IBM Elastic Storage™ Server provides an integrated data-centric, server-based storage solution that can potentially grow to hundreds of petabytes, all with a single file-system namespace, and scale in capacity and bandwidth. New Elastic Storage Server flash-based models provide a configurable storage offering in the Elastic Storage Server family. Enhancements include:

  • Up to six times the flash capacity over the current generation of Elastic Storage Server
  • Improved performance and rack density
  • Simplified license management with storage-based pricing

Additionally, IBM® Power Systems™ enhances its I/O and server options with the following offerings:

  • Linux™ support for the 3.84 TB SAS 2.5-inch Solid-State Drive (SSD) is added for IBM Power® S822LC for Big Data server.
  • The High Performance Computing (HPC) Cluster (5146-S24) provides new capacity point options to provide more flexible configurations.

Top rule
Overview
Bottom rule

The new Elastic Storage Server models GS1S, GS2S, and GS4S are the next generation of Elastic Storage Server technology using flash, offering up to six times more storage space and up to 30% greater streaming data performance than the current GS offering. The Elastic Storage Server is a complete storage solution in a single rack that comprises data servers, storage, and IBM Spectrum Scale™ for Elastic Storage Server software. It is able to support workloads such as MapReduce Analytics, high-performance compute and analytics, genomics, video, weather, SAP/HANA, and enterprise backup and restore.

These new models of Elastic Storage Server support up to 12 EDR InfiniBand and 10 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s, and 100 Gb/s Ethernet ports. As the data storage requirements of file, object, and Hadoop workloads scale, Elastic Storage Server installations can grow in a building block approach. Each building block gives you additional storage space, bandwidth, performance, and the single file system image that can automatically grow. Data is automatically migrated to balance performance. By deploying Spectrum Scale Transparent Cloud Tiering, data can be migrated to and from cloud-based storage systems. The solution can scale to meet your needs.

IBM also offers a complete set of support services for clients making the transition to modern storage systems.

Additional Power Systems I/O announcements

In addition, the 3.84 TB SAS SFF SSD is introduced for the Power System S822LC server. This drive is supported in SAS bays of the system unit. With its large capacity and lower cost per gigabyte, it can potentially provide a cost-effective and footprint-effective solution for many read-intensive configurations. Note that this drive is designed for workloads with modest write requirements. The drive is for use in the S822LC server's SFF-4 SAS bays.

The Power Systems HPC Cluster offering provides 4 TB, 8 TB, or 10 TB HDD IBM Elastic Storage Server GL2S Solution options to enable new capacity points for flexible configurations.

Description
Bottom rule

Elastic Storage Server is a high-performance storage solution built using the latest modular storage technology and IBM Power based servers combined with Spectrum Scale for IBM Elastic Storage Server, V4.2.3 software. These flash elements are tuned and tested and are offered in a scalable building block configuration that delivers up to 1.4 PB of raw capacity at a 40 GB/s peak data rate per storage enclosure.

The IBM ESS Flash Storage (2U24) delivers a modular and dense storage solution designed for high-performance workloads. The high-speed interconnect capability of the Elastic Storage Server offering is being enhanced with an optional 100 GB Ethernet adapter to add further configuration capability in high-performance networks.

The following table shows the available ESS models and configurations of this latest enhancement to the Elastic Storage Server family of offerings:

Model name 2U24 drawers 4 TB Flash Modules (Raw capacity) 1 15 TB Flash Modules (Raw capacity) 1 IBM Spectrum Scale for ESS licenses 2
GS1S 1 96 TB 367 TB 24
GS2S 2 192 TB 734 TB 48
GS4S 4 381 TB 1468 TB 94
1
Estimated capacity, actual capacity will vary based on customer configurable options
2

Upgrade paths are available to go from GS1S to GS2S and from GS2S to GS4S within the same flash storage capacity.

Power I/O and server enhacements

Power S822LC for Big Data is enhanced with the 3.84 TB SAS 2.5-inch SSD (#EKSB) formatted in 4224 byte sectors (4k). The drive is mounted on a 2.5-inch carrier/tray to fit into the IBM POWER8® technology-based system unit's bay. The drive is rated at 12 Gb/s though actual performance is dependent upon multiple factors.

Accessibility by people with disabilities

A US Section 508 Voluntary Product Accessibility Template (VPAT) containing details on accessibility compliance can be found on the Product accessibility information website.

Section 508 of the US Rehabilitation Act

IBM Elastic Storage Server is capable as of August 25, 2017, when used in accordance with IBM's associated documentation, of satisfying the applicable requirements of Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, provided that any assistive technology used with the product properly interoperates with it. IBM Electronic Services
Bottom rule

IBM has transformed its delivery of hardware and software support services to help you achieve higher system availability. Electronic Services is a web-enabled solution that offers an exclusive, no-additional-charge enhancement to the service and support available for IBM servers. These services are designed to provide the opportunity for greater system availability with faster problem resolution and preemptive monitoring. Electronic Services comprises two separate, but complementary, elements: Electronic Services news page and Electronic Services Agent.

The Electronic Services news page is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM Internet services and support. The news page enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems.

The Electronic Service Agent™ is no-additional-charge software that resides on your server. It monitors events and transmits system inventory information to IBM on a periodic, client-defined timetable. The Electronic Service Agent automatically reports hardware problems to IBM. Early knowledge about potential problems enables IBM to deliver proactive service that may result in higher system availability and performance. In addition, information collected through the Service Agent is made available to IBM service support representatives when they help answer your questions or diagnose problems. Installation and use of IBM Electronic Service Agent for problem reporting enables IBM to provide better support and service for your IBM server.

To learn how Electronic Services can work for you, go to the IBM Electronic Support website.
