IBM Spectrum Scale™ V5.0 is designed to deliver an industry-leading, unprecedented level of performance for the easiest, most flexible, and data-efficient, industry-leading software-defined storage solution. As data volumes grow and applications become more capable, more companies need the fast, highly available, and highly scalable data access of Spectrum Scale to drive their business. Spectrum Scale V5.0 spans the enterprise storage portfolio, including flash, disk, tape, local, and cloud storage.

Spectrum Scale 5.0 delivers significant enhancements in performance and administrative simplicity with capabilities that are designed to take full advantage of the performance of the newest, fastest generation of storage hardware. For selective workloads running on an NSD server, the number of operations per second is improved approximately three to five times. This version also helps reduce latency by adopting a protocol that supports sending of messages directly to server memory, eliminating the need for back-and-forth communication previously required to access data.

The settings for several critical system parameters are now automated, providing optimal tuning for various kinds of workloads. This will enable easier setup and improved performance with less manual configuration. Manual override of the automated settings is readily available for users who prefer to select their own settings.

To better reflect modern storage and workloads, and further optimize performance for both large and small block sizes, the new default block size is 4 MB, replacing the previous 256 KB default. To better support smaller file sizes, subblock size is variable, depending on the chosen block size. In most laboratory test cases, this configuration showed improved performance simultaneously for both small and large block size workloads compared to the previous version.

Spectrum Scale is designed to provide anytime, anywhere access to data, enabling files and objects to be managed together by means of standardized interfaces, such as POSIX, OpenStack Swift, NFS, SMB/CIFS, and extended S3 API interfaces, delivering a true data without borders capability for customer environments.

Evolving alongside big data analytics, Spectrum Scale V5.0 supports data sharing for both Hadoop and non-Hadoop applications. It allows users to avoid data replication and movement, helping to improve time to insight, reduce costs, simplify workflows, and add enterprise features to business-critical data repositories. Big data analytics on Spectrum Scale can help reduce costs and increase security with data tiering, encryption, and support across multiple geographies.

The challenge

Today's data growth is challenging traditional storage and data management solutions. Sources such as new applications and the Internet of Things are generating massive amounts of unstructured data such as video, audio, and text files, and data must be managed across standard and new cloud platforms. Being able to balance traditional workloads with new workloads and data types puts pressure on IT and storage administrators to deliver application performance and reduce data access bottlenecks that delay schedules and waste expensive resources.

Despite the growth in data, storage budgets remain relatively flat as CIOs seek to increase utilization of current storage and decrease the total lifetime cost of data under their management.

Industry-leading performance and storage efficiency

This version also helps reduce latency by adopting a protocol that supports sending of messages directly to server memory, eliminating the need for back-and-forth communication previously required to access data.

This will enable easier setup and improved performance with less manual configuration. Beginning with IBM Spectrum Scale V5.0, file compression supports two compression libraries, zlib and lz4. Zlib is intended primarily for cold data and favors saving space over read-access speed. Lz4 is intended primarily for active data and favors read-access speed over maximized space saving. For applications with usage patterns that are predominantly read-only compressible files, lz4 compression can offer significant performance gains in addition to space savings. Administrators can create policies that select a compression library based on the access characteristics of the file to be compressed, with file-level granularity.

Efficient user interface

A powerful GUI simplifies many storage administrator tasks and delivers monitoring capabilities. Built with the same modern user experience principles as other offerings in the Spectrum Storage family, it is intuitive and easy to learn. Common administrator tasks, such as provisioning additional capacity, can be accomplished faster and without knowledge of the command-line interface. System health, capacity, and performance displays can be used to identify trends and respond quickly to any issues that may arise.

Integration into IBM Spectrum Control™ with a common design provides portfolio visibility that spans multiple IBM Spectrum Scale installations and may include other storage. Common interfaces and dashboards for health monitoring can deliver significant cost savings through reduced management time and improved staff productivity.

A command-line interface installation toolkit can quickly install IBM Spectrum Scale software, both base server management and protocol nodes.

Seamless integration with Hadoop workloads

IBM Spectrum Scale V5.0 offers seamless integration with Hadoop workloads without requiring changes to applications.

