Overview

Organizations increasingly are deploying and migrating applications to public and private clouds to enable faster innovation and business agility. Cloud and mobile technologies are changing industries across all segments of life, but when business leaders embrace a cloud-first approach, they are rewarded with reduced operational costs, speeding up applications to market, and empowering developers to deliver new cognitive innovations.

To support the business goals of bringing agility and operational efficiency to their operations, enterprise IT adopts a hybrid cloud strategy. This:

  • Simplifies creation of the new generation of cloud-native workloads that support agile methodologies.
  • Simplifies migration of existing applications to cloud for cost optimization.
  • Enhances existing on-premises applications by integration with off-premises cloud services for those applications that are constrained to on-premises deployments.

During this transformation, enterprise IT should monitor the application server sprawl because management of these non-centralized environments can quickly add to cost and negate the benefits of cloud adoption.

To counter the increased cost of maintenance, WebSphere® Application Server not only delivers the same level of control for availability, performance, and security services across hybrid environments, but now provides a single view of assets, utilization, or service levels across the on-premises and cloud topologies.

Highlights

  • IBM® WebSphere Application Server in Bluemix® Dedicated. The WebSphere Application Server traditional enterprise system of record application in Bluemix Dedicated provides physically isolated hardware in an IBM data center.
  • WebSphere Application Server Migration Toolkit. The toolkit provides enhanced capabilities to move an existing application outside of the firewall and into WebSphere Application Server in Bluemix to ensure topology, security, and governance.
  • UrbanCode™ Continuous Integration and Delivery. This enables seamless automation of the configuration of WebSphere Application Server in Bluemix topologies to eliminate the risk of app failure due to incorrect setup, build, and delivery. It delivers innovations to the cloud faster and with consistency and governance through integration with UrbanCode Deploy.
  • WebSphere Connect enhancements. Continued enhancements to the WebSphere Connect capabilities bring the WebSphere Application Server traditional and WebSphere Liberty application servers to full equivalency. This is across all platforms, for API Documentation and Discovery, integration with Bluemix cloud services, and more.

The WebSphere Connect capabilities of WebSphere Application Server provide a platform to create innovative new offerings and extensions to WebSphere itself, which include the following:

  • WebSphere Application Server participation as part of IBM Cloud Product Insights Bluemix service. This service can communicate with on-premises WebSphere Application Server traditional and Liberty application servers to build a product inventory that is both private and secure. This inventory can then help reduce software entitlement costs by providing insights into WebSphere Application Server product usage, as displayed on a Bluemix dashboard. Eliminate or combine unused WebSphere Application Server entitlements and evaluate alternative pricing metrics, such as Virtual Processor Cores (VPC) monthly or cloud pay-as-you-go.

For more information on IBM Cloud Product Insights, refer to Software Announcement 217-123, dated March 7, 2017.

  • IBM Voice Gateway is a new offering that provides a valuable addition to call centers and telephony applications by integrating with select Watson™ services to improve the automated client experience and reduce costs. It can reduce the number of calls transferred to live operators, and also provide real time context and support to live operators to help expedite problem resolution.

For more information, refer to Software Announcement 217-145, dated March 14, 2017.

Microservice Builder Beta program

A new beta program, Microservice Builder, provides a turn-key approach with simple, step-by-step support that details how to create applications in a microservices framework. The goal of Microservice Builder is to greatly simplify the software delivery pipeline that enables continuous delivery of Dockerized microservices and provides developers with a frictionless application lifecycle from laptop through production. Microservice Builder intends to shorten the software delivery lifecycle for microservices from weeks, to days, to minutes.

IBM WebSphere eXtreme Scale for IBM Bluemix Container Service

WebSphere Application Server in Bluemix

For security, privacy, or performance reasons, many enterprises need their own cloud environment. With Bluemix Dedicated, business owners can have their own cloud, with physically isolated hardware, ready as soon as it is needed.

WebSphere Application Server in Bluemix Dedicated provides physically isolated hardware in an IBM data center. As an isolated and provisioned solution, this Bluemix environment is created just for owners. With the syndicated catalog, they can power their apps and services with a combination of WebSphere Application Server for Bluemix Dedicated, dedicated runtimes, dedicated containers and services, and also services from the public Bluemix catalog.

Migration to Bluemix with confidence

Many organizations plan on cloud migrations to achieve scalability, cost-efficiency, and higher application performance. Without guidance and tooling, migrating WebSphere applications to the cloud can be a complex process that requires careful planning and deliberation.

WebSphere Application Server Migration Toolkit now includes enhanced capabilities to move an existing application outside of the firewall and into WebSphere Application Server for Bluemix to ensure topology, security, governance, capacity, and tooling. Dependencies are identified and resolved by using IBM Best Practices. Use of these tools provides a migration path to WebSphere Application Server V9 and helps to eliminate risk of application transition issues or failure.

Traditional DevOps and the cloud

Urban Code Continuous Integration and Delivery allows users to seamlessly automate the configuration of WebSphere Application Server in Bluemix topologies. It helps to eliminate risk of app failure due to incorrect setup, build, and delivery and enables faster migration to the cloud with consistency and governance through integration with Urban Code Deploy.

UrbanCode Deploy leverages a WebSphere Application Server -- Configuration plugin to capture WebSphere configuration settings at the various scope levels, such as cell, cluster, node, and server. In addition, UrbanCode Deploy can use a DevOps-enabled toolchain (for example, Git, Maven, or Jenkins) to deliver apps with speed and reliability to WebSphere Application Server in Bluemix.

