IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3 and IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3 build on the functions available in ProtecTIER V3.2, and introduce the NFS backup interface. ProtecTIER V3.3 supports replication between a maximum of eight ProtecTIER systems using either the common information file system (CIFS) or NFS file system interface (FSI). Any one ProtecTIER FSI system is limited to a maximum of three target systems within the replication grid per replication policy.

Supported replication grid configurations for ProtecTIER OpenStorage and ProtecTIER virtual tape library (VTL) systems are unchanged with ProtecTIER V3.3.

ProtecTIER V3.3 also includes a fully automated, wizard-based ProtecTIER server code upgrade facility using the ProtecTIER Manager GUI designed to improve the code upgrade user experience. With the release of V3.3, software maintenance renewals for ProtecTIER can be automated through a services contract. Include feature 9000 on the software maintenance registration Product ID (PID) to indicate the desire to participate in this auto renewal process.

IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3 and IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3 are the follow-on products for ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.2 and ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.2.

ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition requires IBM System Storage TS7650G Deduplication Gateway hardware. ProtecTIER Appliance Edition requires IBM System Storage TS7650 ProtecTIER Deduplication Appliance hardware. Only backup data passed to ProtecTIER from NetBackup is eligible to utilize the optional OpenStorage interface.

The FSI interface in ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3 is only supported on the TS7650G Gateway model DD5. The FSI interface in ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3 is only supported on TS7650 Appliance model AP1 systems that were previously installed with the CIFS FSI option.

ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3 introduces FSI-NFS support for NAS backup environments. The ProtecTIER FSI interface is intended to be used for backup and restore of data sets using a backup application. Use of the ProtecTIER FSI interface for primary storage is not supported at this time. ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3 FSI-NFS support requires TS7650G Model DD5. ProtecTIER FSI support must be installed on the initial system order. Field conversions of existing VTL or OpenStorage systems to utilize the FSI function are not supported.

ProtecTIER systems may also be configured as a VTL system or as an OpenStorage interface system. At this time, a ProtecTIER system may only function as a VTL system, an OpenStorage interface system, or an FSI system; it cannot function as a combination of any two or three of these system types.

ProtecTIER Replication for FSI systems is supported between up to eight ProtecTIER FSI systems. However, any single ProtecTIER FSI system may only replicate to a maximum of three other ProtecTIER FSI systems within the replication topology.

An Enterprise Edition FSI-NFS system will support scalability up to:

Existing TS7650G gateway systems may upgrade to ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3. Existing TS7650 appliance systems may update to ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3. Upgraded systems must continue to be used as the same system type, FSI, VTL or OpenStorage, as previously configured.

IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3 and IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3 replace ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.2 and ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.2.

Auto renewal registration of software maintenance

Software maintenance renewals in the AAS ordering system for ProtecTIER Enterprise 5639-PTA and ProtecTIER Appliance Edition 5639-PTB software is available through an IBM team who can manage the renewals under a services contract, and provide customers with a common anniversary date for software maintenance renewals and help keep customers current on software maintenance. Selecting feature code 9000 with the software maintenance registration ordered with 5639-PTA or 5639-PTB indicates interest in the auto renewal of software maintenance, and engages the services team to contact the customer and separately contract the service if the customer so desires. Feature number 9000 is available on the following IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise and Appliance Edition base software maintenance registration product IDs:

Specified operating environment

Hardware requirements

ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3 requires the IBM System Storage TS7650 ProtecTIER Deduplication Appliance, IBM 3958 Model AP1. Refer to Hardware Announcement 110-234, dated October 26, 2010 .

For new system orders, ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3 requires the IBM System Storage TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway, IBM 3958 Model DD5. Refer to Hardware Announcement 112-102, dated June 04, 2012 , for more information on the TS765G Model DD5. ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3 is also supported on existing TS7650G systems with Models DD1, DD3, or DD4.

ProtecTIER Manager

ProtecTIER Manager is required for service and maintenance of ProtecTIER systems, and must be installed on a customer provided workstation.

The customer provided workstation must be capable of operating one of the following operating systems:

The workstation must also have:

The workstation must have access to the ProtecTIER service nodes at IP address (port 3501 is open on the firewall). ProtecTIER Manager can support more than one ProtecTIER server. If the ProtecTIER Manager workstation is connected to more that one ProtecTIER server, they can be connected to a workstation via a switch box or via a terminal server. The workstation and switch box must be provided by the customer.

Software requirements

Operating system prerequisites

The appropriate operating system is included with ProtecTIER V3 software and is loaded on the TS7650 Appliance or TS7650G Gateway with the initial order.

The ProtecTIER plug-in for OpenStorage must be installed on a NetBackup media server running NetBackup V6.5 or V7.0, and one of the following operating systems:

Compatibility

In VTL mode, ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition and Appliance Edition V3.3 software emulates, in both stand-alone and clustered configurations, the IBM System Storage TS3500 tape library with IBM Ultrium™ 3 Tape Drives, and the Quantum P3000 tape library with DLT or IBM Ultrium 2 Tape Drives.

