Description

Top rule

MQ and MQ Appliance firmware V9.1.4 CD releases deliver features and enhancements that extend and build on those that were available in MQ V9.1.3, the previous CD release.

MQ V9.1.4 base

New functions and enhancements include:

  • Additional enhancements to the ability to balance applications across queue managers
    • Uniform clusters are a powerful and effective way for MQ users to ensure that application workload connects and flows through clusters of MQ queue managers and to have that workload balanced across the queue managers without external actions being taken. Included is the ability to rebalance the workload as changes take place in the number of available queue managers.
    • The latest update in MQ V9.1.4 enables .Net and XMS .Net applications to automatically balance connections across clustered queue managers.

MQ V9.1.2 was the first CD release to offer a feature to improve the ability of MQ to balance application connections across multiple, different queue managers. MQ V9.1.2 and MQ V9.1.3 enabled C language and JMS applications to balance across queue managers.

    • Further enhancements that can help support this capability. A single set of configuration files can be defined once and used to deploy multiple queue managers into the uniform cluster, ensuring the configuration is consistent across them. Improvements are made to the way in which uniform clusters are configured.
    • The rate at which MQ can detect and request rebalancing is further improved beginning with MQ V9.1.3.
    • With support for applications in C, JMS, .Net, and XMS .Net, uniform clusters are now more widely usable for actual workloads by offering:
      • Simpler configuration
      • Faster rebalancing
      • Improved rebalancing information
  • New support for Transport Layer Security (TLS) 1.3
    • To ensure that it can offer a secure environment is an essential part of every release, MQ security standards and encryption continue to change and evolve. MQ V9.1.4 adds support for TLS 1.3, where it is available, to ensure there are additional options for creating secure environments. In MQ V9.1.4, TLS 1.3 can be used for connections between queue managers and for C/C++ MQ client applications.

MQ Advanced V9.1.4

  • Multiple additional enhancements for the MQ Managed File Transfer (MFT) capabilities

Among the additional capabilities that are provided by MQ Advanced is the ability to move file data over the MQ network. Clients benefit from the reliability and security of MQ, while it enables data to be held in files to potentially start or end in an MQ-enabled application.

    • In support of the MQ MFT feature, one of the enhancements in MQ V9.1.4 is High Availability for MFT agents. With this enhancement, there can be one or more instances of an MFT agent, and if there is a failure in the active agent during transfer, then another instance of the agent starts up and continues the transfer. This enhances the ability to complete workloads even in the case of hardware, network, or programmatic issues.
    • In the last few releases, the MQ MFT feature saw the creation of a number of new REST API calls. Administrative functions can be invoked. In MQ V9.1.4, a new REST API call for 'Create Monitor' is added that allows a new monitor to be started that can watch for the trigger conditions that are met to start a transfer.
    • In this release, the MQ MFT REST functions add support for the MQWebUser role to make administration easier.
    • One of the features of MQ MFT is a MFT Logger that enables users of MQ MFT to log data about use of MQ MFT to an offline store for additional review or auditing. This can make transfer log readable by other users. In MQ V9.1.4, it is easier for additional sources to read these logs and consume the data for analysis.

  • Identification of installs of MQ Advanced High Availability Replica

Deployments of replicated data queue managers can be licensed such that for high availability, one node is licensed with MQ Advanced. The other two nodes are licensed with MQ Advanced High Availability Replica licenses. However, the MQ installation is the same. As a result, it could be difficult, when using RDQM to ensure that the correct license entitlement is allocated and tracked by the IBM License Management Tool (ILMT).

With MQ V9.1.4, it is now possible, when installing and configuring MQ Advanced for RDQM, to nominate individual installs as either MQ Advanced or MQ Advanced High Availability Replica. This is then reported with ILMT to allow for correct license identification

  • New support for the MQ Bridge for Blockchain

With MQ V9.0.3, MQ Advanced included support for connectivity to Hyperledger Blockchain networks. This is enhanced with additional capabilities and also to keep in alignment with changing standards for blockchain connectivity.

In MQ V9.1.4, the MQ bridge for Blockchain is updated to add support for Hyperledger Fabric for interaction between MQ and the blockchain. This support replaces previous APIs that were used for connectivity.

  • Use Aspera FASP.io streaming for MQ messages

MQ Advanced V9.1.4 entitles the option to deploy a FASP.io gateway to allow MQ messages (system, application, and MFT messages) to optionally pass through a FASP.io gateway to reach a destination by using the Aspera FASP protocol in place of TCP/IP. For some use cases, this allows messages to move between destinations more rapidly than otherwise would be the case.

A FASP.io gateway needs to be set up for use by the sending and receiving queue managers, both of which must be MQ Advanced or MQ Appliance queue managers. The gateway does not need to run on the same server as the queue manager or on the MQ Appliance. Use of the FASP.io gateway is limited to MQ messages unless the gateway is separately entitled.

  • OpenShift support for the IBM MQ Advanced certified container image

MQ Advanced V9.1.4 containers support OpenShift directly without requiring IBM Cloud Private as a prerequisite.

MQ Appliance V9.1.4

  • Enhancements to MQ Appliance audit log

Recent updates to the MQ Appliance include the ability to stream MQ error log data to external monitoring tools. Additional log events for high availability and disaster recovery are available. In MQ V9.1.4, a further enhancement is introduced that integrates the use of MQ administrative control commands with the appliance audit log. With this enhancement, the appliance audit log includes entries for both system changes and MQ control commands in consistent location, which can also be streamed to external tools for monitoring and security compliance.

