IBM® WebSphere® Commerce V9.0 modernizes the industry-leading business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-commerce (B2C) commerce platform and includes the following capabilities:

  • Microservices architecture, with lightweight, self-contained, distributed servers, supports horizontal scaling, parallel development, and utilization of modern, open source tools.
  • Docker containers deliver key benefits for DevOps, including deployment automation, delivery acceleration, and application portability.
  • Flexible deployment options for Docker containers gives IT organizations more infrastructure choices for e-commerce workloads, including all cloud options: private, public, or hybrid deployment.
  • Docker containers enable DevOps to implement a continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipeline to accelerate release updates and customer enhancements to e-commerce sites.
  • Evolution of the technology stacks makes customization of the brand and business user experience more efficient and cost effective. Key changes include adoption of lightweight IBM WebSphere Liberty, replacement of Enterprise JavaBeans™ (EJBs) with Java™ Persistence API (JPA), introduction of the externalized customization (xC) programming model, a RESTful API model, and implementation of the jQuery framework for Aurora starter store.
  • Deeper integration with IBM Watson® Content Hub, an artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled content management system, helps transform volumes of digital brand assets into a comprehensive library making it easier to find and use assets to create strategic and impactful content.

Overview

Top rule

With rapidly changing markets, evolving customer expectations, and new competitive challenges, organizations want the agility and flexibility to quickly adjust their go-to-market strategies and transform how they engage customers across channels. WebSphere Commerce V9.0 helps improve time to value with simplified deployment, management, and maintenance. It enables organizations to customize the brand experience as much or as little as they need while ensuring IBM-provided commerce system enhancements are seamless and easy to consume.

New capabilities in WebSphere Commerce

Docker container technology

Support for Docker container technology is a big part of the modernization delivered in WebSphere Commerce V9.0. The WebSphere Commerce server is deployed as containers into a set of distributed servers in a Docker container runtime environment. In Version 9.0, Docker containers make the setup, deployment, and management of commerce environments quick and easy. Now developers and deployment engineers can create and configure development, test, and production environments more quickly and with minimal manual effort. Further, organizations can now easily implement demand-based scaling, quickly clone and duplicate environments, and perform system upgrades seamlessly, giving the business the agility required to seize market opportunities, launch new sites, and deliver customer experience innovations faster than ever before.

New customization programming model and updated technology

WebSphere Commerce V9.0 employs an updated technology stack and modular architecture for developers to help make customization of the brand and business user experience more efficient and cost effective. The separation of store, search, and transaction servers allows developers to work in parallel with fewer dependencies to deliver production changes more efficiently than ever before. The externalized customizations (xC) programming model makes it possible to separate integration logic from business logic, allowing organizations to easily apply IBM-provided commerce system enhancements and updates while still maintaining all of the customizations that make each site unique. This release also includes several core technology improvements, including the migration of Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) to the Java Persistence API (JPA), and support for running the transaction server on IBM WebSphere Application Server V9.0.

Introducing WebSphere Liberty

WebSphere Liberty is a fast, dynamic, and easy-to-use Java application server, built on the open source Open Liberty project. In WebSphere Commerce V9.0, the store, search, and customization servers run on WebSphere Liberty. WebSphere Liberty is packaged with WebSphere Commerce.

With WebSphere Liberty, developers can easily and quickly create applications, using agile and DevOps principles. The code is available in GitHub under Eclipse Public License 1.0, and the ongoing development for WebSphere Liberty is based on the Open Liberty project. Open Liberty is focused on creating a runtime to support Java microservices that can be frequently updated and easily moved between different cloud environments. For more information about WebSphere Liberty and the Open Liberty project, see About WebSphere Liberty website.

Artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled content management system

In Version 9.0, integration with Watson™ Content Hub enables online merchandisers to use Watson Content Hub to access and manage digital brand assets directly through the Management Center tool in WebSphere Commerce. Watson Content Hub is a cloud-based, AI-enabled, headless content management service (CMS) that leverages the cognitive power of Watson to transform volumes of digital brand assets into a comprehensive library of content, assets, and intelligence that can be easily searched and applied to create compelling digital experiences. Watson can analyze and automatically tag digital content as it is uploaded. The tagging process analyzes each asset and records a wealth of information about each item stored. Online merchandisers benefit by potentially achieving faster search and retrieval to find the best content to create strategic and impactful content. WebSphere Commerce continues to offer the flexibility to integrate with any third-party CMS or digital asset management (DAM) solution. Watson Content Hub is not included with WebSphere Commerce V9. It is a separately licensed service.

Description

Top rule

WebSphere Commerce is available as two editions: IBM WebSphere Commerce Professional and IBM WebSphere Commerce Enterprise. It is also available as a private cloud offering called IBM WebSphere Commerce Managed Hosted.

WebSphere Commerce Professional provides a comprehensive business-to-consumer (B2C) e-commerce platform that midsized companies can use to deliver a personalized and consistent shopping experience.

WebSphere Commerce Enterprise is an omnichannel, e-commerce platform that enables business-to-consumer (B2C) and business-to-business (B2B) sales to customers across all channels, which include web, mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), social, store, and call center.

WebSphere Commerce Managed Hosted is a single tenant, cloud offering of WebSphere Commerce Enterprise that features a private cloud configuration on IBM Cloud.

IBM WebSphere Commerce Developer enables developers to get a quick start on developing WebSphere Commerce store fronts with WebSphere Commerce Developer Enterprise or WebSphere Commerce Developer Professional. Developers can:

  • Create, test, and deploy a WebSphere Commerce site under the test environment and workspaces provided by Rational® Application Developer (RAD) for WebSphere.
  • Build and extend WebSphere Commerce functionality.
  • Customize IBM Management Center for WebSphere Commerce.

IBM Customer Service for WebSphere Commerce enables a customer service representative (CSR) to resolve common issues and capture orders. These capabilities are built into the WebSphere Commerce storefront and enable a CSR to perform key tasks on behalf of a guest, registered customers, and for both B2B and B2C business models. Customer Service for WebSphere Commerce is offered for both WebSphere Commerce editions.

For information about WebSphere Commerce offerings, see IBM Watson Commerce website and select Omni-Channel Commerce.

Statement of good security practices

Top rule

IT system security involves protecting systems and information through intrusion prevention, detection, and response to improper access from within and outside your enterprise. Improper access can result in information being altered, destroyed, or misappropriated or can result in misuse of your systems to attack others. Without a comprehensive approach to security, no IT system or product should be considered completely secure and no single product or security measure can be completely effective in preventing improper access. IBM systems and products are designed to be part of a regulatory compliant, comprehensive security approach, which will necessarily involve additional operational procedures, and may require other systems, products, or services to be most effective.

Important: IBM does not warrant that any systems, products, or services are immune from, or will make your enterprise immune from, the malicious or illegal conduct of any party.