WebSphere Connect and related offerings

WebSphere Application Server continues to bring new features and functions to help applications extend to the cloud. With these new features and functions, you can protect applications while maintaining the agility and efficiency that the cloud provides. This approach brings cloud economics of software costs to on-premises offerings and enables truly hybrid deployment of assets through unified, on-premises cloud inventory, management, analytics, and billing.

The WebSphere Connect capabilities of WebSphere Application Server provide a platform to create innovative new offerings and extensions to WebSphere Application Server itself, which are part of the IBM Connect to Cloud set of offerings. Because of the flexibility and transparency that WebSphere Connect provides, these offerings can be made available as on-premises products, IBM Cloud services, or both.

IBM Cloud Product Insights

Cloud Product Insights is a Bluemix service that communicates with on-premises IBM software products to build a cross-product inventory and provide usage insights by collecting key metrics from each product. WebSphere Application Server, both WebSphere Application Server traditional and Liberty, provides the opportunity to integrate with this service. Cloud Product Insights service runs within Bluemix and receives information from the enabled on-premises IBM software products. This information is then shown within the service instance dashboard. To use the service, users must have an IBM Bluemix account and create the service in an organization and space. The product and usage information for their enabled on-premises products is securely stored and viewed within the scope or context of that unique service.

IBM Voice Gateway

Voice Gateway is a new offering that provides a way to integrate a set of orchestrated Watson services with a public or private telephone network using the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) provided by WebSphere Application Server. Voice Gateway enables direct voice interactions over a telephone with a cognitive, self-service agent, or the ability to transcribe a phone call between a caller and live agent in real time. This enables the ability to process the conversation with analytics for real-time agent feedback.

Microservice Builder Beta

As organizations undertake digital and mobile transformation, they seek tools and infrastructure to help them transform quickly. They often demand that these tools for transformation be provided by their application infrastructure provider. The tools help them to compose and release software more rapidly and predictably, which enables them to respond more effectively to their customers' needs.

Microservice Builder delivers a turn-key approach that facilitates the enterprise transformation through learning, building, running, and managing applications in a microservices framework. With step-by-step guidance provided by Microservice Builder, developers can easily learn about the intricacies of microservice apps, quickly compose and build innovative services, and then rapidly deploy them to various stages by using a pre-integrated DevOps pipeline. Microservice Builder includes programming model extensions to Java™ EE, defined by the MicroProfile.io collaboration, for writing Java-based microservices. Containerized apps created using Microservice Builder can then be deployed to Kubernetes-orchestrated Docker environments either on-premises or in the cloud. Microservice Builder provides users with end-to-end guidance that includes configuration, development, deployment, capacity planning, and monitoring to ensure a smooth microservices lifecycle from development to production.

Microservice Builder Beta includes:

  • Beta binaries to support building and testing environments for microservice apps
  • Low touch development to deployment experience with simplification of DevOps tasks
  • Ease of deployment to Bluemix using container services
  • Ease-of-problem diagnostics with Log Analytics and Monitoring
  • Support for single sign-on (SSO) for security authentication and authorization
  • A new landing page that supports end-to-end guidance to build Java microservices using extensions to Java EE defined by the MicroProfile.io collaboration

Microservice Builder Beta also provides access to IBM Spectrum™ Conductor for Containers, a Kubernetes-based Docker management system to simplify deployment on a single server or a pre-built Kubernetes cluster.

Authorized User

Authorized User is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. An Authorized User is a unique person who is given access to the program. The program may be installed on any number of computers or servers and each Authorized User may have simultaneous access to any number of instances of the program at one time. Licensee must obtain separate, dedicated entitlements for each Authorized User given access to the program in any manner directly or indirectly (for example, through a multiplexing program, device, or application server) through any means. An entitlement for an Authorized User is unique to that Authorized User and may not be shared, nor may it be reassigned other than for the permanent transfer of the Authorized User entitlement to another person.

Note: Some programs may be licensed where devices are considered users. In that case, the following applies. Any computing device that requests the execution of or receives for execution a set of commands, procedures, or applications from the program or that is otherwise managed by the program is considered a separate user of the program and requires an entitlement as if that device were a person.

Processor Value Unit (PVU)

PVU is a unit of measure by which the program can be licensed. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip (socket). A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found on the PVU licensing for Distributed Software page. Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage® Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms found on the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules page. If using full capacity licensing, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the program, except for those servers from which the program has been permanently removed. If using virtualization capacity licensing, licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules that can be found on the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules page.

* An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.

Notes

  • Some programs may require licenses for the program and what is being managed. In that case, the following applies. In addition to the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • Some programs may be licensed on a managed basis only. In that case, the following applies. Instead of the entitlements required for the program directly, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the processor cores managed by the program.
  • A few programs on an exception basis may be licensed on a referenced basis. In that case, the following applies. Rather than obtaining entitlements for the activated processor cores available to the program, licensee must obtain PVU entitlements for this program sufficient to cover the environment made available to the referenced program as if the program itself were executing everywhere the referenced program was executing, independent of the basis on which the referenced program is licensed.

Limited Use Socket

Limited Use Socket is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. A socket is electronic circuitry that accepts a processor chip. A server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities and that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or client devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example, a blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered itself a separate server. A virtual server is either a virtual computer created by partitioning the resources available to a physical server that complies with the requirements of the Sub-capacity Guide or the unpartitioned physical server. If Licensee's virtualization environment does not comply with the requirements of the Sub-capacity Guide, the entire physical server must meet all requirements in this license. Licensee must obtain Limited Use Socket entitlements for each socket on the virtual servers made available to the Program. The total number of sockets on any virtual server made available to the Program cannot exceed 4.

Statement of good security practices
Bottom rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a lawful, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