  • Enhancement to the test tcp-connection command

The test tcp-connection command on the MQ Appliance enables an administrator to verify network connectivity to a remote server by specifying a remote port and the remote server's hostname or IP address. In MQ V9.1.4, the command is enhanced to support a local source IP address, which enables network connectivity for secondary IP addresses, including HA floating IP addresses, to be verified.

IBM MQ on IBM Cloud

  • MQ on Cloud infoData Center locations

MQ on Cloud was released in March 2018, onto two locations in IBM Cloud, US South and London, UK. Since then, the service was expanded to two more IBM Cloud locations and onto Amazon Web Services. All of the cloud regions are:

    • IBM Cloud
      • US: Dallas
      • EU: Frankfurt
      • UK: London
      • Australia (AU): Sydney
    • Amazon Web Services
      • US East 1
      • EU West

  • Increased security

Security for the MQ on Cloud managed service is a priority. End-to-end encryption support is included in the standard service and also the ability to configure mutual TLS authentication. End-to-end encryption through MQ Advanced Message Security (AMS) increases the security of clients' data by enabling the encryption of messages from the sending application to the receiving application. Mutual TLS authentication enables clients to provide their own certificates for applications connecting to the queue mangers.

  • MQ Advanced capability

Along with the AMS capability of end-to-end encryption, Message File Transfer (MFT) support has been added to queue managers in the MQ on Cloud service enabling clients to use the robust MQ network to transfer files to and from the cloud.

  • Service compliance

The MQ on Cloud service is ISO27001, ISO27017, and ISO 27018. It is certified to give clients confidence in:

    • IBM Information Security Management Systems (ISMS) (ISO27001)
    • Cloud-specific information security controls (ISO27017)
    • Protection of Personally Identifiable Information (PII) (ISO27018)

  • MQ version migration

MQ on Cloud removes the worry of going out of compliance by always keeping queue managers on the latest CD version of MQ. The service is updated to MQ 9.1.4 with this release.

  • Disaster recovery

Cold restart disaster recovery was introduced to the service by taking a backup of the queue manager configuration every 24 hours and storing it away in case of a disaster. In the event of a total outage of the existing deployed data centre, the queue manager is brought up in a different data centre.

  • IBM MQ on Cloud Lite plan

A trial offering called IBM MQ on Cloud Lite plan was introduced in February 2019, for the IBM on Cloud service. For no charge, a client can provision up to 2 queue managers that are limited to 1000 messages per calendar month through the MQ on Cloud Lite plan in IBM Cloud.

  • Price change

All of the MQ on Cloud features were decreased in price in September 2019. With all the feature additions to the product, clients can get a better service at a lower price.

  • 1/2 VPC queue manager

Along with the price reduction, an 'Extra-Small' 1/2 VPC queue manager is also available to join the existing small, medium, and large queue manager sizes of 1 VPC, 4VPCs, and 12 VPCs respectively. The new 1/2 VPC queue manager is perspective for light or occasional workloads that do not require the full power of a 1 VPC small queue manager.

Statement of general direction

Top rule

IBM intends to deliver the following new capabilities within future continuous delivery (CD) releases:

  • Message-level encryption and decryption on message channels when exchanging messages between Advanced Message Security (AMS) and non-AMS enabled queue managers, which is available in the MQ for z/OS® offerings.
  • Updated IBM MQ on Cloud queue managers to the latest CD release on IBM Cloud and IBM MQ on Cloud for Amazon Web Services (AWS).
  • Cessation of further releases for MQ on the Oracle Solaris operating system. That means the MQ V9.1 LTSR will be the last supported release on this platform.
  • Enhancements to replicated data queue manager functions in MQ Advanced that will enable the synchronous replication of data for a three-way, high-availability configuration and simultaneous asynchronous replication of data to another three-way, high-availability configuration for disaster recovery
  • Have FASP.io Gateway run on other hardware architectures in addition to x86 in the future. MQ Advanced and MQ Appliance queue managers are entitled to connect to the FASP.io Gateway wherever it is deployed.
  • The next Long Term Support (LTS) release of IBM to be the last to provide SSL v3 and TLS 1.0 support. The plan is to remove support in a future CD release after that.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, see the IBM Support Guide.

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of five years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect.

This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (by telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to versions, releases, and updates (CD releases, Long Term Support Releases or fixes) of the program. You will be notified, through an announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with six months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee. Defect support for a CD release is available for 12 months from the availability of the release or while it remains one of the two most recent CD releases, whichever is longer.

For additional information on the IBM Software Support Lifecycle Policy, see the IBM Software Support Lifecycle Policy website.

MQ V9.1 is a LTSR and provides predictable support through iFixes and fixpacks for a minimum period of five years from the general availability date. A minimum three-year extension of support is available for an additional fee. MQ V9.1.4 is a Continuous Delivery Release.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Software Subscription and Support applies

Yes. Software Subscription and Support, also referred to as Software Maintenance, is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express. Product upgrades and Technical Support are provided by the Software Subscription and Support offering as described in the Agreements. Product upgrades provide the latest versions and releases to entitled software, and Technical Support provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations, worldwide.

IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support with each program license acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Subscription and Support is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance by telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support centre. (This assistance is not available to your users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For additional details, see the IBM Support Guide. Software Subscription and Support does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under the applicable agreements.

Unless specified otherwise in a written agreement with you, IBM does not provide support for third-party products that were not provided by IBM. Ensure that when contacting IBM for covered support, you follow problem determination and other instructions that IBM provides, including in the IBM Support Guide.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
