Brief Description of Announcement, Charges, and Availability

     The 3800 Printing Subsystem Model 6 is an intermediate speed
Advanced Function Printing (AFP) fanfold printer that uses an
electrophotographic process to print up to 134 pages per minute. It
provides printing with a density of 240x240 dots (pels) per square
inch. There are two modes of operation: Compatibility Mode which
prints 3800 Model 1 applications with a minimum of change to the
application program, and Advanced Function Printing mode which prints
complex pages of image, text, graphics, and system printing
applications. The 3800 Model 6 will be field upgradable to a full
speed 3800 Printing Subsystem Model 3 at a later date.

o   The 3800 Model 6 can be ordered in one of three options.
    -   The base unit has a single channel attachment which can
        operate in either DCI or data streaming mode.
    -   The base unit with an Enhanced option (#3810) which includes
        a two-channel switch, accumulator (and expansion), and 256K
        bytes of additional raster pattern storage. Note: #3810 is
        not field installable.
    -   The base unit with any of the 3800 Model 3 special features.
        Note:  The Burster-Stacker-Trimmer (#1490) will be available
        July 1987 as a optional feature.
               All 3800 Model 3 features are available for field
        installation on the 3800 Model 6. All RPQs will be evaluated
        on an individual basis.

        .   Due to variability of OCR applications and readers, IBM
            advises that the customer evaluate the 3800 Model 6 OCR
            output in their application environment.
        .   Particular care should be taken when transferring OCR
            applications from the IBM 3800 Model 3 to the Model 6.
            Variations in print density and resolution should be
            thoroughly tested for reading compatibility before
            committing applications to the 3800 Model 6.

       General availability of the 3800 Printing Subsystem Model 6 is
planned for second quarter 1987.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
SPECIFIED OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
MACHINE REQUIREMENTS: A control unit position on a standard
S/370-type selector or block multiplexer channel on an IBM 4361,
4381, 308x, or 3090 system. The 3800 Model 6 runs in DCI or data
streaming mode.
PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS: Environments supported are:

            MVS/SP-JES2 Version 1 Release 3.4 or later
            MVS/SP-JES3 Version 1 Release 3.4 or later
            MVS/370 Data Facility Product Release 1.1 or later
        MVS/XA:

            MVS/SP-JES3 Version 2 Release 1.2 shipped after December
            28, 1984

       The 3800 Model 6 appears to the S/370 software interface as a
3800 Model 3, and thus requires no software changes. The customer
must define the 3800 Model 6 as a 3800 Model 3 to the system.

    Later releases may be used, unless otherwise announced.
       PSF/MVS can be installed by using System Modification Program
(SMP/4) Level 4.20 or higher, or System Modification Program Extended
(SMP/E) Release 3 or higher (5668-949)
       PSF/VM can be installed as an optional feature licensed
program using the INSTFPP EXEC. Refer to the VM/SP Installation Guide
(SC24-5237) for installation procedures using INSTFPP.
       PSF/VSE is installable using the Maintain System History
Program (MSHP).  In VSE/SP Version 2 Release 1, the job stream to
install PSF/VSE can be built using the product installation dialog of
the interactive interface.
o   Line printer mode (3800-1 compatibility mode)

COMPATIBILITY: The 3800 Model 6 uses the same external interfaces as
the 3800 Model 3.
PLANNING INFORMATION
CUSTOMER RESPONSIBILITIES: The customer must:
o   Allocate the appropriate space and electrical requirements to
    properly install the 3800 Model 6.
o   Ensure availability of the necessary supply items for operation
    of the 3800 Model 6, and to replenish/replace supplies as needed
    according to the maintenance agreement selected.

o   Provide the appropriate attachment cables.

INSTALLABILITY: The 3800 Model 6 will be installed by the IBM
National Services Division in approximately 23 hours.
OPERATOR TRAINING: An operator training package similar to the one
provided for other 3800 models will be shipped with the 3800 Model 6.
SECURITY, AUDITABILITY, AND CONTROL
       Security and auditability features of the IBM 3800 Printing
Subsystem Model 6 printer are the same as the 3800 Printing Subsystem
Model 3.
       User management is responsible for evaluation, selection, and
implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and
appropriate controls in application systems and communications
facilities.

Category A of the VPA Exhibit Z125-3343 with the following notation,
the 3800 Model 6 maximum discount allowed is 6 percent on quantities
of 7 or more.
CORPORATE SERVICE AMENDMENT: The 3800 Model 6 is an eligible machine
for the Corporate Service Amendment to IBM Maintenance Agreement. See
your IBM marketing representative for details.

reliable performance, the use of IBM supplies is recommended.
Supplies are purchase only items. The 3800 Model 6 is shipped with a
minimum quantity of supplies: IBM 3800 toner, IBM 3800 developer mix,
IBM 3800 splicing tape, and forms overlay kit.
