IBM® intends to deliver IBM WebSphere® Application Server enhancements to further simplify the organization's modernization journey by delivering an easy path for application modernization as well as operational modernization. Recent updates added support to deploy traditional WebSphere Application Server applications in a Docker container environment. IBM WebSphere Application Server Liberty already supports its use in a container environment.

With these recent enhancements, applications running in both the traditional WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Application Server Liberty, as entitled through IBM WebSphere Application Server Network Deployment, may be migrated to a containerized environment, such as IBM Cloud™ Private. These traditional WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Application Server Liberty applications, deployed in container environments, can progress towards operational modernization by taking advantage of resiliency features offered by a Kubernetes-based management model. Modernization lets organizations utilize a single skill set to manage diverse workloads that can help reduce total cost of ownership.

As you transition to Kubernetes-style management for modern workloads, you will still need to manage and secure existing workloads deployed in diverse environments, such as bare metal servers and virtual machines, that utilize high-availability topologies deployed either on-premises or in a public cloud.

Managing diverse environments introduces new complexities and cost exposures. To help reduce the cost of managing your diverse environments and deployment topologies, IBM intends to make available new features for WebSphere Application Server to manage diverse workloads on a single integrated dashboard. These features intend to further reduce total cost of ownership by delivering the following benefits:

  • Provide visibility to applications, and their dependencies, with easy-to-understand health status and context based actions for resolutions
  • Enable proactive problem determination for traditional WebSphere Application Server and WebSphere Application Server Liberty instances in a hybrid environment, leveraging management features of IBM Cloud Private, such as logging and monitoring services
  • Simplify management of cloud-native and traditional applications deployed in diverse environments from a single integrated dashboard

IBM intends to deliver enhancements to help improve security interoperability between traditional WebSphere Application Server and applications running as microservices in WebSphere Application Server Liberty, or other application servers, through the use of JSON Web Token (JWT). JWT provides an open, industry-standard method for representing claims securely between application instances. Use of JWT in WebSphere Application Server environments provides the following benefits:

  • Simplified core security capabilities that enable scale up and scale down of workloads
  • Seamless, secure integration between existing and new workloads

IBM intends to deliver IBM Cloud Application Platform, offering Virtual Processor Core (VPC)-based pricing metric, that will provide organizations better flexibility to mix and match the WebSphere Application Server family of products and private cloud-based platform solutions. The offering also intends to simplify usage tracking of WebSphere Application Server applications deployed using private cloud-based platforms, traditional server deployments, or public cloud.