The Spectrum Scale Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) Transparency connector provides deep integration with HDFS. This enables applications that depend on HDFS to run seamlessly on top of Spectrum Scale without any changes. This connector also allows Spectrum Scale to support new Hadoop and HDFS features more quickly.

For organizations seeking to deploy the most efficient platform for big data analytics, machine learning, deep learning, and cognitive applications, IBM has partnered with Hortonworks to certify IBM Spectrum Scale with Hortonworks Data Platform (HDP) on x86 and IBM Power® servers. HDP is the leading Hadoop and Apache Spark distribution that supports enterprises on their analytics journey. IBM and Hortonworks have collaborated on an optimized and integrated solution that has been validated against a comprehensive suite of integration test cases across the full stack of HDP components.

Spectrum Scale also integrates with Apache Ambari, an open source Apache tool used by many Hadoop distributions for deploying and managing Hadoop distributions. Spectrum Scale is integrated with Ambari for BigInsights® IBM Open Platform for Apache Hadoop. This integration adds the ability to deploy, manage, monitor, upgrade, and debug Spectrum Scale through the Ambari dashboard for BigInsights.

Enhanced usability

Unified file and object storage enables different applications or services to access the same data without moving or altering it. Data can be written as either file or object and retrieved as either. Rather than use a copy and change gateway, IBM Spectrum Scale supports both protocols natively for higher performance and simplified administration. The common storage layer enables most of the IBM Spectrum Scale features, including authentication, encryption, and tiering for both object and file storage.

Quality of Service support enables administrators to prioritize user data services over background or maintenance I/O requirements. Administrators can set throttle levels for services such as long-running restripe or other services that may impact users of the IBM Spectrum Scale cluster.

Hardware requirements

IBM Spectrum Scale Standard Edition V5.0 and IBM Spectrum Scale Data Management Edition V5.0 are supported on the following servers:

  • IBM Power Systems
  • x86-64 rack-based servers

Minimum hardware requirements:

For all platforms, if using the IBM Spectrum Scale GUI, RHEL 7 or SLES 12 is required.

IBM Spectrum Scale Standard Edition V5, when running Windows, requires the installation of Cygwin.

In order to support Hadoop workloads with Spectrum Scale, the HDFS Transparency connector is required and can be obtained from developerWorks®.

Limitations

IBM Spectrum Scale compression

Compression support excludes the following:

  • Compressing files in snapshots
  • Compressing clones and cloning compressed files
  • Small file compression (files consuming less than two sub-blocks, compressing small files into inode)
  • Nonregular files, such as directories

IBM Spectrum Scale QoS

  • Only two classes supported: Maintenance and other
  • All user applications are being placed in the same class and there is no support for different applications being throttled differently
  • No throttling for applications which perform Direct I/O
  • Not supported on AFM cache and AFM-based asynchronous disaster recovery (DR) filesets
  • Not supported in an FPO environment

IBM Spectrum Scale object support

An object cluster can support either asynchronous DR (Active-Passive using AFM) or multiregion Active-Active.

  • Clusters using multiregion Active-Active clusters do not support containers with file access policy enabled
  • Clusters using asynchronous DR (Active-Passive using AFM) do not support containers with compression policy enabled
  • Special files, like device or socket files and immutable files, cannot be accessed from the object interface
  • Not supported running on Z

IBM Spectrum Scale big data and analytics support

  • Not supported running on Z

IBM Spectrum Scale GUI

  • Support for the GUI is limited to a cluster with up to 128 nodes
  • The GUI node must run the RHEL 7 or SLES 12 operating system
  • The GUI does not manage AFM caching and AFM based asynchronous DR-specific functions
  • File systems and NSDs cannot be created with the GUI

IBM Spectrum Scale Data Management Edition

Current limitations of the IBM Spectrum Scale Data Management Edition encryption function include:

  • The encryption of directories, or other metadata, is not supported
  • Encrypted backup requires the user to provide a separate tape solution
  • IBM Spectrum Scale Native Encryption is not supported on Windows and the encryption function should be disabled when Windows nodes are in the cluster

