the Ambari dashboard for BigInsights.

Enhanced usability

Unified file and object storage enables different applications or services to access the same data without moving or altering it. Data can be written as either file or object, and retrieved as either. Rather than use a copy and change gateway, IBM Spectrum Scale supports both protocols natively for higher performance and simplified administration. The common storage layer enables most of the IBM Spectrum Scale features, including authentication, encryption, and tiering for both object and file storage.

QoS support enables administrators to prioritize user data services over background or maintenance I/O requirements. Administrators can set throttle levels for services such as long-running restripe or other services that may impact users of the IBM Spectrum Scale cluster.

IBM Spectrum Scale Data Access Edition V5.0 is capable as of October 19, 2018, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. IBM Spectrum Scale Data Access Edition V5.0.2 is supported on the following servers:

Note: Microsoft is no longer providing support for Microsoft Windows Server 2008 x64. Therefore, IBM will be dropping this support effective April 30, 2019, in all IBM Spectrum Scale editions. Version 5.0.2 is the last release that will support Windows Server 2008 x64. Customers who want to use Server 2008 x64 will have to remain on version 5.0.2 or earlier, with a PTF level that is released before April 30, 2019.

When running on Z, the following are supported:

  • SLES 12, or later
  • Ubuntu Server 16.04.1, or later

For all platforms, if using the IBM Spectrum Scale GUI, RHEL 7 or SLES 12 is required.

When running Windows, the installation of Cygwin is required.

In order to support Hadoop workloads with IBM Spectrum Scale, the HDFS transparency connector is required and can be obtained from developerWorks®.

The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) applies for Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require client signatures.

Licenses under the IBM International Program License Agreement (IPLA) provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. Two charges apply: a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, see the IBM Software Support Handbook.

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect.

This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (by telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, through an announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. Software Subscription and Support does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.

Electronic Service Agent™ and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to organizations that have IBM Systems. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support, all at no additional cost to you.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX V5.3, AIX V6.1, and AIX V7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type smitty esa_main, and select Configure Electronic Service Agent. In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for organizations that are Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent™ tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24 x 7 monitoring and reporting mean human intervention is not required to report errors.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to securely transmit either through the internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem to provide organizations a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into an organization's system.

More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBMid entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the IBM Electronic Support page.

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBMid. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledge base. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, you are able to see search results that apply specifically to your systems.
