IBM Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern V2.0, extended to support PowerVM cloud groups, helps enable consistent provisioning and deployment of resourcesIBM United States Software Announcement 213-117March 12, 2013
IBM® Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern
Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern V2.0 extends IBM Web Application Pattern V2.0 to help reduce the amount of time cloud application writers would typically spend specifying, defining, and managing a WebSphere MQ messaging infrastructure required by their applications. The initial release of Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern was designed to be deployed into VMware ESX cloud groups. With the release of Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern V2.0.0.1, the deployment capabilities are extended to support PowerVM cloud groups. Application dependencies are identified by Web Application Pattern, and Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern can provide the means to automatically provision messaging resources to satisfy these dependencies when the application is deployed. Automatic provisioning removes the need for the application developer to perform these tasks. This consistent and repeatable cloud-deployed environment helps minimize the time required to put applications into production.

Businesses are under constant pressure to deliver new applications quickly in response to emerging opportunities. Shortening the length of time to develop and test applications is essential to minimizing this delivery time. Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern delivers repeatable provisioning and lifecycle management. Isolation of queuing resources can enable developers to focus on applications rather than infrastructure. Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern helps to consistently provision and deploy the resources required by the applications. The whole lifecycle of the messaging resources is controlled to help ensure all the WebSphere MQ queue managers, queues, topics, channels, and connections are created as required at deployment time, and subsequently removed when the application deployment is no longer needed. In addition to previous deployment into VMware ESX cloud groups, Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern now supports deployment into PowerVM cloud groups. Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern integrates into the Virtual Application Builder. It allows the messaging resources to be detected and defined for your applications. The application can then be deployed into either a PowerVM or VMware ESX cloud group, and messaging resources will be automatically provisioned and connected during the deployment. This automation can allow applications to be planned and defined in a common way, regardless of the hardware and technology to be used during the actual deployment. This extension to Web Application Pattern gives access to queuing resources directly from the Virtual Application Builder. No additional tools, interfaces, or scripts are needed to learn. The specified messaging resources are translated by Messaging Extension for Web Application Pattern into a dedicated set of WebSphere MQ objects. This helps to ensure that all relevant messaging resources are present in the application's deployment environment. Each application deployment has its own dedicated and isolated messaging resources, helping reduce the risk of applications unintentionally interacting. The number of PVU entitlements required is based on the processor technology (defined within the PVU table by processor value, brand, type, and model number at the website below) and the number of processors made available to the program. IBM continues to define a processor, for the purpose of PVU-based licensing, to be each processor core on a chip. A dual-core processor chip, for example, has two processor cores. The PVU table can be found at Licensee can deploy the program using either full capacity licensing or virtualization capacity (sub-capacity) licensing according to the Passport Advantage Sub-Capacity Licensing Terms (refer to the web page below). If using Full Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain PVU entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores* in the physical hardware environment made available to or managed by the Program, except for those servers from which the Program has been permanently removed. If using Virtualization Capacity licensing, Licensee must obtain entitlements sufficient to cover all activated processor cores made available to or managed by the Program, as defined according to the Virtualization Capacity License Counting Rules at * An activated processor core is a processor core that is available for use in a physical or virtual server, regardless of whether the capacity of the processor core can be or is limited through virtualization technologies, operating system commands, BIOS settings, or similar restrictions.