IBM Spectrum Scale protocols

  • Protocol nodes cannot be a mix of IBM POWER® and Intel nodes
  • IBM Spectrum Scale Clustered NFS (CNFS) and integrated protocol support using the cluster export services are not available on the same cluster
  • No SMB1 support
  • No IPV6 protocol support exporting the NFS/SMB/Swift protocols
  • If NFS stack, on IBM Spectrum Scale AFM home, is migrated to the integrated protocol export, any remote cluster caching data needs to clear cache and have it repopulated
  • Protocols are not supported running on Z

Terabyte

Terabyte is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. A terabyte is 2 to the 40th power bytes. Licensee must obtain an entitlement for each terabyte available to the Program.

Socket

Socket is a unit of measure by which the Program can be licensed. A Socket is electronic circuitry that accepts a processor chip. A server is a physical computer that is comprised of processing units, memory, and input/output capabilities that executes requested procedures, commands, or applications for one or more users or client devices. Where racks, blade enclosures, or other similar equipment is being employed, each separable physical device (for example, a blade or a rack-mounted device) that has the required components is considered itself a separate server. A virtual server is either a virtual computer created by partitioning the resources available to a physical server or the unpartitioned physical server. Licensee must obtain entitlements for each Socket on the virtual servers made available to the Program.

The information provided in this announcement letter is for reference and convenience purposes only. The terms and conditions that govern any transaction with IBM are contained in the applicable contract documents such as the IBM International Program License Agreement, IBM International Passport Advantage Agreement, and the IBM Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance.

This product is only available through Passport Advantage.

Licensing

IBM International Program License Agreement including the License Information document and Proof of Entitlement (PoE) govern your use of the program. PoEs are required for all authorized use. Part number products only, offered outside of Passport Advantage, where applicable, are license only and do not include Software Maintenance.

Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance

These programs are licensed under the IBM Program License Agreement (IPLA) and the associated Agreement for Acquisition of Software Maintenance, which provide for support with ongoing access to releases and versions of the program. IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) with the initial license acquisition of each program acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available. These programs have a one-time license charge for use of the program and an annual renewable charge for the enhanced support that includes telephone assistance (voice support for defects during normal business hours), as well as access to updates, releases, and versions of the program as long as support is in effect.

Limited warranty

IBM warrants that when the program is used in the specified operating environment, it will conform to its specifications. The warranty applies only to the unmodified portion of the program. IBM does not warrant uninterrupted or error-free operation of the program or that IBM will correct all program defects. You are responsible for the results obtained from the use of the program.

IBM provides you with access to IBM databases containing information on known program defects, defect corrections, restrictions, and bypasses at no additional charge. For further information, see the IBM Software Support Handbook.

IBM will maintain this information for at least one year after the original licensee acquires the program (warranty period).

Program technical support

Technical support of a program product version or release will be available for a minimum of three years from the general availability date, as long as your Software Subscription and Support (also referred to as Software Maintenance) is in effect.

This technical support allows you to obtain assistance (by telephone or electronic means) from IBM for product-specific, task-oriented questions regarding the installation and operation of the program product. Software Subscription and Support (Software Maintenance) also provides you with access to updates (modifications or fixes), releases, and versions of the program. You will be notified, through an announcement letter, of discontinuance of support with 12 months' notice. If you require additional technical support from IBM, including an extension of support beyond the discontinuance date, contact your IBM representative or IBM Business Partner. This extension may be available for a fee.

Money-back guarantee

If for any reason you are dissatisfied with the program and you are the original licensee, you may obtain a refund of the amount you paid for it, if within 30 days of your invoice date you return the program and its PoE to the party from whom you obtained it. If you downloaded the program, you may contact the party from whom you acquired it for instructions on how to obtain the refund.

For clarification, note that (1) for programs acquired under the IBM International Passport Advantage offering, this term applies only to your first acquisition of the program and (2) for programs acquired under any of IBM's On/Off Capacity on Demand (On/Off CoD) software offerings, this term does not apply since these offerings apply to programs already acquired and in use by you.