Limitations

FSI mode is limited to ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3 preloaded on the TS7650G Gateway Model DD5, and to ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3 preloaded on the TS7650 Appliance Model AP1.

ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition software is only supported for installation on TS7650G ProtecTIER Deduplication Gateway hardware (3958 Models DD1, DD3, DD4, and DD5).

ProtecTIER Appliance Edition software is only supported for installation on TS7650 ProtecTIER Deduplication Appliance hardware (3958 Model AP1).

ProtecTIER supports any combination of TS7650 Appliances, TS7650G Gateways, and TS7610/TS7620 Appliances in the replication topology.

In VTL mode, many-to-many replication topologies are limited to a maximum of four ProtecTIER systems. These systems must run ProtecTIER V3.3, or later.

In VTL mode, a hub and spoke replication topology is limited to a maximum of twelve spokes replicating to a single hub. These systems must run ProtecTIER V2.4, or later.

Systems operating as a source and target unidirectional replication pair must run ProtecTIER V2.3, or later.

ProtecTIER path failover functions are not supported with Quantum P3000 virtual tape library definitions.

The paid invoice acts as Proof of Entitlement (PoE) for all orders of ProtecTIER V3.3 software.

Media feature number 5806 causes the media CDs to be shipped for ProtecTIER Appliance Edition (5639-PTB) and ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition (5639-PTA).

Serial number only feature 3444 suppresses media CDs from being shipped on ProtecTIER orders. This program, when downloaded from a website, contains the applicable IBM license agreement and License Information, if appropriate, and will be presented for acceptance at the time of installation of the program. For future reference, the license and License Information will be stored in a directory such as LICENSE.TXT.

Security, auditability, and control

This product uses the security and auditability features of host hardware, host software, or application software to which it is attached. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.

Effective February 5, 2013, IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3 replaces the IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.2 for all new TS7650 system orders, and IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.3 replaces the IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.2 for all new TS7650G system orders. On or after this date, IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.2 and IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3.2 will no longer be available for shipment.

ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition and ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3.3

ProtecTIER systems are ordered as a VTL, FSI, or as an OpenStorage system. These options are mutually exclusive. To order ProtecTIER Appliance Edition as a FSI system, order one ProtecTIER FSI per storage device use authorization feature for each 3958 Model AP1 feature number 3120 or 3170 configured. To order ProtecTIER Appliance Edition as an OpenStorage system, order one ProtecTIER OpenStorage per storage device use authorization feature for each 3958 Model AP1 feature number 3120 or 3170 configured.

To order ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition as an FSI system, order one ProtecTIER FSI per storage device use authorization feature for each TS7650G Server (3958 Model DDx). To order ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition as an OpenStorage system, order one ProtecTIER OpenStorage per storage device use authorization feature for each TS7650G Server (3958 Model DDx).

Data deduplication

Order basic capacity authorizations corresponding to the total terabytes managed by the ProtecTIER system. This entitles use of the HyperFactor data deduplication functionality of ProtecTIER . This authorization is required for every ProtecTIER system which will deduplicate data received from a backup application. Basic capacity authorizations are not required for no deduplication licenses or for the target-only FSI system in a replication topology, unless that target system is also receiving data from a backup host. OpenStorage systems with deduplication active must always license capacity support, whether they are a replication target system or not.

Network replication

Order replication authorizations corresponding to the total decimal terabytes managed by the ProtecTIER system. This entitles the customer to use the ProtecTIER's network replication. This authorization is required for every ProtecTIER system which sends or receives replicated data from another ProtecTIER system.


Note: The Software Maintenance program numbers have been previously announced.

Order Software Maintenance Registration corresponding to each ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3 or Enterprise Edition V3 FSI, VTL, capacity, replication, OpenStorage interface and cluster authorization feature, for both new and upgrade orders.

Order renewals prior to the expiration of the original Software Maintenance registration period or previous Software Maintenance renewal.

Beginning with release V3.3 of the ProtecTIER Enterprise and Appliance Editions, the pricing metrics for the maintenance products listed below are being changed from the previously announced "per Terabyte" to a new metric of "per Decimal Terabyte". This is not a change in actual pricing of these orderable features under the maintenance products, but to clarify that the current licensed capacity is based on decimal terabyte definitions, and to create consistent capacity definitions in IBM offerings.

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage® Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use.

This software license includes Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance).

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

The IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance (Z125-6011) applies for Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) and does not require customer signatures.

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, consult the IBM Software Support Handbook found at

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Enterprise Edition V3 software (5639-PTA) and IBM System Storage ProtecTIER Appliance Edition V3 software (5639-PTB) are licensed on a per server and per terabyte basis. Optional Clustering support and Replication support functions are licensed on a per terabyte capacity basis.

Software Subscription and Support applies

Yes. All distributed software licenses include Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) for a period of 12 months from the date of acquisition, providing a streamlined way to acquire IBM software and assure technical support coverage for all licenses. Extending coverage for a total of three years from date of acquisition may be elected.

While your Software Subscription and Support is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance via telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your end users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For additional details, consult your IBM Software Support Handbook at

Software Subscription and Support does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under this agreement.