Yes. Software Subscription and Support, also referred to as Software Maintenance, is included with licenses purchased through Passport Advantage and Passport Advantage Express. Product upgrades and Technical Support are provided by the Software Subscription and Support offering as described in the Agreements. Product upgrades provide the latest versions and releases to entitled software, and Technical Support provides voice and electronic access to IBM support organizations, worldwide.

IBM includes one year of Software Subscription and Support with each program license acquired. The initial period of Software Subscription and Support can be extended by the purchase of a renewal option, if available.

While your Software Subscription and Support is in effect, IBM provides you assistance for your routine, short duration installation and usage (how-to) questions, and code-related questions. IBM provides assistance by telephone and, if available, electronic access, only to your information systems (IS) technical support personnel during the normal business hours (published prime shift hours) of your IBM support center. (This assistance is not available to your users.) IBM provides Severity 1 assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For additional details, see the IBM Software Support Handbook. Software Subscription and Support does not include assistance for the design and development of applications, your use of programs in other than their specified operating environment, or failures caused by products for which IBM is not responsible under the applicable agreements.

Unless specified otherwise in a written agreement with you, IBM does not provide support for third-party products that were not provided by IBM. Ensure that when contacting IBM for covered support, you follow problem determination and other instructions that IBM provides, including in the IBM Software Support Handbook.

Electronic Service Agent™ and the IBM Electronic Support web portal are dedicated to providing fast, exceptional support to organizations that have IBM Systems. The IBM Electronic Service Agent tool is a no-additional-charge tool that proactively monitors and reports hardware events, such as system errors, performance issues, and inventory. The Electronic Service Agent tool can help you stay focused on your company's strategic business initiatives, save time, and spend less effort managing day-to-day IT maintenance issues. Servers enabled with this tool can be monitored remotely around the clock by IBM Support, all at no additional cost to you.

Now integrated into the base operating system of AIX V5.3, AIX V6.1, and AIX V7.1, Electronic Service Agent is designed to automatically and electronically report system failures and utilization issues to IBM, which can result in faster problem resolution and increased availability. System configuration and inventory information collected by the Electronic Service Agent tool also can be viewed on the secure Electronic Support web portal, and used to improve problem determination and resolution by you and the IBM support team. To access the tool main menu, simply type smitty esa_main, and select Configure Electronic Service Agent. In addition, ESA now includes a powerful web user interface, giving the administrator easy access to status, tool settings, problem information, and filters. The IBM Electronic Support portal is a single internet entry point that replaces the multiple entry points traditionally used to access IBM internet services and support. This portal enables you to gain easier access to IBM resources for assistance in resolving technical problems. The My Systems and Premium Search functions make it even easier for organizations that are Electronic Service Agent tool-enabled to track system inventory and find pertinent fixes.

Benefits

Increased uptime: The Electronic Service Agent™ tool is designed to enhance the Warranty or Maintenance Agreement by providing faster hardware error reporting and uploading system information to IBM Support. This can translate to less wasted time monitoring the symptoms, diagnosing the error, and manually calling IBM Support to open a problem record. Its 24 x 7 monitoring and reporting mean human intervention is not required to report errors.

Security: The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to be secure in monitoring, reporting, and storing the data at IBM. The Electronic Service Agent tool is designed to securely transmit either through the internet (HTTPS or VPN) or modem to provide organizations a single point of exit from their site. Communication is one way. Activating Electronic Service Agent does not enable IBM to call into an organization's system.

More accurate reporting: Because system information and error logs are automatically uploaded to the IBM Support Center in conjunction with the service request, you are not required to find and send system information, decreasing the risk of misreported or misdiagnosed errors. Once inside IBM, problem error data is run through a data knowledge management system and knowledge articles are appended to the problem record.

Customized support: Using the IBMid entered during activation, you can view system and support information in the My Systems and Premium Search sections of the IBM Electronic Support page.

My Systems provides valuable reports of installed hardware and software using information collected from the systems by Electronic Service Agent. Reports are available for any system associated with your IBMid. Premium Search combines the function of search and the value of Electronic Service Agent information, providing advanced search of the technical support knowledge base. Using Premium Search and the Electronic Service Agent information that has been collected from your system, you are able to see search results that apply specifically to your systems.
